After that moment when you've lost all reason
for going back where you started, when going ahead
is no longer a Yes or No, but a matter of fact,
you'll need to weigh, on the one hand, what will seem,
on the other, almost nothing against something
slightly more than nothing and must choose
again and again, at points of fewer and fewer
chances to guess, when and which way to turn.
That's when you might stop thinking about stars
and storm clouds, the direction of wind,
the difference between rain and snow, the time
of day or the lay of the land, about which trees
mean water, which birds know what you need
to know before it's too late, or what's right here
under your feet, no longer able to tell you
where it was you thought you had to go.
David Wagoner is the author of two dozen books of poetry and ten novels. A longtime teacher at University of Washington, he was the editor at Poetry Northwest. He lives in Seattle, Washington.

About the Author
David Wagoner: David Wagoner, often referred to as the leading poet of the Pacific Northwest, was born in Ohio and raised in Indiana. Before moving to Washington in 1954, Wagoner attended Pennsylvania State University where he was a member of the Naval ROTC and received an M.A. in English from Indiana University. Wagoner was selected to serve as chancellor of the Academy of American Poets in 1978, replacing Robert Lowell, and he served as the editor of Poetry Northwest until its last issue in 2002. Known for his dedication to teaching, he was named a professor emeritus at the University of Washington. Wagoner has been compared stylistically to his longtime teacher and friend, Theodore Roethke.

A Poet Who Understands How Memory Functions

David Wagoner has been writing poetry for many years and every new book of collected poems he publishes shows a heightened ability to communicate those intangible aspects of the marriage of our thoughts, memories, moments in time we never want to lose and comes up with ever more tender and poignant words that capture what we may not access without his guidance.
Wagoner recalls that ethereal childhood of experiences as well as anyone writing. In his masterful way he is even able to conjure events and thoughts that we may not be able to mold with his gift:
MOTHER'S NIGHT
She's celebrating it for me. She's coming back
from the place where she was scattered, form the place
where she was introduced to medical students
and their teachers and was slowly taken apart,
back from where she lost herself among nurses,
from what was left of her house, from her single bed,
from her sink and her kitchen window where she could see
the dead stalks in her garden. She's coming back,
her arms full of the flowers I gave her once
a year in April, and she's asking me
to put them back on the stems in the greenhouses
they came from, to let them shrink away form the light.
Wagoner has a gentle sense of humor that he uses like few other writers, as in the following:
ROOMING WITH JESUS
Though he would have no clothes worth borrowing
except for amusement, he wouldn't borrow yours
and leave them scattered around, unwashed.
He would forgive you for making impolite noises
and listen to any exaggerated entries
in your overlong, untitled, unpublished,
and unpublishable autobiography
with its anecdotes about schools and carnal love
with a straight, polite face. When the rent was due
and you needed to render unto the landlord
what was the landlord's, he would forgive and forget
if you forgot or didn't or couldn't give,
and he would clean up after himself. If you didn't,
he would do it for you, and you'd feel guilty,
naturally, and most certainly move out
when he gave shelter to beggars, thieves, crackpots,
lepers, down-and-out whores, or you again.
The initial poem in the collection truly sets the mood for the gems that follow:
AFTER THE POINT OF NO RETURN
After that moment when you've lost all reason

Delighted to discover this poet

Some time ago a friend recommended this book to me and sent me the title poem "After the Point of No Return." I hesitated to get the book, for though the example poem was magnificent, often in a collection there is one gem of a poem among a pile of ho-hum material. I was most pleasantly surprised to find poem after poem highlighting little-noticed details of the world around, inviting new perspectives on life, relationships, memories, and dreams. This book is a treasury of marvels, and I highly recommend it. I'll be looking for more of David Wagoner's work.

No Return for this volume!

This is the first book of poetry that I can open to any page and enjoy the poem printed there...I love Wagoner's view on life and his run on poems that end after a breathful or two of words with a little twist...
