Q&A with Dorie Clark, author of Reinventing You

What sparked your interest in professional reinvention? 
My interest in reinvention started because I've changed careers a number of times. I went to graduate school for theology, and then became a journalist, a presidential campaign spokesperson, a nonprofit executive director, and finally a marketing strategy consultant. I realized each time, you need to explain that transition in a way that makes sense to other people and demonstrates that you'll be able to do the job successfully. This book is a way to share what I've learned through my own experience, and through advising many talented professionals about rebranding themselves.

Why would people need to reinvent themselves professionally? 
There are a lot of reasons. These days, you can't count on a lifetime job with one company - or, in many cases, even a lifetime career. Too many industries are going through convulsive changes. The people who could benefit most from this book would be individuals looking to change their careers, people who want to move up in their company and know they need to shape how they're viewed by others, and folks who may have been laid off or are looking for a new job in their industry. I also think that younger job-seekers, who are at an earlier stage in personal brand-building, might find this helpful as they're starting out. 

What if I'm not really comfortable with the idea of 'personal branding'?
Some people are turned off by the implication that people can be 'branded' the way cereal or detergent is. They may feel branding equates to phoniness or inauthenticity. But that's exactly the opposite of how I view it. Personal branding isn't about packaging something in a fake way that results in a sale (or a job offer). Your reputation lasts for a long time, and needs to be treated with respect. You won't get very far if you try to be something you're not. Rather, your personal brand is about figuring out who you really are and what you do best, and then living that brand out. It's the essence of authenticity. 

You argue that it's essential for people to understand the unique talent or perspective they can bring. Why is that important? 
I like to say that you'll never win if you're playing someone else's game. When you're transitioning into a new company, new job, or new career, you may be judged by other people's standards. Your colleagues may have 20 years of experience, while you have three months. You're going to lose unless you find a way to show you have unique skills and expertise (perhaps because of your previous professional background) that they simply don't have - and explain why that's a valuable contribution. 

About the Author
Dorie Clark is a marketing strategy consultant and frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review and Forbes. Recognized as a branding expert by the Associated Press, Clark has worked with a diverse range of clients, including Google, the Ford Foundation, Yale University, the Mount Sinai Medical Center, and the National Park Service.

A former presidential campaign spokeswoman, Clark is Adjunct Professor of Business Administration at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. She has taught marketing and communications at Tufts University, Suffolk University, Emerson College, and Smith College Executive Education and has guest lectured at universities including Harvard, Georgetown, and the University of Michigan. She is quoted frequently in the international media, including NPR, the BBC, and U.S. News & World Report. She is also a columnist for Mint, India's second-largest business newspaper.

Best book I've ever read on this topic.

This is a great book for everyone who realizes that the days of lifelong employment are long gone and for those who are interested in taking control of their career, in order to get a promotion, get a new job or to even switch career paths.

What I like is that this book isn't just focused on "personal branding." It's NOT about your personal elevator pitch, or working the room at the local business card exchange. Instead, the author provides a series of exercises to help you to understand things like:
- Your objectives
- Your competitive advantage
- Crafting your narrative
- Ways to demonstrate your value

Lots of fun reinvention stories, too, from everyday people and famous people alike.

Good, but not so applicable for normal people

It is a good book, but it seems to have been written for already successful people that are wanting to change career. The author presumes you already have a network of influent people, and that everybody is wanting to help you to get to your new objective. Besides that, you should meet your friends and ask them what are your own weaknesses. I don't know about you, but I have not such friends (at work), coleagues or boss who I can ask such a question.

Not for newbies

I have no doubt that this book carries a lot of interesting and helpful tips for some persons. However, I'm not sure that I would want to bring along my boss, colleagues and friends on my rebranding journey. At least not yet. What if persons looking to rebrand themselves wish to do so under the radar? What if your company's culture is not one that you could trust or rely on persons to constructively advise you without making you think that you are stupid for embarking on such an endeavor? And even if it is a great working culture, is it a crime to want to keep it private until a certain point? It would have been great to hear tips and recommendations relative to these questions because this book seems to cater to high level executives and not me, a woman in her thirties looking to reinvent herself from scratch and trying to decipher what her brand really is. I admire the author's work and I dream someday to be as sure footed and confident as her. In the meantime I will seek other books that can give me more basic insight relative to my needs but I will keep this book close for when it's ready for me. I would still recommend persons I know to read it.

Great Read!

I had read "Olive's Ocean" by Henkes in the past and was blown away (and I am a male in my 30s!). So it was an easy decision to read "Bird Lake Moon" when it came out. And I was not disappointed at all. Henkes' attention to detail (without long descriptions that get you off track), along with very real and natural responses from the characters, brings the story to life. And I am not saying that just to say that he does it well. Rather, reading this book is more like an experience than simply witnessing a story, and thus that realism and corresponding empathy engages the reader.

A Teacher's Perspective

This piece of Contemporary Realistic Fiction contains several deep themes including death, the development of moral character, sibling relationships, and friendship. The story would be a classic person vs. self conflict, but also contains a bit of person vs. society because of Mitch's current family situation.

I could relate to Mitch's inner struggles as he attempted to right his own wrongs to save his friendship. I think everyone has experienced the remorse that follows bad choices and the inner tug-of-war that follows. We've all asked ourselves, "How do I make this right?" I also thought the contrast between the two families' dynamics was intensely interesting and thought provoking. The differences in the personalities of the two main characters could often be traced back to their prior family experiences.

This book would be perfect for literature circles in the classroom. Small groups of students would benefit from discussing Mitch's struggle to develop moral character and the implications of his impulsive decision making. In addition, I woud keep this book handy for students encountering divorce and encourage them to think about how Mitch grows and develops through his family's changes.

Bird Lake Moon

My knowledge of Kevin Henkes, the author, never extended outside of his picture books (and what picture books they are!). I thoroughly enjoyed his fun titles like Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, Owen, and Chrysanthemum and for the longest time, I thought this was all there was to Kevin Henkes. I hate to admit it, but it wasn't until recently that I realized his novel Olive's Ocean was a Newbery Honor Book. I didn't even know he wrote novels (he's written 8)! So when I saw that the Wisconsin native's latest novel, Bird Lake Moon, was being generously reviewed as everything from a ghost story, to an edge-of-your-seat page turner, to a suspenseful summer adventure yarn, I couldn't get my hands on a copy fast enough.

The last thing Mitch Sinclair wanted to do this summer was stay with his grandparents at Bird Lake. If Mitch had it his way, his parents would NOT be getting a divorce and his family of three would be working out their problems together at home in Madison. Spencer Stone wanted nothing more than to come to his family's cabin on Bird Lake, but ever since his 4 year old brother drowned in the lake years ago, the getaway has lost its appeal. This summer however, Spencer is getting his wish as his family looks to return to Bird Lake and put their past behind them.

I should tell you up front, I have A LOT to say about this book and that this review will be very long. If you'd rather discover some of the plot particulars on your own, you might not want to read on. Some people would maybe think I give away too many SPOILERS. But if you too, are wanting to read this book, and are expecting some of the very same things I expected (a ghost story, a mystery, adventure), please read on, because you'll find that nothing I discuss is truly worthy of a SPOILER WARNING. The thing is, there is no mystery or suspense or summer adventure in this story and what really upset me upon reading it, despite the expectations I set, is that there very easily could have been.

I suppose I can maybe see where the "ghost story" comparisons come in. The only satisfaction Mitch gets out of Bird Lake is the uninhabited house that sits next to his grandparents'. When Spencer's family shows up, occupies the house, and ruins Mitch's own private hiding place, he feels that he can scare them away by making it look as if a ghost is haunting the house, unaware of the fact that the Stone's lost a family member in the lake years ago. This may sound a bit demented on my part, but that could serve as one heck of a premise, especially with the alternating point of view chapter style that Henkes uses here. I was excited about where this could go, but instead, it goes nowhere. In fact, Mitch confesses this and the cat is let out of the bag early on.

I guess once the story got going, I found myself somewhat intrigued by one small mystery. What happened to young Matty Stone, Spencer's dead brother? How did he die and why is Spencer's mother still having a hard time dealing with his death many years later? I'm not saying that moving on from such an event is an easy thing to do. A tragic loss such as this, probably stays with some people forever. But Spencer's mom just acts so darn peculiar in the book, that something HAS to be up. It's as if she's hiding something from us, and the rest of the family. Do we ever find out about Matt Stone's death? Nope. To lead us to believe that there may be more to the story, only to leave us hanging, is maddening to me, high expectations or not. This coming from an author who has not just a Newbery Honor, but a Caldecott Medal attached to his name.

So my last hope was in the `adventure' department. It was inevitable that these two troubled boys were going to meet, connect with each other, and have one good `ole rip-roaring summer. Wrong. In fact, nearly 70% of the book goes by before their paths even cross. And when they finally do meet, Henkes wants the reader to feel their friendship, but really gives us nothing. The boys play in the lake together. Once. That's all we get.

No ghost story, no mystery, no adventure. Just two boys facing grown-up problems and handling them on their own. Don't get me wrong, Henkes' writing is pretty strong in some of these moments, particularly Mitch's struggle coming to terms with his parents' eminent divorce and his father's infidelity. I think many children will be able to easily connect with Mitch and will have shared many of his same thoughts. The alternating chapter style, bouncing back and forth between each boys' point of view, was unique but since I didn't find Spencer to be all that interesting, his half of the book really disrupted the flow of this story.

In the end, I just couldn't get over my expectations, couldn't get over what this book could have been. I realize that I set those expectations and that if you come in with none, maybe you'll discover a nice little story about the effects of divorce on children. As for me, I hope the next time I read a Kevin Henkes book, that it stars Lilly and her purple, plastic purse.

The Mystical Arm of Islam -- A Novice's Impressions

Just started reading this book. I want to learn more about Sufism since it is a theme echoed over a over by Gibran, Pamuk and of course its founder the great poet Rumi. I love the concept of becoming "One with the Beloved". In my opinion Pamuk corrupts Sufism and Mystics. Orhan Pamuk's books present a distorted view of Dervishes and Sufis, especially the novel, My Name is Red. He reduces these holy men to their baser instincts.

Of course as a Christian my ultimate Spiritual Goal is to become one with Jesus Christ.

Over the years as I think back I believe I have found elements of Sufism in the writings of Deepak Chopra, the Dalai Lama and I'm sure that as I read more of Dr. Edward Said I will find it there also. Perhaps it is also in Buddhism, I must look at my Buddhist scriptures.

The theme of Being One with the Beloved resonates with me as a Christian because you find this concept in the Bible. Jesus spoke that He and the Father were One. The Epistles constantly speak about being reunited with God, being more like the Father, losing yourself in Him.

I'm the type of Christian who believes one can incorporate the best of other faiths without losing or rejecting one's own belief system. As I get older I lean towards to the Gospel of Inclusion. Besides on Judgement Day we will all answer to God no matter what our faith or belief.

The aphorisms in this book remind me very much of the Book of Proverbs in the Bible. Proverbs is known as the book of Wisdom. I keep refering to the Bible because this is my faith and my frame of reference. As I read about the Sufis and Dervishes I think about Jesus disciples and how he sent them out to preach the gospel and heal the sick. Jesus told them to take nothing with them except the clothes on their back. I believe the scripture states that the workman is worthy of his hire. The went from town to town, house to house spreading the Good News. Whoever had ears to hear received it, those who did not Jesus told them to shake the dust off their sandals as they left that particular village. I am just speculating but maybe Rumi and other Sufis were inspired by Jesus, his disciples and the apostles.

Another similarity I found was the mention of the Redemptive Names of God. Christians also have this.

Just wanted to add that some of themed echo the Song of Solomon which contrasts romantic love between Solomon and his Ethiopian wife to his Love and search for God. Also in regards to mystics whether Sufi or Christian, "One cannot be so Heavenly bound that you are no earthly good". Props to my former Pastor, Rev. A.R. Bernard!!

The Mystic experience can also be found heavily in the Catholic Church. There are many famous Catholic Mystics; St. Teresa of Avila, Hildegard of Bingen, Francis of Assisi, Julian of Norwich, Catherine of Siena, etc... Many Catholic Mystics have had the experience of Stigmata, actually having the wounds of Christ on their physical bodies. Some have actually a type of ecstasy something similar to an out of body experience, perhaps a suspension of natural time where one is present with the Lord.

In my brief study of Eastern and Western Mysticism the Path Chooses the Believer not the Believer the Path. I think ones personality also lends itself to a mystical experience

One of the most important books I've read

For non-Muslims, this book is essential to understanding a very important aspect of Islam that people don't see, either due to ignorance or because of bias. It deals with universal morals, ideals and ethics (ranging from love of humanity, to patience, to gratitude) that are central to tassawwuf (what is known in the west as Sufism). Sufism/tassawuf is actually considered (traditionally) to be an Islamic science dealing with the purity of an individuals heart in relating with God and creation. To those who thought Islam is some sort of evil, alien force, this book will prove how ignorant they are.
Specifically, I'm recommending this book for Muslims, as it holds a wealth of knowledge going back to the words of the Prophet (PBUH), to modern scholars. The words of all the women and men in this book are PRICELESS, and should be read as they are beautiful expressions of of our pan-Islamic heritage.
Yet for anyone in seeking to own an open heart, this is the book for you.

About the Author
Gary Lachman was born in Bayonne, New Jersey, and has lived in London since 1996. He is a full-time writer with more than a dozen books to his name on topics ranging from the evolution of consciousness and the Western esoteric tradition to literature and suicide and the history of popular culture. Lachman writes frequently for journals in the US and UK and lectures on his work in the internationally. His work has been translated into several languages. Liminal Lives At The Doors Of Perception

Gary Lachman's generally excellent 'A Dark Muse: A History of the Occult' (2003) isn't an actual "history of the occult," as its title claims. Rather, the book is a collection of short essays on both famous and relatively obscure individuals, beginning in 1688 with Emanuel Swedenborg, whose lives were dominated by the metaphysical and the paranormal in some significant manner. Lachman, who excels at contextualizing the broad traditions of Occidental occultism, clearly has a both a great enthusiasm and a sober respect for his subject. The author's insights are often fascinatingly original, such as his belief that [...] is a modern example of "sehnsucht," which Lachman partially translates as "something infinitely desirable just beyond our grasp...horn calls far off in the dark forest, the poignant glow of sunset, which we will never reach, no matter how quickly we race to the horizon, the snow-capped peaks of a distant mountain range."

After the initial chapter on Enlightenment Occultism, which includes Mesmer, Cagliostro, Le Comte de Saint Germain, and Jan Potocki in addition to Swedenborg and others, Lachman hits his stride with penetrating essays on E. T. A. Hoffman, Edger Allen Poe, Charles Baudelaire, and August Strindberg that shed telling light on areas of these writer's lives usually overlooked or ignored by academia.

'A Dark Muse,' which cautiously explores the questionable relationship between 'genius and madness,' also underscores the additional tragedy and suffering that comes to many of those who immerse themselves in the occult, or whose lives are immersed by it.

Depression, nervous collapse, extreme self-consciousness and sensitivity, hallucinations, temporary or permanent insanity, incarceration in mental institutions, syphilis, cancer, and other diseases, poverty, starvation, alcoholism, drug addiction, alienation from friends and family, social ostracism, and suicide or suicide attempts were common elements in the lives of many of those included here, all of whom, with the exception of Madame Blavatsky, are male.

In addition to severe forms of human suffering, early death was also a factor: Novalis died at 28, Rene Daumal at 36, Arthur Rimbaud at 37, Poe at 40, Guy De Maupassant at 42, Gerard de Nerval and Baudelaire at 46, Fernando Pessoa at 47, Malcolm Lowry at 48, and Villiers de l'Isle-Adam at 51. Very few lived long, happy, or successful lives, though Goethe, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Lord Dunsany, H. G. Wells, and Algernon Blackwood, each of whom had problems of their own, were exceptions to the general rule.

Lachman's writing is often persuasive and certainly penetrating. Having quoted De Maupassant's "...I have a softening of the brain...the result of washing out my nasal passages with salt water. A saline fermentation has taken place in my brain, and every night my brain runs out through my nose and mouth in a sticky paste. This is imminent death and I am mad...", Lachman adds, "Remembering the fate of his insane brother, Maupassant tried to kill himself, but botched the job and was saved by his servant. He was driven to s sanatorium in Paris in a straightjacket, and nineteen months later he died, raving, a month short of his forty-third birthday."

Lachman explains why he has chosen those figures who populate "The Modernist Occultist," though it's unfortunate he did not include Hilda Doolittle (1866-1961), since Doolittle not only experienced, wrote about, and avidly studied the occult, but also had a background in Count von Zinzendorf's Moravian Brotherhood, and, in keeping with the potential consequences of occult interaction, suffered several bouts of severe mental instability during her lifetime. It's also difficult to excuse the absence of C. G. Jung, though Lachman presumably left Jung out due to the sheer abundance of material available about him elsewhere. However, Jung fits Lachman's criteria exactly, and of course has had a profound influence on metaphysical thinking and theory.

'A Dark Muse,' which sadly lacks an index, concludes with a brief selection of excepts from the work of Swedenborg, Karl Von Eckarthausen, Madame Blavatsky, Strindberg, P.D. Ouspensky, Poe, Eliphas Levi, and others.

A Nightside Literary Romp

Mr. Lachman continues to delight and amaze me with a prodigious mind for western esotericism and a disarming writing style so much like his mentor, Colin Wilson, in that one feels he is there with you discussing these fascinating topics. This is a work that explores the literary history of western occultism and the terminal documents that make up that intellectual history. This work stands in the effort to place before the public the historical reality that the esoteric has been a foundation stone upon which many cultural endeavors have been focused upon, but remain "outside" and unrecognized by many academics and scholars.
The chapter on the pre- revolution Russian occult literary scene is excellent and you will find yourself jotting down titles & authors to further explore. Mr. Lachman's work is the first I can recall that provides a brief but welcome overview of the life of Gustav Meyrink. Meyrink, remains sadly neglected by the English speaking esoteric world. Again, I appreciate Lachman's effort to demonstrate that Swedenborg is the progenitor of much of the western esoteric world view. It is not without noting that D.T. Suzuki called Swedenborg, "the Buddha of the North".
Highly recommended, this is one Muse that will continue to inspire, enlighten, and provoke even after repeated readings.

A Fascinating History of the Occult.

_A Dark Muse: A History of the Occult_, published by Thunder's Mouth Press, by musician and author Gary Lachman is a fascinating history of the central figures who make up the occult movement beginning from the time of the Enlightenment to the modern day. The book especially focuses on artists, poets, and writers who played a significant part in the development of occult ideas or who were otherwise influenced by the occult and occult notions. However, the book also features figures who could be described as belonging to the occult proper. Gary Lachman was a musician who is perhaps best known as one of the founders of the group Blondie. More recently, Lachman has written extensively on occult and esoteric topics, including Ouspensky, consciousness, and the Sixties from a mystical perspective - the fruit of years of occult research. In many respects, Lachman's writings are similar to those of Colin Wilson, who wrote extensively on existentialism and the occult from an anti-materialist perspective.

In the introduction to this book, Lachman begins by defining the occult as meaning "hidden, secret, esoteric, and unknown". He notes that in the popular mind the occult is frequently associated with such strange things as Satanism, witchcraft, tabloid horoscopes, and UFOs. While it is true that these can all be considered as part of the occult, the occult itself is more elusive. Lachman also relates the occult to various ancient beliefs, mystery cults, the Kabbalah, and the Gnostic heresy. In terms of Satanism, Lachman provides evidence of ritual murder in an event which occurred in England. Lachman also notes how the occult has arisen largely in opposition to various aspects of the Enlightenment, including an excessive emphasis on "Reason", a fundamentalist form of materialism, and the idolatry of science in "scientism". Lachman emphasizes that the occult is today understood largely as "rejected knowledge".

Following this, Lachman turns to the role of the occult during the Enlightenment period. He begins by noting the paradox of defining this period as "The Occult Enlightenment", but maintains the prelevance of occult ideas throughout the Enlightenment. Many of these ideas and movements grew in opposition to both the churches and orthodoxy as well as the kind of rationalist materialism found in other Enlightenment thinkers. Lachman then turns to the occultists themselves. He devotes separate sections to the following individuals: Emanuel Swedenborg (the Swedish seer who maintained that he could communicate with the dead and the angels), Mesmer (a Viennese doctor who devised a theory of "mesmerism" and "animal magnetism" and was influential in the discovery on the unconscious), Cagliostro (an Italian Rasputin who was involved in Masonic movements and largely considered to be a political subversive and revolutionary), Le Comte de Saint-Germain (a mysterious figure who recurs in the history of freemasonry, believed to have lived for centuries, though regarded by his enemies as a huckster), Louis Claude de Saint-Martin ("The Unknown Philosopher"; an influential mystic involved in freemason and Christian mysticism, influenced heavily by the mysticism of Jacob Boehme ("The Teutonic Theosopher") and the Kabbalah), Karl von Eckharthausen (a fellow mystic influenced by Saint-Martin, perhaps most famous for writing _The Cloud Upon the Sanctuary_ in which he maintained the reality of a "hidden church", an idea which influenced both Madame Blavatsky and Crowley), William Beckford (an occultist and writer of the _Vathek_ novels), Jacques Cazotte (a famed occultist influenced by Saint-Martin), Jan Potocki (a Polish occultist and writer of _The Sargasso Manuscript_), The Illuminati (the dreaded Masonic organization bent on overturning throne and altar and believed to still be operating behind the scenes), and William Blake (the famed poet influenced heavily by Swedenborg).

The Enlightenment was followed by the Romantic period, in which Enlightenment belief in the rights of the individual was succeeded by individuality itself. Many Romantics were appalled by the excesses of the French Revolution and thus embraced a reactionary quietism with a frequent hankering for nature and a nostalgia for the medieval. Lachman discusses the following figures who represented the occult during the Romantic period: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (the beloved German writer who wrote on suicide and the Faust legend with an interest in Rosicrucianism), Novalis (the pen-name of German Romantic who praised Europe and Christendom and had an infatuation with a young girl), E. T. A. Hoffmann (a German Romantic who wrote ghost stories and weird tales), Edgar Allan Poe (the famous poet, an alcoholic who sought to understand the unconscious, a writer of ghost stories, and an occultist), Honore de Balzac (the famous writer, an agnostic influenced by the occult, Mesmer, and Swedenborg), Gerard de Nerval (an eccentric Bohemian who among other things walked a lobster down the street tied to a ribbon; an extremely mentally unstable individual who was heavily influenced by the occult), Edward Bulwer-Lytton (the Victorian novelist, most famous for his writings on Pompei, ghosts, Rosicrucianism, and as creator of the "Vril"), Eliphas Levi (the famous occultist, writer on magic, socialism, and the French Revolution who praised Catholicism and the Kabbalah), Charles Baudelaire (the blasphemous Satanic poet who was later to convert to Catholicism), Villiers de l'Isle Adam (the Symbolist writer and aristocrat, most famous for his writing _Axel_, heavily influenced by Catholicism, and who led an otherwise miserable life).

Lachman next turns his attention to Satanic occultism, noting the role of Satan in comparative religion, Gnosticism, and the "Black Mass", as well as the role of various instances of poisonings and murders. Lachman describes the Satanic occult activities of the following individuals: Charles Baudelaire (the poet again, a strong believer in the reality of Satan who dabbled in Satanism for a time but eventually converted to Catholicism), Arthur Rimbaud (a disturbed poet who dabbled in homosexuality with Paul Verlaine and frequently wrote of the Devil), J. K. Huysmans (an occultist writer perhaps best known for his description of the "Black Mass" in his novel _La-Bas_, supposedly based on fact), and Valery Briusov (a Russian decadent who dabbled in Satanism).

Following this, Lachman turns his attention to "fin de siecle occultism", noting the influence of Nietzschean ideas, Bergsonianism and "creative evolution", William James, Proust, and Theosophy and the Order of the Golden Dawn. Lachman mentions the following figures who played some role in the fin de siecle occult: Madame Blavatsky (the Russian medium and occultist, as well as the founder of the Theosophical Society), Villiers de l'Isle Adam (again), H. G. Wells (the famous writer and one of the fathers of science fiction as well as an ardent socialist), Algernon Blackwood (the writer of weird tales), Lord Dunsany (the famous writer of weird tales, Nietzschean, and ardent aristocrat), R. M. Bucke (the alienist who developed the idea of the "cosmic consciousness" and an influence on James and Ouspensky), P. D. Ouspensky (the Russian mathematician, occultist, and philosopher known for his researches into the "fourth dimension" and as a promoter of Gurdjieff), Aleister Crowley ("the Great Beast 666", a drug addled madman who dabbled in Satanism and magic), Arthur Machen (writer of the weird tale, perhaps most famous for his novel _The Great God Pan_), Guy de Maupassant (writer of horror stories who became obsessed with his "doppelganger"), August Strindberg (the schizophrenic Swedish playwright who was also influenced by the occult), Gustav Meyrink (the Jewish occultist influenced by the Kabbalah and the legend of the golem), and Andrei Bely (the pen name of a Russian writer influenced by the Anthroposophy of Steiner, Orthodox Christianity, and the Sophiology of Solovyov).

In his last section, Lachman discusses the occult in the modern era making note of the role of the Symbolist movement, James Joyce, and such poets as Pound and Eliot. Lachman discusses the following individuals: Fernando Pessoa (the Portugese modernist poet who developed an interest in the occult and Rosicrucianism), Rene Daumal (the French poet who combined the thoughts of Rene Guenon, pataphysics, and occultism), O. V. de L. Milosz (uncle of the Noble Prize winning poet Czeslaw Milosz and ardent occultist, influenced by Rosicrucianism and the Book of Revelation), and Malcolm Lowry (the novelist most famous for his novel _Under the Volcano_ and influenced by the occult).

The book ends with a selection of texts from various occultists presented in this book.

This book offers a fascinating picture of some of the individuals who played an important role in the development of the occult from the time of the Enlightenment to the modern era. Such occultists offered alternatives to the reigning paradigms in religion and science at the time, as well as challenged the stale materialism which largely reigns in our world today. About the Author
Paul Fleischman grew up in Santa Monica, California in a house with a printing press, a grand piano, a shortwave radio, and his father—children’s author Sid Fleischman. Playing recorder in early music consorts led to his books of verbal duets—I Am Phoenix, Joyful Noise (winner of the 1989 Newbery Medal), and Big Talk. His novels built from monologues include Bull Run, a 16-character account of the Civil War's first battle, and Seedfolks—the chronicle of the first year of a Cleveland community garden. His interest in theater inspired his young adult novels Mind's Eye, Seek, and Breakout, all of which revolve around the spoken word. His historical fiction includes Saturnalia and The Borning Room. He's written nonfiction and picture books as well, including Time Train, Weslandia, and Sidewalk Circus.

Alongside the Newbery Medal, he's won a Newbery Honor Book, the Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction, the PEN West Literary Award, the California Young Reader Medal, and most recently was a finalist for the 2003 National Book Award. He makes his home in the village of Aromas, California.

This book is a wonderful fiction story about a boy named Aaron and his first adventure alone. Aaron was born unable to speak, and his father got lost at sea. The day before Aaron's birthday, his mom left him alone for the first time. The next day a bad snowstorm arrived. The day Aaron's mom was suppose to come home, she didn't, so Aaron went out looking for her. He got lost in the woods alone. He met a ragman and got a ride to a city called Williford. Then he went to the Half-A-Moon Inn and met a lady named Miss Grackle. Miss Grackle forced Aaron to make to the fires and tend to the visitors. She took his shoes and put them in soup for the visitors. He also got all his belongings taken away. The visitors were telling the story of King Tom. He was a robber that killed people and then took all their money and belongings. Miss Grackle was a pickpocket, just like King Tom. Aaron tried to get away, but he got caught, and she whipped his feet until they were swelled and red. His mom stopped by looking for him, and Miss Grackle said she had not seen him. Aaron got really mad, and he wondered if his mom would ever come back there looking for him. Miss Grackle made soup for the visitors that allowed her to look at their dreams. The ragman stopped by and stayed a night. In the morning Aaron and Miss Grackle caught King Tom in the inn's cellar. While Miss Grackle was making fun of King Tom, Aaron slipped outside, jumped into the ragman's wagon, and off he went. The ragman never did realize that Aaron couldn't speak. After a while the ragman noticed he didn't have his money, so him and Aaron drove back to the inn. When they got to the inn his mom was there and Miss Grackle gave him all of his belongings back. His mom gave him new boots for his birthday, and Aaron and his mom hugged and hugged.
I think this book is very interesting and good, because of its adventure. I liked it when Aaron first walked into the Half-A-Moon Inn, because that's when some of the adventure started. I also liked when he went searching for his mother. I thought that was very brave of him, since it was his first time alone. The last reason I liked the book is, because of the exciting end of the book. I think Miss Grackle is a mean old stupid robber that should be in jail. I would recommend this book to a person that likes adventure books, or any young reader. Almost the whole book is about adventure, and I've never read a book like that. This book is a wonderful fiction story of adventure.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense, reason being is that the book leaves you wondering whats going to happen in the next chapter. Let me give you a little bit of background information. This book the Half a Moon Inn fits its name but not till like the fifth chapter. The characters are Aaron, Aarons mother Mrs.Grackel and the ragman. Mrs. Grackel is the manager and owner of the Half A Moon Inn. Aaron is a average 11 year old boy except for one thing, he is mute. The ragman, well you will just hear about him later. Anyway Aaron is eleven and his mother is going to Craftsbury to get him a new pair of boots for his birthday. Then a bad snow storm kicked up, so Aarons mother got stuck in the snow. So Aaron gets worried and goes and looks for his mom. On the lookout Aaron ran into a ragman. The ragman then takes him to The Half A Moon Inn. Where Mrs. Grackel lives. She asked Aaron if he could start a fire because she can not because she says only truthful people could start a fire. So then Mrs. Grackel makes him stay there and start all of the fires. What will happen when Aaron can not start a fire. Read The Half A Moon Inn to find out. I think this book deserves all five stars, because it is a really great book.

MAGIC AND VILLAINY IN NEW ENGLAND

Twelve-year-old Aaron is mute and lives with his widowed mother near a coastal village. Lost or delayed in a snowstorm she fails to return home, so the brave son decides to seek her in the frosty, robber-infested forests. His wandering takes him to a decrepit, inn where the vicious landlady takes him prisoner (by hiding his boots) and then makes him her slave. Nor can he say a word in his defense, even when falsely accused of being a Fingersmith (what a quaint expression)!
The cruel proprietress proves to be even worse than a thief and a kidnapper, for she dabbles in evil magic to ferret out the secrets of her sleeping guests. And now she forces young Aaron to help her by reading their dreams for her personal gain.
The hero never speaks, though his hearing is fine, so his handicap decreases his likelihood of escaping and finding his mother. This is a fast read; kids will enjoy the obstacles to Aaron's happiness and rescue. They are sure to be intrigued by the element of magic in this tale. I like the clever way that the author dispenses Justice to the crooks without overt violence. Just be sure that YOU don't spend the night at the Half-a-Moon Inn!

Awesome resource and instruction

I have to say, most of my knowledge of Nagios comes solely from surfing the internet, trial and error, and Google. I wish I had this book over a year and a half ago when I first started learning about this software. The topics are extremely easy to follow and start from the very basics to advanced topics including redundant servers and monitoring Nagios own performance. The illustrations that accompany the text are very easy to follow and understand and help, rather than hinder, the information. I really like the way the book is laid in terms of chapters and sections - new information is presented, explained, and detailed, but then there's a section called "There's more..." which delves deeper into the specific topic. In all, for sys admins and others who wish they could monitor their networks in real-time and be more proactive, this book is an invaluable source and constant companion. This book is really well written and walks you through all aspects of Nagios from getting started to advanced topics such as configuring a redundant server. I have been using Nagios for many years and was surprised that I was able to expand my knowledge and develop a better understanding of topics I had previously struggled with. The author also does a great job explaining difficult concepts in a simple way that make it easy to understand. The format is a little odd, each of the topics are written as recipes of a cookbook of Nagios mastery. However, this actually seems to be a good way to dissect Nagios into small parts that are able to be easily understood. Each recipe also gives back and forward references to materials you might want to look at first as a prerequisite or afterwards to expand the concept. There are also lots of references to external content if you wish to learn more about specific topics that are covered briefly in the book. I recommend this book to anyone looking to get started with Nagios or to people who wish to expand their Nagios knowledge.

Excellent Nagios cookbook

I've involved in a cloud development project. I use Nagios core for monitoring servers and devices in this project. As we know, Nagios is one of famous open sourced monitoring tools. I needed references in dealing with Nagios. While I was reading this, it remind me of basic concept of Nagios again.

There are some sections in every chapter. "How to do it" , "How it works" and "There's more". it describes how we start a certain feature of Nagios according to the section in "How to do it" and then explains its mechanism with easy way in "How it works" and finally there is additional contents related to the chapter in "There's more"

There is impressive paragraph in the book that nagios is close to MONITORING FRAMWORK rather than monitoring tool. It is perfect that describes nagios characteristic because it has already provide ecosystem, for example, lots of plugins support . And it is important to know where to find if need specific plugin that doesn't meet requirements. Author instructed that how to find a plugin that the administrator needs and where.

People who are unfamiliar with Nagios, in my opinion, they may be confused that Nagios has SOFT and HARD state in response to server or host failing. In chapter 3, author tries to explain the difference between two by giving an understandable example.

At last, in chapter 11, he gives an explanation about add-on projects like NRPE, NSClient++, NDOUtils and SNMP trap. If you need to extend the feature of Nagios to provide better-fitting solution on you own production, this will very helpful to you.
