About the Author
Daehaeng Sunim has emerged as one of the most creative and accessible of contemporary Korean Buddhist teachers. Entrust everything to your true nature and move forward

This is absolutely one of the best dharma books I've ever read. Daehaeng Sunim has a wonderfully clear and beautiful way of communicating the importance of connecting with and entrusting our foundation--whatever it is that means to us. Some call it Buddha nature, true nature, God, primary point, or don't know mind. Whatever you want to call it, it's what we all have in common, that thing that has never been born and will never die.

This is one of the few Zen authors I've come across who actually acknowledges that what we see is only 50% of reality, and that a corresponding invisible reality also exists. Many get so caught up in a "what you see is what you get" approach to Zen that never rang completely true for me, so Daehaeng Sunim's teachings are both refreshing and inspiring.

She constantly reminds the reader of the underlying nature we all posses that can handle anything that comes up, so long as we have faith that it's there and remember to return everything to it and just go forward.

Disarmingly simple, yet remarkably profound

No River to Cross is a delightful gem of a book. As the backcover reads "It is disarmingly simple yet remarkable profound, pointing us again and again to our foundation, our "True Nature." I write this review based on reading the book a number of times and also being part of this book's discussion group in Seoul, Korea with the editor Chong Go Sunim.

Her essential message in this book is simple: Entrust whatever arises to your source, your true nature. Let go, entrust, and have faith that your source will take care of it. And then move forward. Moving forward is key, because we tend to like to hold onto insights that we had, which then become stale and create arrogance --or we beat ourselves up for things we'veunskillfully done .

For me personally the teaching has had the effect of lessening my ego-antics; my self-centered stories and struggles fall away more quickly. The teachings work on a number of levels. One level is that we can have faith that indeed there is that which is beyond us, which is sustaining the world, and has taken care of us from before day one. One may seem some resemblance to Pure Land teachings here, except for the fact that Amida Buddha is not a separate entity from you but rather it is part of the One Mind that we all are and we all share. On a more psycho-spiritual level the teachings work as antidote to our constant confusion and struggle with ourselves. We let go and we realize this brings us happiness and peace. Why? Because most of our "suffering" is nothing more than our brain spinning its wheels. Finally, on a wisdom level, the teachings point out the fact that we, our little selves, are not the true doers. By letting go and deferring to our true nature we can see the bigger Actor on the stage. One may see some similarites here with Advaita, Sufiism, and other nondual teachings.

Daehaeng's approach is gentle and direct. She tries to impart confidence to us to trust ourselves. She asks "What is outside yourself that you are trying so hard to find?" (p.5) This ordinary mind now as it is, is where we find Buddha. This is in line with the ancient, noble tradition of Zen. However, she brings this often times obscure tradition into our everyday lives: practice is always here, always now. "There are many people who ignore Juingong (their true nature) and wander around outside, trying to find a better teacher or a better place for praying. They don't know that within themselves they have their own Dharma Hall, which is always filled with light and where Buddha is always present."

I'd recommend this book for people who looking for a new angle on their spiritual practice; who are attracted to nondual (Advaita) teachings, but find them difficult to practice; beginners new to Buddhism; and people looking for an all-around, life-based practice which will help them navigate through the good times and the bad.

"Why do you think you have nothing? Spiritual practice means having faith that there is a great treasure within your mind, and then finding it. Learning to discover the treasure within you is the most worthwhile thing in the world. If you can put this into practice, you can live freshly, with a mind open like the sky, always overflowing with compassion. What could be better than this?" (p. 34)

Die Ursachen sind häufige Erkrankungen und Infektionen der Atemwege, Feinstaub und Umweltgifte, Kälte, psychische Faktoren, Stress, Allergien, eine genetische Veranlagung, hormonelle Störungen und Veränderungen, Herzschwäche, Kalziummangel, eine Übersäuerung des Körpers, bestimmte Medikamente, eine Neurodermitis, Rauchen, Übergewicht und Bewegungsmangel.

About the Author
Jonathan S. Watts graduated with a BA in religious studies from Princeton University in 1989 and an MA in human sciences from the Saybrook Institute in 2002. He has been a researcher at the Jodo Shu Research Institute in Tokyo since 1999 and the International Buddhist Exchange Center since 2005. He has also been an associate professor of Buddhist studies at Keio University, Tokyo, and has been on the executive board of the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB) since 2003. He has coauthored and edited Never Die Alone: Birth as Death in Pure Land Buddhism, Rethinking Karma: The Dharma of Social Justice, This Precious Life: Buddhist Tsunami Relief, and Anti-Nuclear Activism in Post 3/11 Japan.

Rev. Yoshiharu Tomatsu became a fully ordained Buddhist priest in 1978. As a temple abbot, he has presided over thousands of funerals and memorial services while attending to spiritual needs of lay people. He received his masters of divinity at Taisho University, Tokyo, in 1979 and his master's of theological studies at Harvard University Divinity School in 1991. Rev. Tomatsu has been the coordinator of Jodo Shu Research Institute Study Group on Bio-Ethics since 2000, an associate professor at Keio University School of Medicine since 2005, and the founder and director of Jodo Shu Research Institute Ojo and Death Project since 2005. “Listening to the Dharma”:
Integrating Buddhism into a Multi-Faith Health Care Environment

In many ways the chaplain’s contribution to the medical environment is to balance the emotional and intellectual reactions for staff. Chaplains work as part of the medical team for the benefit of both patients and staff. They help support the medical team to stay connected, compassionate, and focused, and to provide a balance between the medical and the religious or spiritual. When staff feel settled, they are more efficient and effective, and this decreases burn out. The medical education of doctors and nurses has evolved to include more training in being attentive to the emotional and spiritual needs of the patient and family. They understand the value of offering empathy and compassion, but often find the support for themselves lacking.

Currently, I am the director of the department of spiritual care at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA. In addition, I am an educator with the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education program. Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is a graduate-level program with clinical opportunities for students of all faith traditions who are interested in ministry or health care chaplaincy. The educational process bridges their academic theological foundation with ministry situations to people who, because of life’s circumstances, are questioning meaning in their lives, their faiths, their spirituality. For example, up to this point in their formation as ministers, they have been studying how their religion understands human suffering; applying this understanding to people who are actually suffering often requires them to translate their intellectual understanding through their heart experience.

CPE is where students integrate the heart and the head, the intellect and the emotional, their academic understanding with their emotional stirrings. When students enter into a relationship with a patient and are willing to hear his or her pain and suffering, their own stories surface and things start to get messy for them. The educational experience for certified chaplains is designed to support this parallel process. In order to support them to do the reflective work necessary to grow and change, I have to create an environment that feels safe. I use concepts of play, art, film, and books. I also share my own stories, vulnerabilities, foibles, and idiosyncrasies. They know how human I am. My own personal work is to be willing to enter the chaos and mess. I walk alongside students who are willing to grow and change so they can be of service to others.

Just as my patients are usually not Buddhist, neither are my students. The Buddha’s Four Noble Truths outline my work in all spiritual care encounters, whether with patients, staff, or students. When my students see patients in physical, emotional, or spiritual pain, it touches an emotion and can stir up a memory from their own lives. They experience dis-ease and I need to respond empathetically. We identify their dis-easeand begin to explore the cause or causes. When they are ready to move forward, we imagine options and outline a plan for when these same feelings come forward again. This is how they learn the craft of chaplaincy.

In the case of my student John, as he touched on his grief, I shifted into the role of his chaplain, offering empathetic responses so he felt known and companioned. This created a space for him to feel free to identify his dis-easeand explore its causes. He was open to exploring if there might be more to his sadness than his feelings for the parents of the deceased baby. He realized that these feelings were on the surface and that there was a deeper sadness that was getting stirred up. He was aware that he wanted to do something more for the couple that was different from his previous other death situations. His real feelings were of grief that his dreams of starting his own family were growing dimmer. Recognizing the deeper grief, John wept. When he was ready, he began to explore again the causes of his dis-ease. He said he was angry at God, at first for the parents’ loss. Then he went deeper and said he was mad for his own loss. How, he wondered, could God give a precious baby to this young couple then take it away, and how could God not hear the cries of his own heart? Back and forth we roamed between identifying dis-ease and exploring the causes. When he sighed deeply and wondered if he would ever find his life’s partner, I heard him open up to imagining possibility. He was not demanding, angry, or absolute. His tone was not “Will I EVER find someone?!” Rather, it was “I wonder if I’ll find someone.” To which my response was that perhaps it was a feeling he had in the moment, implying that this was not a consistent feeling for him. John could imagine that he would feel differently in the future. Possibilities exist for him.

In working with students, a key component to their professional development and growth is the ability to reflect on the encounters and integrate their new awareness into the next opportunity. In John’s situation, he outlined a plan that included a sign in his cubicle that said, “All in good time.” Additionally, the anxiety he felt to do something extra for the couple could be put into context, and he could release his need to over-function in this situation. In this way, he did not deny feelings of sadness as they arose but rather acknowledged them and soothed them simultaneously. Through the process of compassionately moving into our dis-ease, our suffering has the potential to be transformed. What we experience is an unlimited potential for relating to others and for growth and change in ourselves. In supervision, I facilitate the learning environment where students grow in awareness of dis-ease, within themselves and with patients. I support students to use their own understanding and experiences with the source of compassion from their own faith tradition. By doing this, they are able to explore their potential as spiritual care providers.

Actualizing Understanding:
Compassion, AIDS, Death, and Dying among the Poor
(Cambodia)

Within the development of this vastly increased range of activities, the question of what it means to us that we are a Buddhist organization has also undergone radical change and development. In some ways, what it means to be Buddhist is straightforward. With some exceptions, we work as closely as possible within the Khmer Buddhist tradition. My staff is trained in the Khmer and Pali chanting done in the temples. We study meditation in the vipassana tradition of Sayadaw Mahasi from Burma, the same general Theravada tradition of Cambodia and Southeast Asia. We chant and meditate every day before going out to see patients. We chant on major precept days and several times a month in the Chea Chum Neas Mortuary. We give precepts and chant for patients who are dying and give eight-precept ordination when appropriate. We conduct funeral chanting for the dead and sometimes join in funeral services for families that cannot afford to bring in monks. We continue to give precepts and chant for people for forty-nine days following patient deaths. We sometimes provide small statues of the Buddha for patients. We provide a little money for families to go to the temples seven days after a death, along with urns for the bones of the dead. We continue to conduct ghost ceremonies when asked.

For our own development, we study Buddhist teachings and do extended meditation on Wednesdays. At least once a year, we hold a ten-day staff vipassana retreat. We train in the precepts, the perfections (paramitas), and the Four Noble Truths, as well as in other aspects of the Buddha’s teaching. The training in the precepts and paramitas is vital. First, the precepts help provide inner safety by preventing us from doing harm. Second, the paramitas not only help us develop the necessary qualities of character for the development of insight, they are also profoundly important in allowing us to continue what is sometimes extraordinarily difficult and painful work over time and to be strengthened rather than weakened by it.

When I began this work, my unofficial supervisor and the head of the Maryknoll project used to say to me, “If it is not life affirming for you, it will not be life affirming for the patients.” I used to respond, “Just because it is hard, doesn’t mean it isn’t life affirming.” He would agree. After some years, there was a kind of sea change, and I began to experience a deep intimacy and peacefulness with patients, even under the most difficult and terrible circumstances. Even later, I began to trust and expect this intimacy to emerge. All of us currently on staff have long, deep familiarity with times—sometimes moments, sometimes longer—when both we and the patients (and families) are being held in something profound, wordless, intimate, and deep, when we are as much the recipients as the agents of sustaining compassion.

It is this experience of time and compassion that sustains the work and sustains us within it. All our training, our work on the development of character and insight, and our religious practices have both their testing ground and their fulfillment in this intimacy.

This intimacy is not restricted to our work with patients; it is the supporting fabric of every aspect of our lives. However, it is most fully tested in the work with patients. It is here that we not only experience intimacy but experience, see, and explore the barriers that keep us from it. The more fully we become capable of experiencing intimacy, the more aware we become of the many times when we are preoccupied, annoyed, resistant, distracted, and unable fully to be present. “The patients are our teachers,” is a favorite saying of one of my oldest staff ...

A very good and informative publication explaining the ins and outs of healthcare in the East. It is very sad to read the situation of those dying and what they are facing in this crucial time i their lives. The book teaches empathy for those involved and their families. It is a very interesting read and poses a lot of questions.

Ate it up like candy

Excellent book! Rich and insightful about the human condition. I read this book as a class assignment but I ate it up like candy! It raised in me a greater interest in working with the dying and bereaved in my professional life as a counselor. The essays are written with passion and emotional heft. If you are a counselor with any interest in working with people in hospice care or facing critical decisions about life and death, this book is a must.

The Perfect Gem

Having immensly enjoyed reading two of ROB books, I just had to read one more and what a Gem it was. The Deep Green Sea for me IS the best book I have read (so far) this year as from the first page to the very last I was immensly enthralled in this poetic and wonderfullly written love story. At times I turned the pages quickly to learn what had happened in the past or what would occur next whilst on others I turned them over slower and slower to avoid reaching the end of The Perfect Gem. I've been enthralled by Robert Olen Butler's books an order has just been placed for my 4th and which probably will not be the last. I truthfully wonder why I never discovered this beautiful creative writer earlier, particularly as The Deep Green Sea was published in 1997 but I've 'found' him now!

Haunting

A most lyrical and engaging story which days later is still very much with me and which will surely remain quite unforgetable even amidst the many books I am always reading. Although I have never been in Vietnam, The Deep Green Sea deftly paints a vivid picture of the twenty-five year post-War return visit of a US soldier and a touching and haunting relationship he enters into with a younger English-speaking Vietnamese woman. With an unusual and subtle suspense, the text alternates between each of the two characters' thoughts and feeling. A very different kind of book, but one, I feel, you, too, will recommend to friends.

I like Robert Olen Butler. I have read 2 previous novels, and expected more of the same. This book was a total surprise, in that it is a totally different style. It is well-written, but is an acquired taste. Much more romantic and psychological,than adventurous and exciting. I would not recommend it.

James Bacque
James Bacque is a novelist, book editor, essayist and historian whose work has helped raise awareness in human rights issues associated with war crimes, particularly spurring debate on and research into the treatment of German POWs at the end of World War II.

His fiction titles include The Lonely Ones, 1969 (Big Lonely in the paperback edition, 1970); A Man of Talent, 1972; Creation (with Robert Kroetsch and Pierre Gravel), 1972; The Queen Comes to Minnicog, 1979; and Our Fathers’ War, 2006. An extraordinary book. It tells two of the most extraordinary stories of the 20th century simultaneously. Neither has been told before. One is the story of a great hero - Herbert Hoover, not J. Edgar the FBI boss, but a multimillionaire humanitarian whose courage, outspokenness, persistence and dedication saved literally tens of millions of people from starvation after the first world war and then after the second. And it's the story of why we never hear about this. General Eisenhower, war "hero" and later US president, of whom we have all heard, persued a deliberate policy of preventing available food aid into Germany between 1945-49. Laws preventing emigration turned the country into a prison. As Bacque revealed in earlier book OTHER LOSSES, millions of disarmed soldiers died in prison camps; further more, Bacque tells the story of the suffering of civilians, dying from starvation. It is a part of living memory that times were extraordinarily hard, but Bacque's research has enabled an estimate of the scale for the first time: at least 9 million. He has found the documents which trace the decisions leading to this second holocaust, leading back to Eisenhower and his advisors. It is a courageous act for a man aged more than 70 accuse a war hero and president of being commiting atrocities. Bacques thoughts on collective are thought provocing. It's a sign of the times that a book like this is out of print. By it before it becomes a historical document in itself. Read it and tell people. It's relevant to today.

In this powerful new book, Canadian historian James Bacque presents detailed evidence, much of it newly uncovered, to show that some nine million Germans died as a result of Allied starvation and expulsion policies in the first five years after the Second World War -- a total far greater than the long-accepted figures. These deaths are still being concealed and denied, writes Bacque, especially by American and British authorities. Crimes and Mercies -- a handsome hardcover work, illustrated and well-referenced -- is a devastating indictment of Allied, and especially American, occupation policy in defeated postwar Germany. Nearly 15 million Germans fled or were brutally expelled in the greatest act of "ethnic cleansing" in history, a human catastrophe in which some two million were killed or otherwise perished. Then, under the notorious "Morgenthau Plan" and its successor policies, the Allies carried out a massive looting of Germany, and even prevented German civilians from growing enough food to feed themselves. Bacque shows, for example, that General Eisenhower, in violation of the Geneva Convention, in May 1945 forbade German civilians to take food to prisoners starving to death in American camps. He threatened the death penalty for anyone feeding prisoners. Bacque also describes the terrors of the postwar camps in Poland where children and other German civilians lost their lives. Written with fervor, compassion and humanity, and making use of never-before cited records in Moscow archives, James Bacque exposes a little-known but important chapter of 20th century history. He builds upon the revelations of his startling 1989 study, Other Losses, which presented evidence to show that hundreds of thousands of German prisoners of war died as a result of cruel and illegal mistreatment by American, British and French authorities. To Bad Some "Top Reviewers" are Filled With Hate!

If historical facts truely cause some "readers to write trash" so be it. I have read my copy of this book and in my opinion should be required reading by everyone.
Many Germans civilians were killed and their properties stolen from them because of this war. My family lost our farm that we had for over two hundred and fifty years in East Prussia. But I guess accordingly to "The Top Reviewer" we had it coming to us because our German government, at the time, was evil.
I was only a young boy at the time, but we survived. Because we lost our farm in the real eastern Germany, we came to this country.
And I grew up and became an Electronic/Electrical Engineer. By the way. One last special note to "Mr. Top Reviewer", and people like him, when you look up at the moon at night, remember this.
A young German boy survived your bad wishes and was a proud member of the team that helped design and build all of the first unmaned Spacecrafts that landed the moon. This Spacecrafts series were called the Rangers. And they are still there, all of them that went.

Good dictionary for beginners

Samuel Martin's dictionary, published by Tuttle, is an excellent dictionary for beginning learners of Japanese. It is particularly helpful in that it gives the dictionary form of verbs (that is, the -u or -ru form), the -te form of verbs, and the non-past affirmative -masu form). Beginners need to have an easy reference that gives them these verb forms.

Not for Kindle

I own this dictionary in paper, and love it. But the Kindle is not the place for it. There is no way (that I have found) to look up words. You have to know what word you want if you want to do a search, and you may not know what word you want and that is why you are using a dictionary.

I recommend this dictionary highly in paper. It is my constant companion. I'm learning Japanese and it has been invaluable - easy to use, comprehensive, big enough type for older eyes, good explanations. I wouldn't be without it. But when I got my Kindle version I was very disappointed. It was pretty much useless.

difficult to navigate

It was hard to find words. When you search fie a specific translation, it gives you the location of the word every time it is used in the. For example, if you look up "dog" shows you where "dog" is used in the entire book. There may be 20 uses and only one is the translation of "dog." Not helpful you are trying to converse.

About the Author
John D. Dunne is a professor of Buddhist Studies at Emory University in Atlanta. He attended Amherst College and in 1999 received his PhD in Sanskrit and Tibetan studies from Harvard University. Before Emory, John was on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and conducted research at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Central University of Higher Tibetan Studies in Sarnath, India. A co-director of Emory's Collaborative for Contemplative Studies as well as the Encyclopedia of Contemplative Practices, he is also a fellow of the Mind and Life Institute and an advisor to the Center for Investigating HealthyMinds. He frequently serves as a translator for Tibetan scholars, and as a consultant, he is involved in various scientific studies of contemplative practices.

An Important Contribution to Buddhist Epistemology

This book will be challenging for those who do not have a medium-to-strong background in Buddhist philosophy, although a background in western philosophy might be sufficient. John Dunne is considered one of the most prominent rising scholars in the field of Buddhist studies in the US, following on from the generation of Robert Thurman, Jeffrey Hopkins, and others. Although published by Wisdom Publications, one should know that this book is written more for scholars than for Buddhist practitioners. Not that these two are mutually exclusive categories, by any means. In fact, Buddhist monastic education places a great emphasis on the works of Dharmakirti precisely because an understanding of epistemology, logic, and reasoning is an invaluable guide to the practice of the Buddhist path, which involves developing a correct understanding of how things exist.

Despite the tremendous importance of Dharmakirti for Mahayana Buddhism (and even for the development of Indian philosophy more generally), there are not many books that treat in detail the writings of this powerful thinker. Based on a command of Sanskrit and Tibetan, and a strong knowledge of Buddhist philosophy, John Dunne has created what will surely be regarded as the starting place for the study of Dharmakirti in the English language. Because Dharmakirti wrote mainly in the modes of the Sautrantika and Yogacara philosophical "tenet schools," this book also serves as a very good work for coming to understand Sautrantika philosophy.

love it hate it

my god do I hate this book. Yet it could be the only copy directly related to Dharmakīrti's in the entire state of Connecticut.

from a student's standpoint I hate the way the book is laid out. the first 40 pages are spent giving you tips on how to understand Dharmakīrti's rather than talking about what his actual work. In edition the book is set up for people with a philosophy background, or at least I would assume so given it's colorful vocabulary.

This being said, out of all the books I had in front of me this was probably the most useful of them all.

for anyone using this book as research material skip to page 20 and then google standard encyclopedia of philosophy Dharmakīrti's it will help you decrypt a lot of whats being said.

Tibetan Buddhism

This is a well written, timely examination of some of the most important issues facing contempoarary students of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy. The author makes it accessible to the lay student without sacrificing rigor for the specialist. With the current interest in Buddhist philosphy and it's relation to Western thought, for my money, this is a must read. We are lucky to have the efforts of this author placed on this important subject.
