Banker, Traitor, Scapegoat, Spy?: The Troublesome Case of Sir Edgar Speyer, by Antony Lentin

Sir Edgar Speyer was a conspicuous figure in the financial, cultural, social and political life of Edwardian London. Head of the syndicate which financed the construction of the deep "tube lines" and "King of the Underground", he was also a connoisseur and active patron of the arts who rescued the "Prom" from collapse, enhanced the nation's musical and artistic life at his own expense and directed the funding of Captain Scott's Antarctic expeditions. Speyer and his wife, the concert violinist, Leonora Speyer lived in fabulously magnificent style. Early in the early summer of 1914 they stood at the peak of their success and celebrity in London society. Within weeks, on the outbreak of war, they became pariahs, objects of suspicion and aversion. Despite having been a naturalised British citizen for over 20 years and an ubiquitous public benefactor, Speyer found himself ostracised by society and mercilessly harried by the Northcliffe press. Under the Aliens Act of 1918, Speyer was summoned in 1921 before a judicial enquiry which found him guilty of disloyalty and disaffection and of communicating and trading with the enemy. He was stripped of his citizenship and membership of the Privy Council. Pilloried by The Times as a traitor, Speyer vehemently denied the charges, but he never returned to England thereafter and never forgot his ordeal.

... misjudged and mis-treated by those who should have known better. He was a generous man
By Nina Birder
Sir Edgar Speyer appears to have been a man greatly misjudged and mis-treated by those who should have known better. He was a generous man, kind to the less fortunate, visionary in his thinking, and badly abused by his peers who were caught up in anti-German hysteria. A good read.

It was a great read. Letin does a great job on all ...
By Eduard Beit
It was a great read. Letin does a great job on all sides of the issue. My relatives who went through WWI (on all sides of the conflict) struggled even 50 years later to make sense of what had happened. Brothers lost, fortunes destroyed, nations changed.

I think scapegoat is probably the right way to view the episode, but I am of course biased given that Sir Edgar was my great great uncle.

The Speyer case revisited....
By Phillip Taylor MBE
[[VIDEOID:mo2H3SLA8MKSETE]]THE VERDICT - EVIDENT VENGEANCE WITH AN ABSENCE OF HUMANITY

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

We can understand why Tony Lentin was so taken by this disturbing and sad story because of his extensive legal background and his substantial expertise in all matters to do with modern history in particular, and an inquisitiveness which would not have gone amiss in 1921.

Speyer's story is an important historical biography and also plays a part in our modern legal history, albeit a shameful episode where things went wrong for Speyer for all the wrong reasons. It is to be hoped that this sort of thing will never happen again, but we would not like to bet on it!

As Louis Blom-Cooper remarks in his Foreword, a judicial review of this particular administrative action against Speyer for the State's flawed, irrational and blatantly prejudicial decision in 1921 to discriminate against him would almost certainly succeed today with a different, fair result for Sir Edgar and his family.

Lentin has worked extremely hard to uncover the correspondence and associated papers which are set out clearly in the detailed notes and he includes a section on further reading and a detailed index. His scholarship throughout is first rate, highly competent and paints an appalling picture of what can happen when the power of the State becomes `irrational'. We do not use such a heavy word as `corrupt' although the inferences from the published papers in this book highlight the sort of flawed decision-making we should not see again in the United Kingdom.

If there is anything which we can take comfort from with the Speyer case it is that modern judicial review, however costly, must be retained and improved for the future if there is to be any scrutiny of the bad decision-making highlighted in Speyer. We have all had our days in a court when we know that forces are at work well outside the decision-making process we are asking the court to undertake: alas, we can never prove it!

So, there is a lesson to be learnt from Tony Lentin's endeavours: the need for an external review of bad ministerial and administrative decisions which might one day become enshrined in our constitution to prevent another Speyer. All we can feel is that the same thing did not happen to the Mountbattens and others who were more fortunate, and not Jewish: no more vengeance and a little more humility should be the new order of the day.

Concise, comprehensive jam-packed powerhouse of a cookbook
By J.C. Keller
I just received this book and sat down for several hours checking the entire book. The beginning has a concise description of water bath and pressure canning. Even if you'd never done it before, you could learn it from this section. I can say this with confidence because I've been canning for more than 30 years and know what a beginner would need.

This book is aimed at people who already have an interest in stocking up so it uses items commonly found in a prepper's stash. It's a well-known truism that you should rotate your food storage. So, if you've been afraid to try it, this book should motivate you to actually make soups, stews, meat dishes from your stores. I especially liked the section on making your own dried soup mixes! I have food allergies and most commercial dried soups contain things I can't have. This book solves that problem and expands my possibilities. The recipes for dehydrated beef jerky and fruit leathers look good. I would have liked some information on what to do about dehydrating without power, just as she included information on canning outside on an open fire. But this is a small complaint compared to all that this book does contain.

There is also a section on substitutes that would help a cook any time there's something missing in the pantry. Don't have butter? Recipe calls for buttermilk and you don't have it? Don't have whipped cream for a dessert topping? There are instructions on how to make your own substitutes. I tried the whipped topping already. Not bad! Actually, pretty good. It's made from dried milk, something most preppers store. There is a wonderful section on creating your own herbal mixtures for different recipes. What if you couldn't get your favorite McCormick Spice blend? Check this section.

The book is arranged logically, with sections for breakfast, lunch, dinner, beverages and snacks. There are recipes for homemade saltines, homemade vanilla wafers, and directions on how to turn quinoa into a really tasty sounding breakfast cereal. There's a recipe for homemade corn flakes! There are directions for pressure canning meats. Only one recipe concerns me. The meat loaf recipe has bread crumbs in it and the USDA has stated that putting wheat products in pressure canned recipes increases the chance for botulism. I would like to know if this recipe the author included really is safe because based on what I know, canning a solid chunk of meat loaf like this may not be. Still, I could be wrong. There are also instructions for canning hot dogs.

I am an experienced cook, canner, and prepper and this book had plenty of new ideas for me. Finally, I am impressed with the author's credentials. She worked with the American Red Cross specializing in the Armed Forces Emergency Services center and was trained in disaster management. With personal experience in helping manage aid for families after 9/11, the author says that and seeing families struggle during hard economic times has convinced her of the need to share her expertise in helping others prepare for emergencies. If I hadn't been convinced of the need already, this book would have convinced me.

This book is common sense. It's not screaming doomsday. It's teaching survival, but it also teaches frugality, how to stretch your food to feed more people, what to do if you run out of certain things. This book is hope, but more than that, it's a tool useful to anyone who wants to do more with their food storage. After all, we aren't creating a food museum in our pantries. Also, who says you have to eat boring or bland food during a crisis? With this book in hand, you can practice now what might save your family later. (I've been through a fourteen day power outage after a horrible ice storm here and have personally used many of the ideas in this book--but I still wish I had this book sooner! It would have saved me some trial and error.) So five stars for this comprehensive, jam-packed little powerhouse of a cookbook. In these difficult times, learning how to do more with less is a good thing.

It's more than a cookbook of great recipes. It's a how-to guide for preppers and newbies.
By George Romano
Recently, I had the pleasure to review The Prepper's Cookbook, 300 Recipes to Turn Your Emergency Food Into Nutritious, Delicious, Life-Saving Meals by Tess Pennington. This book contains practical information for the beginning as well as for seasoned preppers, but doesn't stop there. It's more than a cookbook of great recipes. It's a how-to guide for preppers and newbies.

In the introduction to the book, Ms. Pennington sets up a beautiful and rich story of the history of these recipes from tales of her great, great grandmother, who traveled across Oklahoma in a covered wagon with seventeen children. They not only lived on the food that they produced, but also put a portion of their harvest aside for future use.

She addresses homesteaders and preppers as neo-pioneers and begins her book by starting with the basics of prepping, food storage and rotation. Topics such as how much food to store, how to rotate your supplies and why you need to store certain types of foods are covered. There is even good advice offered on how to economically stretch your meals.

Ms. Pennington then addresses how to store and treat potentially unsafe water for use.

In the next section, food preservation is tackled. This section contains information on water bath and pressure canning including considerations for "Canning Off The Grid". It also covers the topic of dehydration, including some delicious recipes for jerky.

The Prepper's Cookbook then moves on to the mouth-watering recipes which encompass everything from breakfast to dinner and from snacks to desserts. The meals listed go from from simple to complex and include a great variety of cultural (Southern, Italian, Greek and Tex-Mex) recipes as well as comfort food. This book is packed with a lot of different ideas and recipes for food that would suit even the pickiest of eaters as well as those with special dietary needs, such as diabetics.

When I received this book, my wife saw it and literally ran with it, looking through it, noting various recipes for us to try. One of our personal family favorites is King Ranch. Thank you, Tess!

I'd like to conclude this review with some thoughts from my wife, who is a great cook in her own right. My wife read the book as well and when I asked her her thoughts, she commented, "It is a great cookbook and is not just for preppers. It's a great cookbook in general and the author was brilliant in creating it."

This book is kid friendly and contains something for every palate, from drinks to full meals. As the author recommends, "Don't just survive, thrive!" This book will definitely help you to do just that and belongs on your list of "must haves."

Preppers Take Note: Great for reference and food storage use.
By Christina
This book is awesome. I've got a lot of prepping books and while they talk about water storage and how you can "lightly chlorinate" your water for storage, they fail to tell you what that means. This book covered everything about food and water storage in about 30 pages. A quick flip through can tell you how to can your own food and tell if home canned products have gone bad. The amount of bleach needed for water treatment and the appropriate size oxygen absorbers to use for different foods in gallon and 5 gallon buckets were also great reference items. It's a space saver for sure. I'll be putting a copy in my BOB.
I loved the fact that it had recipes for items like ketchup, saltines and plum sauce so you can make them yourself and not waste extra storage space on them when you can make them yourself from the other items you're already storing.
There's also 20 recipes on rice and beans, food storage staples. This is really nice for me because I want to start using more beans and less meat as the beans are so easy to store. Keeping meals fresh and interesting when SHTF is not something that should be overlooked.
The second half of the book are a bunch of recipes to help you start using and rotating your food storage items in case you haven't already. I love quinoa and the breakfast recipe in here is amazing. The only thing I didn't like about the recipes was the use of processed foods like Velveeta and boxed rice mixes. But these items could easily be substituted with freeze dried cheddar cheese and your own rice mixes.
That being said, the book is well worth the money for just the first 30 pages alone.

Mud and Water: The Collected Teachings of Zen Master Bassui, by Bassui Tokusho

The fourteenth-century Zen master Bassui was recognized as one of the most important Zen teachers of his time. Accessible and eloquent, these teachings cut to the heart of the great matter of Zen, pointing directly to the importance of seeing our own original nature and recognizing it as Buddhahood itself. Bassui is taking familiar concepts in Buddhism and recasting them in an essential Zen light.

Though he lived centuries ago in a culture vastly different from our own, Zen Master Bassui speaks with a voice that spans time and space to address our own modern challenges - in our lives and spiritual practice.

Like the revered Master Dogen several generations before him, Bassui was dissatisfied with what passed for Zen training, and taught a radically reenergized form of Zen, emphasizing deep and direct penetration into one's own true nature. And also like Dogen, Bassui uses powerful and often poetic language to take familiar Buddhist concepts recast them in a radically non-dual Zen light, making ancient doctrines vividly relevant.

This edition of Mud and Water contains several teachings never before translated.

Review
"Bassui was one of Japanese Zen's most original, dynamic and accessible teachers. Braverman has given us a sparkling translation that fully captures Bassui's unique vigor and insight and throws new light on an often neglected period of Zen's history" (Peter Haskel, author of Bankei Zen)

"How wonderful! Not only the words of Zen Master Bassui, but also his marrow. Wherever you go in this precious book you will find your life." (Joan Halifax Roshi, Head Teacher, Upaya Zen Center)

"Bassui's standard of enlightenment is awe inspiring! For over 30 years of our own practice Bassui's talks have inspired us. No matter how often we read him, his teaching is always fresh and alive. No matter how far into the bottomless well of wisdom we go, Bassui is there coaxing us deeper." (Zen teachers Chozen and Hogen Bays, co-abbots of Great Vow Zen Monastery)

"Step in anywhere and you sink deeper and deeper through the rich mud. Thank you, Arthur Braverman, for introducing us so graciously." (Robert Aitken)

"This work fully displays the engaging teaching style of Bassui, an important medieval Japanese master. With his independent spirit and dedication to Buddha nature, Bassui managed to bridge and include several prominent strands of Zen and Japanese Buddhism. His teachings demonstrate persistent study of true self, right in the mud of phenomena. He drinks the water of diverse Dharma teachings, helpfully elucidating their metaphors for us." (Taigen Dan Leighton, author of Bodhisattva Archtypes and translator, Cultivating the Empty Field)

Clear as Glass
By schiff
The Teachings of Zen Master Bassui are sure to instill a profound and shattering recognition in any student of the Way. Again and again this venerable maverick Zen master swings his blow at the very core of Buddhist thinking, while responding to questions and riddles posed by his own followers, as well as by monks visiting his monastery. Most of Master Bassui's teachings are arranged in the usual Q&A form, prevalent in Zen literature, with short, concise and helpful notes by the translator appearing at the end of the book. Although coming to us from a distance of some centuries, the teachings are an enjoyable reading, their message as clear as glass. Put your mind to it and learn from this extraordinary Master!

Purity and clarity in "Mud..."
By Andrew Beaulac
Zen Master Bassui's instruction always cut right to the heart of the great matter: he emphasized deep and clear penetration into one's own true nature. Questioned about many common Buddhist concepts, Bassui brought the listener - and here the reader- back again and again to the inescapable necessity of seeing one's true nature. In this manner, all the dualistic questionings are brought back to the non-dual. Arthur Braverman's translation reflects his expertise and personal history in Zen practice inasmuch as he sensitively unlocks the insights of the teachings in their original language and historical context and brings them forth into English. This and his explanatory notes keep the reader on track for understanding a Zen teacher whom I find much more accessible than Dogen. Plus, its just a very enjoyable and readable book.

And, finally, the last word.....
By Emon
If you ever read Bassui from the beginning, as one of your very first Buddhist writings, and then went on to read all those hundreds of other Buddhist works, I think you'd eventually return to Bassui: he just teaches it simply and without the circus and fanfare.
If, on the other hand, you happened upon Bassui after having read all those other hundreds of Buddhist works, then I think you just might find your self thinking "why didn't I start with Bassui from the very beginning?" If you had an original samadhi, so many years ago, and now your life is one of searching to re-experience that original "seeing", study Bassui. Especially "Letters to His Disciples". He is nuts-and-bolts Buddhism but without the labeling and the window dressing. Better yet, if it's possible, practice to realize your True Nature first, then bring in Bassui.

Guilty: Hollywood's Verdict on Arabs After 9/11, by Jack G. Shaheen

"Nothing will be the same again." Americans scarred by the experience of 9/11 often express this sentiment. But what remains the same, argues Jack G. Shaheen, is Hollywood's stereotyping of Arabs. Before 9/11, Shaheen dissected Hollywood's equation of Islam and Arabs with violence in Reel Bad Arabs, his comprehensive study of over a thousand movies. Arabs and Muslims, he showed, were used as shorthand for the "Enemy" and the "Other." In his new book about films made after 9/11, Shaheen finds the same malevolent stereotypes at play. Nearly all of Hollywood's post-9/11 films legitimize a view of Arabs as stereotyped villains-sheikhs, Palestinians, or terrorists. And this happens in every type of film imaginable: one out of four of the movies profiled here have absolutely nothing to do with the Middle East, yet producers toss in weird, shady, unscrupulous Arabs.

Along with an examination of a hundred recent movies, Shaheen addresses the cultural issues at play since 9/11: the government's public relations campaigns to win "hearts and minds" and the impact of 9/11 on citizens and on the imagination. He suggests that winning the "war on terror" would take shattering the century-old stereotypes of Arabs. He calls for speaking out, for more Arab Americans in the film industry, for fresh films, and for a serious effort on the part of our government to tackle this problem.

From Publishers Weekly
In this meticulously researched book, Shaheen (Reel Bad Arabs) spotlights anti–Muslim and Arab stereotypes and probes the intersections of popular culture and foreign policy. The author investigates the close ties between Hollywood studios and Washington and recounts how, historically, the strategic stereotyping of populations has been used to garner popular support for governmental policies, citing the career of Leni Riefenstahl and speeches by Lenin and Goebbels to illustrate film's long history as a propaganda vehicle. In an index of more than 100 post-9/11 films, the book depicts and debunks the most prevalent stereotypes of reel Arabs—exotic camel-riding nomad, oppressed maiden, corrupt sheikh, terrorist. Dehumanizing portrayals of Arabs have real consequences, according to Shaheen; he draws correlations between the media's depiction of Arabs and the massive support for the invasion of Iraq, the wanton killing of Iraqi civilians and the escalating number of hate crimes against Arabs (or people who look like Arabs) in the United States. Unfortunately, after his superbly readable historical survey, Shaheen's list of solutions—entertainment summits and sample pro-Arab film treatments—seem disappointingly prosaic. Still this book's scope and its impassioned delivery make for an insightful and rewarding read.

"Jack Shaheen is a one-man anti-defamation league."

"Dr. Jack Shaheen does it again. Guilty is a fascinating social study on the relationship between racism and cinema, and ultimately, how popular entertainment has the power to propagate damaging images of misunderstood cultures or destroy them."

To be seen in an objective light
By Jamal M. Najjab
THE INFLUENCE and power of movies in American society, as well as the rest of the world, cannot easily be avoided. One aspect of our lives that films affect more than most is how we perceive and interact with the world outside of the U.S. and those who inhabit it. According to Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan, "Movies are really hard-wired into our psyches, shaping how we view the world. It's when politics infiltrate entertainment that it is most subversive--and most effective...Artful entertainment easily beats full-on propaganda."

With this in mind, Professor Jack G. Shaheen--described by veteran journalist Helen Thomas as "a one-man anti-defamation league" because he's devoted much of his adult life to persuading Hollywood to be fair in its portrayal of Arabs and Muslims--has penned his latest book, Guilty: Hollywood's Verdict on Arabs After 9/11.

According to Shaheen, author of the bestseller Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People, "Arabs remain the most maligned group in the history of Hollywood. Malevolent stereotypes equating Islam and Arabs with violence have endured for more than a century...Arab=Muslim=Godless Enemy." In fact, Shaheen argues, the entertainment industry's vilifying of Arabs and Muslims helped prepare the American public, as well as our fighting men and women, to go to war in the Middle East.

Shaheen makes it clear that the U.S. government has had a hand in ensuring that Hollywood sends the public a negative image of this part of the world and the majority of the people who live there. "Filmmaking is political," he explains. "Dehumanizing stereotypes emerging from the cinema, TV, and other media help support government policies, enabling producers to more easily advance and solidify stereotypes."

In Guilty, Shaheen covers a new aspect of Hollywood's misrepresentation of Arab and Muslim Americans living among us. Before 9/11--as far as Hollywood was concerned, at any rate--they were invisible. Now, however, they are portrayed in movies and television programs as members of sleeper cells, waiting to receive the call to become active terrorists and do harm to their neighbors. Since 9/11, Shaheen has found, more and more prime time TV dramas include the theme of out-of-control Arab and Muslim terrorists.

Shaheen's book is a valuable resource on a subject he knows better than anyone. Quoting well-known sources to reinforce his already strong argument, he then attempts to suggest tangible solutions to this pressing problem--leaving this Arab-American reader with a sense of hope. Finally, as he did in Reel Bad Arabs, he has compiled a list of the films that have been produced since 9/11 for the reader to use as a guide. The list--which now exceeds 1,150 films--includes not only offensive movies, but also those in which their makers attempted to present a more balanced representation.

This reader made good use of this section of the book. I was thinking of renting the film "Young Black Stallion" for my 7-year-old son after noticing that the back cover of the DVD box had pictures of Arabs with their horses. After reading Shaheen's assessment of how negative the film is toward Arabs, however, I know not to go anywhere near the movie. On the other hand, Shaheen's review led me to rent Roberto Benigni's "The Tiger and the Snow," which is set in Italy and Iraq during the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. Besides being a warm, moving and funny movie, it presents the Iraqi people as just that--people.

This, after all, is what Professor Shaheen and the majority of the world's Arabs and Muslims desire: simply to be seen in an objective light, no better, no worse than anyone else. It really isn't that much to ask--is it?

"Entertainment" as propaganda...
By John P. Jones III
The aptly named `Guilty' updates Professor Shaheen's acclaimed book `Reel Bad Arabs' which was written just before Sept. 11, 2001. In each book he underscores, and documents the close connection between the political world and the entertainment one (yet, rather amazingly, he never uses the world "propaganda."). He quotes Jack Valenti in the prologue: "Washington and Hollywood spring from the same DNA." Few anecdotes better underscore this nexus than the one told in the same section about a special screening of the movie `Black Hawk Down' , before its general release, for 800 top Washington officials and military brass, including Donald Rumsfeld and Oliver North, in which they were permitted to suggest changes.

Shaheen places his subject, Hollywood, and its movies, within the greater context of the post 9/11 world in the first chapter, quoting the anti-Islamic and anti-Arab bigotry and prejudice of such public figures as Ann Coulter, Donald Rumsfeld and Tom Tancredo. The inflammatory remarks clearly led to an increase in hate-crimes, which frequently spill over against other darker skinned, and "different-looking" people like the Sikhs. Shaheen also reminds us of similar negative depictions of other ethnic groups: American Indians, Blacks, Orientals, Latinos and Jews. For the Arabs, the four negative stereotypes that are constantly promoted, as Shaheen says, are that they are all fabulously wealth; barbaric and uncultured; sex maniacs; and revel in acts of terrorism.

In his chapter on the negative movies about Arabs since 9-11, he identifies a separate category, which he calls "cameos." These are gratuitous slurs against Arabs and Islam in movies that have nothing to do with this subject, or even "terrorism." I was first struck by this concept when I read Theodore H. White's "In Search of History - A Personal Adventure" in which he made the passing remark about the "so-called" government of Kuwait. Nothing before, or after, on that subject, and certainly no comparisons with the deficiencies of other governments. All is not negative however, and Shaheen devotes an entire chapter to improved Hollywood coverage of the Arabs - certainly one of the best movies, in my opinion, as well as Shaheen's is `Rendition', released in 2007, which shows an Egyptian-born American engineer kidnapped and tortured, and one of the lessons his CIA capturers learn is that torture does not work.

Shaheen devotes a major chapter to "solutions", that is, how change may be affected. Some of his ideas seem wildly impractical in the current political climate, but he reminds us how the same could have been said about the other ethnic groups, and how they eventually were able to change their portrayal in Hollywood, and on TV. Unfortunately he does not address what the economists call "the sunk costs", that is, the tremendous economic interests in maintaining the status quo, the need to have enemies and promote conflict, all of which President Eisenhower famously warned us about in his farewell address. Nonetheless, Shaheen lists several positive steps, from new films, re-makes, to an Arab American Entertainment summit that individuals of good-will can take to change the current situation.

The second half of the book is a detailed analysis of specific movies in the post 9-11 period. Encouragingly, as he says, one-third of the movies fall into the "recommended" or "even-handed" category. He identifies the 2007 release, "The Kingdom" as the most anti-Arab movie in the post 9-11 period, and he devotes almost five pages to his analysis. What he did not discuss however was that the movie received a positive review in Saudi Arabia's `Arab News.' I too thought the movie terrible, and so was even more stunned by the positive review. Living in New Mexico now, I have seen video narratives from American Indians, who tell of their own childhood, and how they would actually root for the cowboys, when they were attacked by the "savages." Ah, the awesome power of propaganda. Clearly a bit of "consciousness raising" is still needed in the Arab world.

Shahaan's meticulous documentation of the movies and TV shows that shape our view of reality is an essential read for those who desire a better understanding of the workings of "The Masters of War."

Hollywood has always used the public's fear and loathing to create interest in it's film projects.
By Midwest Book Review
Hollywood has always used the public's fear and loathing to create interest in its film projects. In the 1980s, the communists were the most common villain in big budget Hollywood action movies. In the 2000s...Middle Eastern Terrorists have taken over that role - "Guilty: Hollywood's Verdict on Arabs after 9/11" is a scholarly look at this most common trend and how it both impacts and represents society. It also gives an optimistic look as the generic terrorist isn't the only Arabic representative in American film, but characters with real human motivations seem to be making an effort at becoming the norm. "Guilty: Hollywood's Verdict on Arabs after 9/11" is highly recommended to both social issues and film collections for community libraries.

From Booklist
Just a few years after the death of the last surviving brother, Dominic, at age 92, Clavin offers a collective biography of the best known of all sports siblings, with the emphasis, of course, on the iconic Joe (Giuseppe Junior). The story is a familiar one to baseball fans: sons of Italian immigrant parents and discouraged from sports as youngsters by their San Francisco fisherman father, the three brothers—Vince, Joe, and Dominic—all went on to Major League careers, in Joe’s case also to the Hall of Fame and celebrity well beyond the baseball diamond, notably Joe’s enduring love of Marilyn Monroe. Clavin’s treatment of their baseball lives is heavily statistical, almost encyclopedic (he’s gone through all the Yankee clippings), and, regrettably—like the brothers’ personalities (Vince possibly excepted)—it lacks panache. Oddly, the book is at its best in dealing with their later years: Vince’s personal struggles, Joe’s loneliness, Dom’s business success. Though often sad, the account achieves, toward the end of the story, its drama and real poignancy. The DiMaggios is, ultimately, the family story its title implies. --Mark Levine

From the Back Cover

More than 350 sets of brothers have played in the Major Leagues, but few have had the skill, the charisma, or the success of the DiMaggio brothers. Joe DiMaggio is an American icon and one of the greatest athletes of the twentieth century. But two of his brothers were dynamic players in their own right. Dominic, affectionately known as "The Little Professor," was a seven-time All-Star who played for the Boston Red Sox. And Vince DiMaggio, the eldest, made two All-Star teams while playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The DiMaggios reveals how three kids from an immigrant family found their way to the upper echelons of American sports and popular culture. A vivid portrait of a family and the ways in which their shifting fortunes and status shaped their relationships, it is also a transporting exploration of an era and a culture, using baseball as a lens to view and understand American society in the twentieth century.

Well written but nothing special
By Steven J. Berke
This book is of interest because it brings together the lives and careers of the DiMaggio brothers. It confirmed my earlier impression that while Joe was the better ballplayer Dom was by far the better human being (and was a pretty good ballplayer who might have made the Hall of Fame if not for Joe's shadow). It also was interesting to read Vince's story--a decent player stuck in the wrong family.

While Clavin writes and organizes his material well, it is clear he is relying on secondary sources rather than interviews or in-depth research. This does not match the depth and comprehensiveness of what has been written about Joe (especially Richard Ben Cramer's biography), but is as good as we are likely to get on Dom and Vince.

THE DiMAGGIOS is a vivid portrait of a unique American family, as well as a splendid recounting of an incredible era in baseball
By Bookreporter
More than any other sport, baseball provides fans with a substantial family connection. The Boones --- Ray, son Bob, and grandsons Bret and Aaron --- have played in the major leagues and were the first family to send three generations of players to the All-Star game. Fathers and sons from the Griffeys to the McRaes to the Swishers are well-known. Brothers Paul and Lloyd Waner ("Big Poison" and "Little Poison") are both members of the Hall of Fame. Felipe, Matty and Jesus Alou formed an outfield of brothers, and Felipe's son Moises played for 17 seasons in the National League. THE DiMAGGIOS by Tom Clavin is a tribute to a baseball family whose middle son, Joe DiMaggio ("The Yankee Clipper"), is considered to be one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century.

Much has been written about DiMaggio, and Clavin credits many of the authors who chronicled the life of the player who insisted that he be introduced at old-timer's games as "the greatest living ballplayer." It was in Boston in 1986 that Dominic, Vince and Joe DiMaggio appeared together at such an event for the first and only time. For years there had been strains in the relationship, and neither Dom nor Joe was aware that Vince was suffering from stomach cancer. He would live less than five months after this final reunion. While Vince and Dom kept in contact, their relationship with their middle brother was difficult. Dom's baseball career was with the Boston Red Sox, and he played alongside Ted Williams, who battled with DiMaggio for the title of greatest player of their era. Williams and DiMaggio also had a strained relationship, fueled to some degree by the fact that Williams was more of a mentor to Dom than his own brother.

THE DiMAGGIOS is much more than a baseball book chronicling the professional accomplishments of three brothers. Certainly there are full accounts of their careers. Vince, the eldest DiMaggio, played for 10 years in the National League. Joe was a member of the Yankees, and even those with passing knowledge of the sport are aware of his extraordinary achievements. Dom, the youngest brother, played 11 seasons with the Boston Red Sox. However, the joy in reading the book comes from its portrayal of the family, first-generation Americans whose father came here from Italy, toiling in California as a fisherman. Giuseppe DiMaggio believed in America and wanted the American dream for his nine children. For Giuseppe, playing baseball for money and being adored by millions of fans were achievements he could never fully comprehend.

The DiMaggio saga is also the story of baseball in the mid-20th century as the game truly became our national pastime. When the DiMaggios began their careers, the western boundary of major league baseball was in St. Louis, Missouri. The Pacific Coast League, technically a minor league, produced dozens of players now enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The young DiMaggios honed their skills playing for teams in that league. Vince's contract would be purchased by the Boston Bees of the National League, Joe's by the Yankees, and Dom's by the Red Sox. The three brothers were all center fielders, although Joe began his career as a shortstop. While Vince was playing for the San Francisco Seals, the team's shortstop Augie Galan was invited to barnstorm in Hawaii. The Seals manager was reluctant to lose Galan until Vince suggested that his brother Joe join the team. In 1933, Joe would hit in 61 consecutive games for the Seals, a streak he would almost match when he hit in 56 consecutive games for the Yankees (still a baseball record).

That the three brothers would end up as such different individuals is part of the engrossing saga of Tom Clavin's book. THE DiMAGGIOS is a vivid portrait of a unique American family, as well as a splendid recounting of an incredible era in baseball history. For Father's Day or any baseball fan, it will make a wonderful summer read.

Evie's shattered ribs have been a secret for the last four years. Now she has found the strength to tell her adoptive parents, and the physical traces of her past are fixed - the only remaining signs a scar on her side and a fragment of bone taken home from the hospital, which her uncle Ben helps her to carve into a dragon as a sign of her strength.
Soon this ivory talisman begins to come to life at night, offering wisdom and encouragement in roaming dreams of smoke and moonlight that come to feel ever more real.

As Evie grows stronger there remains one problem her new parents can't fix for her: a revenge that must be taken. And it seems that the Dragon is the one to take it.
This subtly unsettling novel is told from the viewpoint of a fourteen-year-old girl damaged by a past she can't talk about, in a hypnotic narrative that, while giving increasing insight, also becomes increasingly unreliable.

A blend of psychological thriller and fairy tale, The Bone Dragon explores the fragile boundaries between real life and fantasy, and the darkest corners of the human mind.

Found this a quick and moving read. Not a masterpiece, but moving, topical and enchanting. The fantasy elements were cleverly interwoven into the storyline. The reality elements were quite idealistic at times. A good teen read.

Includes recipes from Chef Del Sroufe, author of the bestselling Forks Over Knives—The Cookbook and Better Than Vegan

Nearly half of Americans take at least one prescription medicine, with almost a quarter taking three or more, as diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and dementia grow more prevalent than ever. The problem with medicating common ailments, such as high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol, is that drugs treat symptoms—and may even improve test results—without addressing the cause: diet.

Overmedicated, overfed, and malnourished, most Americans fail to realize the answer to lower disease rates doesn’t lie in more pills but in the foods we eat. With so much misleading nutritional information regarded as common knowledge, from “everything in moderation” to “avoid carbs,” the average American is ill-equipped to recognize the deadly force of abundant, cheap, unhealthy food options that not only offer no nutritional benefits but actually bring on disease.

In Food Over Medicine, Pamela A. Popper, PhD, ND, and Glen Merzer invite the reader into a conversation about the dire state of American health—the result of poor nutrition choices stemming from food politics and medical misinformation. But, more important, they share the key to getting and staying healthy for life.

Backed by numerous scientific studies, Food Over Medicine details how dietary choices either build health or destroy it. Food Over Medicine reveals the power and practice of optimal nutrition in an accessible way.

Family Physician's Perspective: Eye-Opening, Impactful, and Timely!
By Patty Lawenda
As a family physician caring for patients with the typical and epidemic chronic conditions that plague America (e.g. high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, obesity), and as someone who himself until one year ago ate a fairly typical American diet, I have to say that learning about a whole foods, plant-based diet has had a most profound impact on both my personal and professional life. Learning about this way of eating approximately one year ago has helped me personally lose 80 pounds, reduce my own health risks for chronic conditions, while leading me to transform the way I practice medicine. I now view many, if not most chronic conditions as preventable and reversible through this lifestyle, and I have found tremendous satisfaction in helping my patients see the light and take this journey themselves.

With this new passion, I have a new yearning to learn as much as I can about this unfortunately missing piece of my medical training. When I first came across “Food Over Medicine” by Popper and Merzer, I was intrigued by both the message of the title and by the style of the book in the form of a conversation between the two authors. From the opening paragraphs, the book captivated me; I felt as if I was sitting on a sofa with the authors, listening to a most fascinating and important conversation about the food we eat and how it affects our health. There is a degree of candidness in this conversation that is very telling of the industries and politics involved. I found myself often wondering, “Why haven’t we been told all of this before?”

In addition to the conversation style of the book, which makes it quite enjoyable to read, there is a very logical flow and progression to the topics. Add to that the light humor of the talented interviewer, Merzer, along with the honest and often hard-hitting, eye-opening truth telling of Popper, and you have a book that is very difficult to put down. There is also a depth to the conversation that leaves the reader with a very profound, thought provoking understanding of this most important and timely topic which ultimately affects us all in so many ways. Why is it that we spend the most money on health care in the world yet our people are amongst the unhealthiest?

Excellent job, Merzer and Popper! Thanks for writing this – you have done a great deed for the health of our society at a time when this book is needed most!

Simple, detailed and complete
By David
Pam Popper, can we clone you and have you open up a bunch of Wellness Forum Centers throughout the country? It was my first thought after reading this book. The format of the book is a casual conversation between Pam and Glen from beginning to end. The conversational structure of the book makes it very easy to follow as the flow is natural and not too technical. I read the book in about three evenings which is fast for me. It's a great read and I recommend it to everyone. Several areas are covered: chronic disease prevention and reversal, success stories from the Wellness Institute, food politics, working with your doctor, etc.

I have read the vast majority of the health books on plant-based nutrition that have been written over the last 20 years (T Colin Campbell, John McDougall, Neal Barnard, Brenda Davis, Caldwell and Rip Esselstyn, Joel Fuhrman, Doug Lisle, Terry Shintani, John Robbins, etc.). This book belongs on the top 10 list because it really summarizes the most important things you need to know about nutrition and it's very easy to follow.

For those who don't know Pam Popper, she runs the Wellness Forum in Columbus, OH. I think this puts Pam in a totally different category vs. all the other plant-based experts listed above. Why? Because people can easily interact live with Pam and her team to learn what to eat, how to prepare the food, understand the science, and reverse their chronic conditions. The level of support provided at the Wellness Forum is much more hands-on, deeper and broader than what is typically offered by other experts. If you suffer from a chronic condition, you should not only read this book, you should also contact Pam Popper at the Wellness Forum.

CRUCIAL TO READ!
By Tina
This is the one book to read if you want to live a long and happy life! It was easy to understand and adapt to my own food sensibilities. We all wonder why we don't feel well or are packing on those extra pounds that mysteriously glued themselves to our bodies overnight. Was it Gremlins who were responsible for our weight gain or was it the consumption of too many candy bars and blobs of butter? Popper and Merzer explain everything you need to do to change your day-to-day lifestyle to ensure a higher quality existence on this planet. Merzer really makes the reading experience enjoyable with his fabulous sense of humor that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Popper is serious about her philosophy so the humor bits work well to make the dishing out of somewhat bland info were palatable. I shouldn't say bland - it's more the stuff we don't want to hear - you know, like the fact that we are needlessly killing ourselves by overeating fried foods and sugar and not paying attention to our bodies and basically poisoning ourselves because of bad habits and downright ignorance. I know this book has helped kicked me in my paunchy gut and is inspiring me to change my eating habits. We all deserve to live a healthy and fulfilling life and FOOD OVER MEDICINE gives you a strong foundation to do just that. The recipes are easy to prepare and are very tasty - and if I for one stick with this new way of looking at food I'm sure there will be far less trips to the doctor and my jeans will fit better. I highly recommend buying this book to anyone who values their life and values the lives of others they love. Buy many copies and pass them around. Your family and friends will thank you for it.
