Deleuze Beyond Badiou (Insurrections: Critical Studies in Religion, Politics, and Culture), by Clayton Crockett

First published in 1997, Alain Badiou’s Deleuze: The Clamor of Being cast the thinker as a secret philosopher of the One, compromising Deleuze’s standing among political philosophers concerned with the practical and historical aspects of existence. Clayton Crockett rehabilitates Deleuze’s position within contemporary, cutting-edge political and philosophical thought, advancing an original reading of the thinker’s major works and a constructive conception of his philosophical ontology.

Through close readings of Deleuze’s Difference and Repetition, Capitalism and Schizophrenia (with Felix Guattari), and Cinema 2, Crockett argues Deleuze is anything but the austere, quietistic, and aristocratic intellectual Badiou portrays. Instead, Crockett underscores Deleuze’s radical aesthetics and innovative scientific, political, and mathematical forms of thought. Challenging predominant orthodoxy, he also refutes the notion that Deleuze retreated from politics toward the end of his life, grounding his argument in the revolutionary political concept of the time-image developed in Cinema 2. Using Badiou’s critique as a foil, Crockett maintains the profound continuity of Deleuze’s work and builds a general interpretation of his more obscure formulations. His study also offers original readings of Badiou’s central philosophical texts, Theory of the Subject, Being and Event, and Logics of Worlds, and uses the devastating earthquake in Haiti as a test case for applying Deleuze’s thought.

Review

This book offers insightful interpretations of several of Deleuze's major works.

(Choice)

Review

Remarkably illuminating. That Crockett is able to make so crystal clear some of Deleuze's contested concepts is the result of years of patient labor over the philosopher's writings.

(Ward Blanton, University of Glasgow)

This is an interdisciplinary text of rare ability and power that takes the reader into not only a deeply considered discussion of two crucial thinkers but also carefully and skillfully explains the limits and possibilities in discussion.

(Mike Grimshaw, University of Canterbury)

The best examination so far of the vexed philosophical relationship between Badiou and Deleuze. Crockett constructs a philosophical framework that enables us to envisage the detailed and ramified terms of an engagement between two very powerful thinkers, and in so doing provides us with an indispensable text.

(Kenneth Surin, Duke University)

In this careful emancipation of Deleuze's work from the prism of Badiou's gaze, Crockett develops a coherent and original reading of Deleuze focusing on time and energetics. Beyond the perceived political failures of Capitalism and Schizophrenia, he restores the liberative potential of Deleuze's thought.

(Philip Goodchild, University of Nottingham)

transcendence from a posmodern thinker
By barryb
After a long list of postmodern neo-Marxist Hegelians, we finally come across the first postmodern thinker to posit real "transcendence", which he calls "difference". I've read Crockett before and he is more than adequate in taking up the challenge of presenting this difficult position of Deleuze. It is a difficult text and Crockett assumes some familiarity with deleuze already. This is not an intro summary. He digs into the depth of the position and the process is demanding to the reader. I had to do some additional research on wiki so that I stayed even with the text and didn't get left behind. And I feel I have a fairly good grasp of the new left philosophy. There is a realm in the external world called the "spatium". This spiritual dimension is that realm where the interplay between the corporeal and the incorporeal takes place; on the "border of sense". After the self is driven back into the unconscious and becomes the dissolved self or elastic-self; then the process can begin for "inscribing" this intensity of meaning into the extensity of external bodily reality. In this way situation is transformed into horizon-event. This difference interrogates us and coaxes us into participation: first as contraction of the excitation of the situation, then as destiny or awareness of signs through internal engagement with past encoded experiences with intensity, and finally as virtual system construction; as "event" that "cuts" into the border between the corporeal and the incorporeal. This new self transcends the 4 aspects of reason that have restricted us in the past: maintaining identity of concept, maintaining opposition of predicate, making judgment analogies and making perception resemblance. The paradox , of course, is that there is a repetition of "difference" that takes place during the repetition of sameness in the corporeal world that most people cannot transcend beyond. This is a chance for transcendence and I'm glad of it. Be ready to work at this book; prepare to move slowly through this 2013 text. Crockett is a great teacher. I'm glad I took the time to listen. 5 stars.

Authoritative assessment of the Deleuze/Badiou debate
By Wayne
Excellent summary of each philosopher's position, showing how Badiou and Hallward Out of This World: Deleuze and the Philosophy of Creationmisinterpret and misuse Deleuze's positions metaphysically and how Deleuze's position applies in the world today.

Heaven and Earth Are Flowers: Reflections on Ikebana and Buddhism, by Joan D. Stamm

In this lovely meditation on ikebana - the Japanese art of flower arranging - Joan Stamm shows us how her twin paths of Buddhist practice and artistic endeavor converge and indeed become thoroughly intertwined.

Stamm's lush, elegant voice weaves childhood memories of her mother's joy at a just-bloomed morning glory with meditations on the symbolic importance of bamboo, of pine, of the lily. She takes us with her on her travels to Japan as she learns the essential principles of ikebana, and lets us join her as she teaches flower arranging to women in a nursing home who, though they won't recall tomorrow the rules of arrangement or even the flowers' names, nonetheless partake in the joy and love that celebrates all living things, however briefly they endure. And, when Joan shows us the natural symmetry of a blossom, we find that we too have regained our balance.

Includes 16 full-color photographs of the author's original ikebana.

Beauty and soul come alive.
By Nancy S. Ayer
I am struck by this beautiful book; struck mostly by its depth, the depth of the author, and the depth of symbolism, metaphor and image behind Ikebana. I see soul represented in every one of the author's arrangements. I
found myself studying the original arrangements and trying to decide which -
if I could choose just one - was my favorite. I was struck by several
things in this book: the level of water according to the season; the inclusion of
a yellowed bamboo leaf or a brown of the Iris and canna leaves to show
impermanence, and change of seasons. Ikebana is all new to me but the
messages are not! It made me happy to see that the ancient art of
Ikebana is also willing to move into the 21 century with "Inoribana".
Flowers are the mandalas of the garden and the beauty of the soul. Heaven and Earth Are Flowers injects both into the heart of the reader and thus out into the world. Discover the beauty of your own soul amongst Stamm's arrangements and read this unique book.

Easy to read, hard to forget
By Purple Iris
Inspiring and thought-provoking, the writing reflects the beauty of the exquisite flower arrangements that illustrate this book. It is provocative and articulate, and has a personal style that warms the heart. It is a shining treasure of intelligence and insight in a sea of mediocre books on Japanese culture. This will become a must-read for anyone with an interest in traditional Japan, but it would be an ideal gift for anyone; it has something to offer all of our personal journeys.

An invitation to practice ikebana
By Lily
This beautiful book invites you to practice tha art of ikebana. As well as it is easy to read, it has some passages of depth and harmony which feed the reader's soul.
A friend who knows that I practice ikebana since eight years ago recommended Heaven and Earth are Flowers. As I read it, I was surprised to realize that most of my feelings and sensations are explained in this book. Feelings and sensations that I perceive when I work on flowers and branches.
I like also the way that Joan explains the reflexive and meditative states in which one finds meanwhile a floral arrangement is made.
Finally, I want to express my grattitude to Joan because she shares part of her life and most of her soul to the readers in this book.

"Sex is the answer to death."—Charlotte Roche

In her controversial first novel, Wetlands, which The New York Times called "a cri de coeur against the oppression of a waxed, shaved, douched and otherwise sanitized women’s world”, Roche wrote about sex and the female body in an unprecedentedly frank and intimate way. Roche's second novel, Wrecked is just as raw and powerful as her debut, but is a more mature and impressive work that deals with sex, death, fidelity, and the question of what is expected from a twenty-first century wife and mother.

"It's easier to give a blow job than to make coffee." That's what Elizabeth Kiehl, mother of seven-year-old Liza thinks to herself, after a particularly lengthy and inventive bout of sex with her husband Georg—recounted in detail over the book's first twenty pages. Elizabeth goes to great efforts to pleasure her husband in the bedroom, and also is an extremely thoughtful and caring mother to her daughter. But the perfect mother and wife act she puts on hides a painful past and a tragic rift in her psyche, which she is working through in weekly sessions with her therapist. Sex is the other tool that she uses to relax herself. Elizabeth and Georg watch porn together, and even go off on joint trips to a local brothel for threesomes with prostitutes while their daughter is at school. But is their relationship unhealthy, even tragic, or just a very modern marriage?

From Publishers Weekly
Controversial German author Roche (Wetlands) delivers a complicated take on literary erotica where sex is more than titilation. Over three days the neurotic Elizabeth Kiehl mentally and physically prepares to visit a brothel with her husband Georg. Her crippling obsessions—going to therapy, pleasing her husband sexually, being the perfect mother to her daughter Liza, and saving the environment—all stem from a car accident that killed her three brothers, who were en route to her wedding, and her hatred of the paparazzi who terrorized her family afterwards. It is hard to differentiate between Roche's potentially groundbreaking expansion of female subjectivity in fiction and what is merely included to see how much she can get away with, but it is precisely the blurring of this line which makes her work so fascinating. Although trying shock, bemuse, and perhaps even enrage, Roche also attempts to explore the multitude of contradictory pressures middle class women face in the early 21st century, seen through the sharply focused, yet irredeemably skewed, lens of a mentally ill, and therefore unreliable, narrator. Although the content may trouble many readers, Roche's particularly explicit brand of Molly Bloom-esque, serpentine inner monologue is worth a read for those who can stomach it. (May)

Review
“In this follow-up to her 2009 bestselling debut novel Wetlands, the British-born, German author Charlotte Roche is once again out to shock. . . . Wrecked is likely to become a cult classic, American Psycho by way of Catherine Millet, as Roche places domestic sex at the forefront of contemporary erotic culture.”—Financial Times

“Reading this book is like visiting another planet, but I think I should go there more often. . . . Sex is the bait with which Roche lures us into a dark and psychologically complex novel that addresses some difficult themes: the shortcomings of the women’s movement; the psychological consequences of familial breakdown and bereavement; the pressures of being a mother in this bewildering, hyper-self-conscious age. . . . I find Roche’s brand of bloody-minded emotional openness inspiring. If women’s liberation means freeing us to be more truly ourselves, we should celebrate a writer like Roche, whose voice is defiantly, shamelessly her own.”—Guardian

“Roche’s style is hauntingly disarming; beneath Elizabeth’s surface narrative lie troubling themes of personal deprecation, sexual promiscuity, and the affecting nature of familial relationships.”—Bust

“There are things in this book that could even spark a new sexual revolution.” —Stern

“Elizabeth Kiehl is a mother, wife, photographer, daughter, ex-wife (sort of), ex-wild child, confused feminist, militant atheist and survivor. . . There are moments of fascinating psychology, as well as deceptively muted visceral screams, and by the end of the book, one is not sure whether to admire, pity, or detest Elizabeth. . . For some readers, the mesmerizing if unsettling narrative might be groundbreaking.”—Kirkus Reviews

“A frank, nuanced, and gripping look at what makes a good marriage . . . The novel dispenses its ideas with disarming simplicity, but no one should let that fool them into thinking that it lacks complexity or relevance. Roche has written a book that the reader will think about long after they have finished it—something that can’t be said of most ‘literary masterpieces’.”—Frankfurter Allgemeiner Zeitung

“This isn’t a novel, it’s a manifesto—one directed primarily at women, encouraging them to free themselves from their false ideals—and, above all, to get a therapist!” —NZZ am Sonntag

“With merciless precision Roche depicts shock, pain, lust, empathy, and her revenge fantasies and suicide plans . . . A startlingly radical striptease of the soul.” —Focus

“This novel points to much more than what is explicitly on the surface . . . [Roche] turns up the dial on the daily madness of how we try to feed our kids politically correct food, worship at the altar of the environment, the prison of information that manuals and the Internet puts at our fingertips, and the way we are forced to coexist with others only in a way that puts our needs first.” —Freie Presse

“Wrecked is not just a collection of provocations, but a brilliantly drawn portrait of a young woman who has one desire above all others: to be liked by other people.”—Deutsche Presse-Agentur

"There is no contemporary author in Germany who writes as vividly and ardently about sex as Charlotte Roche."—Der Tagesspeigel

"You have to read it."—FAS

"You simply cannot fail to be affected by this book. . . . Roche's language is as sensitive as it is brutal, as laconic as it is creative."—Nurnberger Nachrichten

"While Wetlands was a book going through puberty, Wrecked is a mature book that stays true to Aristotle's definition of tragedy, creating fear and pity."—Die Zeit

"For the protagonist of Wrecked, sex is above all a way to flee the demons in her mind—but sex is by no means the reason why Roche chose to write her second and significantly more mature book."—Abendzeitung

Praise for Wetlands:

“With her jaunty dissection of the sex life and the private grooming habits of the novel’s eighteen-year-old narrator, Helen Memel, Charlotte Roche has turned the previously unspeakable into the national conversation in Germany. . . . A cri de coeur against the oppression of a waxed, shaved, douched and otherwise sanitized women’s world.”—The New York Times

"An explicit novel, often shockingly so, but also a surprisingly accomplished literary work, which evokes the voice of J. D. Salinger's The Cather in the Rye, the perversion of J.G. Ballard's Crash, and the feminist agenda of Germaine Greer's The Female Eunuch."—GRANTA

“An encyclopedia of bodily secretions and a catalog of nonstandard ends for them . . . A cautionary tale about entrusting private grooming to professional bikini waxers. . . . [As a] book that does not intend to arouse but to titillate . . . Wetlands is the epitome of the form.”—Slate

"Not since Germaine Greer's The Female Eunuch have readers and critics had such a Rohrschach test for their body issues as this year's novel Wetlands."—Bookslut

Left me feeling wrecked
By TChris
The first several pages of Wrecked are devoted to the narrator's frank and detailed description of the steps she takes to give sexual pleasure to her husband. Elizabeth Kiehl's narration is alternately clinical and erotic, and occasionally touches upon the science and psychology and politics of sex. Readers who don't approve of graphic language will want to stay far away from Wrecked.

The sex is followed by a considerably less interesting discussion of cooking, which turns into a discussion of motherhood, from Elizabeth's perspective as both the daughter of a domineering mother and as the mother of an eight-year-old girl, the product of her first marriage. This leads to the story of how Elizabeth met her current husband (Georg), which leads to an analysis of the role sex plays in a marriage, which amounts to: love is just an excuse to have sex. Filling out organ donor cards (because love is intertwined with death) is the height of their romantic relationship. Elizabeth wants to have sex with a man who isn't her husband (but only with her husband's approval), a desire that provides what passes for dramatic tension in the novel: will she or won't she?

As the title suggests, Elizabeth is a wreck. She has panic attacks. She has body issues. She has odor issues. She has control issues. She is plagued by feelings of guilt. She hates her mother. She hates her stepmother. She has a father complex. She has worms (did we really need to know that?). She is rigidly opposed to change. She is "hostile to life." She often contemplates suicide. She's ambivalent about some of her husband's kinkier desires but she's unable to say "no." She fears that her husband (and every other man she knows) is a pedophile who will sexually abuse her daughter. She is always afraid that something bad is about to happen -- with some justification, given the bad things that have happened to her. According to her therapist, her hypersexuality temporarily displaces her fear. Therapy defines her.

When she's not recounting the tragedies that have comprised her life, Elizabeth reveals every thought that passes through her mind, from the environmental impact of dishwashing to corporal punishment to gray hair and breast size and the many ways in which she and everyone she knows might die. A character with this many tribulations and odd thoughts should be interesting, but the engaging aspects of Elizabeth's stream-of-consciousness narration are too often overshadowed by her tedious nature.

As I was reading Wrecked, I was trying to work out whether Charlotte Roche meant it to be a comedy. Parts of the novel are quite funny (including Elizabeth's interaction with her desperately needed therapist, with whom she discusses -- you guessed it -- her sexual fantasies), and at least some of the humor is clearly intentional. Other bits made me laugh because they were just so over-the-top -- like deciding which partner she and Georg should choose in a brothel (because she feels a need to give Georg everything he wants) or offering to show him her worms. I give Roche credit for her humor, which is the novel's redeeming value. On the other hand, the story's most dramatic moment, recounted from Elizabeth's memory, seems contrived, created only to add tragedy to Elizabeth's life. In fact, I came to believe that it was inserted into the story just to give Elizabeth something meaningful to talk about during therapy.

As a psychological study of an extreme case, Wrecked is moderately interesting, if a little creepy. As an exaggerated commentary on therapy and therapists, Wrecked has value. As an exploration of the relationship between sex and death, or a statement about feminism, or a complaint about the unfair expectations placed upon wives and mothers, or an illustration of a child's rebellion against a parent or an indictment of monogamy and double-standards ... well, that's all been done before in novels that make those points without lecturing the reader. Perhaps I should be sympathetic to Elizabeth despite (or because of) her maddening nature, but Roche only made me feel happy to have her out of my reading life when the novel ended. I appreciated some of what Roche is trying to do, and I enjoyed some of the comedy as well as a few of the less clinical descriptions of Roche's sexual adventures, but since the novel ultimately left me feeling wrecked, I can't recommend it.

Not just about sex, about life
By Amazon Customer
Enjoyed this.
Strong, honest narrator.
Complex attitudes about marriage, sex and motherhood I suspect many women have and do not embrace or admit.
Worth the read.

Sandrine's Case, by Thomas H. Cook

Thomas H. Cook offers one of his most compelling novels ever in Sandrine's Case, in which a college professor falls in love with his wife all over again...while on trial for her murder.

Samuel Madison always wondered what Sandrine saw in him. He was a meek, stuffy doctorate student, and she a brilliant, beautiful, bohemian with limitless talents and imagination. On the surface their relationship and marriage semed perfectly tranquil: jobs at the same small, liberal arts college, a precocious young daughter, a home filled with art and literature, and trips to some of the world's most beautiful cities and towns. And then one night Sandrine is found dead in their bed and Samuel is accused of her murder.

As the truth about their often tumultuous relationship comes to light, Samuel must face a town and media convinced of his guilt, a daughter whose faith in her father has been shaken to its core, and astonishing revelations about his wife that make him fall in love with her for a second time. A searing novel about love lost and rediscovered, from one of our greatest chroniclers of the human heart.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In this slow-burning, intricate thriller from Edgar-winner Cook (The Crime of Julian Wells), Sam Madison and his wife, Sandrine, both professors at Georgia's Coburn College (he of literature, she of history) and parents of a grown daughter, appear to have a solid marriage. But below the surface there are problems, which culminate in Sandrine's death from a cocktail of Demerol and vodka. While the coroner rules the death a suicide, the police suspect foul play and soon zero in on Sam as his wife's killer. The local prosecutor is so certain of Sam's guilt that he seeks the death penalty. In the course of the murder trial, which runs from unexpected revelations on the witness stand to torrents of legalese as the attorneys jockey for power, Sam reflects on his relationship with the brilliant, beautiful, and vexing Sandrine. Through Sam's memories, Cook pulls off the tricky task of rendering Sandrine—a lover of ancient history, particularly Cleopatra, and the intricacies of language—as vividly as if she had never died. This crime novel, one of his best, builds to an unforeseen, but earned, climax. (Aug.)

From Booklist
Master plotter Cook upends the traditional linear progress of the typical mystery from crime through solution (and sometimes) trial by starting this head-scratcher at the trial itself, with the opening argument of the prosecution. We sit with college professor Samuel Madison, on trial for murdering his wife, Sandrine, also a college professor, as he thinks about what has happened to him over the past week: for example, how the first responding officer on the scene seemed much more interested in what had happened than Samuel had expected; how the people in his tiny college town all seemed to have turned against him, assuming that such a socially graceless, homely man as he certainly would have killed his beautiful, faithless wife; and how excessively well prepared the prosecution seems to be. Part of the thrill of reading this unusual mystery is that we’re confined to Samuel’s head, and he’s not saying if he did indeed murder his wife. Another fine effort from the always insightful Cook. --Connie Fletcher

Review
"A consistently engaging court procedural. . . . The real treat is Cook's tender, gradual exploration of the push and pull between Samuel and Sandrine, an unlikely pair."—People (three stars)

"Cook supplely strips the courtroom thriller down to its bones and then animates it with a warm, beating heart. . . . This is a story of the mysteries of a long marriage and of a couple who might or might not be meant for each other. Cook plays with and against the conventions of the noir mystery to craft a novel deeper and richer than the genre would seem to allow."—Columbus Dispatch

“Sandrine's Case is a story of love lost and rediscovered during the course of a murder trial. Who but Thomas H. Cook could blend love and death with such seamless elegance? He remains one of my favorite writers.”—Harlan Coben

"With Sandrine's Case Thomas H. Cook once again proves he's one of the very best. Here he uses the courtroom as a prism on the inner workings of life and relationships. It is gripping, moving and elegiac. This book shows a master at work."—Michael Connelly

"A mystery novel by Tom Cook is always something more, and unpredictable. It is very difficult to resist turning pages rapidly to discover the outcome of this disturbing case."—Joyce Carol Oates

“Often praised for the clarity of his prose and the sheer drive of his storytelling, [Cook] deserves a special citation for bravery. In Sandrine’s Case, he not only dares to write a novel with an unpleasant protagonist, but also makes him the narrator.”—New York Times Book Review

“Bravo to Cook for giving us a story that slowly grows with intensity and depth. . . . [An] insightful, cleverly nonlinear novel.”—Christian Science Monitor

"[A] wonderful genre-breaking novel. . . . Sandrine's Case is as good as anything written by Scott Turow and John Grisham."—Huntington News

“A remarkable piece of writing that sits right at the top of the genre.”—Deadly Pleasures

“A tender love story in the form of a tense courtroom drama, Sandrine's Case is mystery, metaphor, and morality wrapped together in a nifty package, a chance to observe grace (or treachery) under pressure. Thomas H. Cook’s elegant new novel offers all that great narrative pleasure. You’ll be baffled right up to the Wow of an ending. What a terrific story!”—Susan Isaacs, author of Compromising Positions and Goldberg Variations

“Who could write a gripping novel of tenderness and mercy—its subject a woman who might have decided to frame her husband for her own suspicious death? Thomas H. Cook has done just this. In his prime as a master storyteller, he goes from strength to strength.”—Jacqueline Mitchard, bestselling author of The Deep End of the Ocean

“Sandrine's Case is a heart-breaking, heart-stopping love story as well as a taut, gripping courtroom drama, woven as masterfully and diabolically as a hangman's noose. Nobody does it better than Thomas H. Cook!”—Judith Kelman, bestselling author of Summer of Storms and The First Stone

“Sandrine's Case brings to mind Body Heat and Presumed Innocent, those pinnacles of adultery, marriage and murder. Thomas H. Cook is at his best here as he grabs the reader by the throat and doesn't let go until the verdict is announced.”—Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Circle and The Red Thread

“From the compelling opening to the poignant resolution, Sandrine's Case is a hauntingly beautiful and deeply moving novel that is at its core a story of a love both complex and enduring. Ingeniously conceived and elegantly written, it throbs with the suspense and insight into the human heart that we've come to expect of Thomas H. Cook.”—Anne D. LeClaire, author of Entering Normal and The Lavender Hour

“Cook is one of the finest crime writers of modern times. . . . Told in the sparest style, Sandrine gradually reveals the web of deceit that married couples can weave around each other until it threatens to suffocate them both: horrifying but hypnotizing.”—Daily Mail (UK)

“One of the best mystery novels I’ve ever read. Cook has it all. The nuanced engaging characters, the clean and subtle plot, a perfectly imagined setting, and a slow-burn pacing that makes it impossible to stop reading. . . . Don’t miss it.”—Globe and Mail (Canada)

"Vintage Cook: different, interior, another one that resists categorization."—Providence Journal

"A marvelous tale of human nature."—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"[A] slow-burning, intricate thriller. . . . This crime novel, one of [Cook's] best, builds to an unforeseen, but earned, climax."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Compelling . . . Cook deftly explores the question of what we truly know about the people we love—and, in reflection, what we truly know about ourselves.”—January Magazine

“[Cook’s] lyrical prose, his flawless movement back and forth in time, his utterly surprising ending, and his masterful use of suspense put Sandrine’s Case at the top of my list.”—And Sometimes She Writes. . .

“Sandrine’s Case is loaded with quiet metaphor and shot through with turns of phrase that would fill a small notebook on their own. It can be read in one sitting. . . . Still, I suggest reading it slowly, taking in its nuances and perhaps even re-reading it after finishing, just to enjoy how Cook so carefully constructed it.”—Bookreporter.com

“Cook has a patented way of bringing out the deep and vulnerable heart of a character. . . . It is tenderness and kindness that mark Thomas Cook’s novels and it is evident in the beautiful Sandrine’s Case as well.”—Murder By The Book

A different take on courtroom fiction
By TChris
There are few novelists of intrigue I admire as much as Thomas Cook. Whether he's writing a spy story, a crime novel, or a courtroom drama, his approach is unconventional. Tension derives not from action but from the intense probing of his characters' lives. In Sandrine's Case, Cook uses a criminal trial to reveal not just the facts underlying a death, but the mind and soul of the accused, an unfeeling man who (his wife once said) is composed of scar tissue.

Sam Madison, an English professor at a liberal arts college in a small Georgia town, had a terrible argument with his wife Sandrine, a history professor at the same institution. He is accused of killing her and of attempting to disguise the murder as suicide. The evidence against him is circumstantial: a "sinister research history" on his computer; his role in obtaining the Demoral that killed her; the antihistamines in Sandrine's blood; a broken cup; a parody Sam wrote of noir fiction; "a silence when I should have spoken, a question I should have asked but hadn't." Sandrine had recently been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease, a condition that (according to the prosecutor) furnished Sam's motive: it was easier to kill than to face years serving as a caretaker, feeding and bathing his helpless wife. Sam fears that the jurors will despise him because he is an intellectual living a privileged life, but the most damning evidence against him are the words Sandrine spoke to her friends about Sam's detached, isolated nature. Sam is, according to Sandrine, a sociopath (or so she said in the last words she spoke to him), and he knows his "cold perhaps even haughty demeanor" is not playing well with the jury. He has good reason to fear that the trial has become a referendum on his marriage, that he will be punished for being a distant, uncaring husband.

The ultimate mystery in Sandrine's Case is not what Sam did or did not do, but whether Sam is correct in certain suspicions he begins to harbor about Sandrine. Since Sandrine's Case is told in the first person from Sam's perspective, it obviously isn't a whodunit. Sam feels enormous guilt, but for much of the novel his precise role in Sandrine's death is unclear. Was he possessed, after twenty years of sharing a home with his wife and daughter, to murder Sandrine, despite his belief that "no man had ever been loved by a more worthy woman"? As Sam slowly disintegrates -- thinking about the testimony of the witnesses at his trial, reliving the police interrogations, recalling (in bits and pieces) his life with Sandrine -- he begins, perhaps for the first time, to understand himself, to come to terms with his deep sense of failure, a judgment he "put on everyone else," particularly Sandrine, because he feared to judge himself. The testimony of witnesses teaches Sam what Sandrine really thought of him, and seeing himself through Sandrine's eyes is a revelatory experience.

Sam describes Sandrine's academic writing as "graceful and carefully measured," a description that applies equally to Cook's prose. Sam, who laments "what a low culture we have now," has never read a crime novel (unless you count Crime and Punishment or other works of literary genius). If he were to do so, Sandrine's Case would be a good place to start. Cook's insight into his characters and his elegant prose are undeniably the stuff of quality literature, yet he (unlike Sam, whose failed novel became more academic with each rewrite) never fails to tell a compelling story. There might be more courtroom theatrics in a Grisham novel, but there is more bare honesty, more heart, in Sandrine's Case than you'll find in a dozen Grishams. It is a strangely redemptive, life-affirming story about death, a decidedly different take on courtroom fiction, but in its own quiet way, a small masterpiece.

A simple premise made of extremely complex layers and gorgeous prose
By Bookreporter
Thomas H. Cook is an author's author. He has amassed an enviable bibliography comprised of books that prove his love of language and his ability to quietly and surgically slice into lives and personalities. While his novels are considered to fall under the classification of crime fiction, he defies some of the elements of that genre while never eschewing a literary tone. It is telling that after more than three decades and close to 30 books, Cook's latest effort features some of his best prose.

SANDRINE'S CASE is built upon a relatively simple premise constructed with extremely complex layers. A husband calls the police, stating that he has just arrived at home and found his wife dead, the victim of an apparent suicide. After an investigation, though, the husband is charged with first-degree murder and goes on trial. Have we seen this before? Absolutely, but the plot contains several fascinating variations on this theme. The husband and wife in question are Sandrine and Samuel Madison, professors at a small and undistinguished college for over two decades. Sandrine is popular with the faculty and students and, indeed, with the townspeople of Coburn, a small and closely held city less than a hundred miles from Atlanta.

Samuel is not especially liked or likable; one gets this impression almost from the beginning of the book, which is narrated in the first person by Samuel himself. It is but one example of Cook's quiet genius that the reader can get the sense almost immediately that Samuel was not always so unlikable, and indeed we eventually learn that such is the case as the story unfolds over 10 days. Samuel has a defense attorney who is self-styled as "the smartest Jew lawyer in Coburn County," but seems to think that his own client might be guilty of the crime with which he is charged. Sandrine had reason to commit suicide, which interestingly enough is part of the alleged motive that Samuel supposedly had for murdering her.

As the book proceeds, one wonders what the deceased --- outgoing, intelligent, stunningly beautiful, capable of spouting obscure yet brilliant quotations while creating many of her own --- saw in her cold fish husband, whom she labelled a sociopath on the night of her death. We eventually learn exactly what it was that attracted Sandrine to Samuel, who looks down on practically everyone around him with a casual coldness that had invaded his home as well.

Still, Samuel is not without redeeming social value. One of his few acquaintances ("friend" would be too strong a word) is a next-door neighbor who owes much to Samuel, a debt that can never be truly repaid as a result of an impulsive, selfless, and yes, brave act that Samuel committed years before. And then there is Alexandria, Sandrine and Samuel's daughter, who seems to have taken the best of her mother's personality but is a step away from estrangement from her father. Such a thing perhaps would be more than he could bear, yet the danger of it arises from much more than the murder charges that have been brought against him; if he is exonerated, it still may not save him at home.

SANDRINE'S CASE is loaded with quiet metaphor and shot through with turns of phrase that would fill a small notebook on their own. It can be read in one sitting, though you will be tempted to rush through it. Still, I suggest reading it slowly, taking in its nuances and perhaps even re-reading it after finishing, just to enjoy how Cook so carefully constructed it.

"You're the victim in this case, Sam. Don't forget that."
By Fairbanks Reader - Bonnie Brody
Sandrine's Case by Thomas Cook is an interesting novel about the death of a 46 year-old woman named Sandrine. Was it suicide or was she murdered by her husband Sam? The novel's structure is in the form of a courtroom drama and takes place on each day of the trial with each witness testifying for or against the accused. During the course of the trial, Sam reminisces about Sandrine and their original meeting and love affair, the early days of their marriage and Sandrine's personality. He also considers the last days of her life and the awful fight they had before she died.

Sandrine loved words and was an astute grammarian. She had a tender side and originally had a dream of opening a school for poor children in Africa. During the course of years, her dreams died as she taught at Coburn College, a small liberal arts college in Georgia, the same school where Sam taught.

While the trial is taking place, Sam is asked to resign his tenured professorship because of the negative publicity his trial will bring the college. If he doesn't resign, the president is prepared to fire him.

I found the book rather long and it meandered just a bit too much for me to be completely vested in it. I found the characters interesting but not to the point of wanting to pick the book up all the time. I enjoyed the metaphors, quotes from other authors and the characterization of Sandrine. She came alive more than any other character. I have read other books by Thomas Cook and have loved them. This is not one of his strongest novels.

Great addition to our library
By Henrietta
This is a hefty hardcover book which would be quite expensive new. I love the stories I've looked over and they are divided by subject (how perfect!). They can work for family lessons or for talks, or personal reading. I love that they include a ribbon bookmark like in the scriptures.

Life On The Edge, by Michael Gross

Can life exist in the Antarctic ice, in the deep subsurface, in dilute sulfuric acid, in hot springs-even on Mars? What degree of high or low temperature, pressure, or salt concentration can living cells tolerate? In recent years, scientists have discovered many single-cell creatures that exist in-in fact, are perfectly adapted to-extreme environments that were considered uninhabitable just one or two decades ago. In Life on the Edge, author Michael Gross explores how microorganisms adapt to their hostile environments and how they affect our current definition of the "normal" conditions for life. He also describes the vast implications of these extremophiles and other amazing creatures-from potential breakthroughs in medicine and biotechnology to the search for life elsewhere in the universe.

From Booklist
The discovery of "extremophilic" life that thrives in hot, cold, pressurized, desiccated, and acidic environments has necessitated a rethinking of elemental biology and revived expectations about extraterrestrial life existing in the solar system. Gross, a biochemist, explains the adaptiveness of life to stress in terms of the resilience of the cell. It can respond to the huge range of nature's insults, thanks to a first-aid kit that deploys various proteins in response to cold or heat. Gross examines those proteins with the aid of molecular diagrams and examples of organisms from such places as Antarctica and the Dead Sea before proceeding to the fascinating question of life's origins. Quite possibly, extremophilic microbes, named archaebacteria, are the most ancient life-forms. Their RNA protein has revealed some unusual properties that Gross describes as nontechnically as possible. Gross closes with thoughts on the prospect of finding extremophiles on Mars. The book constitutes an accessible introduction to an exciting outpost on the scientific frontier. Gilbert Taylor

This book is very detailed in a molecular + chemical way
By A Customer
I had to read this book for a college biology class and it was not an easy read. It is very detailed in explaing the extreme enviorments in which these creatures live, beacause it gets down to the chemical and molecular make-up of everything. You really need a biology dictionary to go with it.

ArchaeaSo What?
By Worldreels
Gross starts out explaining the chemosynthesis that supports deep sea bacteria, archaea, very well. His extreme life bacteria are interesting, shedding light on life prior to the earth's oxygen atmosphere, but then what? The book becomes repetitive. Yes, some life forms can endure extreme heat, pressure, cold and drought and he explains all of this perfectly. This all lends support to theories of possible bacterial life on other planets and to what was the first forms of life on earth. Beyond that it is only a treatise for graduate students seeking a higher degree. It is a lot of new words-not for the general reader.
