Everything Yearned For: Manhae's Poems of Love and LongingFrom Wisdom Publications

Manhae (1879-1944), or Han Yongun, was a Korean Buddhist (Son) monk during the era of Japanese colonial occupation (1910-1945). Manhae is a political and cultural hero in Korea, and his works are studied by college students and school children alike.

Everything Yearned For is a collection of 88 love poems, evocative of the mystical love poetry of Rumi, and even reminiscent of the work of Pablo Neruda.Though Manahe's poetry can be read allegorically on many levels - political and religious - it is completely unlike any other poetry in Buddhist or secular realm.

The first poem, "My Lover's Silence," narrates the lover's departure and establishes the enduring themes of the work: the happiness of meeting, the sadness of separation, the agony of longing and waiting, and, most of all, the perfection of love in absence that demands the cost of one's ongoing life, as opposed to the relief of death. The Korean word translated in these poems as "love" and "lover" is nim, though nim has many and broad interpretations. Understandably, the identity of Manhae's lover, or "nim" has been the subject of much speculation.

Manhae writes in his own preface:

"Nim" is not only a human lover but everything yearned for. All beings are nim for the Buddha, and philosophy is the nim of Kant. The spring rain is nim for the rose, and Italy is the nim of Mazzini. Nim is what I love, but it also loves me. If romantic love is freedom, then so is my nim. But aren't you attached to the lofty name of freedom? Don't you also have a nim? If so, it's only your shadow. I write these poems for the young lambs wandering lost on the road home from the darkening plains.

Review
"Hot, hot poetry from a Korean master. It's cause for celebration when one book can brighten so much darkness. Francisca Cho's definitive translation of Manhae's The Silence of Everything Yearned For is a revelatory experience, a wonderful journey to the heart of the heart, gently and wisely guided by a true master. This is the only book-length collection of poems ever published by Manhae (the pen name of the revered Korean activist-monk-poet Han Yong-un). Manhae not only bore witness to the history of his time but also took a leading part of it. . . Cho's indispensable English-language rendition also includes several chapters of skillful commentary on the poems' interwoven topics of Buddhism, activism, and love. In its mode of variations on a central theme--that of love--Everything Yearned For speaks to us more deeply than any linear narrative might. Rilke's Sonnets to Orpheus comes quickly to mind, also Whitman's original Leaves of Grass and Tagore's Lover's Gift." (Tricycle)

"Manhae's deceptively simple ecstatic poems draw on a tradition that goes back thousands of years. Manhae joins to that tradition his Korean Buddhist sensibility and practice, and considerable technical skills, producing a suite of poems of striking originality." (Sam Hamill, founder of Poets Against the War and author of Dumb Luck)

"I quickly found myself entraptured with the writing inside Everything Yearned For. [. . .] Francisca Cho does an amazing job with her translation. Her translation is true to Manhae's work as she leaves his extended prose intact, which previous translations have taken out or mutilated. Cho packs the book with everything a reader can yearn for. It's easy to see why she won the Daesan Literary Award for her translation. [. . . Manhae's] poetry dances on the page; it sings and shouts to the reader." (Korean Quarterly)

"This book is amazing." (Andrea McQuillin, editor of Shambhala Sun)

"A wonderful, wonderful book. These poems remind me of Rilke and Tagore. I love that you can't tell whether they are erotic, religious, political-or all three at once! They penetrate your heart like a gong at midnight." (Andrew Schelling, Naropa University, author of Wild Form, Savage Grammar: Ecology, Asia, Poetry)

"Discover Manhae's poetic genius in Cho's superb translation." (Mu Soeng, author of The Diamond Sutra: Transforming the Way We Perceive the World, and Trust in Mind: The Rebellion of Chinese Zen)

"Intense and poignant. Love takes Manhae, and the reader, to a place of awareness that he understands is a dream within a dream; but one with a tang of relative truth about it--the extremes of bliss and despair, a paradigm of duality." (DharmaLife)

"Manhae never considered himself a poet, but his powerful words have been captured sensitively and brilliantly by translator Francisca Cho. The words conjure sad, beautiful images and evoke the true splendor of Manhae's native Korea. Cho has nailed Manhae's distinctive, poetic prose with her graceful translation. Cho provides detailed analyses of the poems, as well as an overview of Manhae's life and the influences on his writing. Everything Yearned For will appeal to poetry lovers and all readers interested in Eastern spiritual voices. Recommended as a splendid, passionate gift choice." (New Age Retailer)

From the Publisher
"Francisco Cho has provided the definitive English translation of these remarkable poems. Manhae's long rhythmical lines seem to sweep forward with an almost Biblical cadence in some places, while in others breaking apart into brief, almost conversational phrases. Their mix of the philophical, mystical, and sensual are uniquely distinctive. A WONDERFUL VOYAGE AWAITS YOU." -from the foreword by David R. McCann, recipient of the Manhae Prize for Arts and Sciences, and Director of the Korea Insitute at Harvard University

From the Inside Flap
Review by Sam Hamill, author of Dumb Luck: "Manhae's deceptively simple ecstatic poems draw on a tradition that goes back thousands of years. Superb all the way around
By Glenn Hoback
A beautiful translation of the poems of Han Yong-un, nom de plume Manhae. The book itself is gorgeous as well, superbly constructed and with a lovely cover illustration. The author does a remarkable job in capturing the essence of meaning, while preserving the aesthetic beauty of the poetry from its original language.

Don't purchase this expecting a collection of romantic Shakespeare sonnets; you'll be slightly disappointed by the lack of lines you can recite to your intended. The closest it comes to "shall I compare thee to a summer day" is one poem which does indeed compare the intended to jade and other precious goods, but begins and ends with lines to the effect of "it's not quite right to call you beautiful." Kind of a mood killer if your goal is to impress that special someone.

What Manhae does provide is wonderful, utterly sublime lines of longing, the pain of seperation, and often unrequited desire. The title does well in capturing the sensibility of the poems - think of a type of love where the entire world and everything in it conspires to remind you of the object of your desire. The oft ambiguous sex of the narrator actually adds to this ambience, and the tone and content of some poems does lend a degree of believability to rumors that some (if not all) of the poems were written by a Buddhist nun instead of the implied author. One can easily see and interpret some of the works in the context of an author active in the nationalistic Korean independence movement

Superb work which will undoubtedly be the definitive translation. Manhae deserves to be brought out of obscurity for western readers and enjoyed, and this translation should do well to accomplish that.

Translations as they should be
By An Seon Jae
When this book was first published in 2005, the poet Robert Pinsky wrote in his Washington Post column: "One of the fathers of the Korean independence movement was Manhae, an important figure not only in poetry but also in religion, culture and politics. An American poet reads with a gasp that Manhae, a monk who profoundly influenced Buddhist thought and practice, was also a coauthor of the Korean Declaration of Independence. As Han Yong-un, he was also a founding modern poet. So here are significant accomplishments comparable to those of Thomas Jefferson, Walt Whitman and Ralph Waldo Emerson, all credited to someone born in 1879, the same year as the American businessman-poet Wallace Stevens. (. . .) In Cho's English renderings, these poems have the power to expand an American reader's notion of poetry." That's quite a strong endorsement!

Former American Poet Laureate Robert Hass, reviewing Ko Un's "Ten Thousand Lives" at about the same moment, included a mention of this book too: "Manhae, writing a sort of rhythmic prose in the manner of Tagore, produced something quite new in Korean literature, a book of intensely spiritual love poems. The situation of the lovers is not clear; even the gender of the beloved is not clear, and Manhae wrote a preface to the book which invited allegorical readings. The loved one is not only the beloved; it is also everything yearned for. If all living beings are the beloved for Sakyamuni, philosophy is the beloved for Kant. If the spring rain is the beloved for the rose, then Italy is the beloved for Mazzini.

Han Yong-un's career as a poet begins and ends with this one mysterious book, and its intensities have been read by several generations of poets as an allegory of political oppression, and in the postwar years the beloved became a Korea made whole again. Erotic anguish has become political anguish and also a text in Buddhist spirituality. Han Yong-un died in 1944, just before Korea was liberated from the Japanese by the bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Francisca Cho, in her fresh and intelligent rendering of the book, has retitled it Everything Yearned For: Manhae's Poems of Love and Longing.[4] By translating the Korean word nim, "love" in English, with the phrase from Manhae's preface, "Everything Yearned For," she has sidestepped the somewhat sappy diction of previous translations and suggested that muffled and painful quality of longing with which the poems are suffused."

If Pinsky and Hass can write like that about this book, what more can I add?

excellent collection from the forward on
By Kyle R
While I haven't read it through and through yet, these poems by Manhae are a gem that can be easily overlooked. A Korean buddhist monk turned poet, they have a really nice reciprocity to them. You get a direction to follow like "parting" or "introspection" and then by the end of the poem, Manhae has almost said, "actually, reverse that, it's te other way around." It's not a sense of mistaken purpose or a double-standard, it's a Buddhist mentality working its way into the literature. Does the Yin need the Yang or the Yang need the Yin...? Which one defines the other? Do they even bear a definition? These poems make you comfortable in your own heart and mind, which is like a gift, more than it is a poem.

"Bear with Me"

I have no choice but to leave; bear with this parting.
When you go over the ridge, don't look back.
My being is about to enter a grain of sand.

If you can't bear with this parting, bear with my death.
My lifeboat is sinking in a sea of shame.
Blow, make it drown quickly, and be glad for it.

If you can't bear my death, don't favor me with love.
Instead, make yourself unloveable.
I'll enter your heart and live in you.
Bear becoming one with me.
Love me not and I shall not love you.

Pick up this book and enjoy a fresh feeling of renewal in each one of Manhae's thoughts. Enjoy!

When the Devil Drives (Jasmine Sharp and Catherine McLeod Novels), by Christopher Brookmyre

The second installment in Christopher Brookmyre’s new crime series, When the Devil Drives is an intensely gripping literary thriller that delves into the darkest reaches of the human psyche.

Actress turned private investigator Jasmine Sharp has become accustomed to clients looking for long-lost relatives, so when a woman hires her to find her younger sister Tessa Garrion, Jasmine presumes the case will be relatively straightforward. The assignment takes her back into the world of professional theater, where she is warned off more than once for probing too deeply into the past.

Meanwhile, Detective Superintendent and mother-of-two Catherine McLeod is called to the scene of a murder in the Highlands. Following a theatrical outdoor performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream at Cragruthes Castle, a prominent figure in the Scottish arts community is shot dead during a post-performance photo call. With her initial leads turning out to be red herrings, McLeod struggles to determine the killer’s motive.

Jasmine soon uncovers Tessa’s involvement in a drug-riddled Highlands estate retreat replete with occult rituals, which implicates more than a few people in the upper echelons of Scotland’s arts scene. Tessa’s disappearance in the summer of 1981 begins to look increasingly like murder, but the guilty will stop at nothing to keep the truth hidden. As Jasmine’s and McLeod’s investigations intertwine, it becomes evident that both cases are far more convoluted and dangerous than anticipated.

(It is a bittersweet reunion; Jasmine always wondered what her life would have been like had she continued to tread the boards.) This time, however, the drama is very real: a 30-year-old unsolved mystery that could shatter the reputations of a few much-touted theater icons. Meanwhile, Detective Superintendent Catherine McLeod contemplates clues in the murder of a theatergoer who stepped onstage for a photo shoot following a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. (Talk about your reverie turned nightmare.) The lives of the two sleuths seemed destined to intersect, and consummate crime-fiction writer Brookmyre (Where the Bodies Are Buried, 2012) is a master at rendering ingenious, intertwining plots. Sharply drawn characters and an idyllic Scottish setting add further appeal to this engaging entry in which foul play’s the thing. --Allison Block

"Tartan noir" at its very best
By Bookreporter
Christopher Brookmyre has written a great number of books, not always to a wide audience but to a very loyal one. He is probably best known as working in what is called the "Tartan noir" genre. Arguably, his recently introduced Jasmine Sharp series set in his native Scotland --- consisting of WHERE THE BODIES ARE BURIED from 2012 and the newly published (in the United States) WHEN THE DEVIL DRIVES --- does not fit neatly into that classification. Still, that is no reason for Brookmyre's fanbase to turn away from him.

The elements that have attracted readers to Brookmyre since his early efforts are abundantly present in his latest work: complex plots, deep examinations into those dark aspects of the human personality and psyche that are simultaneously fascinating and repellent, and, at the core, a puzzling and intelligent mystery or two. It is difficult to imagine what more one could ask for.

WHEN THE DEVIL DRIVES opens with Sharp having inherited her uncle's private investigation agency, where she had been employed on a part-time basis while attempting to pursue an acting career. Having demonstrated a skill at locating missing persons, Sharp is retained by a new client to find her younger sister, Tessa Garrion. The case is colder than cold --- Garrion disappeared some three decades before --- but Sharp, as one might expect from her previous outing, is undaunted. Interestingly enough, the investigation takes her back to the world of the arts, specifically the theater.

It turns out that the missing woman was not living the life of a nun when she disappeared. Rather, she was a somewhat frequent visitor to an estate retreat where the occult in its more extreme forms was practiced, and drug use and abuse were the norm. Among the retreat's patrons were many who were involved in Scotland's art scene, including some whose influence extends far beyond the theater. Sharp is warned off her investigation when she begins to obtain solid leads but also digs too deeply into matters that have lain dormant for decades. However, she is undeterred and thus plunges straight ahead into deeper danger as it becomes clear that Garrion's disappearance was the result of foul play.

Meanwhile, a far more recent death is the subject of a separate investigation by Police Detective Superintendent Catherine McLeod, who is tasked with looking into the murder of a prominent actor following a live Shakespearean performance and during a post-play photo-op. McLeod believes motive is the key here, yet is led down several false paths, possibly deliberately. As one might expect, her case begins to slowly intersect with Sharp's (one of the book's very few elements that is somewhat predictable), despite the marked difference in time that separates the subjects of the inquiries, with the most notable common element being the great degree of danger that both investigators face as they come ever closer to the truth.

I was a huge fan of WHERE THE BODIES ARE BURIED. In WHEN THE DEVIL DRIVES, Brookmyre does an excellent job of advancing the general storyline concerning Sharp while meeting and exceeding the bar of expectation the first volume created. While Brookmyre's long-time readers may be a bit unsettled by the slight turn in subject matter, their time and interest in delving into these two books will be more than rewarded.

Can we have the real Christopher Brookmyre back please?
By Keris Nine
When the Devil Drives opens up with a thoughtful meditation on death, on the taking of a life and of the consequences of living with that action. Yeah, I know - it's the last thing you would have expected from a Christopher Brookmyre novel in the past. Death, yes - but usually from the perspective of someone considering what a messy business it is, how on earth they're going to get those stains off the ceiling and how to dispose of the inconvenient dead body that's been left lying around. But then, as we've seen from Where the Bodies Are Buried, this is the new reformed, reinvented, reconstituted Chris Brookmyre, and now everything is a bit more sedate, respectable, conventional and, sadly, starting to get more than a little dull.

Admittedly, not everyone liked the first Jasmine Sharp outing, but I thought it held out some promise and was a welcome change of pace for a writer who needed to expand and develop his range. This is not in any way expanding your range. For whatever reason, Brookmyre seems to have shied away from the obvious teaser at the end of the last book, sidelining Glenn Fallon and even leaving Detective Superintendent Catherine McLeod to plod away to little effect on the procedural subplot. That means, for a long while at least, that we're left with actress-turned-private-investigator Jasmine Sharp for the bulk of the case, and the book is consequently very slow to get off the ground. Leaving aside her day job of staking out benefit and insurance fraud cases, Jasmine's investigation of a woman who disappeared back in 1981 puts her into the middle of a possible murder involving a lot of now prominent figures in the local arts community, and suggestions of satanic rituals.

The details of the case aside - not a very imaginative one - and the fact that the author seems to have saddled himself with a weak lead character who doesn't develop in any significant way from the first book, what's disappointing is how toothless the new Brookmyre is. I don't mind the lack of violence, the absence of the high body count or the considerable toning down of the expletive quotient, but there's really nothing more substantial in its place. Even as a satire of the Scottish arts community, this is very weak material, involving them in drugs and satanic rituals in a ludicrous case that drags towards a conventional, if nonetheless satisfying, crime thriller resolution, with no digressive rants or witty diatribes at the state of the nation and no incisive debunking of the establishment.

Brookmyre is evidently still a fine writer, so good that he can turn his hand to the conventional crime thriller and write it well, but I think fans, rightly, expect more from this talented author than mediocrity. Can we perhaps ask for an Iain M Banks/Iain Banks-style split with Chris and Christopher Brookmyre books? Surely that would be a happy arrangement for everyone?

The second Jasmine Sharp novel
By TChris
Where the Bodies Are Buried introduced readers to actress-turned-detective Jasmine Sharp. In When the Devil Drives, Jasmine has inherited her uncle's detective agency. Alice Petrie hires Jasmine to find Alice's sister, Tessa Garrion, from whom Alice has long been estranged. Tessa was last known to be working as an actress before she dropped out of sight. As Jasmine tries to track down Tessa's past, it becomes clear that some or all members of a short-lived production company, now thirty years defunct, are concealing a dark secret about their past. A second storyline follows DS Catherine McLeod as she investigates the shooting of an arts patron that occurred during a production of Shakespeare at a castle in the Highlands.

When the Devil Drives has an interesting structure. The novel opens with a confession of murder, but we don't know the identities of either the confessor or the victim. The story eventually journeys back in time before, returning to the present, the two storylines converge. Toward the end, Christopher Brookmyre ratchets up the tension, adding the elements of a thriller to a murder mystery.

The plot is a multiple whodunit. In the tradition of mystery writers, Brookmyre sets up several suspects who may have committed murder. When one of those suspects is killed, the reader wonders whether that suspect murdered Tessa and was killed by someone else, or whether a different suspect murdered them both. The story is realistic, avoiding the over-the-top motivations that mar so many murder mysteries, while at the same time employing the sort of misdirection that has the reader wondering just how over-the-top the intricate plot might turn out to be. As Brookmyre peels apart his cast of flawed human beings, they all seem capable of murder -- and at the same time, they seem like people we might know.

Theater provides the novel's thematic setting. Jasmine trained as an actress and sometimes yearns for that life rather than the one that has been thrust upon her. The Scottish branch of the world financial crisis -- where, as everywhere else, bank executives eat caviar as the economy goes down the toilet -- furnishes the secondary setting. Although the worlds of theater and finance are miles apart, Brookmyre showcases the arrogance and passion that are prevalent in both.

Catherine plays a lesser role than Jasmine, but she's an equally intriguing character. Like Jasmine, she's capable of rethinking her positions, of listening to others and benefitting from their wisdom. Catherine dominates her passive husband, who (in a minor subplot) disagrees with her insistence that their son be forbidden from playing violent videogames. Whether imaginary violence begets real violence is a theme that animates the novel.

When the Devil Drives includes some flashbacks to the previous Jasmine Sharp novel that aren't particularly relevant to the story. It isn't necessary to read the last one to enjoy its successor. Both novels are infused with local color and written in effervescent prose. This one is slightly more enjoyable than the first (the conclusion left the trace of a smile on my lips), and I'm looking forward to the next.

Messianic Judaism is Not Christianity: A Loving Call to Unity, by Stan Telchin

The apostle Paul wrote that all believers--Jewish and Gentile--are to serve the Lord together as "one new man." But a growing movement today seeks to keep that from happening.

As Stan Telchin explains, proponents of Messianic Judaism are confusing both Jewish and Gentile followers of Jesus and dividing the church. Their insistence on following rabbinic form and their statements that Jewish believers need to be in Messianic synagogues in order to maintain their identities are unbiblical. Telchin discusses the growth of this movement, its unscriptural doctrines, and its ineffectiveness in Jewish evangelism.

Those who have been swept up by the nostalgia and beauty of "Jewishness" or who have been hurt by division in the Body or who love Israel will find their hearts and minds freed by this firm but loving message.

From the Back Cover
What's the problem with Messianic Judaism?

Stan Telchin, a Messianic Jew and former pastor, explores in depth the heart and soul of Messianic Judaism. He exposes the motive behind its creation, its controversial doctrines, and its ineffectiveness in Jewish evangelism.

Messianic Judaism has grown significantly in fewer than four decades. While intended originally to appeal to Jewish people, unexpectedly it appeals also to Gentiles. Telchin, in following the teaching of the apostle Paul, sees Messianic Judaism as divisive. With a firm and loving approach, he addresses the dangers of this movement, reiterates God's intention for his church to serve as "one new man" and, most importantly, advocates unity among the body of believers.

Perhaps you're a pastor concerned with the enticing pull of Messianic Judaism on your congregation. Perhaps you've merely wondered about the validity of this movement. Or maybe you're a Gentile who has been made to feel less than worthy. Whatever the reason, if you believe that God sees a difference between Jews and Gentiles in the Body of Christ, then this book will help you think again.

"It took courage for Stan to write so pointedly from his broad and insightful experiences within the Messianic movement. Forthright and comprehensive, these chapters deal with a problem all followers of Jesus face-the desire to be accepted by those who have yet to experience God's transforming love."-Arthur F. Glasser, Ph.D., dean emeritus, School of World Mission, Fuller Theological Seminary

"What Stan tells you in this book may come as a revelation. Certainly it will be controversial. Questions should arise, and much discussion should be the result."-Moishe Rosen, founder, Jews for Jesus

"Whether you agree with everything he says or not, you will find the book interesting and enlightening."-D. James Kennedy, Ph.D., senior minister, Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church

Important analysis, but poor conclusion
By Amazon Customer
Stan Telchin provides an expose of sorts about the Messianic Movement. He provides a lot of interesting facts, but offers a conclusion that misses the mark. His book is pretty light reading, and his writing style easy to follow. Some of the book is supported by statistics (which are not explained, but references are given), but the bulk of the conclusions are derived from the author's personal experience (which is extensive, but hardly complete). As a point of reference, I am a Gentile believer in Yeshua (Jesus), I have attended Messianic Congregations since 1999, and I have helped lead one since 2003.

Stan Telchin offers a valid Biblical analysis of how some people interpret Messianic Judaism. By Messianic Judaism, the author seems to refer to anyone who practices Christianity in a Jewish way. The main critique he discusses, and one with which I agree, is that too many Messianic Jews/Gentiles try so hard to be accepted by mainstream Judaism that they begin to sacrifice the Gospel. As Telchin points out, some in Messianic Congregations emphasize Talmudic adherence to the Torah, which is something that even Yeshua Himself did not do. He points out how some groups divide based upon Jewish and Gentile heritage, and this is of course wrong, but just because in his experience some groups do this by no means characterizes the entire movement. He points out that some believers felt peer pressure to keep a kosher diet, but then again does this type of scenario happen in other groups as well? Messianic Congregations may not be for everyone, but just because a few people have had problems is no reason to conclude that all of them are unnecessary..

Although Mr. Telchin does admit that there may be congregations that do not fit this profile (and yes there are), he seems to throw out the baby with the bathwater, as it were. What I found disturbing is how quickly Telchin turns his facts into his main thesis, that there is really no need for Messianic Congregations. One example of how he reaches this conclusion is that issues can be so divisive, lets get rid of them. I find this to be a very myopic conclusion. Should we should disband all Baptist and Charismatic Congregations because they cannot agree on Tongues? Of course not. He also cites as evidence that very few Jews today are in touch with their ancestral traditions, so why use these traditions to reach them?

Telchin cites as a reason to disband Messianic Congregations that only 4% of Jewish people became believers because of Messianic Congregations. Again by this logic, why not close up all evangelistic outreaches to say the Muslim world because only a few percent convert? I sense the frustration in Telchin's words, but to close up Messianic Congregations based upon statistics seems to be following business models and not necessarily the Holy Spirit.

In all, I think Mr. Telchin provides a very important analysis about some types of Messianic Congregations. His message, though harsh, was delivered in love, and in this manner I have great respect for his words. These groups, which over-emphasize Jewishness at the expense of the Gospel, should take note. But to conclude that Messianic groups are themselves therefore a divisive force is unfair, and un-Biblical. The book is important to read for some good facts, but be wary of the conclusion.

For those who were angered at the conclusions, Telchin does provide a good message that we as the body of Messiah should not seek to be divisive. To those who have not been a part of Messianic groups, and might not want to based upon this book, rest assured that not all Messianic groups behave this way. Telchin's analysis represents a kind of "worst case scenario" that should be avoided at all costs. But at least the author defines the problem, which should contribute to the healing process.

Helpful, irenic critique
By R. Cannata
His conclusion: "Messianic Judaism and Messianic synagogues have no biblical, theological, historical or pragmatic justification." (p. 25). Telchin knows that the modern Messianic movement is more than just Christianity contextualized for ethnic Jews. Their desire to be a '4th branch of Judaism" is insulting to both Judaism and Christianity.

Telchin is no theologian, but he has a very interesting story to tell.

His requisite chapter on antiSemiticism includes some heart-breaking sound bites from John Chrysostom.

Living Zen, Loving God, by Ruben L. F. Habito

The release of Ruben Habito's new book, Living Zen, Loving God has coincided with a rave review from Publishers Weekly magazine:

"Habito may not seem himself as a revolutionary, but his humble life calling - to illuminate the commonalities between Zen Buddhism and Christianity - seems a profound gift. Habito excels in illuminating the connective spiritual tissue between the two religions, while explaining the principles of Buddhism. This is an excellent book for readers who want to deepen their understanding of Christianity, as well as Buddhism." - Publishers Weekly

Exactly right. This wonderful book, in its friendly, informative tone, carefully explains Buddhist ideas - from key concepts like Emptiness and The Truth of Suffering to an in-depth and enlightening examination of the Heart Sutra - all in terms that will help modern Christian practitioners to deepen their faith, and Buddhists, to revitalize and broaden their perception and understanding.

This is a book with immense value to anyone interested in interreligious dialogue and studies, and as such, has already won accolades from Habito's contemporaries. (See below.)

Habito, a practicing Catholic and former Jesuit priest - as well as an acknowledged Zen master and professor in the School of Theology at Southern Methodist University - makes a clear case that Zen practice can deepen a Christian's connection to God, further clarify the Gospel teachings of Jesus, and enable one to live a more joyous, compassionate, and socially engaged life. Habito demonstrates that the practice of Zen meditation and even some elements of the Buddhist worldview can enable one to love God more constantly and commit to the service of the Realm of Heaven and the human community more wholeheartedly.

Ruben L.F. Habito is the author of numerous publications, in both Japanese and English, on Zen and Christianity and is a prominent figure in the Buddhist-Christian Dialogue. A native of the philipines, Habito served as a Jesuit priest in Japan under the guidance of the great spiritual pioneer Father Hugo Enomiya-Lassalle and studied Zen with renowned teacher Koun Yamada. He lives in Dallas, Texas.

From Publishers Weekly
Perhaps one of the most radically healing acts available to humanity today is to bridge the distance between the world's major religions-helping devotees discover their common spiritual ground instead of fuel for their political conflicts. Habito may not see himself as a revolutionary, but his humble life calling-to illuminate the commonalities between Zen Buddhism and Christianity-seems a profound gift. As a native of the Philippines, he began his spiritual training as a contemplative Jesuit priest in Japan. Later he became a pupil of Buddhism under renowned teacher Koun Yamada Roshi. This offering is specifically aimed at the Christian community, helping readers expand their experience of Christ through the teachings of Buddha. For instance, he compares the Zen teachings of dying to ego-attachments in order to reach enlightenment as being similar to the Christian experience of "dying to one's old self" and being reborn into an entirely new life of Christ. Habito excels in illuminating the connective spiritual tissue between the two religions, while also explaining the principles of Buddhism. When speaking to suffering, he notes that both religions ask followers to embrace the realities of suffering in order to offer wisdom and relief. This is an excellent book for readers who want to deepen their understanding of Christianity as well as Buddhism. It includes an Appendix, excerpting conversations with his teachers-Koun Yamada Roshi and Father Hugo Enomiya-Lassalle, S.J.

What a wonderful book
By Swing King
Ruben Habito is certainly not a household name for many of us, and yet he is a prominent figure in the Zen tradition. He is a native of the Philippines, and the current Zen master of the Maria Kannon Zen Center in Dallas since 1990. Obviously the first thing which hits one when glancing at the title of this book is Thich Nhat Hanh's similar title "Living Buddha, Living Christ." In a sense the goal is quite similar. Habito has always been vigorous in supporting inter-religious discussion between members of various faiths. As a teen, he explains how he was drawn to the Jesuit order and later was sent to Japan on missionary work. He marks this as a major turning point in his life.
He was assigned to Kamakura, where he came to understand the language and culture. The priest who looked after him in Japan, Fr. Hand, was ironically studying at a Zen center there under Yamada Koun Roshi. Habito joined the sitting group, and found himself very much at home in Zen practice. He has since retained both of these traditions as his spiritual roots. In 1978, Ruben received Dharma transmission from Yamada Roshi. During the years between meeting Roshi and first coming to Japan, Habito had been there for almost 17 years. He'd experienced a lot of struggling being a member of two seemingly irreconcilable religious traditions. Christianity and Zen Buddhism. But through diligence and hard practice, he has been able to show people the path of a reconciliation between these two faiths. He remarks that it is his Zen practice that allowed him to come to clear and powerful understanding of Christian scripture. Led him to an EXPERIENCING of the gospels, not just mere intellectual understanding. This book is a must have for members of either faith looking for a way to open the table for dialogue, or to accentuate their faith with the best food of another tradition. This book was wonderful, enjoy it.

AWAKENING TO LIFE IN ITS FULLNESS
By Roland Ropers
Professor Dr. Ruben L.F. Habito is a professional teacher of religious sciences and spirituality at the Perkins School of Theology in Dallas/Texas. At the same time is an authorized ZEN-Master who underwent a very long and strict ZEN-training in Kamakura/Japan under Yamada Koun Roshi (1907 - 1989). Born in the Philippines in 1947 Habito is wonderfully nurtured with Eastern mentality a thought. In 1970 Habito came as a young Jesuit to Japan and was very soon discoveréd as one of the most brillant young teachers at Sophia University. Habito masterfully combined scientific work with meditative practice. He is married to a German sinologist and his the father of 2 beautiful boys.

Habito knows who to bridge and reconcile East & West, Zen-Buddhism and Christianity and unfolds a cosmic realm in which both religious traditions can be felt as non-separate. Habito has many ZEN-disciples all over America and is a highly respected capacity in spiritual guidance. According to Habito a profound enlightment experience will not keep people away from everydays' life, problems and conflicts. ZEN will bring people who are in search direct into the heart of the world. The Kingdom of GOD is at hand -- here and now. The very present moment at any time is the greatest challenge for all people walking on a spiritual path. Ruben Habito is a master who accompanies his disciples through the jungle of darkness and obstacles towards the peak of light and liberation. "Living ZEN -Loving GOD" is a spiritual masterpiece by which readers and practioners may be awakened to real life in its fullness.

A "blessing" of inclusivenes ...
By C. Helton
A most thought provoking book that allows a "blessing" to come through for those, like me, who find value and depth in both Christianity and Buddhism. Would highly recommend this book to anyone who has felt conflicted about how to embrace both without any guilt of betraying one's Christian values.

Review
"The travel vocabulary was especially helpful. Some of the smaller towns we explored did not have a lot of English speakers and so we had to rely on my Korean skills to navigate the buses, trains, and taxis. And these books are small so they fit easily into a purse or backpack without weighing you down." —These Temporary Tents blog

Great for Taekwondo teachers
By Cathy C,
I'm a Taekwondo teacher. I'm not fluent in Korean, but I do like to use as much Korean terminology in the dojang as possible. This book has been a great resource for me to honor Taekwondo's Korean heritage and make our dojang a unique, Korean-language-based training hall. The book is separated into easy-to-use sections ("Small Talk", "Eating Out", "Sports Activities"), making it effortless to find what I need for the day's classes. I'm trying to introduce new phrases every day, and the children I teach are picking up more and more Korean easily. This book makes it so simple to do. I highly recommend it! Thanks, Tuttle!
