About the Author
Pascale Kramer was born in Geneva, travels frequently to Los Angeles where she began writing The Child, and currently lives and works in Paris. She has received numerous awards for her eleven novels including the Prix Shiller (Switzerland) and the Prix du Roman de la Société des gens de lettres (France). Her novel, The Living, also translated by Tamsin Black, is currently being made into a film in Switzerland.
Translator Tamsin Black has worked as a literary and commercial translator for over a decade. Her book-length translations include memoirs, travel guides, and fiction, including two novels by Pascale Kramer: The Child and The Living. She lives in Bedfordshire, United Kingdom.

An Odd Little Tale

The Child is a superbly honest story that examines the unpredictability, and sometimes even absurdity, of our emotions. We mostly follow Simone, as she watches (and yes, I do mean "watches" and not "cares for") her husband Claude become ravaged first by cancer, then by the ensuing treatments. 'The Child' in this book refers to Claude's son, Gael, and the very awkward interactions both adults have with him on his rare visits. There are a lot of smaller tidbits thrown into this slim book that deal with societal violence, parent/child relationships, working through past mistakes, and harboring resentment for those you love. However despite all that, this book was just average to me.
A small gripe is that the complete lack of quotation marks and indentation made for a very confusing exchange whenever there was dialogue. Rather, you have one big paragraph of text containing multiple sentences spoken between parties, but no way to differentiate the dialogue from the prose. This was particularly cumbersome in conversations between two women, where there is no apparent way to discern which 'she' is speaking, aside from re-reading the same lines a few times until it clicks. A creative style choice, to be sure, that I commend the author for making - but in this case it only served to create confusion and annoy the reader, removing me entirely from the reading experience.
One positive thing I can say is that I enjoyed the vocabulary (any book that makes me have to reference a dictionary is a positive thing for me). Overall, though, this novel simply wasn't satisfying, trying to tackle too many overarching themes in too small a space. Much too short to give the characters any real depth, I'm left thinking that the only reason the author had for writing this book was to show us what detestable, selfish, fickle creatures we humans can be. Not recommended.
