About the Author
William R. LaFleur received his PhD from the University of Chicago, where he studied with Joseph Kitagawa and Mircea Eliade. Over the course of his career, LaFleur taught at Princeton University, UCLA, Sophia University, Tokyo, and at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was the E. Dale Saunders Professor of Japanese Studies. In addition to his work on Buddhist cosmology and the "mind" of medieval Japan, he was a gifted translator and interpreter of poetry and published two volumes on the medieval monk-poet Saigyo. He was deeply interested in Zen, especially as a resource for contemporary thought. He wrote and edited several books and essays, introducing to Western readers the work of the thirteenth-century Zen master Dogen, the Kyoto-school figure Masao Abe, and the twentieth-century philosopher and cultural historian Watsuji Tetsuro. In 1989, he became the first non-Japanese to win the Watsuji Tetsuro Cultural Prize. In his later career, while continuing to study medieval Japanese religion and literature, he produced pioneering studies of Japanese bioethics, highlighting contrasts with Western approaches to such issues as abortion, organ transplants, and medical definitions of death. Altogether, he wrote or edited nine books. He passed away in 2010.

The Japanese Version of Chuang Tzu

Bill LaFleur presents us with a wonderful account of the poetry of an important Japanese poet. It reminds me a little bit of Thomas Merton�s draw towards writing poetry while in a monastery. Saigyo lived a very difficult life during some really horrific times in Japanese history. It was a challenge to truly detach himself from the occurrences of the daily struggle of life during his time. He struggled in his poetry with inner dilemmas that we all face. Issues surrounding sex and time spent worrying somewhat about his earlier years spent as a warrior. Saigyo believed in fusing poetry with the path of the Buddha in a life of action, or truly sincere practice. The experiment would encompass a lifetime of this monk, and the outcomes of his story are left for interpretation for us lucky readers. He had to detach himself from relationships with those who aspired to be poets, but who did not participate in actualizing their works in their daily lives. Saigyo�s style is eerily reminiscent of the Chinese Taoist master Chuang Tzu in his prose and approach, and I suppose I�ll end this review with a quick poem by him:
�The moon, like you,
Is far away from me, but it�s our sole memento:
If you look and recall our past through it,
We can be one mind.�

The existential struggles of a poet-warrior turned Buddhist monk...

Saigyo was a very interesting character, and a wonderful poet, of early medieval Japan (1118-1190). He was born into a warrior family, and was raised within the warrior ethos, which Saigyo fully bought into as a young man. Saigyo, at eighteen, became a captain of the imperial guard, and spent time in the inner circles of two "retired" Japanese emperors. He was well acquainted, therefore, with the luxuries and decadence of palace life.

At some point Saigyo became disillusioned with palace life and its contradictions, as well as its warrior ethos, and he "left the world" to become a Buddhist monk. He spent the rest of his life as a wandering hermit, practicing his Buddhism, attempting to cleanse himself of his inherited karma, and writing beautiful poetry about his inner struggles, the beauty of nature (particularly cherry blossoms and the moon), and the distorted ethos of the "secular" world, which, at the time Saigyo lived, was producing a period of chaos and violence in Japan. Saigyo's poetry is deeply religious, informed by his understanding of Buddhist doctrine, and filtered through his own personal religious experience.

Saigyo's poems are not dry summaries of Buddhist doctrine, but are deeply personal reflections on his attempts to actually live a life in accordance with Buddhist principles. We often see Saigyo struggling to free himself from his karma, and the passions of his previous life. For example, it is clear that many of Saigyo's poems are about a "beloved" that he left behind when he left palace life, like this one: "That night when we met / to make love in my dreams, I willed / to be a never-awakened one / though it's said that / everlasting night's a miserable fate" (123).

Saigyo is also a critic of the worldly values that he left behind (what we might call 'ideology'). Like all genuine religious conversions, Saigyo's conversion was at the same time a conversion in values, and his intimate knowledge of palace life allowed him to see through the hypocrisies of worldly, secular values. Saigyo has some beautiful poems expressing the Buddhist dialectic of losing and gaining the self: "So loath to lose / what maybe should be loathed: / one's place in the world; / we maybe rescue best the self / by simply throwing it away" (12). And another: "So then, it's the one / who has thrown his self away / who is thought the loser? / But he who cannot lose self / is the one who is really lost" (29). One sees here the reversal of values: what the world values most highly is seen to be inherently valueless, while what the world despises is precisely what is most valuable.

William LaFleur's book on Saigyo is excellent. The first half is a short biography of Saigyo which also places Saigyo within his historical context, interspersed with Saigyo's poems, along with LaFleur's comments on those poems. The second half (slightly more than half the book in terms of pages) is a collection of translations of Saigyo's poems. I do not read Japanese so I cannot comment much on the translations other than to say they are beautiful. They are genuinely poetic translations, and it definitely feels as if you are reading actual poetry, and not summaries or glosses.

The only complaint I had with the book, and the only reason I decided to dock it one star, is that it is too short! I wish that LaFleur had written a book at least twice as long as this, and if I had my way, it would have been ten times as long. I could have read hundreds and hundreds of pages of LaFleur discussing Saigyo's poetry. LaFleur always has interesting comments to offer on the poems that he does discuss. But in an effort not to be selfish I will try not to complain, and simply be appreciative for what I have. I highly recommend this work to anyone with even a passing interest in Japanese poetry, Japanese Buddhism, or Japanese history and culture, or anyone struggling to live a spiritual life in a complex world.
