About the Author
Jonathan Crichton has over fifteen years' experience in teaching and research in English language education and has published widely in related areas. He holds a PhD in Linguistics and an MA in Applied Linguistics.

Pieter Koster has many years experience in English language education and the design and development of learning materials. He is the author of four school textbooks published by Macmillan in Japan and Compass in Korea and Taiwan.

Learning English through context, practical sequencing and practise

I am an educator who does part-time voluntary work with individual young adults learning English. I work with some of my students face-to-face and with others via regular email contact. I am not a trained ESL teacher. I have bought several copies of this book for my students. I have waited for a text like this for some time. It is truly excellent. It sequences learning in a logical way for students. It builds grammar, vocabulary and contextual understandings in ways that my students are responding too very positively. My distance students manage their own learning. There is in-built practice work and skill and knowledge building is carefully planned. The pictures and bubble text are great and contexts and linguistic relationships are very clear. A great learning resource - useful with teachers or without. Can't wait to get Vol 2!

Fantastic book for beginning ESL students

I found this book at the library, then bought it from Amazon because I wanted to own it. I tutor a very basic ESL learner, and while we've made great strides in pronunciation, I didn't feel like we were getting anywhere with comprehension. This book allows us to practice and repeat the concepts and vocabulary, all in the proper context. This book shows you how to use the language in basic situations, and doesn't clutter the lessons with grammar vocabulary (my student doesn't need to know the words "subject", "object", "predicate", or whatever - she just needs to see how the language works). It's a great book for students with a limited understanding of English, and I highly recommend it!

I am teaching a class of adult refugees. It was hard to find material that was basic enough, but aimed more towards adults. This book fit the bill perfectly and the students quite like the book. Job well done.

Grade 3-6-Kevin Henkes' moving story of adjusting to loss (Greenwillow, 1997) is beautifully narrated by Blair Brown. Spoon's grandmother's sudden death has hit him hard. Wanting something to remember her by but not wanting to talk about his feelings, he takes Gram's playing cards decorated with pictures of the sun without asking. When he learns that his grandfather is hunting high and low for those cards, Spoon replaces them and finally admits his deed. Henkes creates an original yet convincing fictional family from Spoon's teacher parents who spend all summer working in their garden, to his lovable younger sister Joanie who insists on carrying around a suitcase filled with "bones" (sticks). Brown has a pleasant voice and interprets the characters well, reading with expression and sensitivity. The word-for-word narration is well-paced and well-recorded. Appropriate for individual or group listening, it will be well-received in both school and public libraries.

This book is really really GREAT book

Sun and Spoon is a really good book for 7 to 19 year olds to enjoy alot. Sun and Spoon is a story, where their grandmother dies, and a boy named Spoon that's looking for something of hers to keep to remember her by. Sun and Spoon is about a sister and brother fighting but also how they make again. It's about stealing a deck of sun cards that belong to his grandmother. But giving them back after awhile. It's about lieing to his grandfather about the deck of cards. It's about collecting stuff after a nice stormy rain fall. Sun and Spoon is about giving people things to remeber somebody by. It's about helping famliy out and spening time with them evey day. So if you like to read books about family then you should get Sun and Spoon. It's a really, really good book to read, especialy at a young age.

One of the most affecting, excellent books for young people!

I am a sap. I admit it. I get weepy when one of those touching television commercials comes on. Disney movies can get me too. Those are visual images, though. Books have never gotten to me in the same way. I sold books for six years and am now a Children's Librarian...so I read and have always read A LOT. Only two books have ever made me cry.
This one made me weep. It is a thing of beauty. The prose is spare and poetic. The characters breathe from their first appearance. The story is so real, so well handled. I don't think anyone could read this short novel and come away unaffected. There is a wonderful network of symbols at work in this book...but you don't have to analize them in order to enjoy meeting Spoon and his family...to feel the depth of his relationship with both his grandparents...and glimpse with him the depth of his grandparent's relationship with each other. Excellent reading for any age reader!

Sun & Spoon presents how a young lad copes with the death of his grandmother. Henkes presents the story in such a touching way as Spoon searches for something tangible to remember his gram by. Not only does the story depict outward expressions of grief that Spoon deals with but also reveals his inner struggle of right and wrong. Spoon matures as the series of events unfold and learns a deep truth that a sorrow shared is, indeed, a sorrow halved. He and his grandfather both feel closer to gram as they play double soltaire with gram's deck of cards!

Very effective workouts

It's amazing that all you need is a medicine ball to do everything necessary to tone up and build muscle. It's amazing but it's true. And in Medicine Ball Workouts by Brett Stewart you'll discover how to strengthen your major and supporting muscle groups. Now this is important because it's doing compound exercises that gives you power and builds muscle. It's not doing isolated lifting.

Of course the medicine ball is especially great for the core. Nothing will give you a solid core as fast as a medicine ball workout. And Brett shows you how to do it all in his new book.

slightly disappointed

Nothing very special many other sources could have provided the same for free if googled. Would have liked to see much more exercises in detail for each body part.

the book is a rehash of the author's methodology, used in his previous books. There are now innovative exercises, no conceptual frameworkfor the use of medicine ball, which would be expected in this kind of manual

About the Author
Rajiv Joseph is an American playwright and a 2010 Pulitzer Prize Finalist for his play, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. His productions include Gruesome Playground Injuries, Animals Out of Paper, The Leopard and the Fox, Huck & Holden, and All This Intimacy. The North Pool premiered in 2011 at Theatre Works in Palo Alto. He received his BA in Creative Writing from Miami University and his MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. He served for three years with the Peace Corps in Senegal.
