Pithy and profound

I'm thrilled to see this book back in print and available for Kindle after many years as a rarity. I just about wore out my paperback first edition, which dates back to the heady days of the mid-70's when reliable translations of Tibetan Buddhist texts were quite rare.

For those familiar with Milarepa through the two-volume translation of the 100,000 songs this book may come as a bit of a shock, though it will be a welcome one for anyone open to being transformed by Milarepa'a audacious message rather than just reading for entertainment. The teachings here are exceedingly pithy and direct, with a raw and pointed quality that leaves the reader no wiggle room whatsoever to avoid the radical reversal of life priorities that Milarepa demands and that he so powerfully embodied in his own choices. Here is the great poet of solitary retreat, the savage satirist of samsaric priorities, the astounding poetic master of Mahamudra in all of his yogic glory. It is an uncompromisong and tremendously inspiring book.

a joyous masterpiece

Lama Kunga's way of telling the tales of Milarepa makes me want to read on and on. Milarepa, himself, was a character I found to be fascinating to study. Being able to find this book after so many years helped to facillitate the joys of the Tibetan Buddhist way of life and culture.

Fortunate ones

This is a wonderful book wherein the enlightening songs of one of the great yogis, Milaraspa, reveal his realizations as they manifest, for the benefit of all beings who seek liberation from bondage and [ASIN:0913546917 Mother of Knowledge (Tibetan Translation Series)sufferings of all kinds. His story at each event of his precious yogic adventure, is sung with beauty and compassion and gratitude. THe verses are compelling so there is no boredom or ordinariness in this translation of a remarkable life in the caves and along the mountain streams of Tibet. His enlightenment is fully realized and along his way he shares his good fortunes with the reader and all others who hear his beneficial teachings.
The details of his life are sometimes astounding so be prepared to reevaluate your sincerity and devotion as you are apt to compare yourself to one of the great yogis of all time.

In her debut novel, Pye, the granddaughter of missionaries, addresses the near-unrelenting tragedy of missionary work in China after the Boxer Rebellion. Mongolian nomads steal the child of a minister and his pregnant wife Grace, sending the Reverend in search of his son. Along the way he loses his health, faith in God, and reputation. Grace stays behind to grapple with her loneliness, a nervous condition, bloody coughing, the threat of a miscarriage, near death in childbirth, and hunger created by famine. Pye has the imagination to put the elements in play, but it proves too much to juggle. Grace doesn't fret much about her kidnapped son—as supposedly worrying exacerbates her nervous condition—though she regularly frets about her husband. Early on, Pye shows us the Reverend reflecting on his faith, demonstrating a profound level of insight into such matters, yet the process of how he feels in losing that faith isn't revealed. All the same, when Grace shows us her unabiding love for the Reverend we see the author's ability to pull beauty from this cacophony of tragedy. Pye's prose is speckled with moments of beauty, but the glaring gaps in the narrative make it an inconsistent read. (May)

Haunting, impressive debut!

Haunting and richly imagined, RIVER OF DUST is an impressive debut by Virginia Pye. The gripping tale of Grace Watson and her husband --the Reverend as she refers to him, or "The Ghost Man," as the Chinese of the Shansi Province call him-- the story opens with the kidnapping of the couple's young son, Wesley, by a pair of Mongolian nomads and unfolds with the ensuing efforts to find him. But perhaps even more important than the tale of what happens to Wesley is what happens to Grace and the Reverend as a result -- to their ideas of what it means to be Christian missionaries, what it means to be a married couple and parents, what it means to be a Westerner in northwest China at the turn of the 20th century. The land is as much a character as any of the humans trying to tame it -- and in the battle of wills with its foreign occupants, does its best to break their spirits and emerge victorious.

Recounted by an omniscient narrator, this sweeping story favors neither the white missionaries nor the Chinese but instead allows the reader to fully experience the humanity of all its characters. Tension builds as the days go by and Wesley remains missing, Grace's pregnancy advances and her health grows more precarious, and the Reverend becomes increasingly preoccupied with finding his son. It's a book I find myself thinking about long after I have put it down.

Dust to Dust

Although I have frequently traveled to China and have read both fiction and nonfiction about the country, I was not familiar with the period described in this novel. It is set in 1910, just before the end of the Imperial era and shortly after the Boxer Rebellion. I found the setting in time and place fascinating, and the characters of the Reverend and his wife, Grace, are both satisfyingly complex--virtuous people who are deeply flawed. The novel, it seems to me, gives an accurate portrayal of the Western approach to China even now, tainted with ignorance and arrogance.

It's a wonderful novel that I would recommend to anyone.

kudos for River of Dust

I was absolutely transported by River of Dust, throughout the entire book. I have never been to China, but felt like I was actually there, on those godforsaken plains, where events take place that change a couple's life forever. The main character of the missionary was so intricately drawn that what might, in a lesser author's hands, have been a difficult personality to bring to life, through Pye's imagination becomes a complex, three-dimensional man, riven with doubts and fears about his past, but strong, powerful and compelled to action. His wife, burdened by circumstances, also transcends stereotyping (the good missionary's wife) by her complicated psyche and physical state that both stymy her and ultimately send her off on a mission perhaps larger in scope than her husband's. Without giving anything away, these characters broke my heart and also widened it as I experienced their travails right alongside them as they struggled along, searching for their child and coming to terms with their pasts. Kudos to the author for giving us so many colorful and also at times heart-rending experiences within one book!

The best resource I've come across

If you are looking for a broad overview of your options for living, working, retiring, or just getting residency abroad, this book is for you.

I took out as many books as I could find on this and similar topics and this is the best one I found. The information is interestingly laid out, the book is easy to navigate, and I really liked the stories of expats included throughout the book.

Don't expect this book to give you every detail about immigration to an individual country, but do expect it to tell you what kind of visas are offered and where to get started.

Excellent Book!

I was really shocked with how comprehensive this book is. Tons of great information, some of the most valuable coming from those who have moved and their true experiences. There are also tons of great references, links to web sites, organizations. I learned a lot and this will be a great reference tool for a long time, I am so glad I purchased it! It gave me hope and insight that while the United States is a wonderful country, there are also many other interesting places to live. Excellent work to the author!

Refreshing reason to research leaving!

This is a great reference book if you are looking to get out. It seems to hit on the most popular concerns for people (currency, language, freedoms, crime, etc) and even tells about socioeconomic concerns (abortion, gun laws, homosexual behaviors, etc). I do wish there was more info on other nations, but the top 60 countries that are covered seem to be good choices. It does NOT tell you how to get out or things to pack or the process of leaving, etc. It DOES, however, help you decide where to go and why. I enjoy the little stories given by people who live in the countries listed.
Overall, a refreshing book that gives one reason to research leaving.

Assisted by his team of Bob Rutter and Monika Paniatowski, Woodend uses his considerable experience and finely honed intuition, plus plenty of hard slogging, to find out who is killing middle-aged women, all of whom have terminal cancer, and leaving their bodies on bonfires. At first, there is frustratingly little progress, but when two competitive journalists get involved, the case starts to open up. Meanwhile, Rutter and Paniatowski pay the price for their illicit love affair when one of the journalists threatens to expose them if they don't give her an exclusive scoop. Although Spencer treats her readers to an engaging cast of characters and plenty of fascinating procedural detail, the solution to the case seems to come out of left field--even given the fact that the story is set in the paranoid 1960s. complicated case & relationships

This 9th novel in the DCI 'Cloggin-it' Charlie Woodend series is complicated in all regards--from the murder of a terminal cancer patient whose body is found in the woodpile for Guy Fawkes Night; to the newly discovered affair between 2 of his proteges, to the volcanic relationship the DCI has with his superiors. Nothing in this case is evident or obvious. Not even the reappearance of sensationalist journalist Elizabeth Driver is black and white.

Many twists and turns in this edition of DCI Woodend's saga, some of which will lead to his making a deal with a devil and the end of a stellar police career!! Everything is dealt with, however, no loose ends remain untied, just another satisfying British mystery and another chapter in the lives of the inspector and his team.
A well-written series of mystery/police procedural which I recommend.

Grade 3-6 Henkes' story presents a lov ing, creative family with Adine Vorlob, a sensitive, intelligent youngster as the main character. The arrival of a sixth child provides the catalyst which helps ten-year-old Adine understand her ec centric and bossy Aunt Irene. As the oldest, Adine has participated in the traditional creation of a special nursery wall to celebrate the first initial of each of her five sisters, all named alphabeti cally from B to E. All of the family is convinced that a sixth female will join the line. The title announces a surpris ing change. Aunt Irene comes to care for the girls while their mother is in the hospital and stays to help out after wards, much to the children's dismay. With her sisters, Adine plots to get Aunt Irene to leave, but in the end learns compassion and understanding. Henkes' characters are well drawn and appealingly unusual. As in Two Under Par (Greenwillow, 1987), he writes with humor about a caring family. Fans of Beverly Cleary and Betsy Byars will enjoy this newest Henkes selection. This story is about the Vorlorb family. The main character is Adine Vorlorb who is ten-years-old. She has 4 younger sisters. Their names are in order, are; Adine,(age 10), Bernice, (age eight), Carla, (age seven), Dot, (age four), and Effie, (age 2). There was also another baby coming, and they were expecting it to be a girl, since they already had 5 girls in a row. Whenever the family was having another baby, they would make a list of names that they liked. Alphabetically, this next child would have to start with the letter 'F'. Later on her mother goes to the hospital and the girls are forced to stay at home with their most hated aunt, Aunt Irene. Soon to find out that Adine's mother had a son, not a daughter. When her mother had brought the baby home, they couldn't decide what to name him, so they left him with the name 'Baby' until they could think of one that they all liked. Adine doesn't like Aunt Irene or her ugly cat Deedee, so one day when it was raining and she was home because she was sick, she scooted Deedee out the back door and closed the door on the cat, when she knew it was pouring cats and dogs outside. Later she overhears that Aunt Irene was so thankful for having such wonderful nieces, and Adine feels guilty, runs outside, and brought back Deedee. At the end, Aunt Irene and Adine have a special bond between each other, and become best of friends. Adine's mother gives the opportunity for Aunt Irene to choose Baby's real name. Aunt Irene chooses the name Zachary, the name that Adine wanted to name her little baby brother.

I liked this book because it explains to me, as a reader that she felt isolized from her aunt's own 'world'. It explained to be what goes through a 10-year-old's mind when she sees a family member that she doesn't exactly approve of. One quote that I absolutely fell in love with is when she is talking with her sisters about Aunt Irene, "She is so BOSSY," said Adine." I like this quote because I feel as if this scene is a mere image in a mirror of me, when I talk about an adult that I don't exactly approve of.

Another quote that liked was when Aunt Irene and Adine was talking, a the author wrote a very good description about what was happening to the teapot, and I felt as if I was standing right there looking at the teapot, "The teapot was piping hot; steam rose from its spout like a chimney smoke." I love it when an author gets a little object and turns it into a big idea when he or she adds a lot good descriptive words.

My most favorite part of the book was when Aunt Irene finally told everyone in the family what she was going to name her nephew. I liked that part because Aunt Irene had thought about her oldest niece, and how Adine felt. The least part of the story was when Adine and her sisters were talking very badly about Aunt Irene and drawing mean pictures of her. I hated that part of the story because I felt that Aunt Irene didn't deserve to be talked about like that behind her back. This book taught me that even though adults say things that I may not agree with, or things that i do not want to do, those things will take be further in life, but I also highly think that children's point of view and opinions should be taken in too, because children are bright and I think that children can easily think out of the box and come up with more better ideas.

I think this book was very good. I like how Kevin Henkes writes all his book. I think He should write a sequel on The Zebra Wall. Maybe he could have a miracle come in The Vorlob family. I think they should end up being able to have more children and have it be another girl, and redue the F wall.

About the Author

Kat Von D is a renowned tattoo artist and the star of the former hit television series LA Ink, which ran for five successful years. She is the author of two New York Times bestsellers, High Voltage Tattoo and The Tattoo Chronicles, and is the creator of an exclusive makeup and fragrance line for Sephora. She is also the founder of Wonderland Gallery, an art gallery and boutique located next to her tattoo shop, High Voltage Tattoo, in Hollywood, where she lives.

Kat Went Big

On first impression, this book is much like Kat Von D herself: just plain cool looking. It's filled with really detailed and impressive photographs, her tattoo work and clients, sketches, art and design. There isn't a single blank page with just words on it. The writing is also surprisingly intruiging and engaging, mixed with insightful stories and anecdotes of life from Kat and her friends/clients. It's like a print copy of her show, actually, only much more in depth and personal.

At its heart, Go Big Or Go Home is a book about how Kat has struggled -but finally found- her freedom from fears, from judgement, and the freedom to be who she knew she wanted to be. It's impossible to not respect that. Who doesn't want to go for what they truly want to do without the stifling fear and judgement that comes with it?
I'll break down the chapters since Amazon doesn't offer a Look Inside option.

Introduction: Discussing her newfound yearning to become a singer and how her fears held her back and what it taught her along the way.

Chapter 1 is "Individuality". Talks about how she found herself unwilling to go for what she wanted or do what made her truly happy. Other stories and photos in this chapter are of Jeffree Star, Greg Siebel, Matt Mauerer, Sara de as Rego, and Bobcat Goldthwait.

Chapter 2 is "Strength". Talks about finding the courage to be yourself despite a world that may have different expectations and breaking through that guilt. Other stories and photos include those of Marya Gullo, Ayesha King, Adrian Gallagos, and Game.

Chapter 3 is "Creativity". Talks about finding and cultivating your creativity. Other stories in this chapter include: Mike Marienthal and Lacy Sotto, Chris Flynn, Tony Tornay, and Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong.

Chapter 4 is "Independence". Kat talks about how at a young age she learned both the value of independence and the importance of surrounding herself with creative people. Other stories and photos interwoven on the subject include Brandon Lillard, Camila Rocha, and Ewan McGregor.

Chapter 5 is "Presence". Kat discusses the fire that burnt down her house and all of her belongings, including her kitten, and importance of letting to of the things we don't have control over. Other stories and photos in this chapter include those of: Meghan Luce, Linda Perry, Felix Rodriguez, and Kristwn Mulderig.

Chapter 6 is "Wisdom". It starts off with the Lao-tzu quote "Those who know don't lecture; those who lecture don't know." Which sums this chapter up perfectly. Other stories and photos include: Prahbakar Kharre and Jamie Thomas.

Chapter 7 is "Altruism". The importance of doing good deeds for the sake of doing good, not for show, and how it feeds your soul. Other stories and photos include those of: Jason Zulke, Kristen Hyde, and Asthon Williams.

Afterword: How she finally worked up the nerve to sing in public and how, in that moment, she was finally free.

It's difficult to not enjoy this book and keep turning the pages. I read it in one night.
If you're in it for Kat? It's a win.
If you're in it for the art and design work? It's a win.
If you're in it for the client/celebrity stories and tattoos? It's a win.
If you're in it for pictures of some really quality tattoo art? It's a win.

If, however, you're in it for gossip on Jesse James? You're crap out of luck. And thank God. This book is much more substantial than tabloid trash.

So much time went into the art, photography, and details of this book. The way she seamlessly intertwines her client's stories in with the lessons she learned make for an insightful, touching, and inspiring read.

I highly recommend getting the hardcover of this book over the Kindle version. Once you see art, you're going to want to feel the pages in your hands.

This book is incredible! It is filled to the brim with photos of her amazing works of art and inspiring stories of taking risks in life, love, and tattooing!

A visual, emotional and creative feast

I heart everything Kat Von D! Her books, including Go Big or Go Home are a visual, emotional and creative feast. I turn to these books when I need creative inspiration, when I need to be reminded I am not alone on the human journey and when I just need a hug. Her honesty and transparency remind all of us that the path to self-actualization and creative fulfillment takes courage and the willingness to be vulnerable and real. Thank you Kat for continuing to inspire!

About the Author
Born on February 7, 1812, Charles Dickens is one of the most popular literary authors of all time. After a very tumultuous childhood, Dickens finally succeeded in getting his first story in a London periodical. As the number of his published works increased, so did his fame. Although he died in 1870, Dickens works are some of the most famous written works in the English language.

Ernest Hilbert received his doctorate in English Language and Literature from Oxford University in 2000. He has served as editor for the Oxford Quarterly, Random House’s magazine Bold Type, and the Contemporary Poetry Review. His writing has appeared in American Scholar, The New Republic, The New Criterion, London Magazine, Yale Review, and many other publications. He is an antiquarian bookseller with the firm Bauman Rare Books, where he has had the pleasure of placing many Charles Dickens first editions of into private and public collections.

Lousy Binding

I've read all but "A Christmas Carol" in this edition. I've found several typos. Moreover, the binding is becoming unglued. I estimate by the time I finish "A Christmas Carol" the binding will be totally exposed. I value permanent books (otherwise I would buy paperbacks). I suggest anyone who enjoys Dickens buy a better edition.

Dickens the master storyteller

Reading Dickens somehow unburdens your soul. Every character that he presents is a work of genius crafted with meticulous detail and intricately woven into a complex plot. This volume contains two of the best books of literature ie 'Great Expectations' and 'A tale of two Cities'.'Hard Times' and 'A Christmas Carol' are also enjoyable reads.For the price tis a delight to have.

If nothing else, it looks good on your bookshelf.

You would do better off buying these books individually from a different publisher.

It sounds impressive, leather bound, gilded edges, but it is very cheaply done. On the plus side, it does have a ribbon book mark so you don't have to buy your own.

But this book was poorly edited, filled with needless typos, and with all four of these books available from numerous other publishers, I would suggest to just buy it from them.
