From Booklist
*Starred Review* Ever since she was involved in a dreadful car crash in Ecuador 10 years earlier, which killed her father, stepmother, and eight-year-old half-sister and left her with physical and emotional scars, Kate has been at loose ends. After a lackluster series of menial jobs and a failed marriage, she now lives with her brother, Magnus, and works in a bar, one of whose customers has become far too “friendly.” Time, Kate tells herself, to pick up the still-scattered pieces of her life and move on. First, a new job, then a new apartment, maybe even a boyfriend. Taking a new job in a travel agency, finding a new apartment, and moving out of her brother’s house, Kate feels sure this is the start of a better, happier life. What she can’t know is that every step she has taken will irretrievably and bizarrely lead her back to a winding mountain road in Ecuador and the tragedy that changed her life a decade earlier. Menacing, creepy, eccentric, tense, brutal, cleverly observant of human foibles, and at times funny enough to make the reader laugh out loud, this is Moody at her best. An outstanding psychological thriller. --Emily Melton

It's Only Slow Food Until You Try to Eat It: Misadventures of a Suburban Hunter-Gatherer, by Bill Heavey

“Mr. Heavey takes us back to the joys—and occasional pitfalls—of the humble edibles around us, and his conclusions ring true.”—Wall Street Journal

Longtime Field & Stream contributor Bill Heavey has become the magazine’s most popular voice by writing for sportsmen with more enthusiasm than skill. In his first full-length book, Heavey chronicles his attempts to “eat wild,” seeing how much of his own food he can hunt, fish, grow, and forage.

But Heavey is not your typical hunter-gatherer. Living inside the D.C. Beltway, and a single dad to a twelve-year-old daughter with an aversion to “nature food,” he’s almost completely ignorant of gardening and foraging. Incensed at the squirrels destroying his tomatoes, he is driven to rodent murder—by arrow. Along the way, Heavey is guided by a number of unlikely teachers, from the eccentric Paula, who runs an under-the-table bait business, to Michelle, an attractive single mom unselfconsciously devoted to eating locally. To the delight of his readers and the embarrassment of his daughter, he suffers blood loss, humiliation, and learns, as he puts it, that “‘edible’ is not to be confused with ‘tasty.’”

Review
"Mr. Heavey reaffirms the value of things small and common that were once treasured but that we now walk by without a passing glance: persimmons, cattails, giant mushrooms, squirrels, morels, dandelions, wild cherries, frogs and crawfish.

"Washington can be a cold and bloodless place, but life is all around if you just scratch the surface, poke around and keep your sense of humor. Mr. Heavey does a good job of that, and like Ol' Man River, his book just keeps rolling along." - Angus Phillips, The Wall Street Journal

“Locavores can be tiresome with their insistence on sourcing (and discussing) everything they put in their precious little mouths. Bill Heavey ran the risk of being a bore in his account of attempting to hunt, fish, grow or forage as much of his food as possible, It's Only Slow Food Until You Try to Eat It, but escaped thanks to good humor, poking fun at hard-core foodies and himself while still finding merit in the movement. . . . Mr. Heavey takes us back to the joys—and occasional pitfalls—of the humble edibles around us, and his conclusions ring true. The finest things I ever ate, wandering the East Coast with rod and gun for 30 years, were the most local . . . Mr. Heavey reaffirms the value of things small and common that were once treasured but that we now walk by without a passing glance: persimmons, cattails, giant mushrooms, squirrels, morels, dandelions, wild cherries, frogs, crawfish and the whitetail deer that occasionally wander through backyards—at their peril, if it's Mr. Heavey's lawn.”—Wall Street Journal

“Heavey’s bumbling attempts at self-sufficiency are a winning mixture of compelling and hilarious.”—Modern Farmer

“There is much to like about Bill Heavey’s latest book. In it, Heavey, editor-at-large and back page columnist for Field & Stream magazine, follows a sometimes difficult, often challenging, and occasionally humorous path to eating wild. . . . The book is an enjoyable read, funny without being cute and thought-provoking without an overbearing teacher-to-student tone. If you’re not already a Heavey fan, this will likely turn you into one.”—Courier-Journal (Louisville)

“A humorous tale about a subject that’s often taken too seriously.”—Grubstreet

“An engaging autobiography/ersatz primer on how to (or not to) undertake subsistence living in an urban environment. While this title is chock full of facts about nature and industrialized foodways, it’s also a story about friendship and falling in love. VERDICT: Laced with tart humor and spiked with moments of sentimentality, this work makes for a compelling read.”—Library Journal

“Brilliant and incisive. . . . It’s Only Slow Food Until You Try to Eat It is gently thrilling and endlessly emblematic of the chaotic way people evolved to become what they are now. The thing about life is that on your way to the hunt, you never know what you’ll gather.”—The VC Reporter

“Heavey tells a tale in which a totally normal dude gets a wild hair up his ass about growing, hunting, and foraging for his own food. The trouble—and the delight—is where he lives; not Idaho or someplace rural, but rather inside Washington D.C.’s Beltway. The result is a hilarious and super instructive book . . . Heavey’s experience writing for magazines obviously taught him how to master the skill of keeping the reader’s attention. His dry hilarity on everything from rototilling to the rarely-seen but abundant monkeyface eel marks, makes this book something special.”—Library Journal

"If Bill Heavey felt like it, he could write a book about something as boring as shuffleboard and it'd turn out to be good. He's just that sharp and funny. But thankfully, in It's Only Slow Food Until You Try to Eat It, he chooses to write about things that are close to my heart, such as hunting, fishing, and wild food. Whether he's hanging out with trendy foragers in San Francisco or butchering caribou with indigenous hunter-gatherers in Alaska, he relates his experiences with respect, curiosity, and well-honed humor. Not only is this book perfect for anyone who loves food or the out-of-doors; it's perfect for anyone who loves a good story, well-told."—Steven Rinella, author of The Scavenger’s Guide to Haute Cuisine, Meat Eater, and American Buffalo

“Bill Heavey is the convivial and erudite hunting/fishing/foraging/trespassing partner you never had—and just as well, because he generally returns from the 'wild' (backyard, park, and—yes—cemetery) bloodied and reeking. His entertaining yet sneakily informative tales will have you rolling in the thistle.”—William Alexander, author of The $64 Tomato

“This is a tale of a leap into the deep-end of extreme foodieism—clumsy, bold, courageous, hilarious, honest, and touching. Bill wrote an onion. The first layer is a funny, witty adventure story. Peel it back, and we'll find leaf upon leaf of how-to, coming-of-age, consumerist criticism, cultural discovery, plights real and imagined, and ultimately, a love story. Bill has given us all permission to not only discover a new facet of our edible lives, but to enjoy it.”—Duff Goldman, Ace of Cakes

“The age-old art of foraging takes Bill Heavey from his back yard to a Louisiana swamp and points beyond. But this is not a tale of trendy tablefare. With a healthy dose of skepticism, a dollop of humor, and even a dash of romance, Heavey transforms the typical ingredients of midlife crisis into a surprising feast of renewal, finding true sustenance in nature's garden.”—Langdon Cook, author of Fat of the Land

“A book with many layers, it’s refreshingly untrendy, and it’s narrated with great humor and honesty.”—PopMatters

Not as funny as a Patrick McManus book, but still quite an enjoyable and down to earth look at American options for foraging
By Amber M. Anderson
Between the title, cover art, and description, I very much expected this to be a very funny take on the topic, in line with the Patrick McManus outdoorsman books.

It's not.

It DOES have humor in it and many of the stories did make me smile if not laugh out loud, but it also is quite serious in many places with a lot of introspection by the author into himself and those he encounters. It also has a lot of profanity, a touch of drug use, and more than a few graphic descriptions of killing various animals, FYI.

But on the whole I very much enjoyed the book - Heavey isn't shy about sharing bits of his life and goes through his various experiences dealing with foraging. He apparently started as a writer for Field and Stream Magazine and similar publications as an "everyman" - i.e. not an expert but just as a guy who enjoys getting out there. In the process, he finds that getting his own food is quite a powerful experience and makes various acquaintances who encourage and grow this habit.

He does a great job of making himself and the people around him - his partial custody and picky eater daughter, his foul mouthed and holder of non-standard ethics friend Paula, his self sought guides in Cajun country and indigenous Alaska, the characters of the "local foodie" movement of San Francisco and his new found friend Michelle who forages to help her grocery bill with her two children.

Heavey looks into what the foraging opportunities are in a variety of settings both local to him: from the fruit trees of suburban DC, the grass of his own backyard, along and in the Potomac, the fungus in Arlington National Cemetery, and to which he travels: several tours and events sponsored by an entrepreneurial foraging "guru" in San Francisco and his very knowledgeable tour guides, hunting ducks/alligators/frogs/crawfish/etc in the Cajun Bayou, and hunting caribou with a native group in Alaska. On the whole you do get a very good picture of what some of the motives are and how hard it is to really feed yourself with your own two hands. For some people it's a way of life, for others a matter of pride or survival or cost reduction, for some a conceit or snobbery, for others just plain interest and fun.

In the end, you get to see some interesting experiences through the author's eyes, get to meet some interesting people, and get to think about what hunting (killing your own meat) and gathering (finding and seeking) and preparing (hand smoking, butchering, etc) really involve and mean. And, in the end: Sometimes even the Master foragers use store bought pie crust for their hand gleaned sour cherries.

Food Independence - Live by Foraging
By Brenda Frank
I understand Bill Heavey's desire to have food independence - live by growing, hunting, fishing and foraging food. It's the food side of living off the grid. Heavey challenges the lifestyle of the consumer who scouts in supermarkets buying shrink wrapped meat on Styrofoam trays and vegetables from the neatly arranged display under "natural" light, sprayed periodically to look fresh.

I took a personal interest in Heavey's story, being a Master Gardener and occasional forager and also living "inside the Beltway" around the District of Columbia. For me, foraging for natural edibles has the same lure as treasure hunting.

Although I did not expect hilarity in this book, I laughed out loud several times. For example, Heavey's "lawn salad" made from old weeds was not a great success. "It was agreeably crunchy at first bite, after which I settled in for a prolonged period of mastication. I chewed until I felt like the muscles on the sides of my head were actually increasing in size."

As a novice backyard gardener, Heavey experienced the common problems of correct soil preparation, buying seeds based on the enticing pictures on the packets, then, squirrels poaching his tomatoes. I understand the desire to take out these tree rats and know people, also living inside the Beltway, who fire paint ball and pellet guns at them. Being a bow hunter, Heavey instinctively went for his bow when confronted with squirrels creating mayhem in the tomato bed. Big Mistake! Not only is this illegal, but injuring the squirrel who escaped with an arrow impaling his leg is reprehensible, as acknowledged by Heavey. Upon the arrow hitting the targeted squirrel, Heavey relates that "my heart raced and a rush of conflicting chemicals flooded my system, exhilaration and shame, wonder and horror, pride and disgrace." These emotions were experienced before he realized the inhumane results of his action.

Some reviewers were offended by the hunting portions of this book. I was not. Heavey is not an irresponsible, bloodthirsty killer shooting animals for pleasure. No shooting for trophies here.

Heavey bow hunts - a more sportsmanlike type of hunting requiring patience, stealth and skill. He spent three years trying to kill a deer before succeeding. He is ethical in taking shots, trying for a double-lung shot because it results in the fastest death. Obviously, he also field dresses the kill and eats the meat. Neither Heavey nor his fellow hunters take pleasure in the death of an animal, only in the success of the hunt for the resulting meat.

Foraging in an urban setting is risky and difficult but possible, with delicious results. I have made delicious raspberry pies from berries picked in public parks and growing near apartment buildings. As a new urban forager, I have also stood, unknowingly, in deep poison ivy while harvesting juicy blackberries growing in a neglected lot near a gas station. This required a visit to a doctor for cortisone shots and pills, and LOTS of pain and suffering. That pie was expensive, indeed.

Heavey expanded the theme of living off the land to include interesting chronicles of the disappearing lifestyles of Louisiana Cajuns and Gwich'in Indians, living on the Alaskan tundra. He was able to find acceptance among them and participate in their hunting and fishing expeditions. Wild game is a critical portion of the diet of these people. Jody, Heavey's Cajun crawfisherman friend, estimated that 70 percent of his family's meat is wild game.

Reviewers also objected to Heavey's nighttime frogging trip in the Atchafalaya Basin with Jody. They used no gigs or mechanical grabbers. With bare hands, they just snatched the frogs from the surface of the water and put them in a rubber-coated wire envelope, a crawfish trap. The next day Heavey helped to butcher and clean the frogs. Later, families and friends had a frog feast, relishing the light, sweet meat cooked in a rich sauce piquant eaten over rice.

Heavey's ultimate success as an urban forager was finding and marrying a foraging soulmate. How can you beat that!

In the epilogue, Heavey tries to explain his hunger for a deeper connection to the natural world. "I was a modern man still trying to find out where I belonged." He wasn't born an Indian or a Cajun. He didn't grow up in a family of hunters or foragers. He just craved for a closer relationship to nature. "Was it possible to be nostalgic for something you'd never had?"

In sum, I found "It's Only Slow Food Until Your Try to Eat It" to be honest, interesting and well-written stories of Heavey's trials and success in foraging, as well as realistic, sympathetic descriptions of subsistence fishermen and hunters and foragers in San Francisco, Alaska and Louisiana.

One Man's Progression Towards Self-Sufficiency
By Ladyfingers
Being a fellow hunter/gatherer, I expected someone authoring a book on these subjects to be better informed. Only after reading a few chapters do readers discover Bill Heavey really doesn't know much about weeds, gardening and wild greens. Had he not written chapters about other people's far more interesting experiences, his own would be few and unremarkable. Mr. Heavey's personal fishing and hunting stories were better. It's obvious these are really his true passions.

Nevertheless, the author fills in the blanks nicely, and ties it all together with a wonderfully written introduction and epilogue. As a matter of fact, they were my favorite parts of the book. Those short sections say a lot about Bill Heavey's character, and others like him who hunger for a deeper connection with the natural world.

So there was all that: the ordinary twill of life; the ho-hum sturm und drang of the workplace: the ubiquitous absurdities, the annoying co-workers, the bloody deadlines and even bloodier bottom lines; the bland, eternal, Sisyphean, absolute, unrelenting, surreal certainty of the day-in-and-day-out of it all. Life as a slice of white bread, moistened with spit and rolled into a messy glob, a doughy ball that couldn’t make the slightest dent in the iron gates of life.

But then, suddenly, on August 27, 2002, all that changed. Suddenly, Rae-Jean’s uneventful life began to leaven and swell with hypotheticals. 'What if' grabbed a hold of it and pumped it a few times in its death grip.

The world in Sara Pritchard's book is a known world and yet a strange place, with a cast of homeless characters who wander in and out of the stories of the collection, all set in the same university town. The linked stories take place during the time when gender discrimination in the American workplace was blatant, and when classified ads were labeled "male" or "female" accordingly.

Sara Pritchard is the author of the novel-in-stories Crackpots, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and the critically acclaimed linked-story collection Lately. She's lived in West Virginia for over thirty years and teaches in the Wilkes University Low-Residency MA/MFA Creative Writing Program.

From Publishers Weekly
Pritchard (Crackpots) delves into the ordinary twill of life in this engrossing new collection of stories chronicling the underemployed and underchallenged of Morgantown, W.Va. In the two-part title story, dead-broke Wendy, who never outgrew the game of dress-up, responds to her lecherous boss, Little Big Man, by dressing in a series of ludicrous costumes and donning a button that reads, There's That Smell Again. In The Old Laughing Lady, Bunny faces the knowledge of her ex-husband's secret family by growing invasive kudzu that engulfs the neighborhood with the stealth and speed of a virus. Homeless sojourners, with names like Prophet Zero and the Green Man, serve as a subtle chorus across these stories, shifting in the peripheries of protagonists' lives. Green Man is a pseudonym for 52-year-old Archer, a self-described urban Thoreau, who secretly lives in the basement of university press copy editor Rae-Jean. Down there, Green Man naps, plays with Rae-Jean's dogs, and reads her books (he's particularly taken with Foucault), until the 18 flea bombs that Rae-Jean sets off one morning blow her house to smithereens. The free associations of Prophet Zero, a magnificent homespun orator with a melodious Barry White baritone, enter the workplace vernacular of Marcie's office, and worm their way into her office affair. Full of cutting humor and empathy, if occasionally too precious, Pritchard's new collection is a worthy, often very funny read. (July)

The Intriguing World of Sara Pritchard
By Maggie Douglas
Sara Pritchard's "Help Wanted: Female" is a delightful journey through a small Midwestern town that exists somewhere between "Main Street" and "The Circus of Dr. Lao." The characters who inhabit the houses, streets, parking lots and garage apartments of the world of these linked stories are quirky in ways which are perfectly believable and yet take one by surprise. I finished the book two weeks ago and immediately passed it to my best friend. She is reluctant to return it, so I'm buying a second one for myself. Like the Bible, the Koran, various teachings of the Buddha, Shakespeare, and Samuel Johnson's Dictionary, this is one book no home should be without.

The cover, however, should perhaps have a warning for those of us who are easily enticed. Since reading "Help Wanted: Female," I seem to have adopted--or at least made space for--a number of Pritchard's characters in my personal history; when my mind wanders, I find myself wondering what Small Appliance is up to and if he is all right;I am almost convinced that I met Prophet Zero and/ or Q-tip, as well as other characters, in my own prior sojourn in a wayward Midwestern youth--but I certainly didn't see them, then, as Pritchard does, with clarity, respect, and compassion. For me, the world of this book is my 'Forever Home,' the title of one of the most touching chapters.

Attention Must Be Paid
By Biggest Fan
As Mrs. Loman said, "Attention must be paid" - to these folks who are neither Kardashians nor movie stars, nor Desperate Housewives nor the Countess of Who-Ha. These souls live in the dim ground floor rent-controlled apartment in your building on the west side; or keep a room in the nearly abandoned, tumbling-down family home, just two blocks from where your nephew goes to school. These people sell us our papers in the morning, or answer the telephone in the hardware store. They wear a belt and suspenders at the same time. They wear socks with sandals. We pass them on the street or stand in front of us at the check-out line at the IGA. And we hope they count their change quickly - if we notice at all. But - in truth - we we barely notice that they're on the planet with us.

This collection of brilliant short stories suggests that Sara Pritchard sees them clearly and affectionately - and she imagines their lives, rich with detail and fantasy and unrequited - life. She's served them up to us in a great heaping spoonful of small town dreams and desperation. And they'll never really be invisible to us again. At least I hope not.

Great going, Ms. Pritchard. You may not be the help they wanted, but you sure are the help they needed to be recognized by so many of us, scooting by in our own little bubbles of self-importance. Thank you.

And - if you're reading this for a recommendation - take it as such. You will be well-served living in their world for a while.

Buy this book! There's nothing else like it.
By Anne B.
Sara Pritchard's stories are akin to a scream passing through humanity. Her characters are complex and real. Their stories are about chaos, loneliness, isolation, depression and regret but mostly about survival. While your heart aches because you identify with the sense of loss that permeates the lives of the characters, you savor the humorous descriptions and situations created by the author. Humor heals and Sara Pritchard doles it out in the perfect doses.

I want to have coffee with Rae-Jean, Nina, Abigail and Sissy, Bunny and Edna, Wendy and Roger. The fact that Alice James, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Ponce de Leon and Richard Burton are beloved, loyal dogs with their own insights and personalities endears me to the characters even more, if that's possible. Once you begin to read Help Wanted: Female, you are sucked into a different world where everyone knows Prophet Zero and the Green Man, where life is a little off-kilter, and you won't want to leave.

The writing is moving and the imagery beautiful. At the end of What's Left of the Jamie Archer Band, these words sum up an underlying message of hope.
"...one errant shooting star rips through the lining of the moth-eaten night."

Fake Reviews! 14 Out of 19 Top Reviews Fake!
By WIAPilot
I ordered this book primarily because of the exceptional reviews. When the book arrived, it was smaller than an average cookbook with poor paper quality. The book was "padded" with most of the recipes on one side of the page and the nutritional info on the opposite page. Even the page of the index was listed as 219 and the book didn't even have a page 219!

The recipes were not inspiring and there were only about 90 recipes in the entire book. I was pretty shocked that the book had been reviewed so well UNTIL I STARTED LOOKING AT THE REVIEWS! Almost all of the 5 star reviews were written by either the author or friends/family because that is the only book they have reviewed! This really disgusts me because reviews are pretty much all we can use in determining how well a book has been received.

I have REPORTED these reviews and have RETURNED my book for a full refund! Thank God for Amazon's great policies!

Weird combinations and not very tasty.
By Ann Lawrence
I was looking for healthy recipes that I could make in my slow-cooker -- this recipe book looked as though it would fill the bill. I selected two recipes that I thought sounded pretty good, but was surprised by the number and combination of spices listed. Nonetheless, I went out and bought those I didn't have. Both dishes were less than exciting. My husband wouldn't eat the leftovers after my first serving of each.

Must Buy Crock Pot Recipe Book
By SKoszyk
Fabulous, family-friendly cookbook! The recipes are full of nutritious, whole foods that are very common in the kitchen. Not only are the recipes low on the Glycemic Index, but many of them are low sodium, low fat, and high in fiber. The author also provides tips on how to reduce sodium from canned goods. My favorite part of the book: easy prep! The recipes are so simple to prepare for and they taste gourmet delicious.

Vajrayogini: Her Visualization, Rituals, and Forms (Studies in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism), by Elizabeth English

Vajrayogini is a tantric goddess from the highest class of Buddhist tantras who manifests the ultimate development of wisdom and compassion. Her practice is prevalent today among practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism. This ground-breaking book delves into the origins of Vajrayogini, charting her evolution in India and examining her roots in the Cakrasamvara tantra and in Indian tradition relating to siva.

The focus of this work is the Guhyasamayasadhanamala, a collection of forty-six sadhanas, or practice texts. Written on palm leaves in Sanskrit and preserved since the twelfth century, this diverse collection, composed by various authors, reveals a multitude of forms of the goddess, each of which is described and illustrated here. One of the sadhanas, the Vajravarahi Sadhana by Umapatideva, depicts Vajrayogini at the center of a mandala of thirty-seven different goddesses, and is here presented in full translation alongside a Sanskrit edition. Elizabeth English provides extensive explanation and annotation of this representative text. Sixteen pages of stunning color plates not only enhance the study but bring the goddess to life.

Great Book! - A must have for Tantric Practice !
By Vajracharya
I was initiated into Vajrayogini by Sakya Trizen. I recommend anyone that has been initiated into the "Yogini" systems -- Chakrasamvara, Vajrayogini, Hevajra, etc, obtain this book. It is better than any of the other Vajrayogini books that have been printed so far (not mentioning names) -- most of which just re-iterate the Tibetan monastic tradition. Because this book dissects and discusses the original Sanskrit texts --It is essential reading to understand the background of the practices, the nuances of the ritual, and the overal scheme of Buddhist tantra. Whether you believe that Buddhism took over "Saivite rituals" as Ms.English and her Prof Sanderson at Oxford believe, the book goes well beyond the historical backdrop to discuss in detail the ritual "moments". Many well put together graphs and tables break down the deities, correspondences, and practice elements in a helpful and explicative way. She also discusses the elements of sexual yoga in a frank, honest and accurate way throughout the book, something which few Tibetan monastics dare to do. In short, this is not a book that can be missing from your shelf !

A Fine Study
By John Wakeman
This is a fine - and beautifully produced and illustrated - study in the Indian (i.e. pre-Tibetan Buddhist) origins of the Vajrayogini cult. It examines the forms and practices associated with Vajrayogini in India, and introduces readers to recent academic thinking and research on this area. Academic specialists will have their own responses to the book, but practitioners and devotees of Vajrayogini, as well as anyone with an interest in the development of Buddhist tantra, will find much of interest and value in this study.
In this context, a response to Findlay Clark's contribution on this page is unavoidable. "Intellectual obscurantism" is a fine self-description of Clark 's 'review', given that - for a start - it relates to a mere 4 page section of a 563 page book as if this were the entire work! The misrepresentations indulged (clear to anyone who actually reads the book) and the loud noise of axes being ground speak for themselves.
English (p.37) quotes her Oxford supervisor Alexis Sanderson to the effect that 'long sections' of the root text of the Cakrasamvara tradition have been 'redacted' (not 'reduced', despite Clark's - disingenuous? - use of 'sic') from Saiva originals. Sanderson's work on this area may be controversial and some of it not yet published, but its credentials as academic research are unimpeachable. Papers by Sanderson that I've read make a strong research-led case for his claims, based on textual analysis. Disinterested questioning of these findings, based on research and objective evidence, would be of interest. Polemic based on sectarian assumptions is not. 'Buddhist practitioners' who really do find themselves 'offended' by academic research that challenges their assumptions might well reflect on whether 'taking offence' (i.e. anger) is recommended in Buddhist teaching as a helpful state of mind to be cultivated, or not.
On the issue of English having supposedly 'nowhere' discussed the opinions of B. Bhattacharya, see, e.g., p 427 where the point is made that the Saiva tradition developed 'its own tradition of Chinnamasta , borrowing and adapting from the [Buddhist] Trikayavajrayogini cult.' This alone shows that English does not adopt the simplistic position with regard to Saiva-Buddhist influence that Clark purports. As regards Dasgupta's comment, however able a scholar he may have been, it has to be noted that this was published 45 years ago (reprinted in 1974). In the interim - nearly half a century - scholars in Buddhist studies have continued to research this and related areas. A great deal of material has been made available and scrutinised - indeed, the area has flourished. Academic perspectives on Buddhist tantra have thus been greatly clarified, making more definite assertions possible.
The issue of 'authorisation' to translate also needs to be addressed. Surely, this is a (deliberate?) category error on Clark's part. English's book is an academic thesis, not a work of spiritual guidance or teaching. No spiritual tradition 'provided her with authorization to "translate" and publish these texts'. Academics have never considered such authorisation necessary, and nor should it be. This is quite different from the issue of academics having a sensitivity to the subjects of their study. On this issue, English has taken care - despite the fact that these are previously obscure Indian Buddhist sadhana texts which in most cases almost certainly have no living tradition in Tibetan Buddhism - to consult a number of Tibetan Buddhist teachers regarding the propriety of writing about what have traditionally been 'esoteric' teachings (e.g. Lama Jampa Thaye, pp. 106, 385 n.9). This also belies Clark's unpleasant sectarian point-scoring - a complete non sequitur - regarding what he calls the 'cultural arrogance' of the Buddhist order to which English belongs. Perhaps this explains the vituperative nature of the whole review. Let readers of this excellent and highly recommended book judge where the arrogance, if any, is to be found.

Wow! Wonderful ...

This book surveys forms of Vajrayogini and Varjravarahi in India, summarizes the Vajrayogini practices to be found in the Guhyasamayasadhanamala collection of sadhanas, and prints one sadhana from this collection, examining it in detail. English throughout discusses the philosophical assumptions of the sadhana within the larger context of Buddhist philosophical traditions. Scholarly, but at least for me, hard to put down - I learned so much from this book, which elucidated several details of tantric practice that I had been confused about. I found this book very helpful.

Roy Thomson Hall: A Portrait, by William Littler, John Terauds

A vibrant, richly illustrated commemorative book celebrating the first 30 years of Roy Thomson Hall, one of Canada’s most famous performance venues.

Roy Thomson Hall: A Portrait traces the first 30 years of what was initially known as "New Massey Hall." Arthur Erickson’s iconic design quickly became a symbol of a vibrant city emerging on the world stage. Home to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the hall has welcomed a range of acclaimed artists and lecturers, film presentations, and corporate events. The authors provide a background to the musical history of Toronto and an intimate portrait of the hall’s changes over the years. At the centre of this story are the artists, audiences, volunteers, and staff who have enriched and enlivened the hall since its opening in 1982.

Review
I love making music in the hall ― it’s a wonderful venue for recording and bringing exceptional live performances to the public. It is the true home of the TSO, and a landmark of great music in our city. (Peter Oundjian Music Director, Toronto Symphony Orchestra)

Acoustica fantastica! (Cecilia Bartoli)

I have a long and happy history of performances in Roy Thomson Hall, and for good reason. It is a welcoming, comfortable arts space and it allows the performer a real sense of, and connection with, the wonderful Toronto audiences. It is always a pleasure for me to return to this very special hall. (Renée Fleming)

Roy Thomson Hall is the most civilized concert hall…. It has perfect acoustics; it’s beautifully maintained, and they make the public feel very comfortable. (Tony Bennett)
