The Rosetta Stone of Relationships

I have spent many years reading books, talking to counselors, and talking to friends about relationships. Reading Johnson's book was a real eye opener, to put it very mildly. I have enjoyed the author's style in his other books where he presents a myth and discusses it's psychological meaning. This book is no exception, except that it's relevance is way off the charts. Before reading "We" I had all but thrown my hands in the air in frustration regarding relationships. The author's beautiful style drills deep and answers the many questions I had. Johnson's use of the Tristan myth told me what I did not want to hear, but the pain I have experience in relationship told me that Johnson was right on the money. The author's analysis of romantic love and the distinction he makes between passion and true love (which is more low key and may even come across as boring sometimes) spoke loud and clear. He made me realize that I have been searching out there in vain for so many years for lady soul, because lady soul lurked within my unconscious mind. Since reading this book I was able to connect with lady soul and have that symbolic marriage that Johnson talks about.
I highly recommend this book to each person who has a lot of questions about why relationships in our cultures are in a state of epidepic crisis. The author's answers may not be what you want to hear if you are a "zealous" romantic. If you are willing to stretch yourself and change, then Johnson's words are an excellent catalyst for changing your ways and heading in the right direction.
I consider "We" among the most relevant books by Robert Johnson, and among the most relevantt books by any author!

Soon to be a Classic, If Not Already

"We" completely opens your mind to the difference between romantic and human love, something many people perhaps never thought were different. I couldn't put this book down while I read it and I have been recommending it to friends since finishing it. For those searching for happiness with another, "We" is helpful because it is accessible, powerful, and enlightening.

Since reading We, my husband and I have worked to ground our marriage with what Johnson calls: "stirring the oatmeal"... an expression I love! By removing our projections of the perfect partner and consciously appreciating the other's flaws, we remember that authentic love is humble and long lasting, like oatmeal. It's so much better than the instant gratification of cereal and milk, which leaves you hungry way before lunch! But really, there is so much Johnson helps you see about our culture that makes it so hard to love! He claims that romantic love is an "unholy muddle of two holy loves" and says that "by some trick of psychological evolution our culture has muddled the two loves in a potion of romantic love and has nearly lost them both."

Johnson has a trademark writing style, which can also be found in his books titled He and She. In We, he uses the ancient, mythological narrative of two lovers, Tristan and Iseult, to explore the origins of romantic love and what it is, how it has infiltrated our Western psyche and affects our relationships with ourselves and others, and what we should do about it. The author is also a renowned Jungian analyst, which is incorporated into his examination of the subconscious and how relationships deteriorate into egotism.

I really liked We, and I hope you will too. The only issues I had was that it focused on the male psychology a bit more than female in the relationship. For more reading on this subject, I would recommend: Ehrich Neumann's Amor and Psyche, which is a classic examination of the role love plays in female psychology and Impossible Love: Or Why the Heart Must Go Wrong by Jan Bauer.

A needed look at why love fails in the West

Having succumbed too many times to the call of romantic love (and later paid the price for believing it was authentic love)I found this book to be very helpful in understanding what was happening to me (or should I say what I was doing to myself.) The beauty of Johnson's view is that all the rich and wonderful emotions which arise during romance come from within us, not form the 'loved one.' This realization provides a sense of freedom and diviness which can be honored and brought forwards, in bits and pieces, into all of our relationships. I like the last line from the first review following: "The message here is that human love is attained when one accepts responsibility for his/! her own happiness or unhappiness and refrains from living out happiness through another human being." Well said!

Russian-American geneticist and historian Birstein's first trade book is the story of "the state control of science in the Soviet Union." A comprehensive history of how Russian scientists were ruled by their government from the Bolshevik revolution through its post-perestroika present, the volume focuses especially on doctors who conducted state-authorized experiments on political prisoners while developing poisons and chemical weaponry that were eventually used in a rash of political assassinations during the 1950s and '60s by way of covert weapons such as umbrella tips and poisoned bullets. But very little of this material reads like an Ian Fleming novel; it's more like a college textbook. With over 100 pages of notes, biographical sketches and translated materials, the text is so finely detailed that it runs the risk of confusing readers with its sheer volume of information. Moreover, most of the original documents Birstein relies upon are still classified and "these documents are... frequently written in a special metaphoric language used by NKVD/KGB offices. Only since 1997 have three fundamental reference books been published in Russian that have allowed me to put the events in Soviet science into historical context." These shortcomings are unfortunate, as the subject of state secrecy and chemical weapons development is both important and timely. In uncovering the Soviet labyrinth of plot and secrecy, Birstein builds labyrinths of his own and casual readers might not be willing to wind their way through to the end.

Speaking from personal experience and aided greatly by archival materials and reference books made accessible in the 1990s, geneticist Birstein offers a comprehensive account of 80 years of governmental control and censorship of science in the Soviet Union. He describes how academic and research scientists in the nation's scientific institutions were replaced with political functionaries who often had no knowledge of the sciences they represented. He emphasizes Stalin's favorite, the fraudulent geneticist Lysenko, and also the biochemist Mairanovsky, who in his poison lab experimented on prisoners, often fatally. Birstein graphically describes some of those experiments, as well as secret-service tortures, referring briefly to experiments on supposed volunteers in the U.S., Canada, and England. Early on he says he wants readers to ask what they would have done in the same circumstances, and later he tells the stories of several scientists who took firm ethical stands and survived. Excellent history, somewhat poor delivery

Even if you know a bit about Soviet history, the history of Soviet science as told by Vadim Birstein is shocking and repulsive - all those great minds lost who were never allowed to make the great discoveries they no doubt would have made. The tragedy for not just Russian culture but human societies everywhere is hard to fathom. Russian culture up to the time of the Revolution of 1917 was in the midst of one of its greatest periods of florescence. It is known as the Silver Age to most, though some specialists refer to it as Russia's true Golden Age. The Bolsheviks put an end to that, and the loss was incalculable. The particular chapter of that story regarding the machinations, manipulations, and perversions in Russia's scientific community is told in great detail by Birstein, who witnessed some of that history from the inside; his father was a scientist. The stories of cowardice made me wince, though the rare acts of courage were inspiring.

The one complaint I have about the book is the poor copy editing. The author is not a native speaker, and the English was a bit spotty. For example, on p. 179, the same name is spelled differently in the same paragraph: Shirshov and Shiroshov. Also, on p. 248 is Schmalhauzen, and on the next page is Schmalhausen. Finally, on p. 260 is a letter that was obviously translated by author: "...somebody knocked at the door and a little bit strange head of a short man appeared." Things like this are amusing until you realize you paid for them. Elsewhere the author used "convicted to 25 years in prison" instead of "sentenced" or "condemned." Examples of bad English appear literally on every page. This the publisher's fault; it should have had the book copy edited. This doesn't detract from the contents, though it is disappointing to pay for a book and discover that the publisher wasn't interested in delivering a high-quality product.

All in all, though, it's a worthwhile read for anyone interested in Russian or Soviet history or the history of science.

Thorough research, badly proofread text

This comprehensive recounting of the subordination of Soviet science is comparable to the Gulag Archipelago in its thoroughness. It is similarly a slow read due to the great detail and copious footnoting.

One only wishes that it had been proofread. The "Supreme Soviet" (legislature) is referred to throughout as "Highest Council", "collaborators" is given as "collaborates", "diverziya" (Russian for "sabotage") is rendered as "diversion", an enveloped is described as "concealed" instead of "sealed", etc. The printing is strangely irregular: often there are no spaces between a period and the first word of the next sentence.

The Conflict Between Hard Secularism and Science As Told From A Russian Academy of Sciences Member

This book was written by a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and thus contains some excellent insider information on the state of science under the many decades of Russia's secularist-atheist government starting with Lenin. It documents the history of science in that part of the world from a rigorous angle. It really reads like a massive drama between the hard secularist government taking over science and killing many scientists for pathetic reasons. The author does note parallels between Nazi Germany and the Soviet state in term of aims, methods, and goals so there are some comparisons to think about. Of course, the tragic history and suffering of science in the Soviet state could have been otherwise and all of the deaths and misery could have been prevented if the hard secularist government was more rational and open minded. Indeed, those who read the book and other sources on Soviet science will be shocked on how systematic the persecutions were and how much damage it ultimately caused to the world. Surely, the world lost many great scientific minds due to the narrow mindedness of a totalitarian government.

In hearing much about the history of science and religion, I decided to investigate some historical relations that existed between science and hard secularism. Much of what one reads here resembles situations that were faced in other secularist-atheist countries like China and Cambodia for many unfortunate years.

With the Soviets, it is known that in biology they had Lysenkoism where they had rejected Mendelian genetics completely along with empirical ideas such as chromosomes and genes + rejected Darwinian evolution (specifically rejecting natural selection and positing natural cooperation instead and holding Lamarckian views), the denial of Quantum mechanics and relativity (though this was partially saved due to the desire of the Soviets to have an atomic bomb - "atomic shield"). Further reading:

Lysenko and the Tragedy of Soviet Science (written by a fellow scientist who survived the persecutions of scientists in the Soviet Union. Documents heavily with many primary sources, the tragedy in Biology (mainly Lysenkoism) with things like: the purges of elite scientists in biology, the strong denialism of Darwinian evolution (especially natural selection) - excellent detailed section, the wholesale rejection and banning of genetics (which impeded and sent the biological sciences, agronomy, and medicine in a backwards trajectory for decades) , the persecution of the father of population genetics (Sergei Chetverikov) and many others, the incredible loss to the world of thousands legitimate and gifted scientists who lost their careers, lives or were imprisoned)
Stalin and the Soviet Science Wars (excellent study of 6 fields and the one on physics is very interesting in showing the Soviet denialism of quantum mechanics and relativity, but luckily since the Soviets wanted an atomic bomb, this was partially spared by the "atomic shield" as the book says)
Science and Ideology: A Comparative History (Routledge Studies in the History of Science, Technology and Medicine)

Introduction

The Soviet Union's efforts to control science were a part of a larger effort to control the "intelligentsia" (1); Communist society was supposed to have only 2 classes: proletariat and peasants; the Civil War occurred between 1918-1921 and the conflicts were between the Bolsheviks and the bourgeois; this book will deal with Lysenkoism - a body of Marxist beliefs that was almost magical in nature (this pseudobiology came from an uneducated agronomist named Trofim Lysenko) which denied the existence of genes and chromosomes as a basis for inheritance and species as a basis of evolution, believed that no animals competed with each other and instead "helped" each other out (7); human experiments that rivaled the Nazi experiments; scientists' involvement in unethical experimentation and the approvals of those by fellow scientists

1. Science Under Siege

There was some resistance, by few scientists, on the communist attempt to control science; the Bolsheviks' hatred of the bourgeois was heavy to the point that the Bolsheviks eliminated scientists they considered a bourgeois; the origins of the Russian Academy of Sciences - in contrast to the US or Western Europe, the Academy of Sciences in Russia was started before any universities were established (first one was in 1755 in Moscow); the Academy of Sciences was created by Peter the Great in 1725; in 1917, before the Revolution, the Academy of Sciences included international scientists; Dmitri Mendeleev (author of the Periodic Law) was never elected into the Academy of Sciences; once the Bolsheviks took over Russia in the Revolution, they made science be a servant to their communism/materialism by coining the term "Communist science" to their narrow minded view of science (24); Bolsheviks cracked down on Academy members and some were executed or put in labor camps; the official policy towards scientists and intellectuals by Lenin was "The intellectual forces of the workers and peasants are growing and gaining strength in the struggle to overthrow the bourgeois and its henchmen, the intellectual lackeys of capital, who imagine they are the brains of the nation." (35); besides arrests and show trials, another method Lenin used to control science and universities was to insert many members of the Bolshevik Party with low professional levels in universities in hopes of having them replace old professors; Lenin hated economists and the field of economics since they used Adam Smith's capitalism as a basis; censorship of science and many books were enforced by the communists; in 1924 Lenin died and Stalin took over and did not tolerate independent thinking and "forced" most scientists to vote for members in the Academy of Sciences the way he wanted and by 1930 the state control of the Academy was largely complete; the 1929 statute of the Academy included a line on loyalty to the USSR; a commission cleansed 781 out of 1,000 employees and scientists from the Academy of sciences; after 1930, expulsions from the academy became routine; once in power, Stalin and the Party would decide which scientific theory was correct; in 1927, Trofim Lysenko came to power; biology was the most vulnerable field to the Party's influence (mainly because it did not require much heavy training as say physics); Lysenko and Stalin's chief ideologist had no background in biology but often participated in biological discussions; "Lysenkoism", a body of "dialectic Marxist" beliefs, was created by Trofim Lysenko - an uneducated agronomist - and it denied the existence of genes as a basis of inheritance and species as a basis of evolution (46); Lysenko's "Marxist-Michurinist genetics replaced the "bourgeois Weismannist-Morganist-Mendelist theory" of inheritance (which were all denied by Lysenkoists); Lysenko's theory of fertilization was absurd and his understanding of evolution, "creative Darwinism" is confusing since Lysenko says that no one knows what a species is and other nonsense; other absurd Lysenko beliefs included that there is no class struggle in the same species (all members of the same species help each other) and species can transform to another in a single leap; Lysenkoism dominated Soviet biology from the mid-1930s to the late 1960s; Stalin and other Party members were "elected" into the Academy of Sciences; there are parallels between Nazis and Soviets in terms human experimentation; 1947 Stalin did many campaigns against the "intelligentsia", especially Jews; Jewish doctors were persecuted for dubious reasons; the KGB overwhelmingly controlled science from the 1950s-1980s; the author gives his account of the harassment, spying, blocking employment opportunities and keeping him unemployed, and the destruction of his research manuscripts to prevent him from publishing his research because he was Jewish, by the KGB; the author was working in one lab where the professional level was low and even the head of the laboratory did not know the terms "genes" and "chromosomes" due to the deeply engrained Lysenkoism in Soviet science; crop yields decreased in the Soviet Union due to Lysenkoism nonsense (78)

In the 1920s, one of the leading genetic institutions in the world was Nikolai Koltsov's institute; in 1927 Koltsov described the double helix of DNA by a different name and was at the forefront of genetic research, however, because he rejected Lysenko's pseudobiology he was blocked from institutions, lost his institute to Lysenkoists, and was eliminated from scientific literature for 25 years after he died; "From the 1920s-1950s, one needed to have courage to withstand the ideological pressure of the Soviet state and to retain one's scientific and human beliefs. Biologists could be punished for two "crimes" - nonacceptance of Lysenko's doctrine and protests against arrests of colleagues. The second was especially dangerous." (209); two notable valiant resisters of Lysenkoism in the 1930s and 1940s were Vavilov and Pryanishnikov; for Vavilov, some scientists were forced by torture to confess things against him, he was kept under the close eye of the state, was sabotaged, arrested, put on trial, condemned to death, appealed to save his life and give in to the Soviet ideology, but ultimately died in a labor camp or was killed (not clear on which); other scientists were victims of Soviet injustice; there were labor camps where condemned scientists were able to work on some research; "Lysenko's destruction of genetics and geneticists would not have been complete without the destruction of the evolutionary theory that is based upon genetics. After World War II, Lysenko and his ideologist, Prezent, started a crusade against this theory...he attacked a famous botanist, Academician Pyotr Zhukovsky, who "dared" not to accept Lykenko's new theory: his denial of intraspecies competition, the basis of Darwin's evolutionary theory...As usual, Lysenko did not bother to give any scientific proof to confirm his thesis..." (247); Lysenko's battles with those who held different views; 3 key scientists that fought Lysenko in 1947 were Schmalhausen, Formozov, and Sabinin and they all had unfortunate ends since they lost their jobs, some of their scientific publications were withdrawn, etc; Aleksandr Oparin, who wrote the famous book called "Origin of Life", was a pro-Lysenkoist strangely enough; how a typical Lysenkoist (262-266); opposition to Lysenko and his fall; "It is amazing that decisions about Soviet biology and theoretical medicine were made at the highest Part and state level." (288); if it was not for Stalin's death more arrests would have occurred for those who opposed Lysenkoism - it was only a matter of time(288-289); because of the 1948 session more than 3,000 biologists, who opposed Lysenkoism, lost their jobs (289); "However, the introduction of Lysenkoism as the Party line in biology and biomedicine caused a selection of persons without moral integrity in these fields. Moreover, almost all Lysenkoists and their supporters kept their positions after the fall of Lysenko in 1964-1965. Those real scientists who lost their jobs because they rejected Lysenkoism never had the opportunity to realize their scientific talents and potential. Such scientists of the highest moral determination and integrity as Drs. Rapoport and Efroimson wasted their talents during years of persecution without a professional job. The Soviet society that killed countless citizens in labor camps was not interested in talented scientists unless they were completely under the ideological control of the Party. Even when Rapoport and Efroimson were able to continue their work, they were dependent on more conformist scientists like Academician Semenov." (290-291); the Soviets had slave scientists in labor camps working on important projects like developing nuclear weapons - "On the whole, the A-bomb and H-bomb projects completely depended on the work of prisoners. The whole uranium industry was controlled by the Gulag system. I think that the involvement of physicists in work based on slave labor seriously influenced the moral atmosphere at the academy after many physicists who participated in secret projects became its members. And those scientists who went through the camps and 'sharashki' never recovered from from their horrifying experiences. Analyzing the memoirs of survivors of the Soviet and Nazi camps, the historian Mikhail Heller concluded: "Even those who [physically] survive in a camp, die [emotionally and morally]. Only few of them manage to resurrect again later." (295)

Not just Dictionary, but plus great idiomatics of Javanese phrases

On the cover of the dictionary it says "These pages contain clear explanations of significant features of Javanese culture (pesing, wahyu), folklore (murwakala, thuyul)......". I wonder why thuyul that was more known only as-written in the dictionary- a spirit in the form of a child that can be sent out to gather wealth for its master, is part of folklore.
Then I realized from the dictionary that there was a second meaning of thuyul "written in the dictionary"- as a young (apprentice) dancing girl.

Yes, this dictionary is a great source to find the meaning of Javanese words, because many old Javanese words were not used anymore in daily life, so it would be hard to ask some one to have the meaning.
Even many ancient words used in Javanese Gamelan music are also available.

Although this dictionary does contain only Javanese to English (no English to Javanese), is still remarkable.

About the Author
Lewis A. Drummond (1927-2004) served as Billy Graham Professor of Evangelism and Church Growth at Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, Alabama. Drummond spoke regularly at crusades and conferences sponsored by the Billy Graham Association and the Baptist World Alliance.

About the Author
Lori O'Connell Sensei holds a 5th degree black belt and full instructor's license in Can-Ryu Jiu-jitsu, and has trained in martial arts for over 20 years and taught martial arts for 17 years in Canada and abroad. Lori currently runs her own Jiu-jitsu dojo, operating in the greater Vancouver area in Canada since 2006. She also teaches local women's self-defense programs, personal safety & awareness programs and corporate self-defense seminars. In addition to her martial arts training and teaching, Lori also writes regularly on her martial arts blog, and has published a book, Weapons of Opportunity, about her personal experiences teaching and training in the martial arts.

Fantastic Presentation of Solid Techniques

I've long been a fan of grappling and the ground "game" but have never really been exposed to self-defense techniques for a ground-scenario. This is a great book that includes a lot of excellent photos on the topic. Everything is very easy to understand and presented with context. The contextual information really makes the difference as it take the book from being more than just a technical manual and into something far more relevant to "real life"

The DVD is a nice addition as well. Great book. Would recommend to anyone who does martial arts or is interested in self-defense.

Solid Foundation From Which to Begin

I am always skeptical about any work that talks about: "when the fight goes to ground." The reality of that very scenario is as harsh as the outcome far removed from the contrived octagon with its myriad of rules of safety.

In LE incidents, it is usually how the multiple officers contain a single non-compliant suspect successfully, or how an LE is in a world of hurt and fighting for his or her very life against the worst case-scenario.

In combat it means the target has been terminated or combatants are attempting to kill one another by any and all means available, where the most vicious soul will prevail.

This book bridges a gap that needed filled, and O'Connell Sensei provided solid basics of the movements required, that are fundamental for survival, when one has been rendered to the ground, for whatever reason. Both the book and the DVD complement this intense learning experience.

Bathed in common sense and practicality I have not witnessed in a while, in this arena, the reader/viewer will gain the insights into what will assist one in managing the self with top notch motor skills while on the ground, seeking to prevail in less than ideal circumstances.

Some weaknesses do exist, in that getting back up on the feet was not overly stressed. Getting back up into a vertical posture, quickly and smoothly, is paramount to survival here. We are at our most vulnerable when on the ground without weapons. Yes, we must be able to manage our actions to protect ourselves when we are on the ground. But we must be able to get upright and mobile to prevail. While getting to base was shown, standing up from any grounded position was lacking. It is not as easy as people think--though simple, it can be hazardous, if the basics of this transition are not fully understood, and these fundamentals own nothing to do with what is found in athletic contests. It's aggressive and proactive even from our worst position.

The other weakness was, while the book and video were both meticulous in its instructional presentations of these solid basics, there was no real example of the fast and brutal, real time action that happens in this environment. It was all very slowed down, and this impedes the realization of what is really needed down here. The abruptness changes things--mentally and physically.

People needing to learn the applications also need to learn this abruptness and violence of how things unfold, otherwise they become much more subjected to personal panic of not knowing.

The applications are solid--100%--some of the best teaching presentations out there--simple, direct and economical in the execution of said basics. If one masters these and then can apply them under the dire duress of the brutality that is ground combat, one will finally understand this area of operation. But that is the catch, the brutality of this arena must be understood if one desires to arrive on the other side of prevailing.

Technically and for an instructional format with the book and DVD, this is a superbly accomplished item, very well done, indeed.

Great addition to my library

Excellent book, and great value for money. Lori provides great advice on using ground fighting skills in a self-defence context. All of the techniques are clearly explained and well illustrated with photographs, with tips for how to drill and practice the techniques - very useful for those with limited or no ground fighting experience. In addition to the technical content, there is also sound advice on legal implications and strategic considerations, which even those with a comprehensive competitive grappling background should find useful. The included DVD is a great bonus to help visualize the techniques. I am definitely recommending this book to my students.

Elegant and scholarly review and commentary

This book is a treasure of feeling and experiencing the spirit of Sengcan and his Xinxinming. The author in a scholarly, yet feeling manner gives us the historic and philosophical background of this work and gives us insight into the connections of buddhism, taoism, and chan in this great poem. This is not a quick read, but can be savored slowly. I always felt happier and see glimpses of "The Great Way" when I read and experience the wisdom of Sengcan. The Xinxinming and this book are to be read again and again.

Trust in Mind, Faith/Mind sutra

The Faith/mind poem or sutra is a well loved and important piece written by Sengcan or Sosan Zenji, the 3rd Zen Patriarch. This poem is rich and accessible, and no matter how new or old to zen practice a student might be the sutra contains many levels of teachings.
What is wonderful about this book by Mu Soeng, is that he not only includes numerous translations of the poem by zen masters such as Suzuki and Sheng-yen, but he also delves into the history of zen at the time this poem was written. I tend to find history a dry subject, but Mu Soeng keeps it interesting and pertinent. This book is valuable not only for the sutra it contains, but also for the great insight into the evolution of zen practice.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in deepening their practice or anyone interested in how what we know as Zen has come to us in the form that it has.

Trust In Mind by Mu Soeng is seminal work that goes to the very heart of the Buddha's teachings. Mu Soeng brings alive the very esoteric .verses in a way that makes them relevant to the 21st century mind. Prior to reading this fascinating work, I found much of Seng T'san's poem, Hsin Hsin Ming, deeply mystical and abstruse. The clarity with which Mu Soeng exposed the core meanings in this work is second to none. I will re-read this wonderful book many times over the years to come - should I be that fortunate to live so long.

Anyone who has caught Pat Buchanan's television appearances, or heard his campaign rhetoric, will be surprised at his relatively evenhanded and thoughtful tone as he writes--often quite persuasively--in favor of the restoration of the political, military, and economic independence that largely drove U.S. foreign policy in the 19th century. At the heart of A Republic, Not an Empire is a well-written history of U.S. foreign policy beginning with the end of the American Revolution, going through the First and Second World Wars, Vietnam, and the end of the cold war, up to the superpower's involvement in the Persian Gulf and the former Yugoslavia. This section is bookended by, essentially, two very long op-ed pieces that lay out Buchanan's view of U.S. foreign policy: American interests should determine all foreign-policy decisions.

The twin foreign-policy goals of interventionism and free trade that seem to drive the Clinton administration's foreign policy are, Buchanan argues, the same pursuits "that brought the British Empire to ruin." Empires fall, he reminds us, through war and too many foreign commitments. With the end of the cold war, he suggests, U.S. foreign policy has become chaotic, driven by special interests; the sum of U.S. global commitments has become greater than the country's ability to defend them. Claiming to rescue history from the clutches of revisionists who not only slander the idea of isolationism but also get their history wrong, Buchanan (The Great Betrayal, etc.) offers a ringing defense of isolationismAthough he doesn't call it that. Instead, Buchanan calls his foreign policy one of national interest. It is rooted in an outlook that is not just politically conservative but metaphysically conservative: "The fatal flaw in the globalist vision is that it is utopian. It envisions a world that has never existed and can never exist, because it is contrary to fallen human nature." Scoffing at dreamy internationalism (e.g., Woodrow Wilson's na?ve desire to make the world "safe for democracy" and George Bush's trumpeting of a "new world order"), he invokes George Washington's Farewell Address warning against foreign entanglements and John Quincy Adams's dictum that it is not America's destiny "to go abroad in search of monsters to destroy." At issue, argues Buchanan, is America's sovereignty: the country should not make commitments to the U.N. or even NATO that will exact a price of blood and treasure where no vital national interest is at stake. As Buchanan ranges widely through American history, historians will find ample opportunity to sling analytical darts. But readers who can stomach the author's more outrageous fits of polemical bile (e.g., claiming that Joseph McCarthy "did nothing to... compare to what was done to the patriots of America First") will have to admit that Buchanan makes a stirring and entertaining argumentAeven if, as U.S. intervention in Kosovo and NATO expansion illustrate, it is, for the foreseeable future, a losing argument. The companion to Buchanan's excellent book on the usually soporific topic of trade policy, The Great Betrayal , shows the columnist^-broadcaster^-presidential candidate still in top form. A Republic is his foreign policy book, in which he criticizes both current approaches--the new Wilsonism of President Clinton and the king-of-the-mountainism, so to speak, of most Republicans. As he sees it, these approaches invite trouble by requiring the U.S. to dominate the world, which he considers impossible and undesirable. It is impossible because Americans won't tolerate "another Vietnam" and don't intend to provide the military resources to make good on global commitments. It is undesirable because it makes the U.S. the military servant of other, often quite wealthy and populous nations (e.g., Japan, South Korea, Israel) and the target of resentment from dissidents in those nations: from the first situation the U.S. gets nothing in exchange, and from the second it may get terrorist attacks and, should the dissidents gain power, enemies. Instead of a globalist-internationalist policy, Buchanan urges that self-interest drive U.S. foreign policy. The U.S. should protect its citizens within its own well-defended borders, offer assistance short of troop deployment to allies (and require allies not to sell military technology to U.S. adversaries), withdraw troops from other nations that can afford their own defense, and avoid wars in places or for causes in which the U.S. has no interest that its citizens will accept as reason to fight. The best feature of Buchanan's argument is that he bases it in a history of U.S. foreign policy from Washington to the present. Excellent,if flawed,overview of American foreign policy

Overall, this is an outstanding book; well backed up by the author's research. Buchanan takes a second look at our nation's history and comes to some strong, controversial conclusions. While I do not agree with some of his arguments,the book is not an apology for Hitler, as many in the media and elsewhere have said. Apparently, none of them bothered to read the book before forming their conclusions. Buchanan's thesis, that America would be better off avoiding foreign entanglements ,as George Washington warned two centuries ago, seems fairly incontrovertible to me. I disagree with his assessment of the Mexican War and a few other points, but overall this book is pretty much on the mark. Soft on Hitler- absolutely not. Soft on James Polk and William McKinley-to a certain degree,yes. Readers who approach this book with an open mind will stand to learn a great deal. Those who hate Buchanan are not going to give it a fair review, so I encourage every reader to ignore the mindless reviews that falsely accuse Buchanan of "supporting the wrong side of the war,"etc..., and judge the book on its merits.

A Freedom Lover, Not a Hitler Lover

John McCain never read this book. That is clear to anyone who does read it. Mr. Buchannan recaps the history of US foreign relations; his analysis of the events leading up our entry into World War II is scholarly, fair, and plausible. He has not a good word fot Hitler; his thesis is that Hitler was no threat to us, and that we do not need to bail out the rest of the world whenever evil rears its' ugly head. (It is arguable that what replaced Hitler in eastern Europe was worse than Nazism, based on the body count on Communism's ledger in the years since Lenin.) Most Americans are probably non-interventionists at heart; the sharp decline in armed forces recruiting may be traceable to a sense that the missions in the post-Cold War era have no clear connection to defending America. (As a veteran, I was/am willing to risk battle for my country, but have no inclination to kill Serbs on behalf of Albanians, or vice versa.) One may disagree with him (as I do on trade), but this is a reasonable book, and nothing written in it makes him a friend of facism. Give Mr. Buchannan his due, and read it for yourself - you'll be a step ahead of his critics. -Lloyd A. Conway

Buchanan's Research Crushes His Critics

Pat Buchanan, as he did with The Great Betrayal, exposes the real enemies of America (the Establishment within Washington, DC and the mainstream media which are arm-in-arm promoting a New World Order)with concrete evidence and hard cold fact and he does it by going back with a thorough analysis of our nation's entire foreign policy history.
Regrettably, most reviews critical of A Republic, Not an Empire are blatant personal attacks on Mr. Buchanan by people who usually have not read his book. And if they said they read it we are merely taking there written word it. Words meant to assure us of their intellectual honesty, yet words tucked in a writing of hate. Which is exactly the opposite character of Mr. Buchanan. These attacks violate the spirit and the letter of the guidelines posted by Amazon for writing and posting reviews. Sadly Amazon lets these condescending and belittling reviews continue.
Thus, I would challenge everyone to ignore the reviews posted by me and others and read those above by Amazon, Kirkus Reviews, and Booklist. While they admittedly strive to be fair, balanced, measured and objective, you will find all three tip-their-hat to Mr. Buchanan for wrestling with the important issues of our time with unparalleled historical research.
