About the Author
Ama Adhe Tapontsang is a native of the Kham region of eastern Tibet, where she spent a happy childhood, and is an activist dedicated to securing the much-needed freedom of her country. Imprisoned for twenty-seven years for her resistance activities following the invasion of her country by the Chinese Communists in the 1950s, she faced inhuman torture and deprivation. Following her release, she left in 1987 for India, where she now lives in Dharamsala. The Voice That Remembers is the story of her life.

Joy Blakeslee, M.A. Ed, J.D., is a writer and teacher who specializes in human rights, history, and literacy. Blakeslee has worked in civil rights law, as a teacher for the New York Department of Education, and as an independent researcher. She has visited India many times, and is profoundly impressed by the strength, determination, and spirituality of the Tibetan people. She is currently co-writing a book with Dr. Gloria Frelix about post-Civil Rights era Mississippi, and corporate, environmental racism. Blakeslee lives in Florida.

I have traveled a long distance from the land of my youth, from the dreams and innocence of childhood, and have come to see a world that many of my fellow Tibetans could never have dreamed of.

There was no choice but for me to make this journey. Somehow, I have survived, a witness to the voices of my dying compatriots, my family and friends. Those I once knew are gone, and I have given them my solemn promise that somehow their lives will not be wiped out, forgotten, and confused within a web of history that has been rewritten by those who find it useful to destroy the memory of many I have known and loved. Fulfilling this promise is the only purpose remaining in my life.

As a witness, I have prepared long and carefully. I do not understand the reason that this has come to be my part to play; but I understand very well the purpose of what must be said. Although the world is a bigger place than I had dreamed, it is not so large that all its inhabitants are not somehow connected. Sooner or later, actions make their way in a chain of effects from one person to another, from one country to another, until a circle is completed. I speak not only of the past that lives in me, but of the waves that spring from the rock thrown into the water, moving farther and farther until they reach the shore.

I am free now. There are no guards outside my door. There is enough to eat. Yet an exile can never forget the severed roots of beginnings, the precious fragments of the past carried always within the heart. My greatest desire is to return to the land of my birth. That will not be possible until Tibet is once again the land of her own people. At this time, I am considered an outlaw by the Chinese administration because I have chosen not to lower my head and try to forget the years of slavery that so many of my people have endured.

But I can remember back beyond the years of sorrow...looking outside the window of my present home in Dharamsala, I can see a mountain illumined by the evening moon. Though it is beautiful, it reminds me of another, greater mountain below which my early life unfolded.

I grew up in freedom and happiness. Now those memories seem to belong to another time, to a place far away. As I pass through the hours of each day, my heart remains with the memories of my family and friends whose bones have become part of a land now tread by strangers.

In 1987 the time came for me to leave my native land. In order to do this, it was necessary to convince the authorities that I would soon return and would speak to no one of my life's experiences: of the destruction of so many lives through torture, starvation, and the degradation of slave-labor; of so many monasteries, the ancient treasures of which were desecrated and stolen for the value of the gold they contained; of the countless thousands of monks, nuns, and lamas who died in the labor camps; of my own family, most of whom perished as a direct result of the occupation of our land.

As I prepared for my journey they told me, "It is not good to die in a foreign land. One's bones should rest in the land of one's birth." My heart agrees, and it saddens me to live with my people in a community of refugees. Yet, the heart of a culture lives in its people. Its preservation resides in their willingness and freedom to carry on its traditions. It is only in exile that I am free to speak of my life's joys and sorrows. Until my land is free, it is in exile that I must remain.

Within my heart lies the memory of a land known as Kham, one of Tibet's eastern regions. In voicing my experiences, I hope that the culture of my homeland as well as the horrendous suffering and destruction imposed on its people will not continue to be easily dismissed as a casualty of what has often been termed progress.

an eye-opener; truly a heroic story of a woman's survival

My heart and respect goes out to this woman who, still living today, survived the atrocities the chinese revolutionaries inflicted on her. I applaud her determination not to be "reeducated" by the communists throughout her entire imprisonment and her success in not allowing this to happen. I also applaud her perserverance in maintaining her faith, when it would be so easy to abandone this in such circumstances. Noone should have to withstand the brutal, inhumane kinds of behavior she did. Throughout the book and even afterwards, I still ask myself the same question "how could anyone do such things to another human being?". Was truly affected by the story and am much more aware of the Tibetan struggle as a result. Highly recommend this for a week-end read!

Women and Tibetan Freedom

I have read a number of books on Tibet, but this was the first from a womans point of view. To learn not only about women in Tibet but women in general was very educational. Being one of very very few to survive her prison ordeal Ama has taken the task of sharing the story of many of her dead friends. The attrocities have been played down to some extent, compared to other books I have read. Good for the sensative but curriouse reader. Worth while.

A True Heroine

This is one of my favorite books of all time--among thousands of books I've read. Writing with great honesty and humility, Ama Adhe's courage and compassion shine like a lamp for anyone faced with oppression, torture and brutality for their beliefs and devotion to their homeland and people. My heart goes out to her with great gratitude for sharing her story with the world. I hope others will read it and treasure the example of her spirit. I think her book made me a better person.

Pretty bad

There isn't much thought put into this book I'm afraid. I work with Varnish every day and I hope we might buy a bunch a give to people we train or hire.I don't think the author properly understands how Varnish should be used. There is advice in here which is pretty bad shows the authors lacking experience. A random example on the page I have open is how the author tells how to add a cookie to a the hash in order to create user specific caching but fails to mention the extreme complications this has for cache invalidation.
On the next couple of pages the author talks about "bans" - without even mentioning smart bans. Flipping through "load balancing" I get a novel and completely wrong explanation for what the DNS director does.

Stick with the freely available docs or "The Varnish Book" (also free). More effort has been put into these than this piece of garbage.

Good, concise guide for beginners to intermediate Varnish users

Overall, this is a solid and short (only 56 pages) guide for anyone who has no-to-minimal experience with Varnish.

Note:
It does expect some knowledge of the HTTP protocol.

Pros:
Beginners should get enough information to understand how to bootstrap their first installation and achieve most basic needs, without being intimidated by the man pages or the vcl language.

Intermediate users should still benefit from a deeper understanding of Varnish routines, default behaviors, and considerations that should be made when running it in front of a dynamic web site.

Cons:
Intermediate users will likely finish this book in under an hour and will be wishing for more.

Awful and outdated

For something that was "published" in 2013, having no mention of Varnish's grace or saint mode settings is somewhat unforgivable, even for an overpriced pamphlet like this. The smattering of examples that are given alternate between being oversimplified and pointlessly convoluted and there is ultimately very little in here that I would ever consider putting into production. I'm not a big fan of the official Varnish documentation, but it's free and it's a lot better than this. Save your money.

No Teasing Here... Great for kiddos!

I enjoy reading my kids books that promote good character traits. Last year I shared Have You Filled a Bucket Today? with my son's teacher and it became a hit in his school. This year his school is focusing on, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids. After hearing about these books from my sons principal, I could hardly wait to get my hands on these books. I was pleasantly surprised after reading this book, Just the Way I AM. It focuses on one of the seven habits, Being Proactive, "You're in Charge."

In this story, The character Pokey the Porcupine is sad because Biff Beaver is making fun of him. At first Pokey feels sad from the teasing and decides not to go to school to avoid the problem. Soon his friends try to convince him that he is fine the way he his. In his own time, Pokey decides that he likes himself the way he is. This new found confidence makes Biff the Beaver back off the teasing.

This is a great book to have on hand for the time your child runs to you and says something like, "Mom, Sally said that my teeth are funny looking!" Pull it out and read it to your child and then discuss the situation and how Pokey handled it. Your child can learn through Pokey's actions. A bonus about the book is the discussion questions in the back of the book that will get you talking with your child. Plus there is a section for the parent to read that offers helpful advice how to deal with the situation of helping your child deal with teasing. It is perfect for parents! I loved the thoughtful questions and suggestions.

Both of my kiddos (age 3 and 7) loved the book and enjoyed the cute illustrations. My oldest could read the book on his own, which is an added bonus. This book is defiantly worth buying and having on hand for the given problem, should it arise.

Good concept in need of a better story.

This is the first in a series of seven kids books from one of the Covey's (seven habits). Habit 1 is "be proactive". I like the concept of the book, because I find value in the "7 habits". The illustrations are well-done. The Parents Corner at the end that helps with discussion is useful to explore a child's feelings and experiences similar to that in the book. However, I did not enjoy the story itself much and think it wrapped up rather weakly. Here, the "be proactive" message is meant for a porcupine that gets picked on because he has quills, like picking on a child with freckles. He learns to cope by not letting his feelings get hurt and decides to show off his quills instead of withdrawing. This is consider proactive because he takes charge of his own feelings. I think for "be proactive" it could have touched on a topic that required actual action, like brushing teeth, cleaning up a room, or similar. How would you relate this to a portly child who is picked on? Should they go the next day in a bikini swimsuit? Okay, bad example. So, in short, good book for discussion, limited entertainment value as a reading book on it's own.

She likes it!

My daughter is 5 years old, which is just about the right age for this book. I read this to her and she immediately asked me to read it to her again, a good sign when I'm evaluating any book.

Pokey Porcupine is sad because Biff Beaver is a bully and makes fun of him for having quills. Pokey's friends gather round to support him with kind words, which make him think and feel better about his quills. He decides not to let Biff ruin his day and ignores Biff's rude comments. More than that, he decides to show off his quills, which all the other little animals loved. When Biff sees that, he wishes HE had quills.

A simple story, but it speaks to children on their level. My daughter understood that Biff was a bully and why Pokey was sad and later happy.

My daughter is in kindergarten and this book is slightly too advanced for her to read. Perhaps more towards the end of the school year, she'll be able to read this without help. I'll say it's about first grade reading level. My son is 8 years old in third grade and he'd consider this book too childish.

The illustrations are wonderful. They remind me of the style of the Arthur books by Marc Brown. I found them pleasing to the eyes and they complemented the story well.

This is not an in-depth book full of answers, but it's a good way to start a conversation with your children about bullying and self-esteem.

Philip P. Brown

Philip P. Brown was introduced to computers at the early age of 10, by a Science teacher at St. Edmund's College, Ware, UK. He was awestruck by the phenomenal power of the ZX81's 3 MHz, Z80 CPU, and 1 K of RAM, showcasing the glory of 64 x 48 monochrome block graphics! The impressionable lad promptly went out and spent his life savings to acquire one of his very own, and then spent many hours keying in small BASIC programs such as "Ark Royal", a game where you land a block pretending to be an aircraft, on a bunch of lower blocks pretending to be an aircraft carrier. Heady stuff!

When birthday money allowed expanding the ZX81 to an unbelievable 16 K of RAM, he also felt the need to acquire a patch cable to allow him to actually save programs to audio cassettes. Once this was deployed to the family cassette recorder, he was not seen or heard from for many months that followed.

Phil's first exposure to Sun Microsystems was at U.C. Berkeley in 1989, as part of standard computer science classwork. Students were expected to do their classwork on diskless Sun 3/50 workstations running SunOS 4.1.1. During this time, he wrote his first serious freeware program, "kdrill", which at one time was part of the official X11 distribution, and remains in some Linux distros to this day. He eventually acquired a Sun workstation for personal use (with a disk and quarter-inch tape drive) and continued his home explorations, eventually transitioning from SunOS to Solaris, around Solaris 2.5.1.

The principles of the original, pre-GPL freeware licenses prevalent in 1989 inspired Phil the most. Led by their example, he has contributed to an assortment of free software projects along the way. A little-known fact is that he is responsible for "MesaGL" morphing into the modern GLX/OpenGL implementation it is known for today. At the time, MesaGL was primarily an OpenGL workalike with a separate, non-X11 API, as author Brian Paul did not believe that it could function in a speed-effective way. In 2003, Phil wrote the first GLX integration proof-of-concept code, which convinced Brian to eventually commit to true GLX extension support.

In 2002, Phil created pkg-get, inspired by Debian's apt-get utility, and started off CSW packaging. This, at last, brought the era of network-installed packages to Solaris. All major public Solaris package repositories prior to Solaris 11 still use pkg-get format catalogs for their software.

In reality, Phil also had an impact on the existence of Solaris itself. In 2002, Sun Microsystems was on the road to canceling Solaris x86 as a product line. The community was outraged, and a vote in the old "solarisonintel" Yahoo! group resulted in six community representatives making the case for x86 to Sun. Phil was one of those six who eventually flew to Sun HQ to meet the head honchos and banish the forces of evil for a while.

Phil's current hobbies include writing (both articles and code), riding motorcycles, reading historical fiction, and keeping his children amused.

Most of his writing until this point has been done online, for free. His website has a particular wealth of Solaris information, and includes a mix of script writing, driver code, and Solaris sysadmin resources.

However, the first time any of his articles got published was in Rainbow magazine (a publication for the Tandy Color Computer) on page 138 of the May 1989 issue, under a column named Tools for Programming BASIC09 (http://ia700809.us.archive.org/26/items/rainbowmagazine-1989-05/The_Rain...).

Very good book

A great book for those who want to learn more about Solaris 11 new features. The book goes straight to the point, showing how the new features make life easier for the system administrator. Although it's not meant for beginners I think that even those who never used the Solaris Operating System will learn something useful.

Good Resource

It doesn't cover any fresh theoretical or analytical ground, but this book provides a good historical summary of the weaponization of sound in the 20th and early 21st centuries. Although scholarly, the writing has energy and mostly avoids humanities-style impenetrability. Careful citations and good footnotes point the interested reader toward more thorough studies. While I haven't read the original French, I don't imagine that much was lost on the way over to English. Pretty good!

Great food for thought

Great food for thought.... Really HITS HOME. Could definitely see the Barney theme "I Love You" being used in conjunction with Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" as part of some guilt driven psy-war campaign. Call NSA, dgaf.

On my short list of good books on marriage

In Defending Traditional Marriage, Dr. Willard Harley, Jr. has declared war on those factors that end marriages or relegate them to misery. Using guidelines from marriage vows themselves, Dr. Harley shows the extraordinary care that married couples expect when they marry. He explains how to rebuild that level of care, the obstacles to it, and ways to avoid infidelity and divorce. He confronts legislative and social enemies that have decayed marriage, and ends with the dangers of legislating homosexual marriage.

As a man in love with one woman for over forty years and as a behavioral psychologist with thirty years of practice in marriage counseling, Harley passionately defends marriage. He eschews the popular ideas that marriage should not meet the emotional needs of the spouses, that marriages in trouble are not worth saving, that couples should live independently while living in a marriage, or that children can do just fine in divorced families. However, he also decries abuse in marriage, and urges spouses in abusive situations to leave if the abuser will not change.

He divides the book into four sections: Extraordinary Care, Romantic Exclusivity, Permanence, and One Man, One Woman. From a practical level, he makes a lot of sense. In the extraordinary care section he shows that a couple's meeting of four emotional needs usually saves a marriage: sexual fulfillment, recreational companionship, affection, and intimate conversation. He lists others but in his view, these are the biggies. He encourages couples to try to meet each other's emotional needs and to try to avoid love busters like selfish demands, disrespectful judgments, angry outbursts, dishonesty, annoying habits, and independent behavior. His ideas are both workable and sensible in most cases.

Harley doesn't deal overtly with spiritual ramifications or reasoning, although the underlying philosophy is there. He doesn't quote Scripture. Most readers could feel comfortable giving the book to non-Christian friends who would reject overtly Christian books.

Defending Traditional Marriage is well written and engaging. Harley keeps the reader turning pages with strong reasoning, readable discussion, and occasional anecdotes.
