Not , by a Long Shot: A Season at a Hard Luck Horse Track, by T.D. Thornton

The great myth of horse racing is that the game is the regal and royal Sport of Kings. It isn't. Not by a long shot.

Anyone who doubts this need look no further than Suffolk Downs, a once-proud racecourse graced in its glory years by boisterous throngs and champions such as Seabiscuit. Now the blue-collar East Boston track is one of many that have fallen on hard times. These days "Sufferin' Downs" is where grizzled Thoroughbreds come to end their careers, hopeful young jockeys aspire against daunting odds to begin them, and diehard fans cheer, curse and gamble on the entire fascinating spectacle. These bit players are not just cogs of a single, struggling horse track. They are the unseen supporting cast for a $15 billion betting industry.

In fifteen years as a racing reporter and press box personality, T.D. Thornton gained access to remote corners of racetrack life off limits to the general public. He got to know the raucously Runyonesque characters and the quirky personalities of the horses; he learned the tricks of the trade from trainers, owners, and jockeys; he witnessed the tragedies and small triumphs of racing lives lived below the radar. One recent season, he finally decided to write it all down.

Not by a Long Shot is a deeply textured portrait of an industry where even the best in the business lose 75 percent of the time.

From Publishers Weekly
In this intermittently engaging book, Thornton narrates a long season at Boston's Suffolk Downs racetrack, a blue-collar gambling bastion struggling for survival in the casino age. Thornton—who has spent his life around racetracks as a gambler, groom, reporter, announcer and PR man—possesses a deep sympathy for and understanding of the dynamics and contradictions that sustain this threatened world. As our tour director, he introduces the reader to hard-luck horses and eccentric jockeys, gambling scandals and betting strategies, as well as the ice and rain that inevitably make the sport of kings in New England a muddy mess. Thornton's credentials are impeccable, he has unrivaled access, and he delivers keen observations in a style that alternates between workmanlike and poetic. However, the various story lines he traces—a jockey paralyzed in a racing accident, an old gray famous for finishing second, a shady owner, and his father's small stable—are not strong enough to hold the book together or draw the reader all the way in. Any horseracing fan who wants a peek at the inner workings of a track will want to pick this up, but the attention of the general public might wander. (Apr.)

Worth reading even if you're not a race fan." Observer "In Not by a Long Shot, (TD Thornton) offers an insider's version of a single four-month winter season at Suffolk Downs, a day-by-day, blow-by-blow account of the many and varied walks of racetrack life at close to the bottom level... In his most successful sections, Thornton turns the spotlight on an unsung, woebegone array of diehards." Racing Post"

Great behind the scenes view
By M. Levine
As someone originally from Boston, having spent many afternoons at Suffolk Downs, I'm a little bit biased. However, I found this book to be extremely interesting and very well written. While many books like this are written as advertisements, Mr. Thornton has no problem in exposing some of the less desirable sides of the industry. The overall balance between good and bad, happy and sad, is quite fair. There were passages that made me laugh out loud, others that were quite sad. There is an interesting section that exposes the chaos and corruptness that is Massachusetts state government. I would certainly recommend this book, especially to casual horse racing fans, industry insiders maybe not so much.

An Insider's View
By K. C. Pears
I've grown up around horses, without really appreciating horse racing, except as the occasional spectator at big event races (or once or twice, as the owner of a former race horse). I found myself completely captured by the book -- not so much because I like horses, but because it brought together for me all of the reasons I worry about horse racing and yet want racing to survive because it is so much a part of the horse "world." Horses are symbols both of freedom and tragedy, as so clearly demnonstrated with this tale.

T.D. Thornton is a masterful writer who does not follow a formula. In some ways, his strong and elegant writing reminds me of another favorite writer, Tracy Kidder, as he lets the story unfold rather than forcing a snappy ending. While Publishers Weekly criticized "Not by a Long Shot" as perhaps not having a strong enough narrative line -- that was exactly what drew me in, because the story never felt contrived or fomulaic. The tale of Suffolk Downs and its cast of characters, both four footed and two (and a few whose legs no longer work) are fascinating. I both wanted to hurry to the end -- and dreaded getting to the end, because that would mean I would have to exit the stage where anything can happen, including an unexpected win from an unlikely pair or a blood chilling accident from a pair that try too hard. I deliberately refused to allow myself to look at the sporting news to see whether Suffolk Downs itself still survives today -- and I won't give away that outcome here.

I found myself eager to spend a day at my own local race track after reading this book, just to compare notes. This book is in the great tradition of memoirs, giving the reader an insider's view of a special place.

Thank you, T.D. Thornton! I'll be looking for your byline elsewhere.

The fascinating story of a struggling race track at the turn of a new century
By Paul Tognetti
Amid the glimmer and glitz, pomp and pageantry surrounding thoroughbred racing's famed Triple Crown it is very easy to forget that most of the folks who choose to make a living in the racing game toil in relative anonymity and many have a very difficult time just making ends meet. Author T.D. Thornton has been around racetracks for virtually all of his adult working life. "Not By A Long Shot: A Season At A Hard Luck Horse Track" is a story that Thornton felt really needed to be told. For only a tiny percentage of the horses, trainers and jockeys will ever see the big time. Yet without those who ply their trade at "mid-level" tracks like Suffolk Downs in Boston, Charles Town in West Virginia and Rockingham Park in New Hampshire, events like the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders Cup simply could not happen. "Not By A Long Shot" takes a look at the current state of thoroughbred racing in this country. Years in the making, "Not By A Long Shot" chronicles the 2000 spring meet at Boston's Suffolk Downs, a once proud facility now struggling to merely survive. Those who follow the sport will certainly understand what T.D. Thornton is writing about. For the rest of us, this book proves to be a real eye opener.

In the early chapters of "Not By A Long Shot" T.D. Thornton spends some time reviewing the history of thoroughbred racing in these United States. In the 1930's and 1940's thoroughbred racing was at the peak of its popularity. Enormous crowds filled the grandstands on a daily basis at major tracks across the country. Thoroughbreds like "Seabiscuit", "Whirlaway", "Citation" and "War Admiral" were household names. In this era, thoroughbred racing was not just the sport of kings but the sport of the common man as well. With the advent of television racetrack operators balked at the idea of putting their product on TV. They felt that frequent exposure on TV would adversely affect attendance and the handles at their facilities. It was a major tactical mistake. In the meantime, the major professional team sports teams gladly offered their games to the new medium and the popularity of these sports increased exponentially. And as Thornton explains the racing industry would never fully recover. Then in the 1960's and 1970's thoroughbred racing faced more stiff new competition from new state sponsored lotteries that would further diminish the sport. And now the racing industry is reeling from the vigorous competition spawned by the opening of dozens of new casinos all across the nation. Indeed, the future of live horse racing seems to be hanging in the balance.

At various points throughout "Not By A Long Shot" T.D. Thornton introduces us to a number of the colorful charactors who make up the fabric of his beloved Suffolk Downs. Readers will come to appreciate just how difficult it is for most of these folks to eke out a decent living in this business and how dangerous the sport can be as well. Thornton tells the tragic tale of top jockey Rudy Baez who was paralyzed in a serious accident during a race at Suffolk in August of 1999. In an instant his career was over and his life changed forever. Thornton also introduces his readers to many of the "Sufferin' Downs" regulars. A motley crew to say the least! At the same time Thornton gets us all up to speed with some spicy racetrack slang. Although it has been many years since I have been to the races T.D. Thornton has succeeded in whetting my appetite. I hope to visit Suffolk Downs before the current meet ends.

I found "Not By A Long Shot" to be a thoroughly entertaining read from cover to cover. T.D. Thornton is a superb writer who is extremely passionate about his subject. An excellent choice for sports fans and general readers alike. Highly recommended!

The Death of Fidel Perez, by Elizabeth Huergo

On July 26, 2003, the 50th anniversary of the Moncada Army Barracks raid in Santiago de Cuba, something unexpected happens. When Fidel Pérez and his brother accidentally tumble to their deaths from their Havana balcony, the neighbors’ outcry, “Fidel has fallen,” is misinterpreted by those who hear it. The misinformation quickly ripples outward, and it reawakens the city. Three Cubans in particular are affected by the news—an elderly vagrant Saturnina, Professor Pedro Valle, and his student Camilo—all haunted by the past and now forced to confront a new future, perhaps another revolution. Their stories are beautifully intertwined as they converge in the frantic crowd that gathers in La Plaza de la Revolución. By turns humorous and deeply poignant, The Death of Fidel Pérez reflects on the broken promises of the Cuban Revolution and reveals the heart of a people with a long collective memory.

From Publishers Weekly
Havana-born first-time novelist Huergo’s clever political satire uses an intriguing premise to depict what could happen to her native country if Fidel and Raúl Castro suddenly died. On July 26, 2003, the drunken and heartbroken thief Fidel Pérez tumbles from the upstairs balcony of his younger brother Rafael’s flat in Havana. While attempting to rescue Fidel, Rafael also slips, and both brothers plunge to their deaths. The excited bystanders shout “Fidel and his brother have fallen,” giving rise to a quickly spreading rumor. Homeless bag lady Saturnina Diaz seizes on the rallying cry as she envisions her son Tomás, a university student killed during the 1959 revolution, returning to life. Also swept up in the furor are elderly history professor Pedro Valle and his student, 27-year-old taxi driver Camilo Santos. As the new dissident movement picks up steam, readers glimpse the past history of bloody Cuban revolutions in Pedro’s ruminations and dialogues with the ghost of his friend Mario, with whom he was tortured by the government. The revolution to oust the old-guard Castro regime imagined in Huergo’s intricate novel might be foretelling Cuba’s future.

From Booklist
Early one morning, an intoxicated Fidel Pérez steps out on a Havana balcony. The rusted structure unexpectedly gives way, and as his younger brother, Raúl, rushes to save Fidel, the two fall to their deaths. Bystanders begin to cry that Fidel and his brother have fallen. Their shouts ignite a political rumor of great implication that percolates throughout the city, entwining the lives, histories, and regrets of various citizens. Among them are Pedro Valle, an elderly history professor tormented and shamed by the death of a close friend who perished years earlier under the Castro regime. The homeless, enigmatic Saturnina does her best to turn the rumblings about Fidel’s fall into a way to redeem the life of her beloved son, Tomás, a Batista dissident. Camilo, a university student and taxi driver struggling with failure and remorse, suddenly finds purpose as a vocal participant in the gathering liberation movement. Huergo’s debut offers an invigorating glimpse into contemporary Cuba and its haunting past. For more novels about Cuba, see “Read-alikes: Cuban Visions.” --Leah Strauss

Cuban magic realism
By Kevin Moore
Elizabeth Huergo's The Death of Fidel Perez is a fable of Cuba's longing for Castro's fall. That desire is realized imaginatively through a rumor started by Fidel Perez's falling to his death along with his brother. The magic of Huergo's tale is that the desire for the dictator's fall is realized by a fiction which releases a cacophony of desires that shape the emotional contours of Huergo's Cubans frozen between Battista's fall and Castro's rise.
Huergo's novel is a rich and rewarding internal history of the aftermath of the revolutionary history. Her strength as a novelist is her ability to describe the emotional profiles of people languishing for decades in a hope that arrives, that can only arrive, imaginatively, imagination realizing what history would not.
The novel offers the reader finely tuned and attuned descriptions of the emotional states of citizens in the unfallen dictator's Cuba. A brief quotation serves to make the point. "Whatever dreams they [Cubans] once had were drained away, revealing the underlying rock, the certainty that time had rendered their passivity into inadvertent choices, while the actual lives they had once imagined had been left unlived and far behind." The novel is replete with such meditative reflections as the narrative moves forward toward the final catastrophe in the Greek dramatic sense of this with a nation spurred to action by the reality of a fiction, the fiction of a reality.
The Death of Fidel Perez is much more than a promising debut for Huergo; it assures us that we would not be mistaken to anticipate more fine writing from her, other novels of the other Cuba.

Not a Bad Book, Just Not a Book For Me
By P. Woodland
This was a stretch for me; another attempt to broaden my reading with a literary fiction choice. The history of Cuba is pretty complete blank in my knowledge base and perhaps had I known more the book would have resonated with me. I am sure that for those that know the history the book will have great meaning.

I was drawn in at the start as Ms. Huergo sent her tale on its way as her titular character stumbles out onto a balcony with a less than stable railing and falls to his death along with his brother who tried, but failed to save him. As the neighbors gather at the scene the crowd at the back asks what has happened and the answer makes it way to them, "Fidel and his brother have fallen!" Those immediate to the accident know that it is Fidel Perez and his brother but the crowd carries the rumor that Fidel CASTRO and his brother are the ones that have fallen and a cautious sense of optimism starts to build as the people gather. No news can be found as it is a time of rolling blackouts in Havana.

The book focuses on three main characters; a street woman who lost her son in the revolution of 1959 of which this day is the anniversary. A professor who had been taken prisoner and brutally tortured during the same time and one of his students. Each deals with the rumor in their own way yet they meet each other throughout the storyline.

Much of the book deals with otherworldly aspects; the street woman is convinced her dead son will rise and return to her. The professor converses with a friend he betrayed to his torturers. This is where I had my problems; with my literal mind set I cannot grasp the allegorical concepts that I am sure are running through these conversations. This book was just plain over my head. It doesn't mean it was a bad book, it just was not a book for me.

Love and learn about Cuba and its people through the eyes of three mesmerizing characters
By Lou Ann Mcfadden
Ms Huergo has imagined a small corner of Cuba that comes to believe it is unexpectedly freed of Fidel and Raul Castro. The characters are lovingly portrayed, complete with failures, foibles, and fantasies, that are slowly revealed to us throughout he course of one fateful day. The most interesting character is not one of the obvious human characters - Saturnina, Pedro, or Camilo, but is actually Cuba itself. "The Death of Fidel Perez" delivers snippets of Cuban history that draw the reader into the sadness and injustice delivered upon it over the years.

I highly recommend this book for numerous reasons, including beautiful prose for those enthralled with language and how to express a place, idea, or feeling; thought provoking historical context that led to the current day political situation within Cuba; and memorable characters placed in an intriguing situation that feeds the imagination.

Wrong Turn: America's Deadly Embrace of Counterinsurgency, by Colonel Gian Gentile

Colonel Gian Gentile’s 2008 article “Misreading the Surge” in World Politics Review first exposed a growing rift among military intellectuals that has since been playing out in strategy sessions at the Pentagon, in classrooms at military academies, and on the pages of the New York Times. While the past years of U.S. strategy in Afghanistan have been dominated by the doctrine of counterinsurgency (COIN), Gentile and a small group of dissident officers and defense analysts have questioned the necessity and efficacy of COIN—essentially armed nation-building—in achieving the United States’ limited core policy objective in Afghanistan: the destruction of Al Qaeda.

Drawing both on the author’s experiences as a combat battalion commander in the Iraq War and his research into the application of counterinsurgency in a variety of historical contexts, Wrong Turn is a brilliant summation of Gentile’s views of the failures of COIN, as well as a searing reevaluation of the current state of affairs in Afghanistan.

As the issue of America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan inevitably rises to the top of the national agenda, Wrong Turn will be a major new touchstone for what went wrong and a vital new guide to the way forward.

Note: the ideas in this book are the author’s alone, not the Department of Defense’s.

Review
"Here in this timely, incisive, and unflinchingly honest volume, the essential task of dismantling the myths already enshrouding America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan begins. . . . An important book that will give Washington’s war-mongers and militarists fits."
—Andrew J. Bacevich, author of Breach of Trust: How Americans Failed Their Soldiers and Their Country

"Colonel Gentile asks us to confront some blisteringly urgent questions. Have COIN tactics ever worked the military magic their proponents claim? Or have they merely provided cover for beating exits from wars that never should have been fought in the first place? . . . Wrong Turn deserves a wide readership by all who must make these supremely important strategy decisions—as well as those who will live with the consequences."
—David M. Kennedy, professor of history, Stanford University, and editor of The Modern American Military

"Counterinsurgency rises over and over again from the ashes of defeat. It is Gian Gentile’s ambition to 'drive a stake through its heart,' and in Wrong Turn he has succeeded—brilliantly."
—Marilyn Young, professor of history, New York University

"A brilliant and persuasive book . . . offers by far the most convincing explanation extant of why America has not succeeded recently with COIN.”
—Sir Colin Gray, professor of international relations and strategic studies at the University of Reading

"A lively, provocative and readable book . . . never misses its mark."
—Hew Strachan

"Based on his personal experience in Baghdad as well as some fine historical scholarship, Colonel Gentile takes aim at America’s current COIN doctrines and shows how ineffective they really are. An exceptionally courageous book, clearly and forcibly written."
—Martin van Creveld, author of The Transformation of War

"Gentile finds the common flaw in our failed strategy as evidenced in our last three military misadventures. . . . We did not lose the Vietnam War—it was never ours to win. Is Afghanistan becoming a repeat performance?"
—Volney Warner, General (Ret), U.S. Army

"How I wish we’d had this telling critique of counterinsurgency warfare before Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. It would have been far harder to make those tragic mistakes. A must-read for our national security experts, and U.S. citizens."
—Leslie H. Gelb, president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations and former columnist for the New York Times

Refreshing, Passionate, Well Reasoned Account
By Writing Historian
As I read this book, I wondered about COL Gentile's motives for writing it. Whether I am right or wrong, it seemed to me that as a professional historian and professional soldier he distinctly does not like cookie-cutter explanations of why events turned out the way they did in Iraq and why they have turned out the way they did in past counter-insurgencies (which some analysts point to as the reason why COIN "worked" in Iraq). The twisting of the truth about past events, which is designed to "sell" counterinsurgency as the wonder recipe for success in past conflicts is clearly repugnant to the author. I also do not think that he cares to be lumped into the "pre-Petraeus" U.S. military in Iraq which, according to some, obviously did not do things in an "enlightened manner." I guess soldiers who fought in North Africa wouldn't like being lumped into the "they were inexperienced and got their butts kicked by the Germans" category either, though I make that comparison only in an illustrative sense.

This slim volume is organized with a preface entitled "A Personal Note - the Hell of Baghdad," an introduction entitled "The Conceit of American Counterinsurgency," five chapters (each about 25 - 30 pages) respectively - 1.) The Construction of the Counterinsurgency Narrative, 2.) Malaya: The Foundation of the Counterinsurgency Narrative, 3.) Vietnam: The First Better War That Wasn't, 4.) Iraq: A Better War, Version 2, 5.) Afghanistan: Another Better War That Wasn't and an afterword entitled "Truth is the Casualty of COIN." Notes on sources begin on page 142, with "Notes" on p. 145 and the index starting on page 181.

Making his point: I believe that COL Gentile very effectively makes the point that a slick "Historical Public Relations Campaign" (so to speak) has resulted in a view of Malaya and Vietnam that is very different from the actual truth. The British government sold its "success" to the Free World, which stood in sharp contrast to Vietnam and Algeria, to the point where some former British officers were advising the Americans in Vietnam. Post-war U.S. Historians, on the other hand, wove a tale of GEN Creighton Abrams' "success" in Vietnam, contrasting his astute use of "Counterinsurgency" to defeat the Viet Cong - an approach which GEN William Westmoreland apparently hadn't even tried to undertake (not true). Gentile's dismantling of the oft-told tale by Counterinsurgency enthusiasts which goes something like "when (Abrams/Templer - pick one) arrived things were done very differently and that is why the Americans 'won' under GEN Abrams and why the British 'won' in Malaya". He has astutely sifted through the relevant collections and archives in the United States and the United Kingdom to build a very strong case against the "COIN-istas" holding Malaya and Vietnam up to a very un-critical light when explaining what happened in those countries. Additionally, I believe the author makes an equally strong case that the publication and institutional embrace of the U.S. Army's FM 3-24 was surrounded by a lot of hype.

Where he is not as effective (in my opinion) when making his point: Iraq. COL Gentile, in keeping with the debunking of the Malaya and Vietnam Counterinsurgency Narrative, is bound to present the Surge as "ineffective" and GEN George W. Casey as more astute/effective than the current "popular" narrative (Thomas Ricks, Linda Robinson, Gordon & Trainor, Cloud & Jaffee, et al) portray. COL Gentile is more persuasive showing that GEN Casey's image has suffered more than it should have than his attempts to portray the surge as "ineffective."

Why am I not totally convinced of the "Surge" really turning out to be more of a "Drift along with Other Events?" Gentile's recounting of Iraq in 2007 through late 2008 seems a bit selective to this reviewer. If the Sunni Awakening was a "done deal" in Al Anbar, why did another full year of tough battle in western Iraq follow the departure of COL Sean McFarland's 1/1 AD? The experiences of COL John Charlton's 1/3 ID, as narrated in Ltc. (Ret.) Michael E. Silverman's "Awakening Victory: How Iraqi Tribes and American Troops Reclaimed al Anbar Province and Defeated al Qaeda in Iraq" paints a vivid picture of a fight still somewhat in question as the Surge began. Gentile's theme also does not explain how a second Sunni awakening simultaneously ignited in South Central Iraq once the rest of 3ID took the fight to the insurgent sanctuaries south of the Iraqi capital while maintaining an adequate number of U.S. troops within Baghdad.

The achievements of the Iraqi Army, which performed as it had never done before during the "Charge of the Knights" and "Battle for Phase Line Gold" is also left unexplained. If anything, the fighting in Basra during March - April 2008 acted as a seminal morale booster for the Iraqi Army, which had never before stood its ground against the Mahdi Army. In essence, Basra had the same effect on the IA as the 1952 Battle of White Horse Mountain had on the ROK Army vis a vis their Chinese opponents. All in all, the Iraqi Army went from being a bystander during Together Forward I and II to finding itself in the thick of things during the Surge, e.g. at least one major change from the past.

Do I still recommend this book even though I am not persuaded by all of COL Gentile's arguments? The answer is a resounding "yes." The author makes a number of cogent and informed points that need to be further examined, especially by historians who will write about Iraq (and Afghanistan) in the future. Whether you agree with COL Gentile or not, this bold and refreshing book clearly belongs on the shelf of any military historian and soldier who is comfortable with the notion of critically examining accepted historical narratives.

Moral Courage
By Bing West
Within the ranks of the US Army, many myths about the efficacy of liberal counterinsurgency - building nations rather than destroying the insurgencies - have grown into conventional wisdom. Colonel Gentile, US Army, has been at the forefront of clear-eyed historians challenging the belief that the US military should be the lead agency in nation-building without any control over the military and political leaders of the host nations. To its credit, West Point has encouraged the analysis of different points of view, such as Gentile's.

(Full disclosure: I know Col. Gentile, have observed him as a commander in battle and believe his critique of nation-building as a core mission and competency of the Army and Marines is correct.0

Gentile writes in a refreshing, candid, no-sugar-added style. He tends toward the outrageous, (compared to the standard anodyne doctrinal texts) His basic thesis is that counterinsurgency is a bottom-up process that begins with explaining to a squad leader what his task is. Instead, Gentile points out that generals concocted liberal but cock-eyed theories, like "you can't win a war by killing people" and "dollars are bullets."
Gentile systematically critiques one high-level bromide after another, leaving the reader to ask: how did we ever convince ourselves for a decade that nation-building by corporals would work under host nation leadership whose behavior abetted the insurgents?

A fast, intellectually-challenging read that pulls no punches. Gentile and West Point have demonstrated moral courage in challenging conventional wisdom.

A must-read for those interested in military strategy or geo-politics
By Brian Baker
Frankly, I'm amazed that a book so analytically critical of current military strategic doctrine was published by a career Army officer still serving on active duty. Colonel Gentile is a courageous man for doing so, and knowing the Army as I do - I was raised as a military brat and spent three years on active duty myself - I'd guess that his chances of further promotion are probably pretty much nil.

I salute him for doing so.

Further, I think his book is completely correct in its historical foundation, analysis, and conclusions.

Gentile assesses the evolution of our current doctrine of "nation-building" from its roots in the Vietnam War to our present Middle East policies. Essentially, according to Gentile, it's a transition from the pre-Vietnam idea of war as an all-out effort to secure decisive victory-at-arms to one of contained and limited application of military force in order to promote and secure a political victory. This new strategy is rooted in the idea that an indigenous population that isn't directly threatened by the enemy's military forces will naturally coalesce around our own military, and the host nation we're supporting, due to some inherent human quality that naturally yearns for freedom and democracy. In essence, we're now fighting defensive wars.

Gentile is correct, in my opinion, in his assessment that this idea is fundamentally and fatally flawed; that there is no such inherent human quality; that history, in fact, clearly illustrates the very opposite; that we as a country are refusing to learn those lessons of history; and that because of those issues our current strategy of "nation-building" is doomed to failure.

He builds and presents his case impeccably, fully explaining his reasoning and its supporting historical context, and is very logical and persuasive.

I spent five years in Iran in the mid-`60s and went to high school there. I spent a year in the war in Vietnam. I can tell you from my own personal experiences and observations that Gentile got it all exactly right.

If you want to know why we're bogged down in a dead-end military effort in the Middle East (and elsewhere) with no discernible end in sight, and no definable way to determine what "victory" means, you have to read this book.

Death in Slow Motion: A Memoir of a Daughter, Her Mother, and the Beast Called Alzheimer's, by Eleanor Cooney

Kindle edition features a brand new updated chapter not seen in the print editions.

When her once-glamorous and witty novelist-mother got Alzheimer's, Eleanor Cooney moved her from her beloved Connecticut home to California in order to care for her. In tense, searing prose, punctuated with the blackest of humor, Cooney documents the slow erosion of her mother's mind, the powerful bond the two shared, and her own descent into drink and despair.
But the coping mechanism that finally serves this eloquent writer best is writing, the ability to bring to vivid life the memories her mother is losing. As her mother gropes in the gathering darkness for a grip on the world she once loved, succeeding only in conjuring sad fantasies of places and times with her late husband, Cooney revisits their true past. Death in Slow Motion becomes the mesmerizing story of Eleanor's actual childhood, straight out of the pages of John Cheever; the daring and vibrant mother she remembers; and a time that no longer exists for either of them.

From Publishers Weekly
"Whoever said love is stronger than death was full of malarkey," comments Cooney, setting the forthright tone early in this honest account of taking care of a parent with Alzheimer's. In 1997, Cooney (The Court of the Lion: A Novel of the T'Ang Dynasty) and her companion, Mitch, both freelance writers, moved Cooney's 75-year-old mother, novelist Mary Durant, from her home in Connecticut to live near them in Northern California when it became clear that her mother's short-term memory was failing. A great admirer and loving daughter of her elegant, witty mother, Cooney suffered from terrible grief because she could not protect her mother from encroaching dementia. Durant's metamorphosis into a dependent, childlike hypochondriac occurred some years after the death of her husband. Cooney vividly describes the everyday physical and emotional stresses on her and Mitch, once her mother moved in with them, and highlights the lack of available resources for Alzheimer's patients who are not independently wealthy. Cooney and Mitch missed writing deadlines, began to drink heavily and nearly ended their relationship. When they could no longer manage her mother at home, Cooney placed her in several unpleasant assisted living residences, until Cooney managed to find her a reasonable place. A short story by Mary Durant is appended to this well-written, harrowing memoir.

From Library Journal
Cooney has explored ancient China in novels like The Court of the Lion, but here she considers a current reality: her own novelist-mother's incapacitation by Alzheimer's.

From Booklist
Cooney's angry and unsparing look at the devastating effects of Alzheimer's disease on a loved one and the havoc it wreaks on the immediate caregivers is made all the more poignant by the fact that the victim is her mother, the novelist Mary Durant. Cooney and Durant's bond was very strong; they truly liked one another and were very close friends. Durant was glamorous and witty, and she didn't suffer fools or anyone else's foolishness, for that matter, gladly. Cooney lets us slowly witness her mother's mental functions disintegrate, and she pulls no punches in depicting the painful process of the parent becoming the child and the child the parent. Of course, Cooney, a novelist herself, is a terrific writer. Though her subject matter is bleak, her book is neither sentimental nor depressing. Indeed, she leavens her grief with black humor. Despite the inevitable outcome, readers will want to see what happens next. Consider it a must-read for those dealing with a loved one's Alzheimer's. June Sawyers

A Cautionary Memoir
By Dimitri Rimsky
I have read Death in Slow Motion, and found it a provocative insight not only into Alzheimer's but more so into its effects on the lives of the people bound by love and duty to their loved one. Ms. Cooney has every reason to dwell on who her mother was, it is after all the central tragedy of the illness. Alzheimer's does not just kill someone, it disintegrates, it degenerates the very essence of the persona you know and love. We do not grieve for the loss of a body, we grieve over the loss of a person and with Alzheimer's we lose the person long before the body they inhabit dies. It is not only Death in Slow Motion, it is also Grief in Slow Motion. I recommend this book to anyone who may be facing a loved one's descent into Alzheimer's or to anyone who thought they were alone with the experience Ms. Cooney so unsparingly reveals. I recommend a visit to the book's website for a more personal insight into the lives involved with this loss.

You Are Not Alone
By Mary Soliday
This book is a must read! You will laugh. You will cry. But if you have ever been a caregiver for a loved one with dementia of the Alzheimer's type, you will finally know--really know--you are not alone. Someone out there(E.Cooney), knows exactly what you are going through--all your feelings of sorrow and stress, all your frustration and guilt.
Personally, I found I really needed to read this book. I thought there were no words to describe the intensity of the experience I went through with my beloved mother, who also had A.D. But E. Cooney's words do just that.
Her honest story will amaze you as you hear your own voice echoing her thoughts and emotions. You'll ride the roller-coaster of high expectations and low disappointments, high hopes and low regrets, in the land of Alzheimer's.
I wish I had had this book when I was caring for my mother. I knew of no one who could truly understand our plight, not just when my mom lived with me, but also when I had to move her elsewhere. Though back then I might have been too exhausted to read more than a few pages each day, even that would've been such comfort and encouragement to my aching heart, because I wouldn't have felt so alone.
Over three years have passed since my mother died, and I am still processing grief over my loss and her sad decline. But in the pages of this book, I found a healing balm. Whether or not it was the author's intention, she has given me a gift for which I am truly grateful. Buy this book, and pray for a cure for this devastating disease!

A reader with the attention span of a small soap dish...
By Mike Downes
I don't read as much as I should. For me to actually finish a book, it has to grab me and keep grabbing me, from start to finish. The last books I've read have been Into Thin Air, The Perfect Storm and Touching The Void. Get the idea? I chose Ms. Cooney's book almost exclusively because of the title.
Though I have read maybe only a couple of hundred books in my LIFE, I'd have to say this is, by far, the best book I have ever read. Ms. Cooney is extraordinarily articulate. If asked to describe an orange, Ms. Cooney would have 400 or so perfect adjectives and paint a more vivid picture of an orange than anyone ever has.
So, yes, the book grabbed me. And it changed me. Her perspectives, and more significantly, her compassion, altered the way I look at life and existence, and the difference between the two. I am a better man for having read this book.
