Dieser erste Band einer zehnteiligen Reihe "Spiritualität und Seelsorge" der Redemptoristen widmet sich dem Leben und Wirken ihres Ordensgründers Alfons von Liguori. Als Adelssohn, 1696 in der Nähe von Neapel geboren, schon im zarten Alter von 16 Jahren Doktor der Rechtswissenschaften, stieg Alfons aus seiner anmaßenden gesellschaftlichen Welt aus und studierte Theologie. Zunächst betreute er Obdachlose und am Rande der Gesellschaft stehende Jugendliche in Neapel, später Hirten und Bauern auf dem Land, die von der herkömmlichen kirchlichen Seelsorge komplett vernachlässigt wurden.
Aus dieser Begegnung erwuchs der Impuls, eine missionarische Gemeinschaft für die benachteiligte Landbevölkerung im Königreich Neapel zu gründen, den er 1732 realisiert. Der innere Antrieb der neuen Gemeinschaft sollte sein, das Leben und die Tugenden Jesu Christi möglichst vollkommen nachzuahmen. In der Volksmission sollte den Menschen die Liebe des Erlösers nahegebracht werden.
Alfons selbst war ein hinreißender Prediger, seine einfache Sprache überzeugend. Als Bischof wirkte er als ein "Vater der Armen" und engagierte sich für ein Programm zur Rehabilitierung von Prostituierten, auf dem Gebiet der Moraltheologie leistete er einen großen Beitrag, indem er das strikte Befolgen bzw. Festhalten an Gesetzen ablehnte und die theologische Betrachtung der menschlichen Person in ihrem Dienst und ihrer Würde, von ihrem Gewissen und von der göttlichen Barmherzigkeit aus in den Mittelpunkt rückte. 1787 starb er als großer Kirchenmann, 1839 wurde er heiliggesprochen.
