The book includes over 50 different visual tutorials to get you started.

It’s extremely helpful for me to know where to start and stop stitching and how to form the shapes whenever I tackle a new quilting design. The back of the book is filled with pages of quilting motifs that you can use to copy the design onto your quilt with a water soluble marker (and a light box).

They are also wonderful to trace around with a pen or pencil to get a feel for the movement of the design. Once you’ve done that a few times, you can try quilting these motifs without marking.
After you read through all the excellent information on the basics of free-motion quilting, the book includes 6 quilt projects to try. Each has a little bit of a modern flair and 5 of the 6 quilts feature machine applique (another one of my passions).

Terrific resource for quilters of all skill levels

Although it's titled a "beginner's" guide to free-motion quilting, this book has a wealth of techniques and tips to help everyone improve their free-motion quilting skills. The opening chapter provides a broad overview of the types of thread and batting available, with suggestions for which to choose based on the look you're trying to achieve. The middle section of the book is my favorite. Bonner provides extensive pictures of quilting each design, in-progress and completed. Best of all, she shows how to achieve each design without drawing or tracing it onto the quilt. Many of the traditional designs illustrated in this book include unusual twists, such as combining swirl and flower designs.

The second half of the book includes patterns for six beautiful quilts. Aside from the visual appeal of these quilts, they help you see how the patterns in the beginning of the book look on a real quilt. Finding unusual and simple applique tips hidden among those patterns was an added bonus.

Overall, I appreciated how this book truly makes free-motion quilting approachable. Too many quilters say they can't quilt on their own machine, or they're worried about messing up on the quilt. Bonner's book is a wonderfully clear, simple and stress-free answer to those concerns.

All about the negative space!

I am primarily a hand quilter or straight-line machine sewist. This book is great for somebody like me, who isn't new to quilting, but is new to free motion quilting. I love the section on quilting the negative space. It's amazing how the look of quilting completely changes the look of a quilt. Beautiful ideas...modern. Step away from the straight lines, it's time to try something new. If I can do it...anybody can.

Limited usefulness because shape templates cannot be printed

Kindle could have been a good format for this book, EXCEPT that the book has shape templates that should be printed and cut out to use in some of the quilt projects. There is no way in the Kindle PC reader to print selected content or pages. A link to a downloadable pdf was provided in the book to get around this constraint. HOWEVER, the pdf only had free motion quilting patterns and none of the templates that were referred to. I also checked the publisher's (C&T Publishing) website and they did not provide the templates either. If I had known the templates were not provided in a printable format, I would not have purchased the Kindle version.

Romaji writing

It is an excellent book as far as vocabulary and word power is concerned. . The only problem is that the romaji writing is rather confusing and different from other books on the subject. Example: in the case of "kudasai" it shows "kuda-sigh" to make sure that the English speakers pronounce it correctly. "Sore de" is spelled "soray-day". I have to admit that you should try to memorize the words in Japanese writing (either in kanji, hiragana or katakana) but I think that most of the vocabulary is first stored in your memory in romaji.

The book, sorry to say, is not worth the investment. there is nothing new there, nothing that any other book on growing in this method would not provide.

if your looking for anything groundbreaking this definately isnt it. If you are lokoing for something to give you BASIC knowledge of the hydro procedure. get it.

Save your money. Do NOT buy this book

This book has absolutely information or facts that can't pick up in a 20 minute BS session with someone that knew someone that grew. Nothing on room design, or setting up Ebb&flow tables. The author keeps ranting on about Sea Of Green (SOG) method, as if you are going to get a case study. Nope. Guess again.

The text is poorly written. The text is littered with extremely poor quality photos that serve to only muddle the subject matter even more. This is not careless writing. This is not just a poor effort. This is an unmitigated effort to rip you off. there is no way the author had any intention of giving you any real, useable information.

About the Author
David Gordon was born in New York City. He attended Sarah Lawrence College and holds an MA in English and Comparative Literature and an MFA in Writing, both from Columbia University, and has worked in film, fashion, publishing, and pornography. His first novel, The Serialist, won the VCU/Cabell First Novel Award and was a finalist for an Edgar Award. His work has also appeared in The Paris Review, Purple, and Fence among other publications.

Interesting blend of updated noir mystery and clichéd "weird L.A." story

For a New Yorker, author David Gordon has a pretty good handle on L.A. - the streets, the neighborhoods, and the weirdness of that sunny Southland metropolis. His novel "Mystery Girl" shows off that local knowledge while indulging in an outsider's viewpoint of the kind of general weirdness that is attributed to Tinseltown by the rest of the country.

Failed (so far...) novelist Sam Kornberg has been deserted by his wife, Lala. He is also unemployed, and in the quest for steady employment that will convince his wife to return, he stumbles into an offbeat assignment as the eyes and ears of a mostly house-bound, overweight agoraphobe who styles himself a "detective".

The plot lines twist and writhe like an exotic dancer at a club on the Sunset Strip, bringing in to play the underground film industry, pornographers, eccentric Hollywood types and ex-pat Americans living the gringo high life in Mexico. One major plot twist is telegraphed from about the middle of the book going forward, but it is satisfying, in a way, to see it come to fruition just as one suspected that it would.

"Mystery Girl" leads the reader in a number of directions, some of them expected and some of them not, and while the journey is often a bit bewildering, it is entertaining. This book will never ascend to the higher reaches of the pantheon of L.A. crime stories, but it is an enjoyable summer read.

The Teaser Promised Much More Than The Book Delivered

I was enticed into ordering this book by the teaser/synopsis which promised a thrilling comedy (or was it comedic thriller?) about a murder case involving several unique and unsavory characters thrown together in bizarre scenarios. The warning that I ignored was the Karen Thompson Walker endorsement about the author being "...an incredibly sharp wit with moments of real transcendent beauty." The word 'transcendent' means "being beyond comprehension" or "extending or lying beyond the limits of ordinary experience". Oh oh!

The book I read was about several characters suffering from various degrees of mental illness bouncing off each other in some type of chaos theory. It was more about the individual characters than the weak plot line. How do these bipolar, schizophrenic, and psychopathic individuals interact with people suffering from agoraphobia, acrophobia and paranoia (to name a few) and try to function in the real world? What is man's place in the world anyway? And what is "normal"?

I don't know if the author tried too hard or if I as the reader didn't try hard enough. But then again, no one should have to work hard to enjoy a novel. Or perhaps, just perhaps, it just wasn't a very good book.

Robert W. McChesney is the Gutgsell Endowed Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Definitive and Essential

I've already read this book twice and assigned parts of it to my students. In fact, it would be possible to teach an entire course around Digital Disconnect as it provides a thorough and learned look at the effect the internet has on the media climate and why we should be terribly afraid. The historical chapters explain how the likes of google and Microsoft stack up against Standard Oil and the large trusts of the 19th and 20th century and how we got where we are today. Like Susan Crawford, McChesney argues that lack of government regulation encouraged the growth of large corporations that now dominate the online world. This has terrible implications for privacy, civil liberties, free speech and free thought. My students said in class that the book was scary and an eye opener and has changed the way they view the web.

McChesney draws on the writings of Evgeny Morozov, Susan Crawford, Rebecca MacKinnon and many other thinkers who explain the policy implications of what our internet has become. Rooted in a political economy interpretation and grounded in work done by Columbia's Richard John and other journalism historians, McChesney's brings together history of journalism, a profound understanding of communications scholarship, technology and a good dose of policy expertise. The result is an essential read which is also surprisingly accessible and easy to understand. I'd recommend Digital Disconnect to my mother, my grad students or to anyone who wants to understand how the internet is changing our society and how its supporters have used our political system to benefit big business interests, here and abroad.

A Worthy Copy of a Masterpiece

I got this copy because I wanted a copy of the Hapgood translation in print that was unabridged, and in print. Being unable to find a hardcover with those criteria, I settled for this one.

What a pleasant surprise.

What I actually thought was a paperback was really a "flexiback." I am starting to see more large books being printed in this medium, and it is really neat. It is the best of both worlds really. This cover actually feels like faux leather - surely not cardboard - and it has a matte feel to it that gives a nice amount of grip for holding this big book. The words on the front and the back are actually embossed into the covers, which makes it look quite nice. The pages are of a perfect thickness for the size of this book. They are not too thin, but they are not thick. And also, and most importantly, the book is quite thick - it is genuinely unabridged.

This is one of my favorite books on my shelf. I am really glad I bought it, and at ~$10, it's a magnificent value. I definitely recommend it.

Masterpiece

I never thought on reading Les Miserables. I decided to do so quite some months ago. I'm glad I did. Most of Victor Hugo's reflections are still important and relevant for our days. Before watching the movie or going to the musical, do yourself a favor and read this one out. It is long but it is worth it.

I've had to make room for this as one of my all time favorite books

My only problem with this book was with the large amount of text in French, without footnotes or any other way, outside of sitting with a French/English dictionary to understand the meaning. It would have been nice if they had linked the French words and phrases, which are plentiful, with a built in dictionary just as they did for the English words. I had the same problem with War and Peace, by Tolstoy. The aristocracy in Russia used French most of the time and it was very difficult to get the gist of what was being said. Otherwise, I wish I had read this years ago. Victor Hugo's great novel, some call it the greatest novel of all time, would easily be a good choice if one were stranded on a desert island and could only take one book... for me, this would be it!!!

A very useful book; comprehensive and cool

This is an excellent reference work for anyone who has even a passing interest in Japanese cinema. Jacoby structures the book well, proceeding through all of the major Japanese directors (and many minor ones) in alphabetical order. For each director's entry, he provides a broad career overview - offering his own opinions of the major films - then includes a filmography. While I don't agree with absolutely all of his statements, his opinions are always interesting to read and well-informed, and it's nice to get a fresh (to me) perspective on such classic Japanese filmmakers as Kobayashi, Kurosawa, Ozu, Mizoguchi...

Another striking thing about this book is that Jacoby isn't snobby about which directors he includes. So he has "classical" directors like Mizoguchi in here, and also genre directors like Ishiro Honda of "Godzilla" fame and Takashi Miike. His willingness to cover drama, horror, science fiction, and gangster films in a single volume makes him more open-minded than most other aficionados of Japanese cinema, who tend to limit themselves to one or two genres. (Indeed, rare is the critic who enjoys both Tokyo Story and The Mysterians, as I do.) Another highlight is that Jacoby includes some useful appendices, such as an overview of the major Japanese film studios and a list of historical eras in Japan (handy for figuring out when all these samurai movies are supposed to take place).

Of course, since the book covers a lot of ground, Jacoby doesn't delve too deeply into any one director's work. Even "big guns" like Ozu and Kurosawa have short entries; and while Jacoby has room to challenge some common theories about Ozu, he doesn't have quite enough room to properly develop his counter-theories. Also, like most handbooks, this can get a little dry if you try to read it all in one go; I prefer to sample individual entries whenever I feel like it.

Overall, this is good stuff, and I look forward to using this book to track down the more obscure classics of Japanese cinema. As a pointless aside, many of the movies covered in this book have very amusing titles (in translation), on the order of: "Ninja Mountain Attack Saga: Duel by Autumn Moonlight!" Just thought I'd mention that, because it gave me a few chuckles.

Definitive (Or Pretty Darn Close)!

If you are a Japanese film enthusiast (or just have a casual interest in films from Japan), you will want to have this hard-copy guide close on-hand. To make sense of the Japanese cinema past and present (circa 2008 - the date of publication). The text is written in plain language for the general reader. It is a far cry from the essentially unintelligible volumes out there written by academic film scholars. Contents also include a substantial glossary of terminology, a historical overview of releasing studios, and a description of each Japanese cultural period addressed by currently-known Japanese films (starting with the Nara period, circa year 700). There are, however, some issues to be raised, one minor and a few more than minor. The index is substantial, but does not list films by generally-accepted translated titles in English. More irritating, films listed in the text for each director are cited first by their Japanese title (in romaji, thankfully) and then by their English translated title. This makes sense, since English title translations can vary. However and on balance, it does not make sense, since the readers of this handbook are likely to have English as their primary language. Further, film titles (in either Japanese romaji or English) are not listed alphabetically across years or within years. This makes the reader work harder than necessary to get at information of interest. Bottom line: Consolidated, comprehensive, invaluable, and in print. WILLIAM FLANIGAN, PhD.

Comprehensive understanding of any vibro-impact system is critically impeded by the lack of analytical tools viable for properly characterizing grazing bifurcation. This book establishes vibro-impact dynamics as a subset of the theory of discontinuous systems, thus enabling all vibro-impact systems to be explored and characterized for applications. 

The authors present an original theoretical way of analyzing the behavior of vibro-impact dynamics that can be extended to discontinuous dynamics. All topics are logically integrated to allow for vibro-impact dynamics–the central theme–to be presented. About the Author

Professor Luo is currently a Distinguished Research Professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He is an international renowned figure in the area of nonlinear dynamics and mechanics. For about 30 years, Dr. Luo s contributions on nonlinear dynamical systems and mechanics lie in (i) the local singularity theory for discontinuous dynamical systems, (ii) Dynamical systems synchronization, (iii) Analytical solutions of periodic and chaotic motions in nonlinear dynamical systems, (iv) The theory for stochastic and resonant layer in nonlinear Hamiltonian systems, (v) The full nonlinear theory for a deformable body. Such contributions have been scattered into 13 monographs and over 200 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers. His new research results are changing the traditional thinking in nonlinear physics and mathematics. Dr. Luo has served as an editor for the Journal Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical simulation , book series on Nonlinear Physical Science (HEP) and Nonlinear Systems and Complexity (Springer). Dr. Luo is the editorial member for two journals (i.e., IMeCh E Part K Journal of Multibody Dynamics and Journal of Vibration and Control). He also organized over 30 international symposiums and conferences on Dynamics and Control.
