Jewelweed: A Novel, by David Rhodes

From a masterful storyteller, comes a Midwestern epic that illuminates the majestic in the commonplace.

When David Rhodes burst onto the American literary scene in the 1970s, he was hailed as “a brilliant visionary” (John Gardner), and compared to Sherwood Anderson and Marilynne Robinson. In Driftless, his “most accomplished work yet” (Joseph Kanon), Rhodes brought Words, WI, to life in a way that resonated with readers across the country. Now with Jewelweed, this beloved author returns to the same out-of-the-way hamlet and introduces a cast of characters who all find themselves charged with overcoming the burdens left by the past, sometimes with the help of peach preserves or pie.

After serving time for a dubious conviction, Blake Bookchester is paroled and returns home. The story of Blake’s hometown is one of challenge, change, and redemption, of outsiders and of limitations, and simultaneously one of supernatural happenings and of great love. Each of Rhodes’s characters—flawed, deeply human, and ultimately universal—approach the future with a combination of hope and trepidation, increasingly mindful of the importance of community to their individual lives. Rich with a sense of empathy and wonder, Jewelweed offers a vision in which the ordinary becomes mythical.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Rhodes continues the story of Words, Wisconsin, last visited in Driftless (2008), in this rhapsodic, many-faceted novel of profound dilemmas, survival, and gratitude. Happily married Reverend Winnie Helm is glad that her brainy, sensitive son, August, who has a pet bat named Milton, has finally made a friend, Ivan, the misfit son of Danielle, who struggles alone to support him. Amy, married to a wealthy contractor and running a household embracing four generations, needs help caring for her son, Kevin, who has cystic fibrosis. Nate, a truck driver with a passion for fresh, local food, worries about his son, Blake, who is finally getting out of prison. And everyone wonders about the mysterious Wild Boy. Rhodes portrays his smart, searching, kind characters with extraordinary dimension as each wrestles with what it means to be good and do good. As Winnie questions the rigidity of the church, Blake reads Spinoza, and Danielle faces her fears, neighbors come together in new configurations of understanding and giving. And all find an antidote to sorrow and pain in nature, from the teeming life of a pond to the splendor of jewelweed, a wildflower with a name that perfectly encapsulates Rhodes’ vision of the glory of the ordinary in this refulgent hymn to the earth, “psychic strength,” hard work, integrity, and love. --Donna Seaman

Review
"[A] rhapsodic, many-faceted novel of profound dilemmas, survival, and gratitude.... Rhodes portrays his smart, searching, kind characters with extraordinary dimension as each wrestles with what it means to be good and do good." —Booklist (STARRED REVIEW)

“Jewelweed is a novel of forgiveness, a generous ode to the spirit’s indefatigable longing for love.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune

"Brave and inspiring.... Rhodes also has important things to say about humble, hardworking Americans at odds with contemporary American culture, which he finds predatory, corporate, and soulless. An impressive and emotionally gratifying novel; highly recommended for fans of literary fiction." —Library Journal

"Masterful storytelling.... The characters in Driftless and Jewelweed are rendered with such care and precision that this little known region of the Midwest becomes dazzlingly alive. At the same time, Rhodes' decision to publish again marks a welcome return of a master storyteller of real people who live in our small towns." —Chicago Tribune Printers Row Journal

"A benevolent sort of rural American magical realism.... profound." —Publishers Weekly

“I liked Driftless, but his emotionally rich new novel, Jewelweed, a sequel of sorts, is even better. The novel emits frequent solar flares of surprise and wonder.” —Cleveland Plain Dealer

"A master of nuance, Rhodes picks up on those 'inaudible rhythms' that drive human actions: fear, regret, friendship, yearning, and a desire for forgiveness." —Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

“[A] deeply moving meditation on the resonance of each individual life on a small Wisconsin town.” —Wisconsin State Journal

“Jewelweed is another book that all Iowa should read." —Iowa Press-Citizen

“A damn fine novel—one of the best kinds—where ordinary people living ordinary lives are drawn by the deft and lyrical touch of the author in such an achingly rich way, one quietly marvels.” —Sheryl Cotleur, Copperfield’s Books

“Rhodes describes the natural world and his characters’ inner lives with equal passion, creating an ensemble as natural to its landscape as the trees. Jewelweed is a remarkable piece of storytelling, soul-felt and deeply moving.” —Mark LaFramboise, Politics & Prose Bookstore

“David Rhodes takes seemingly mundane events, and makes them magic. The everyday is made spectacular through his telling.” —Jack Hannert, Brilliant Books

“From philosophical prison inmates to childhood-haunted truckers, Rhodes’s mélange of characters feels so real, you’d swear you lived among them.” —Emily Crowe, The Odyssey Bookshop

“With Jewelweed, David Rhodes has once more produced a moving, deeply thoughtful novel, of poor people doing difficult things, often against their best interests. He is the same writer, maybe better, as the author of Driftless.” —Paul Ingram, Prairie Lights Books

From the Inside Flap
When David Rhodes burst onto the American literary scene in the seventies, he was hailed as a “brilliant visionary” (John Gardner), and compared to Sherwood Anderson. With Driftless, “the best work of fiction to come out of the Midwest in many years” (Alan Cheuse), Rhodes brought Words, Wisconsin, to life in a way that resonated with readers across America. Now, with Jewelweed, this beloved author returns to the Driftless Region, and introduces a cast of characters who all find themselves struggling to find a new sense of belonging in the present moment—sometimes with the help of peach preserves or mashed potato pie.

After serving time for a conviction, Blake Bookchester returns home, enthralled by the philosophy of Spinoza and yearning for the woman he loves. Having agitated for his release, Reverend Winifred Helm slowly comes to understand that she is no longer fulfilled by the ministry. Winnie’s precocious son, August, and his best friend, Ivan, befriend a hermit and roam the woods in search of the elusive Wild Boy. And Danielle Workhouse, Ivan’s single mother and Blake’s former lover, struggles to do right by her son. These and other inhabitants of Words—all flawed, deeply human, and ultimately universal—approach the future with a combination of hope and trepidation, increasingly mindful of the importance of community to their individual lives.

Rich with a sense of empathy and wonder, Jewelweed offers a vision in which the ordinary becomes mythical, and the seemingly mundane is transformed into revelatory beauty.

As a young man, David Rhodes worked in fields, hospitals, and factories across Iowa. After receiving an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he published three acclaimed novels: The Last Fair Deal Going Down (1972), The Easter House (1974), and Rock Island Line (1975). In 1976, a motorcycle accident left him partially paralyzed. In 2008, Rhodes returned to the literary scene with Driftless, a novel that was hailed as “the best work of fiction to come out of the Midwest in many years” (Alan Cheuse). Following the publication of Driftless, Rhodes was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2010, to support the writing of Jewelweed. He lives with his wife, Edna, in Wisconsin.

The best of life. A son, a father and life's pain blended with Love
By DeNisa Howe
This emotion stitched writing lived in my heart throughout the whole book. It reminded me of a patchwork quilt. It was sewn together by friends, family and a few visitors with a certain pattern of which, it does not stick to. And yet they with love, compassion, humor and acceptance make it work anyway. This story is the lives of magnificent authentic characters that became real to me. I loved them, hated a few, smiled and desperately wanted to help many and long for their return. The quilt sewn and finished is unique in its excellence, which is actually the flaws.
A father doing his best, deeply feels his emotions without the knowledge of what to do. He has questions, uncertainties and hope. A son with mistakes directed by love of another and a ten year pause in his life and his families. The time has come for him to blend back in and what? His own fears push speed bumps in the middle of his road to his new beginning. Memories guide each of the characters in different directions that we all can relate to, understand and bond us all together.
One of the best reads I have had this year. I shall follow this author and the unique real life in the voice on paper. The stitched quilt of life will remain with me many years and I will probably revisit this writing many times. The author's voice brings you humanity and all that comes with it.
I won this book via good reads first readers and feel very blessed to have been able to slip in between the pages of such a exceptional written world.

Jewelweed....Rhodes has me in his life...
By Nolan Winkler
David Rhodes has me in his life whether or no he wants me. Don't know the man personally, but his two recent books, DRIFTLESS and now JEWELWEED have been two of the best, most beautifully written novels I have read in years. He has made his characters in and around a small town in Wisconsin come to life brilliantly. I cared about each one as if family.

I just finished reading another novel by another author who won a Pulitzer for it. It was wonderful, but I kept saying to my husband that if she won a Pulitzer for this, certainly David Rhodes is next! He agreed, having read both the above novels also.

Buy them new (authors do need money, you know), read them and you will be in Rhodes life, too, awaiting his next.

Review of Jewelweed
By Lydia
I started Jewelweed by David Rhodes right in the middle of a move from central Illinois to the beautiful island of Oahu. The result was that I read this book slowly, more slowly than usual for me. It turned out being a marvelous thing. Why? Because I got to chew over the developments and think them through and good grief, this was an epic story and then some.

Jewelweed is the name of a small, weed-like plant that is best left unpicked. This theme is constant throughout Rhodes' story, and with deft, beautiful, lyrical writing, each character is introduced and made to seem as if they are the most important one in the story. What I also really appreciated about this book was the insertion of some really quirky, believable characters. From the friendship of Ivan and August, the inclusion of Kevin, the hermit Lester, the "Wild Boy," Wally and the family, to Blake and Danielle's history and future, there is a diverse, colorful, wonderful set of characters that keep the story moving and remind us of how connected we all are.

I finished reading Jewelweed with a sense of regret and satisfaction, all rolled into one feeling. I was sorry to be saying goodbye, and honestly, a bit surprised when the story finished and the next page showed the acknowledgments. The story seemed as if it would never come to an end, in a good way, and it was a shock to my system to remember that even the best of stories do come to an end.

I'll be looking for more books by David Rhodes, that's for certain. I may not be reintroduced into this same world, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to recapture that feeling of wonder and experience the awakening of my imagination in a similar way.

More for Helen of Troy, by Simon Mundy

More for Helen of Troy, Simon Mundy's new collection of poems from Seren, is suffused with the atmosphere of the landscapes that inspire him, the lush countryside of Powys, and a number of islands all over the world:Genada, Jamaica, Shetland, Italy. It is also deeply involved with many questions of desire: for the ideal of a beautiful woman, as 'Mermaid'; for the hope of a good state, as in 'The New Senedd, Cardiff' for the vision of a pristine country and seaside, as in 'Radnor Songs' and 'Aspects of Sea'. The tension between all these ideals, between lofty aims and inevitable disappointments, come together in the main title sequence, where an entire society must scheme and suffer for the allure of Helen. Helen is also emblematic: both a legendary figure and a imago for women from all times: pursued, desired, lonely, restless, she haunts the imagination of the poet. Sometimes keenly satirical, as in 'Society Haiku', and often poignantly lyrical as in 'Translated Daughter', these poems are both pointed and enjoyable.

Review
“If I had to compare this book to a physical object, it would be a box of chocolates. But not fluffy, easy chocolates – I’m not talking Russell Stover, here. I’m talking complex chocolates, probably with liqueur in them. The kind you get from the tiny chocolate shop housed in a barn that you drive a bunch out of your way to go taste. Each chocolate is filled with nuance and undertone, with complex flavors with which you need to spend time. These kinds of chocolates are the kind you need to eat slowly, break apart, analyze. Enjoy one at a time.”

Major commentators examine the many roles sex plays in our lives, including Jonathan Lethem, who looks back on his first experience of being a young artist in a room with “Live Nude Models.” Rachel Swan’s “Sex by Numbers” does some data crunching on polyamory, which turns out to be one of the fastest growing relationship styles. “Very Legal” is a surprising survey of senior sex by Alex Morris, and Melissa Gira Grant’s “Happy Hookers” is an insider look at the normalization of prostitution.

Judged by the incomparable Dr. Carol Queen, this stunning collection of sex-smart essays stirs the heart and the most important sex organ of all—the brain. From bisexuality to feminist BDSM and better vibrators, condoms in porn and Tim Tebow’s virginity, Best Sex Writing 2013 offers the smartest views on contemporary sexual culture.

10 Stars makes more sense.....
By David L. Houston
It's difficult to overstate the quality of this book. I've followed the series for some time now, using one edition as a required text in a class on Sex, Gender & Culture. This is a wonderful collection of real writing. We're not talking about erotica or titillation (though t times, honestly, some of that happens in the best way possible). What we have in this book (and, I think, all it's predecessors) is a portrait of sex and sexuality, told in a special way, presented in a perspective that is unique and enduring.

We can laugh out loud at Andy Isaacson's story of growing up and vibrators. Rachel Swan's Sex By Numbers is one of the more cogent, honest pieces about the realities of polyamory I've read. Aging in retirement and the amusing (thought annoying) preponderance of social rules highlights the chapter by Alex Morris. Bisexuality - frequently overlooked - is explored through pain in a chapter by Seth Fischer. I am drawn back to the haunting sound of 'Nowhere Man' by the doubt and fear conveyed in "Rest Stop Confidential". Again we find polyamory, and how this seemingly open approach can become normative in a chapter by Nicholas Garnett. Jon Pressick's sex positivity is refreshing. Rachel Kramer Bussel's own "Baby Talk" explores deep connections and sharing. Lori Selke's words are a testimonial to personal growth. Patrick Califia describes a perfect scene with the precision of a Julia Child. Madison Young's dilemma as a mom and a feminist jumps out at us. We could be that person. Carol Queen is Lazarus-like in the retrospective on past loves. There is agency, suffocation, safety, politics and, oh yes, porn. Every chapter is powerful and wonderful. It's a long list.

For me, though, Julia Serano really is the cherry to be picked in her "Cherry Picking". Her words describe more than simply sex, they embody transformation as both fear and power. She lands on the idea of orgasm with perfection, following her transition, achieving a "sexual state at least twenty times more intense than any boy orgasm I had ever had." It is here I find the power of this book, this series. It is personal.

Writing about sex can seem to take on many forms. We have, of course, the erotic. Commodified to absurd levels, erotica runs a gamut from bad to priceless. There is the pontification: the authors so full of themselves and what they feel is "real" sex that that we mere mortals had best read their tome. Let's not forget the clinical - that factual, dry, absent volume of stats and facts. Too many of the offerings in these genres seem to miss the mark. It's not common to find erotica that speaks to us as though we were having a conversation. It's rare to find sex modeled in a way that makes it accessible (my list has about 10 entries). Clinical is good, but where is everyone?

And here it is that Best Sex Writing really shines. Yes, the writing is absolutely super, the ideas impress, amaze, stir, sadden, delight, mystify, beckon and illuminate. But underneath it all, behind the layer of ink on paper or pixel on screen, we find real people sharing real experiences and perspectives with us. This deeply humanizing approach calls me back, and my hope is that this series continues to open us up.

Wonderful tour of a lot of interesting places
By Dan E. Nicholas
Best Sex Writing 2013--The State of Today's Sexual Culture, by Rachel Bussel & Carol Queen

I've met both these editors, attended the book talk last year when Susie Bright was guest judge, tale picker. Taking a tour with the minds and hearts of these two editors Bussel and Queen and their 20 writers is like getting out. As in: Get out much? I was able to tour wildly differing worlds, places where sexuality takes the human soul. Tim Tebow's Celibacy (Jon Pressick's Holy F___: The Fourth and Long Virgin) was dear; as was a severely rocky polyamory road laid down by Nicholas Garnett in When on Fire Island...A Polyamorous Disaster; or the chief editor's own Age Play cherry popping evening. The experience of being asked to do her best Mommy with a grown up naked man friend one night opened up her own best heart to her own best self. Nice. And scary. Insiya Ansari's honest telling of God in her bedroom, her Sex By Any Other Name on trying to wait to have Real P in the V Sex until after marriage: lived this one so during my Baptist years. Honest, painful writing here that takes us all back; and forward.

Twenty stories in all. Every one non fiction. What I found super about the Bussel collection in this 6th in a series (IPPY award winner each time) is that she takes you every year to places with her writers you'll need five life times to see. This lady puts it out. As in 40+ anthologies she has published while getting publishing a hundred more. Good erotica is great when you can find it; but non-fiction sex writing has always impacted me the most as it is almost like a photograph in it's unnice take on untouched reality.

When I tour occasional porn I always end up coming back to being a word guy. This book will make you a word person more than an image person maybe because it is so full of different strokes that actually happened in the real world. I ran out an bought this book because a Joan Price, a writer friend, promised me tears if I would read Carol Queen's piece on death and the bonk. (Ghosts: All My Men Are Dead). Loved it--beautiful last paragraph--but no tears. And then I learned in reviews here that I'd be likely bored with Jonathan Lethem's Live Nude Models about art and naked ladies in a non-sexual setting? It was actually my favorite.

And that's the point. It's like the gist of that the age-old put down: You don't get out much do you? I'd recommend this book for folks who'd like to, get out. It's for anybody who loves the human soul and remains mystified how something so earthy and messy as human sexuality keeps hauling our collected behinds up towards heaven. Which is about as getting out as you can get, right? Buy this book.

Oh, and by the way, when I met this editor lady for the first time in Santa Cruz last year, when she gave a book talk with Susie Bright, she looked pretty but oh so quiet and reserved; so like the librarian who you would never suspect as a wonderfully nasty girl with a pen. Maybe it's just the glasses. But oh my, double my. Was I wrong.

How wonderful it is to me that young folk like Bussel are taking up the work of writing about the whole sex thing for folks like the more seasoned Carol Queen and even Susie Bright. What work in sex writing they helped kick start years back. Indeed, I like living the world all our writer heroes have changed and ushered in where we can now talk about these things which are so important to all of us.

Personal Essays Rule Sex Writing in 2012
By TammyJo Eckhart
I've read my fair share of essays, studies, and opinions about human sexuality over the years as a historian of gender and sexuality, an alternative sex educator, and just as a woman trying to be more aware of the world around me. This year we have another installment of Rachel Kramer Bussel's "Best Sex Writing" series with 20 essays in one volume.

The majority of these are personal essays that look back on particular events or periods of the author's life such as Jonathan Lethem's recounting of how artist endeavors focused on the human body didn't change his horny teens years in "Live Nude Models" or "Sex by Any Other Name" from Insiya Ansari that examines a conservative upbringing and the realities of one woman's teen and young adult years. The personal account is particularly useful for examining sexuality because how can the reader simply discount your own personal reflections. However such biographies can also be seen as merely one person's experience.

However there are other types of articles collected here ranging from business stories, discussion of studies on social trends, political commentary, and my favorite, historical accounts. Of all of these I found my own deepest connection with Lori Selke's "Dear John" that looks at the disappointment an experienced BDSMers of decades can feel as the Scene has been trending quite differently than what we remember and not always in ways us old folks agree with.

Over all there is something for almost everyone and the only thing I really had to say by the end was in the form of this question: How were the essays chosen? I'd be thrilled if that had been addressed in the introduction.

Leadership Transformed: How Ordinary Managers Become Extraordinary Leaders, by Peter Fuda

How does a good manager become a great leader? Ask around in business circles and you’ll get a thousand different answers. But now, internationally renowned leadership expert Dr. Peter Fuda has created a single, coherent roadmap for leadership effectiveness in Leadership Transformed.

After more than a decade’s research and practice, Dr. Fuda shares the seven common themes that have enabled hundreds of CEOs around the world to transform themselves into highly effective leaders, and transform the performance of their organizations as well. Through his work, Dr. Fuda discovered that the best way to elicit deep and broad discussion of the seven leadership themes—and to describe the CEOs’ mastery of what they had learned—was through metaphor.

Fire—motivational forces that initiate and sustain transformation efforts.

Snowball—mutual accountability, and the consequent momentum that occurs when a critical mass of leaders commit to shared leadership principles.

Master Chef—leadership frameworks, tools, and strategies that can be “artfully” deployed.

Coach—how a “coaching staff” can collectively help leaders achieve their aspirations.

Mask—leaders can shed the heavy burden of wearing a mask in favor of a more congruent “best self.”

Movie—leaders can develop critical capabilities of self-awareness and reflection.

Russian Dolls—how a leader’s personal journey can align with the journeys of his or her colleagues and organization.

Translating [Fuda’s] metaphors into substantive change isn’t easy—it requires humility and a willingness to understand how others view you—but the payoff can be life-changing." —Success Magazine

Entertaining, informing and thought-provoking
By John Nicolas Wilkinson
For me reading `Leadership Transformed', a new book by Dr. Peter Fuda, was a rare pleasure. I'd strongly recommend it to others.

It did two things that most books of its genre (business, leadership, self-help etc.) usually fail to do; it kept me interested throughout its 190 pages, eagerly moving through the chapters as I would a good novel; and it made me think, think deeply about the both the specific content of the book and the context in which it applies.

Why was it a `page turner'?

Many business books contain one fundamental maxim, which is repeated in several guises. These books can often be summarized in one phrase - do this, or don't do that. I quickly get bored with them. It's like different dressings on the same house salad. Peter Fuda provides a much richer and more fulfilling experience as he explains the 7 metaphors for Leadership Transformation that emerged from his research. Each is sufficiently independent to merit separate attention, whilst they are sufficiently complementary and interrelated that they must be considered as a whole. So the book provides a perfect 7 course tasting menu. It's also fun to read. It's jargon free and built upon meaningful personal anecdotes from the author and his research subjects. At times it has a `reality TV' feel as we retrospectively share their experiences.

Why did it make me think?

In terms of the content, I considered each of the metaphors and how they have, or may in the future, apply to me. I'm going to try the exercises that are offered on the PeterFuda.com blog to learn more. I also thought about the attributes that underpin the `transformed' versions of the leaders who are profiled. I saw these as authenticity, humility, an openness to feedback, self-awareness and an abiding commitment. There are several mentions of spirituality in the book and this set of attributes certainly describes someone who is at peace with themselves or `comfortable in their own skin' as Fuda puts it.

Most of the changes described corrected for an absence of (or was it just the underuse of?) these attributes. Which got me to think about the context. What had caused these successful executives to adopt behaviors that were undermining their effectiveness - to appear to be inauthentic, unaware, closed, and driven by fear? To what extent were those the pressures of society in general, the expectations of business world, the culture of the particular companies in which they worked, or the prior experiences of the individuals themselves? I guess that the "Russian Doll" metaphor provides the answer - some of all of the above.

Good common sense advice. More difficult to apply in reality
By J Powell
In an age where so many managers just don't "get it", and I fear transitional generations are only learning the bad behavior of "intimidation and bullying" management styles, this book can be an eye opener, or at least the beginning steps on a transforming journey of introspection.

I like the brevity of the chapters and the metaphors, and they illustrate real areas of needed focus, however, the author leaves the bulk of the work and figuring out what that work might be, to the reader.

In a broad sense (and I've been there recently) there needs to be a lot of self-honesty and reflection.
Another book that came to mind while reading this was "The Power of Resilience" and how to change "negative scripts". This dovetails nicely with the "film metaphor" of "considering how your life might resemble the movie "Groundhog day" and perpetuating reality.

This book provides a nice and brief framework for laying out a road map for change.

A unique and powerful approach to transforming your leadership
By Paul Reichman
I was inspired to read this book by the subtitle `how ordinary managers become extraordinary leaders'. As an entrepreneur, I love learning about the amazing feats performed in work and non work settings by very ordinary people. The idea of a book which unpicked this phenomenon in the leadership space and debunked the myth of the perfect CEO really appealed to me.

I found Leadership Transformed a fascinating and worthwhile read. I identified with some of the struggling leaders in the stories Fuda described and laughed at the warts and all accounts of their early attempts to lead. In my opinion, the seven metaphors are an accessible and very effective way to convey just the right amount of leadership theory combined with a practical take on modern philosophy and simple common sense. The practical strategies and approaches described will be equally relevant and helpful whether you work in a large corporate or a small business. As an example, this is the first leadership manual I have read which acknowledges the very real and meaningful role family and friends play as sources of leadership coaching and insight. I suspect this book is one that I will return to frequently.

Professor Risley and the Imperial Japanese Troupe: How an American Acrobat Introduced Circus to Japan--and Japan to the West, by Frederik

"Frederik L. Schodt has at long last unveiled the fascinating story of 'Professor Risley.' Circus scholars, history buffs, and anyone with an ounce of curiosity should be grateful to him."—Dominique Jando, Circopedia.org

"Professor" Risley (Richard Risley Carlisle) introduced the Western circus to Japan in 1864. Three years later, this former acrobat gave many in the West their first glimpse of Japan when he took his "Imperial Japanese Troupe" of acrobats and jugglers on a triumphant tour of North America and Europe. Over the next few years, the Troupe performed before presidents, monarchs, and ordinary citizens. Frederik L. Schodt argues compellingly that such early popular entertainments helped stir a curiosity about all things Japanese that eventually led to japonisme, The Mikado, and, in our time, the boom in manga and anime.

Schodt's depiction of Risley and his troupe is enlivened by portraits of the circus demimonde and supported by nineteenth-century photographs, posters, and drawings, many in color. His accounts of these first meetings between Westerners and Japanese shed new light on how different cultures meet, mingle, and influence each other. Descriptions of crowds, dazzling routines, and superstar troupe performers like the famous Little All Right are a delightful revelation to anyone interested in Asia, the circus, and popular entertainment.

Frederik L. Schodt has authored numerous books about Japan, including Manga! Manga! and Native American in the Land of the Shogun. In 2009 for his work he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.

"Pick up Schodt's latest book and move well beyond a study of Japanese culture. Schodt takes us all around the world of 19th-century entertainment: the competition, the disdain, the copycats and the triumphs. It's a captivating story about a pioneer in international entertainment."—The Japan Times

"If you have any interest in Japanese history -- whatsoever -- pick up this book. Schodt knocked this title out of the park. It's a real page-turner, and that's saying a lot when dealing with a history book."— Japanator blog

An engaging look at 19th-century popular culture
By Ash Brown
Professor Risley and the Imperial Japanese Troupe: How an American Acrobat Introduced Circus to Japan--and Japan to the West was written by Frederik L. Schodt and published by Stone Bridge Press in 2012. It is Schodt's seventh book dealing with Japanese culture and history. I am primarily familiar with Schodt's work as a manga and anime scholar and translator, but as can be seen with Professor Risley and the Imperial Japanese Troupe and several of his other books, his knowledge and interests extend to other subject areas as well. I first learned about Professor Risley and the Imperial Japanese Troupe because I follow Schodt's work in general. I was interested in reading the book for that reason, but also because I happen to have an interest in Japanese history as well as in the performing arts.

After a brief preface explaining how he came to write the book, Schodt launches into the main text of Professor Risley and the Imperial Japanese Troupe. The first chapter, or "act," is appropriately titled "Setting the Stage" and provides the necessary background and historical context for the book. The next three acts--"The Risley Act," "Going for Gold," and "Into Asia"--explore the life of Professor Risley, the stage name of American showman Richard Risley Carlisle. Acts five through nine--"Yokohama, Japan," "Taking America," "At the Exposition," "The Long Way to London," and "The Matter of the Contract"--follow the formation of the Imperial Japanese Troupe and their nearly two-and-a- half-year tour of seven countries: the United States, France, England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, and Portugal. Act ten, "Final Acts" traces the end of Professor Risley and the troupe and their lasting influence. The book is completed with an afterword, notes, select bibliography, and a thorough index.

In 1866, the eighteen men, women, and youths from the Sumidagawa, Matsui, and Hamaikari preforming families who would make up Risley's Imperial Japanese Troupe received the first official passports granted to ordinary Japanese citizens. Since the mid-17th century, the Japanese government had severely limited travel into and out of Japan. The opening of Japan helped to ignite an interest in Japanese art and culture across the world. A large part of the Imperial Japanese Troupe's success was due not only to the members' skill but to the perceived exoticism of their performances. For the first time the world at wide was being introduced to Japanese culture. At the same time, ordinary Japanese were finally allowed and able to see the world beyond their own country. The tour of the Imperial Japanese Troupe was a meeting, meshing, and clashing of cultures. And while the group was away, Japan itself was undergoing a revolution as the Meiji era was ushered in.

Professor Risley and the Imperial Japanese Troupe was absolutely fascinating. Additionally, Schodt's writing is an utter delight to read. Although Professor Risley and the Imperial Japanese Troupe has been thoroughly researched and has an academic bent to it, the book is still easily accessible and approachable even for more casual readers. One of the things that I particularly loved about Professor Risley and the Imperial Japanese Troupe is that it is filled with reproductions of historical photographs, artwork, newspaper clippings, playbills, advertisements, and so on, including sixteen pages in full color. They are a fabulous addition to an already great book. I enjoyed Professor Risley and the Imperial Japanese Troupe immensely. It's an incredibly engaging work on 19th-century popular culture and very easy to recommend.

A trip back through time
By Matt
Frederik Schodt's books are always a treat to read, deeply researched yet engagingly written. This detailed and actually quite moving account of "Professor" Risley, a 19th century performer-adventurer, sheds light on a group of talented individuals who have remained in the shadows for far too long. Risley's troupe represented the first time many Americans and Europeans ever saw Japanese people or heard Japanese music, and it is a shame that their contributions have been forgotten for so long. This book is an absolutely fascinating window into a little-known chapter from the very beginnings of the relationship between the US and Japan.

Risley Rocks...
By FHG
...and Schodt rocks too! This book will enchant you beyond belief. It's the kind of book you need to tumble across, because you would never look for it since it would never occur to you that such a story is out there. Late 1900s: an American acrobat/businessman/crook decides that it is time for San Franciscans to be exposed to Japanese acrobatics....and unleashes a world-wide fad for Japanese circus, creates global celebrities, wins it all, loses it all...where is the Hollywood movie??? Schodt really has an unusual gift for telling a meticulously researched piece of forgotten history in a jargon-free narrative that is funny, enlightening, and leaves you to crave for more. Highly recommended, for anyone interested in Japan's early encounters with the West, the West's early encounters with Japan, the history of American pop-culture, or just about anyone interested in a darn good read!

The Pope's Bookbinder: A Memoir, by David Mason

"Entertaining, moving, informative, intelligently hopeful: I know of few other books like this one to warm the cockles of a booklover's heart." —Alberto Manguel

"For anyone who loves books too well—who lusts after them, lives in them, mainlines them—David Mason’s memoir will be a fix from heaven. Heartful, cantankerous, droll, his tales of honour and obsession in the trade gratify the very book-love they portray. An irresistible read." —Dennis Lee

"An atmospheric, informative memoir by a Canadian seller of used and rare books ... Gossipy, rambling and enchanting, alive with Mason’s love for books of every variety."—Kirkus Reviews

From his drug-hazy, book-happy years near the Beat Hotel in Paris and throughout his career as antiquarian book dealer, David Mason brings us a storied life. He discovers his love of literature in a bathtub at age eleven, thumbing through stacks of lurid Signet paperbacks. At fifteen he’s expelled from school. For the next decade and a half, he will work odd jobs, buck all authority, buy books more often than food, and float around Europe. He’ll help gild a volume in white morocco for Pope John XXIII. And then, at the age of 30, after returning home to Canada and apprenticing with Joseph Patrick Books, David Mason will find his calling.

Over the course of what is now a legendary international career, Mason shows unerring instincts for the logic of the trade. He makes good money from Canadian editions, both legitimate and pirated (turns out Canadian piracies so incensed Mark Twain that he moved to Montreal for six months to gain copyright protection). He outfoxes the cousins of L.M. Montgomery at auction and blackmails the head of the Royal Ontario Museum. He excoriates the bureaucratic pettiness that obstructs public acquisitions, he trumpets the ingenuity of collectors and scouts, and in archives around the world he appraises history in its unsifted and most moving forms. Above all, however, David Mason boldly campaigns for what he feels is the moral duty of the antiquarian trade: to preserve the history and traditions of all nations, and to assert without compromise that such histories have value.

Sly, sparkling, and endearingly gruff, The Pope's Bookbinder is an engrossing memoir by a giant in the book trade—whose infectious enthusiasm, human insight, commercial shrewdness, and deadpan humour will delight bibliophiles for decades to come.

Review
"David Mason's absorbing memoir might be summed up by a button I recently acquired: 'Life? Of course I have a life. It's a life filled with books' ... Early on in this rambling, easygoing account of his career, Mason mentions three outstanding classics of that tiny subgenre: Charles Everitt’s The Adventures of a Treasure Hunter, David Randall’s Dukedom Large Enough and David Magee’s Infinite Riches. The Pope’s Bookbinder belongs on the same shelf."—Michael Dirda, The Washington Post

"[David] Mason catalogs for posterity a time when books were sold by hand, sought on foot, and priced accordingly … in what may be one of the last great booksellers’ accounts."—The San Francisco Book Review

"Plain-spoken, sometimes gruff, but always unafraid ... the book stands as a monument to what are, or perhaps were, the last great days of traditional shop-based bookselling, a world in which booksellers still educated each other, a world in which the expertise and traditions were handed on, a world in which bookshops brought new collectors into being with beguiling talk and modest initial purchases. It's a way of life already disappearing: the parting question is, 'And what will happen to the education of new collectors when there are no used bookstores? Who will teach them what they need to know?'—it's a question we have to answer."—Laurence Worms, Antiquarian Booksellers' Association

"A witty raconteur and compulsive gossip, Mason has written a book that will delight anyone who loves literary scuttlebutt."—The Globe & Mail

"Mason is a confessed 'inveterate gossip,' unafraid to name names or pass stern judgment on various bitter controversies that have rocked the Canadian trade. But his portraits, rarely black and white, are typically affectionate, with page after page displaying his plentiful stock of unusual characters … The Pope’s Bookbinder strikes a fine balance between impressing with insider lore and welcoming the outsider ... The chatty digressions and omissions — sometimes hinting at truly salacious tales sealed up for the principals’ lifetimes — invite you to learn more."—The National Post

"A sweeping tour of the bookselling industry through the eyes of a man who has been at the heart of it for decades."—The Toronto Star

“Riveting and valuable. No less than a life seen through the lens of a love of books and literature, Toronto antiquarian Mason’s memoir provides eloquent proof that Gutenberg’s descendants are not ready to give up the good fight. Bibliophiles — you know who you are, folks — will find bottomless solace in these pages.”—Montreal Gazette

"Completely charming ... His sly humor and passion about the idea of collecting made me see my library as the personal achievement that it is."—Paper Over Board

"Buy it. Buy it. Buy it."—The Dusty Bookcase

"Atmospheric, informative memoir by a Canadian seller of used and rare books. Born in 1938, Mason as a kid was more comfortable in pool halls than the Toronto school system and got “permanently suspended” at 15. He wound up bumming around Europe, taking odd jobs and drugs, talking passionately about books with fellow free souls. A brief stint as a bookbinder in Spain ... gave him a marketable skill when he returned to Toronto in the late 1960s, but a part-time bookstore job showed him his real talents: talking to people and finding books for them. After a few years’ apprenticeship with Jerry Sherlock, one of the many rare booksellers to whom Mason pays affectionate tribute, he went out on his own. One of his first areas of expertise was Canadian editions of books by foreign authors, a bibliographic area he pioneered in a project for the National Library of Canada, until he broke bitterly with the library and a colleague over what he considered a breach of faith. His memoirs reveal Mason as a good grudge-holder, and his feelings about librarians are mixed; affection for those at local branches who initiate youth into the wonders of books balances disdain for the bureaucrats at major institutions. He wholeheartedly loves anyone who loves books—no matter how eccentric—as we see in a hilarious chapter about private collectors. Mason is a shrewd commercial operator when he needs to be, but his main focus is on the vital role non-chain booksellers play as preservers of our cultural heritage. His burning sense of mission ... gives a vivid sense of its author’s idiosyncratic personality. Gossipy, rambling and enchanting, alive with Mason’s love for books of every variety."—Kirkus Reviews

The Bookman Tells an Antiquarian Tale
By L. Peat O'Neil
This is my favorite book of the season. Funny thing is, I browsed and very occasionally bought books at The Village bookstore while I was a low-income student at U of T. Michael Dirda praised this memoir of a bookman in the Washington Post and it is every bit as good as the review promised. And more because Toronto is one of my hometowns.

Like a Rare and Classic Dram
By D. Collard
This book is my first look into the business of selling books as a career and most notably as a passion. The author's voice remains melancholy much of the time, but the reader is blessed with many insightful stories that range from the business itself to human psychology. At each moment the author's voice sounds genuine and sincere, imparting many trade secrets about the business and what it all meant in his own life journey. The overall impression of this novel is like a nice glass of scotch and returning to each round is always welcomed.

You can make copies of some of the most popular restaurant's signature dishes right in your own kitchen.
By Kathryn E. Etier
[...] is a website where one can find over 1500 recipes that duplicate famous offerings from popular restaurants (mostly chains), as well as a few from grocery stores and products on grocery store shelves that are better fresh than made from a box. The question some may ask is, "Why would you make Boston Market meatloaf at home when you can just go over to Boston Market and have it?" Good question.

Many people have visited, but do not live near, the Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, or Boston Market (among the many restaurants included in Dining Out at Home). Cravings for Outback's Queensland Chicken and Shrimp or Rainforest Café's Caribou Coconut Chicken (pictured) may not be strong enough to warrant the round trip to a distant restaurant.

No one can promise that the Wendy's Chili copy you make will taste exactly like the chili you get at Wendy's, but then again, it's not made with chopped-up, leftover hamburgers and is, in fact, a whole lot better than the original. Home chefs are not guaranteed restaurant results, but most of the dishes are equal to the originals or close enough to satisfy that T.G.I. Friday's Nine-Layer Dip jones from which one suffers.

The techniques for creating the poser dishes are not difficult, however some of the recipes are complex and require a multitude of ingredients. The time spent in the kitchen for a few of the recipes will exceed the time it takes to order dinner and eat it in the restaurant. However, for those who actually enjoy cooking, there's lots of fun to be had in recreating popular dishes, as well as reinventing them. It's important to remember, though, that [...] Dining Out at Home Cookbook recipes are not the original recipes from the source restaurants, but [...] version of those recipes. "No sponsorship or endorsement by, or affiliation with, the trademark owners is claimed or suggested by the author or publisher."

Recipes for dips, desserts, entrees, drinks, salads, and side orders are included in this collection. In addition to the restaurants already mentioned, others inspiring recipes are Jack in the Box, Red Lobster, The Cheesecake Factory, Chili's, IHOP, Brennan's, Hooters, Cinnabon, and many others.

Yummy! I don't know what to make first!
By Mom and teacher
A fan of copykat.com, I had been anticipating the release of Stephanie's new Dining Out at Home Cookbook. It arrived in the mail today and I immediately started browsing through.
The first thing I noticed was how the book is organized. It is set up very traditionally with a section for appetizers, soups, desserts, etc. There is even a drink section! There are also cute little icons used throughout the book to denote cocktail party, meat lovers, game day, vegetarian, etc.
I was delighted to see the vegetarian icon because, wouldn't you know I gave up meat just yesterday?!
I would suspect that many vegetarians would not look twice at this book, but I am very pleased with the vegetarian options.
I am immediately drawn to the fried rice, the squash casserole, and the fried shrooms. There are still others that could be made without the meat. I understand they would no longer be true CopyKats, but they would make a vegetarian very happy. I'm looking at the skillet cabbage. Yum! Vegetarians could leave out the bacon and still have a delicious side or maybe even a main dish. That said, if you're a vegetarian, this still may be worth a look.
My favorite part of this book (aside from the recipes) is the index. I'm a teacher. I just can't help myself! There is an alphabetical recipe index and also a listing of recipes by restaurant. How fun! That is exactly what I wanted to see and it was there! I am really enjoying reading the different options from each restaurant. It feels very familiar and comfortable, yet I feel like someone let me in on a big secret. Oh my Goodness! Banana Bread French Toast! I have to go cook something right now! ;)
