A rich collection of classical anarchist texts!

Thank you AK Press for re-printing Daniel Guerin's classic anthology of early anarchist manifestoes! Included are essays by Malatesta, Goldman, Kropotkin, Bakunin, Durruti and Makhno, among others, covering such important events in late 19th/ early 20th century radical history as the Paris Commune, the Kronstadt rebellion and the Spanish civil war. Labor history scholars and activists alike will benefit greatly from adding this gigantic tome to their peronal libraries!

When his father died, award-winning poet and curator Gil McElroy was given a box of photographs that documented his father’s military career. Beginning in the Second World War and continuing right through to the end of the Cold War, the senior McElroy staffed Canada’s network of electronic defence, including the Distant Early Warning Line – a network of radar stations stretching along the Arctic coast from Alaska to Baffin Island. Established in the early 1950s, the DEW Line provided advance warning of an aircraft or missile attack. There, servicemen lived in isolated radar stations, watching surveillance screens for the telltale blips that threatened nuclear annihilation.

McElroy reflects on the sacrifices these men made, living away from their families for great lengths of time – for the “greater good” of protecting North American airspace and Western values.

At the same time, Cold Comfort follows McElroy’s experience of growing up as an itinerant military brat, who moved from one posting to another, and the military family’s attempts to hold together in the face of the father’s absence. Cold Comfort also explores the utter enigma that was the author’s father. Examining the contents of the box of photographs, image by image, McElroy attempts to come to terms with the mysterious photographer, a man better understood by his military compatriots than by his own family.

Further, Cold Comfort provides the backstory to McElroy's most recent collection of poems, Ordinary Time, which offers an unsettling history of the utter failures of these remote surveillance technologies to make "our" world either better known or reliably predictable.

Gil McElroy
Gilbert McElroy, who goes by the name of Gil, was born in 1956 in Metz, France, as the eldest of four children. He grew up on air force bases in Canada and the United States. As a result of air force relocations, he spent his childhood in Metz, France (1956-1957), Chatham, New Brunswick and St. Margaret's, New Brunswick (1957-1961), Beaverbank, Nova Scotia (1961-1963), Tacoma, Washington (1963-1967), Windsor (1967), and North Bay, Ontario (1967-1975). He then studied English literature at Queen’s University in Ontario.

McElroy's poems and critical writing have been published in countless periodicals throughout North America since the late 1970s; issued in a number of self-published chapbooks, broadsheets, and one-of-a-kind book works; and anthologized in Groundswell: best of above/ground press, 1993–2003 (Broken Jaw Press, 2003), Side/Lines: A New Canadian Poetics (Insomniac Press, 2003), and Written in the Skin (Insomniac Press, 1999).

McElroy has also worked as an independent curator and freelance art critic for 20 years, organizing exhibitions for public art galleries and museums in Canada and writing art criticism for magazines in Canada, the United States, and Australia. A selection of his catalog essays and reviews was published as Gravity & Grace: Selected Writing on Contemporary Canadian Art (Gaspereau Press, 2001) and in the anthology CRAFT Perception and Practice: A Canadian Discourse (Ronsdale Press, 2002). His show St. Art: The Visual Poetry of bpNichol pays tribute to one of the great poets of the twentieth century. Originally mounted at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Museum in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, in May through October, 2000, St. Art later moved to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia before touring Canada throughout 2001. McElroy’s curatorial essay accompanying the exhibition also won the Christina Sabat Award for Critical Writing in the Arts.

McElroy is currently working on a social and cultural history of the electronic line of defense that was the Pinetree Line.

He lives in Colborne, Ontario, with his wife, Heather.

Vichy French-Holocaust

This book represents a remarkable,scholarly contribution to Holocaust studies.Getting into the smallest details,eg personal lives of perpetrators and victims-can seem excessive to the casual or even interested reader.But there is no mistaking the care taken by authors Levendel and Weisz-both born in France-to get it right.Anti-semitism doesn't explain it all,but it surely underlies what happened.In addition there was sadism,business interests,naked ambition,greed,fear.One contributor to the nightmare of the Holocaust called himself simply "a pencil pusher".The authors are persistent in evaluating various degrees of guilt when stories have been "sanitized".One interesting part of the book discusses the hunt both for Jews and the Resistance.An entire chapter is devoted to "Shades of Gray".These are randomly selected files described as typical of "average Frenchmen"[Very few can be described as either pure evil or heroic].For those interested in learning a lot about this stain on humanity,Hunting Down the Jews delivers.Perhaps there is a special sting for a Francophile like me.All the more,would I personally consider it "must reading".

The organizing of evil.

Isaac Levendel's HUNTING DOWN THE JEWS documents with the greatest attention to detail the Byzantine web of Nazi and collaborationist interdependence. With a clinical eye, Levendel describes the matter-of-fact procedures of a maniacally effecient Nazi occupation and the brutal French gangsters who do their bidding. HUNTING DOWN THE JEWS is as thorough a documentation as we are likely to see of the organization of the Nazi occupation of southern France. Levendel shows how the structures of power propagate and attract the venal, mediocre non-entities who carry out unspeakable crimes. Hannah Arndt describes the banality of evil; Levendel describes its beaurocracy.

Billingham's second thriller (after Sleepyhead) featuring London Det. Insp. Tom Thorne offers a twist on the serial killer subgenre. Brooding, melancholy Thorne heads a team of detectives who are alerted to the death of a young mother brutally strangled as her three-year-old son looks on. The body of a second murder victim, strangled in the same manner, turns up the same day, and Thorn and his team surmise they have a serial killer on their hands. The first half of the book deals with Thorne's discovery that there are really two killers at work and introduces the childhood backstory of the murderers. The second half picks up speed as the actual hunt commences. Billingham is adept at creating believable characters with ordinary and not-so-ordinary personal problems, then weaving them into the plot in surprising ways. At times, though, he pushes too hard to make Thorne's colleagues quirky: "Thorne stared at the figure in black fleece, with shaved head and a startling collection of facial piercings. Phil Hendricks was not everyone's idea of a pathologist, but he was the best Thorne had ever worked with." Thorne's gloomy internal musings on death and guilt tend to slow things down, but Billingham's handling of the plot is deft, fair and scattered with enough red herrings to open a fish and chips shop. When the mastermind behind both sets of killings is revealed in a dramatic denouement, readers will give the author his due and settle back to wait for the next installment of this dependable series.

More than a match for Henning Mankell's dour Swede Kurt Wallander, gruff and guilt-ridden Detective Inspector Tom Thorne drives his dedicated but dysfunctional police unit to bring a duo of London murderers to justice during the December holidays. The real meat of this smart, fast-paced procedural lies in its realistically raw characters--detectives and killers as good at their jobs as they are depressed about doing them. Thorne, so blinded by his zeal to crack the case that he'll offhandedly humiliate a supportive supervisor to get his risky plans approved, is the strongest of the lot. But from the ace medical examiner who sports an extra facial piercing for each new boyfriend to a pair of vividly imagined killers, the supporting cast is spot-on as well. an intense mystery

This is my first book by author Billingham and I am quite impressed. The plot twists around a pair of serial killers, intertwining the lives of DI Thorne and his crew of investigators. The final unveiling of the killer was quite a surprise, as I had guessed a different character to be the villain. The second half of the book really picks up speed and is hard to put down. You don't want to stop until the killer's identity is uncovered and hopefully he is caught. Intriguing characters, fast moving plot; I highly recommend it.

IS SMARTY PANTS NEXT?

Billingham's titles are great; not surprising since he is also a well-respected standup comic. However, even though his books have touches of humor, they are dark, disturbing, but definitely worth reading.
This time, our reluctant hero, Tom Thorne, is after a serial killer, who has killed a young woman in front of her little boy. Alas and alack, it appears there are TWO serial killers working together.
As we come to know the two villains in flashbacks, Billingham weaves a tightly constructed tale of a warped love, and it's disastrous results.
There are some strong supporting characters in Billingham's novels, and they help move the twisting plot along to a heart-stopping climax in a schoolyard. The identity of the real sicko is surprising, and don't be surprised at how Billingham treats his heroes, either!
An outstanding book, can't wait for the next one!

Not as good as his first...

Getting out of the tech genre for awhile, I relaxed with Mark Billingham's Scaredy Cat. This is his follow-up to Sleepyhead (that I really liked)...

A number of killings in England has Tom Thorne looking for a serial killer. The victims are found in pairs, and although the methods are similar, the intensity of the violence is different. He figures there are actually a pair of killers working in tandem. The pair of killers go back to a grammar school friendship, and it's the typical controller/controllee type relationship. The cops quickly get one of the killers, but then try to set a trap for the other one. Unfortunately, the trap backfires and the killer starts to strike closer to home. The question becomes can he be stopped before he kills someone close to Thorne.

As I mentioned above, I really liked Sleepyhead. Very dark, and hard to tell who was guilty and who was innocent. Scaredy Cat was just as dark, but the suspense wasn't there. You find out right away who the killers are, but you're not quite sure about the current identity of the controlling personality. The relationship between the killers is rather complex and somewhat ill-explained, and one of the common elements that tie them together is left to hang out there for far too long. When it's finally revealed, it doesn't seem to have the impact that it was probably intended to. Thorne's personal torments don't seem to do anything but sit there. The relationship between his partner Holland and a female cop with issues also doesn't seem to add anything to the storyline.

Maybe it's just the sophomore jinx, but this novel definitely isn't on par with his first...

Exactly what I was looking for!

This is a beautiful book. It's filled with inspiring photos and ideas for creating clever terrariums. I've tried making my own terrariums in the past but never quite gotten the environment right for encouraging my little plant guys to grow and thrive. Not to mention, I didn't know how to make my terrariums not so boring. I've gone to the internet for help, but what I've really needed was a guide like this. She takes you from the ingredients (which drainage materials, plant life, and vessels work well together) to step-by-step instructions for creating various types of terrariums. So far I've handily used this book to guide me in making a desert terrarium and a tropical terrarium and designing a little garden for my Wardian case. I can't wait to make more for gifts. This book uncomplicates terrarium-making but still manages to inspire a creative notion to make something uncommon.

Repetition of the same basic idea.

I initially liked the first example with the soils etc simplified and was intrigued by the terrarium in a bottle idea. However the focus of the whole book was primarily on bottles with a very small opening. There was never an explanation about how to keep soil off the glass, cleaning off the glass or keeping it clean so that you can even view what is in your terrarium. One of her examples had soil, water and substrate on the glass making it harder to see what is in the bottle. The photos were not clear nor detailed enough when enlarged, so that you can clearly see how plants etc. are placed in the bottle. These are tiny environments to be looked at closely and a "macro photo" (up-close and enlarged) should be included with each. All of the bottle examples were basically the same and assembled the same way with the same plants. There should be one example each of very different types of vessels. Included with each could be ideas of the different plants and decorations that could be put in it. Once you show how to do one bottle they were basically all the same. What about palm type tropicals? The cactus example was not creative and boring. When you put any water on that type of sand, like the fine, white sand on some beaches, it sort of "solidifies" for lack of a better word and will dry that way. You have to let it dry completely then use a paintbrush to return it to its original smoothness. I am very disappointed with this book. It was just a repetition of basically the same thing.

Creative and Inventive

I agree with other reviewers- this book has beautiful pictures, creative projects, and step-by-step instructions that make them seem less daunting. One thing I particularly appreciated was the resource list at the end. It is easy to write off a project as impossible if you have no idea where to source the basic materials, so having simple ways to order plants and even glassware online makes every project more feasible. I also appreciated the kid-friendly projects with heartier plants and simpler glassware. Those projects seemed realistic and fun, even for young kids.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a beginner's guide to creating terrariums!

The Hebridean island distilleries and those along the glorious sailing grounds of the West Coast are amongst the most scenic and historically fascinating in the industry. In 1984 Neil Wilson first visited the island distilleries on board the ketch Alystra and the book resulting from this wonderful trip, Scotch and Water, went on to be a classic of its genre. It delved into the history and development of the distilleries and the people who made these great whiskies. This new book incorporates the original research from Scotch and Water and includes a great deal of new material. The Islay malt sector is growing faster than any other in the trade, and this has led to the annual Islay Whisky Festival which attracts thousands of overseas visitors. The book not only features the established distilleries on Islay (Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Bowmore, Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Lagavulin, Laphroaig) and Jura, Mull and Skye (Talisker) but also the lost distilleries such as Port Ellen. The west-coast Oban Distillery is also included and there is a thorough look at the major role that women played in the history of illicit distiling in the County of Argyll with maps of known sites of distilling and appendices of the distillers and where and when they lived. Some of these records go back to the late 17th century.

the island whisky trail an illustrated guide to the hebridean distilleries

This is a splendid book about the single malt distilleries of the Hebrides, and although it features a yacht owners' exclusive tour, it is well worth the read just to find out about the distilleries that will show you around and give you a whisky tasting. Nice photography and well-written narrative. The 4 star rating (as opposed to 5) is because very few of us will be able to afford it!

Still not a lot of writing about the sailing aspect, but at least there's some connection between the sailing and the whisky touring and tasting....
