About the Author
Alice Medrich is the winner of five James Beard Foundation Awards, most recently Best Baking & Dessert Book of the Year for her tenth cookbook, Flavor Flours (Artisan Books, November 2014). She received her formal training at the prestigious École Lenôtre in France and is widely credited with popularizing chocolate truffles in America. Medrich writes Food52’s Rogue Baking Tips column and teaches online baking courses at Craftsy.com. She lives in Berkeley, California.

She is the author of Seriously Bitter Sweet (a complete revision of her 2003 IACP-prize-winning BitterSweet), Sinfully Easy Delicious Desserts, Chewy Gooey Crispy Crunchy Melt-in-Your-Mouth Cookies, Pure Dessert, and Chocolate Holidays.

A Busy Mom's Sweet Dream!

A MUST BUY I'm a busy mom. I have 2 kids under the age of 3 and a husband who works a ton. I love to cook and would call myself a "fair" baker. I received Alice Medrich's book a couple weeks ago and literally have not put it down. It is already covered in cocoa powder with a few buttery fingerprints. I have found it extremely mom friendly and even made some brown butter brownies with my kids~! Most of the recipes you can prepare in a food processor or one bowl. Genius. Pure Genius. I cannot say enough about how nice it feels to make a homemade dessert AND have an afternoon activity all in one. I say, this is a must have cookbook for any library.

Easy and decadent desserts!

I love to bake, it's always been one of my favorite activities, but sometimes we are pressed for time. In addition, I'm always on the look out for simple recipes that I can help my daughters learn how to make. Sinfully Easy Delicious Desserts fit the bill nicely for both of those needs and in it, author Alice Medrich has compiled a cookbook filled with stunning, yet simple desserts. Alice has written several other titles and her latest offers the knowledge and ability to whip up a quick dessert, all of which, in my opinion, are high-end restaurant worthy. A trip to Paris and the simple dessert she enjoyed there encouraged the author to consider how to make uncomplicated, yet "luxurious" desserts. In Sinfully Easy Delicious Desserts she has done a stellar job at that task.

The resulting recipes from her efforts range from simply baked pies and tarts to rich ice cream topped treats. Puddings, cookies, cakes and other sweets are also present. In addition to the decadent recipes there are also pages with excellent tips, like the Eight Ideas for a Bar of Chocolate or 10 Ways to Flavor Whipped Cream. I've tried a few of the recipes so far, including My Favorite Flourless Chocolate Cake, which has literally three ingredients, plus a pinch of salt and the berry topping. It turned out amazing and so rich, and my family eagerly awaits the next time I create it. I also tried the Honey Balsamic Sundaes and the Creamy Dreamy Rice Pudding, and other than some stirring time with both, they both came together with very little effort and tasted absolutely perfect. I'm looking forward to trying many more of the scrumptious (and simple!) recipes in Sinfully Easy Delicious Desserts.

A single author in possession of a large talent...

Jane Austen. Her name is practically synonymous with classic, understated romance, as well as comedies of manners with a subtle, sly sense of humor -- and the omnibus "Jane Austen - Four Novels" brings together four of her most enduring novels (although admittedly the overall list is rather small) -- filled with lovably flawed heroines, beautiful formal prose, and some rather unconventional love stories.

"Pride and Prejudice" become a problem when Elizabeth Bennett takes a dislike to the handsome, aloof Mr. Darcy -- and her prejudice against him builds after he sabotages her sister's love match, and the charming Wickham drops some shocking claims about Darcy's nastiness. But the facts are very different -- and when scandal hits the Bennett family, Darcy may be their only hope.

And "Sense and Sensibility" clash when the two very different Dashwood sisters, smart Elinor and romantic Marianne, both fall in love -- one with a man she can't have, and the other with a guy who may be horribly unsuitable. And "Northanger Abbey" is a fitting location for Austen's spoof on gothic romances, in which the hyperimaginative Catherine Moreland is taken under the wing of the Tilney family, and especially handsome Henry -- and learns a lesson about the difference between fantasy and reality.

"Emma" is a frothy romantic comedy about a rich, somewhat spoiled young lady who tries to arrange the lives of people around her so that everyone is happy. The problem is, life isn't that simple -- and neither is love.

The omnibus collection displays the range and depth of Austen's writing skill beautifully; though each story is very unique they're laced together by common themes. Each story is a love story, tempered with some clever commentary on the society of Austen's day (example: entailment, which plays a part in several plots), and a biting, sharp-edged wit (the mockery of the toadying Mr. Collins and the foul Eltons).

And despite the formal stuffiness of the time, Austen painted her stories vividly --each one has powerful emotions and vivid splashes of prose ("The wind roared round the house, and the rain beat against the windows"), as well as deliciously witty dialogue ("I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine"). But she also weaves in some intensely romantic moments as well.

Austen also had an interesting range of heroines -- quiet ones, melodramatic ones, intelligent ones, mildly spoiled ones who think they know best. But each one has a major character flaw that must be overcome before she can find true love and happiness And she has an equally fascinating range of love interests: the quiet shy Colonel Brandon, the sexy and clever Henry Tilney, the blunt Mr. Knightley, and especially the smart, sexy Mr. Darcy (who has a flaw of his own to overcome alongside Lizzie).

"Jane Austen's - Four Novels" draws together her best round of novels, and let readers explore the mannered society and obstacle-filled love lives of her heroines.

Beautifull!

English is not my native language so in an attempt to improve it I started reading works of Jane Austen. Although I encountered the book quite accidently I'm really glad I did because it's just so enjoyable a reading! Her language is simply brilliant and I adore her sense of humor. The persons in her works are absolutely natural, they are developing during the book, they change their mind just like real people do. None is perfect, none is bad.
If you haven't read any works of Jane Austen, I highly recommend you to start with this book which comprises her most famous novels. They are amazing pieces of classical literature.
I liked this edition very much, despite its low price it's extremely beautifull and well-made.

Very Creative and Inspiring!

When I first received this cookbook, I wasn't too sure how the author was going to come up with 101 recipes that don't require any cooking, especially for the non-vegetarian main dishes. What I found out was that this book is full of so many healthy and inspiring recipes (none of them requiring an oven), and that the most I needed was my electric kettle for a few of the recipes. Love it! For everyone who hates turning on the oven in the summer, this cookbook is for you.

The recipes in this cookbook are SO creative! On my first reading, I had already decided that I wanted to try so many of the recipes. The recipes cover Breakfast and Brunch, Starters and Sides, Main Dishes, and Desserts. Here are just a few that had me rushing into the kitchen: Peanut Butter Pumpkin Bars, Sunflower Tomato Pate Nori Rolls, Shrimp and Noodles with Sweet and Sour Sauce, Smoked Tofu Wraps, Lemon Cheesecake with Cherry Sauce, No-Bake Flourless Fig Brownies, and Applesauce Pie. Two other great things: the lay-flat binding and pictures for most recipes.

In short: I highly recommend this cookbook! Forget for a moment that you won't be needing your oven to make these recipes, this cookbook just has so many great recipes.

excited to try a lot of the recipes I saw

at first, as I start going through the book I was dismayed, all the recipes I was seeing I either couldn't or wouldn't eat. I guess a liquid diet is not something my system can handle. but then I got to the main dishes, and the more I saw the more delighted I wa to find the exact sort of recipes I'd been looking for for 3 years and it just kept getting better. I will enjoy trying the recipes and putting my own spin on thm

If you hate cooking or don't know how, this book is for you.

I don't really have time to cook nor do I enjoy it most of the time. I like meals I can "prepare" and not cook. That's what I like about this book. Better than throwing things together from a few cans, get this book and create some fast and healthy meals and snacks. Lots of easy to understand "recipes" with lots of salads, main dishes, sandwiches and even desserts like fig brownies.

Both cities are linked by the Mississippi River—the same force that shaped their origins. St. Paul developed earlier, mostly because it was more easily accessible via the river. Another similarity between the two cities is the foresight by the Victorians who succeeded the cities’ founders to invest money into their communities—both cities set aside large tracts of land for public use all along the rivers and lakes. Some of the most beautiful parks were plotted in the early days of the cities.

Even today there are big differences between the cities. For example, St. Paulites, gluttons for punishment, host the annual Winter Carnival during the coldest time of the year. Minneapolitans take the easy way out by celebrating the Aquatennial Festival each summer. Despite having their city festivals at opposite ends of the solstice, Minnesotans love the outdoors. Even with the notoriously fierce winters, Minnesotans statistically spend more time outside than most.

Sherman Wick is a professional writer and photographer who lives with his wife and co-author, Holly Day, and their two children, Astrid and Wolfgang. He is a Minnesota native with a degree in history from the University of Minnesota. His previous books include Insider’s Guide to the Twin Cities, while his short writing has appeared in The St. Paul Almanac, Film Festival Today, and Cosmic Debris.

Holly Day is a housewife and mother of two living in Minneapolis, Minnesota who teaches needlepoint classes in the Minneapolis school district and writing classes at The Loft writing collective in downtown Minneapolis. Her book publications include Insider’s Guide to the Twin Cities, Music Composition for Dummies, Guitar-All-in-One for Dummies, and Music Theory for Dummies. She is a recent recipient of the Sam Ragan Poetry Prize from Barton College.

A delightful variety of walking tours

My husband and I, both seniors, recently visited the Twin Cities for three days and used this book to help us discover unusual neighborhoods and buildings. The author has developed a delightful variety of walks that appeal to different people, interests and strength levels. She's also helpfully indicated where to park to begin the walks.

For a total stranger to the Twin Cities, I needed better orientation about the general vicinity of each walk. An overview in the front would have been welcome. The walking maps themselves were oversimplified, making it necessary to read the descriptive copy carefully as we went along.

But these are slight quibbles. Overall the book was a godsend to us!

Great guide!

Took this along on my last trip to Minneapolis and had a great time following some of the tours. The only thing that would make it better? Making it loose-leaf or available as an app so I don't have to take the while book along! As it is, I pulled out the pages I needed each day and put them back in place with my notes in the evening.

Truly a must read!

I received a copy of `Arts & Numbers' from my Mother, whose growing concern that my lack of financial know-how will leave me ill equipped for life has begun to wear on us both. Admittedly, I was hesitant to dive into the text as I viewed the gift as yet another attempt to provoke thoughts of returning to University for a formal financial education. However, I can truthfully say that giving in and reading Elaine Grogan Luttrull's `Arts & Numbers' was one of the best `self investments' that I have made in quite some time. Not one for the dry reads that are often associated with financial texts, I found the style in which `Arts & Numbers' was written to be such a relief. Through her personal narratives and continuous consideration of the arts world, Luttrull makes the creative reader feel welcomed, encouraged and supported within the sphere of topics including: creating a budget, taxes and professionalism. I undoubtedly believe that `Arts & Numbers' will have a strong, positive, and long-lasting effect on both my personal and small business finances. Although no book will ever convert me into a financial wizard, `Arts & Numbers' gave me the confidence I unknowingly needed to take charge of my future. I strongly encourage those from all realms of the arts who feel as though they could use some financial or business support to order a copy of `Arts & Numbers'! Thanks, Elaine!

Must read for any artist!

I am not one to write a review but I always read them before making a purchase. After reading this book, I knew I had to share my thoughts so that others would know to buy this book! Most of us use one side of our brain more than the other, for those that are creative and want to make a living or profit from the arts, numbers and finances do not always come easy. This book is written in a way that is both easy to understand and relatable, so I didn't lose interest which meant I kept reading and kept learning. The author seemed to really understand the artist's mind and doesn't make you feel guilty for not having a budget or being on top of your finances. At the same time she is encouraging and uplifting in a way that makes you feel empowered to set these better practices in motion. You finish this book feeling like you have the confidence to create a budget, manage your money and hold your own in a business setting. This book is a real asset to any artist!
