The death of a parent is a shattering experience, wounding us and flooding us with powerful forces. The boundaries of our world are torn away, and suddenly life seems bigger than we might have imagined, terrifyingly bigger. A parent's death can shatter us, leaving lifetime scars, or it can shatter our limited sense of ourselves, opening up our world into new dimensions. For the latter to happen we must be willing to take a journey through our grief, following what may often seem like a long, dark passage that will, in its own time, open out into vast new worlds.

In the following pages I have shared the struggles, frustrations, woundings, healings and discoveries of my own journey through grief. Many parts of my story will resonate with your own expeience; other parts may seem foreign. At times you may feel inspired or comforted, at others disturbed or shocked. My story is not intended to be a typical one but is offered as an illustration of the potential for healing and transformation inherent in grief.

After each chapter of my story, you will find exercises and suggestions that can help you explore the healing possibilites through your own passage and prepare you for the momentous discoveries that await you as you emerge into a greater life on the other side. . . To all of you, however you make the journey, I wish you healing along the way- a healing into life, and perhaps into a greater life than you ever could have imagined.

Lightpost for the inner journey

This book offers valuable insights into the personal journey each person must go through in grieving the loss of a parent, or even someone as close as a parent. Unlike some of the other reviewers on this page, I found her explanations of shamanism and spirit guides a refreshing and useful way to explore my own inner wisdom and find support and healing. For those unfamiliar with shamanism, or uncomfortable with practices different than their own, I encourage anyone to open their heart and mind to a new way of healing.

I found Ms. Kennedy's book extraordinarily helpful. Although both of my parents are alive, I had a stepmother whom I loved dearly who died when I was 20 and away at college. I had been told that she died of a broken heart. ( She was mentally ill and depressed and had ten shock treatments.) Twenty years later, my father informed me that Leila, whom I had loved like a second mother, had killed herself. I had lived with a lie for twenty years. The grief I felt was almost overwhelming: to think that she had died in such a terrible lonely way. Ms. Kennedy's book helped me find ways to clarify my relationshiop with Leila, with her death, and to work through all those years of unresolved loss, confronting the truth from a different perspective. Although my parents are alive, her book has also prepared me for the fact that although I will never really be ready for their death, being clear and direct in the relationships I have now will help when it is time for them to pass, and that I will have tools with which to cope when it is their time to leave this Earth. I am glad to have this book in my library. I gave it to all four of my cousins when their wonderful father dropped dead of a heart attack at 63.( The circumstances, in which he chose not to go to the hospital, made it almost like a suicide, creating unresolved feelings).They found it remarkably helpful. Death seems so final when we think of the object as being unable to receive our communication or to transform. Ms. Kennedy's book points out in a very meaningful way, that "the object", the loved one, in this case is anything but an object, but a living spirit with which we can continue to interact... " the object" is no more outside ourselves than we are outside ourselves: it is a matter of defining who they are and how they live within us that creates the healing. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

This book allowed me to understand the incredibly deep emotions and affect my father's death had on me. Though his death was expected, and I was 45 years old, had no idea the impact his passing would have. Alexandra Kennedy's book was like a lifeline for me, revealing that my reactions were at the same time personal and shared by others. Her ability to weave the experiences of others and her own helped to show me that losing a parent is indeed a benchmark in our lives. I utilized many of the tools given in the text to help work through my grieving, thus personalizing my experience. There is no doubt that by acting upon the suggestions in this book I grew through the grieving process.
I recommend this book to anyone, regardless of age, who has experienced the death of a parent.

Powershell rules!

Powershell is a much more powerful than MS-DOS command line to access your Oracle Database.

I just received this book yesterday. The format is pretty unusual, 192m x 235mm x 4 mm :-) It is well printed and it looks nice.

The book focuses more on developings API's than write DBA's scripts, if you do not want to use Oracle Data Provider assembly (odp.net), there is little else said on Powershell and Oracle.

The approach of the author is to provide receipts for common tasks like retrieve or output data out of the databases, starting with connection string until advanced graphs (with the Windows.Forms assembly)

I highly recommend Geoffrey Hudik's Instant Oracle Database and PowerShell How-to ebook, part of Packt Publishing's Instant book series. Packt's Instant book series promises short, fast, and focused information; Hudik's book delivers. It's eighty pages deliver hundreds of pages worth of the author's knowledge in a highly-condensed format, perfect for today's multi-tasking technical professionals.

Hudik's book is perfect for anyone experienced with the Oracle Database 11g platform, and interested in leveraging Microsoft's PowerShell scripting technology to automate their day-to-day database tasks. Even a seasoned developer, already experienced in both technologies, will learn how to easily overcome several integration intricacies, clearly covered by the author.

As a busy Lead Developer for a large public company, I was able to immediately start implementing many of the book's lessons to improve my productivity. I especially enjoyed the way the book builds upon previous lessons, resulting in a useful collection of foundational PowerShell scripts and modules. Building on top of these, save time when automating a new task.

...I was expecting more zombies in it. Other than that it contains a good introduction on connecting PowerShell to an Oracle database and several other tutorials and snippets that could prove to be quite useful for any Oracle/.Net junkie.

DCI Harry Brock and his sidekick, DS Dave Poole, have a tricky case on their hands. It looks as if the pair of bodies in an abandoned van could be connected with a vast swindle involving forged corporate share certificates originating in Germany. It appears the dead man and woman were involved in the scheme, but, as Brock and Poole well know, just because a murder victim might have been a criminal doesn’t mean you don’t have to bring the killer to justice. The Brock and Poole novels are mainstream police procedurals, and while this one’s story might have benefited from a little more narrative flexibilty, the author mainly sticks with the procedural format. That’s hardly a criticism, though, for a series that does what it does so well, and, as always, Ison peppers the book with humor and witty banter. Another solid entry in this increasingly popular series. --David Pitt

About the Author
Graham Ison was in the regular army before joining the Metropolitan Police. During his career in Scotland Yard s Special Branch, he was involved in several famous espionage cases and spent four years at 10 Downing Street as protection officer to the prime minister. He later guarded crowned heads and US presidents during their visits to Britain, and served as second-in-command of the Diplomatic Protection Group. He is an honorary agent of the US Army Criminal Investigation Command.

Glad I Didn't Pay

I got this book from my library. It's a police procedural set in London and details the hunt for a triple murderer by Detective Chief Inspector Harry Brock. And, you won't forget the full title of any cops because every police officer introduced throughout the book is addressed by the correct hierarchical appellation every time. It must be a British thing whereas in America where I live they all go by Detective regardless of their pay grade. Fair enough but I found that really stodgy.

The book's plot is well done but unfolds mechanically. Mr. Ison is a former army guy and cop so he knows the police side of the story. Fiction, however, needs to incite emotion in the reader and pull them into the plot. I didn't experience that. It convincingly takes the reader through the crime, evidence and clues that find the murderer. This would be a far better book if it was more true to life with conflict between the various cops and more emotional interplay and disagreement. Instead, everyone is like a boy scout character going about their job and being deferential to their superiors. The plot unfolds like a schematic diagram. The plot could use more twists and color. We don't need brawls and hysterics but better character development and especially with the culprit. The motivation for his killings lacks passion and believability.

During the story Detective Brock interacts with some American and Canadian characters. This dialogue was terrible. Mr. Ison needs to have a real American review his dialogue. Pg 116: When Joe Daly visits Brock's office he says, "The reason I called in Harry ...". NO! An American would say "the reason I stopped in" if he's there in person. Pg 163: The head of an American prison is called a warden not a governor. Pg 119: A Canadian from Alberta doesn't use the phrase "bloody-minded" as a figure of speech. These British-isms are never used in American idiom and rarely in Canadian. Also, why do Brit authors and tv shows always depict Americans as gregarious backslappers? True, we are more expressive but there is a range of personality types and many Americans are reserved and cautious in their demeanor and especially FBI agents. The FBI is loaded with Mormons and buttoned-down types. For example, the FBI agent at the embassy calls his secretary 'honey' and comments on her ass etc in her presence. Sorry. That is not correct. FBI agents get canned for that. Verboten!!

So, to summarize, a Brit might like this book because it presents a detective the way they'd like to see them and the procedural process is no doubt accurate. A reader who likes good police fiction though would better enjoy a more exciting and fleshed-out presentation. Not a bad book at all but certainly lacking in key areas.
