For a Song and a Hundred Songs: A Poet's Journey Through a Chinese Prison, by Liao Yiwu

WINNER OF THE 2012 GERMAN BOOK TRADE PEACE PRIZE

In June 1989, news of the Tiananmen Square protests and its bloody resolution reverberated throughout the world. A young poet named Liao Yiwu, who had until then led an apolitical bohemian existence, found his voice in that moment. Like the solitary man who stood firmly in front of a line of tanks, Liao proclaimed his outrage—and his words would be his weapon.

For a Song and a Hundred Songs captures the four brutal years Liao spent in jail for writing the incendiary poem “Massacre.” Through the power and beauty of his prose, he reveals the bleak reality of crowded Chinese prisons—the harassment from guards and fellow prisoners, the torture, the conflicts among human beings in close confinement, and the boredom of everyday life. But even in his darkest hours, Liao manages to unearth the fundamental humanity in his cell mates: he writes of how they listen with rapt attention to each other’s stories of criminal endeavors gone wrong and of how one night, ravenous with hunger, they dream up an “imaginary feast,” with each inmate trying to one-up the next by describing a more elaborate dish.

In this important book, Liao presents a stark and devastating portrait of a nation in flux, exposing a side of China that outsiders rarely get to see. In the wake of 2011’s Arab Spring, the world has witnessed for a second time China’s crackdown on those citizens who would speak their mind, like artist Ai Weiwei and legal activist Chen Guangcheng. Liao stands squarely among them and gives voice to not only his own story, but to the stories of those individuals who can no longer speak for themselves. For a Song and a Hundred Songs bears witness to history and will forever change the way you view the rising superpower of China.

From Booklist
Chinese poet and musician Liao Yiwu recounts the unflinching tale of his impassioned dissidence, subsequent imprisonment, and eventual escape from his home country’s notoriously tight borders. He begins with the death of his sister in 1988, one year before the infamous events of Tiananmen Square that sparked Liao’s protest poem, “Massacre,” which cost him four years in prison. He endured squalor, suffered the abuse of drunken officers, and survived multiple suicide attempts, all the while scribbling notes and fragments that would accumulate to form this memoir, published overseas to international acclaim. Because memoir deals in remembrance, certain passages may sound sensationalized or embellished. But that does not detract from Liao’s clever characterization, fast-paced prose, or enticing storytelling. Now living as an expat in Berlin, Liao continues to denounce China’s ruling class and its so-called state writers, people employed to produce propaganda, among whom Liao includes Nobel laureate Mo Yan. An incendiary exposé and fitting follow-up to God Is Red (2011), Liao’s account of Christianity in China. --Diego Báez

Review
"Liao began his memoir in 1990 on the backs of envelopes and scraps of paper his family smuggled into prison. He managed to sneak out his manuscript when he was released. But twice it was confiscated, and he had to reconstruct it from memory both times." —The New York Times

"A dizzying, and often gruesomely graphic, testimony of vicious brutality and indignities large and small. The title of Mr. Liao’s latest book is from the time a prison guard who heard him sing required him, as a punishment, to sing 100 songs. When Mr. Liao’s voice gave out after 20 or so songs he was severely beaten and had an electric baton shoved up his body."—The Wall Street Journal

"Poet Liao Yiwu's account of four years spent in a Chinese prison is raw and disturbing yet also a deeply human and essential read…A stirring memoir that highlights the lives of those from the bottom rungs of society." —Christian Science Monitor

"It shocks our senses, disturbs our minds, entertains us with dark humor and inspires us with examples of indomitable human dignity and decency. The book follows the best tradition of prison memoirs and presents a powerful indictment of a brutal dictatorship...[For a Song and a Hundred Songs is] destined to be a classic on its literary merits alone." —The San Francisco Chronicle

"Mr. Liao is a poet…with a poet's observant eye and soaring imagination. For a Song and a Hundred Songs is a compelling and harrowing read, full of details about the laogai system and stuffed with portraits of those subjected to it, from politically naive and idealistic students and Christians to murderers, rapists, thieves and embezzlers." —The New York Times, Arts section

"Outraged by violent suppression of the democracy movement, a poet incarcerated for his art offers a harrowing look inside China. Liao’s powerful memoir makes clear that while China is eager to thrust upon its head the heavy crown of a world superpower, its flesh is riddled through with corruption and cannot bear the weight." —Washington Independent Review of Books

"This is not a book about dissidents but rather a powerful, beautifully written memoir describing the lives and personalities of those living near the bottom of an unforgiving society. One of the strongest China books of the past few years." —South China Morning Post

"Liao does not consider himself a political writer. Instead, he believes he is merely a chronicler of truth, of people’s stories." —Epoch Times

"The sheer drama of Liao Yiwu’s odyssey—from poet to prisoner Number 099 to one of China’s most acclaimed writers-in-exile—is matched only by the journey that brought this book to publication. The memoir of his four years in prison is riveting, painful testimony—a vital new chapter in the story of China’s rise." —Evan Osnos, staff writer at The New Yorker

"Liao’s work is an amazing testament to the people who are battling the Chinese police state." —Kirkus Reviews

"Reminiscent of Jung Chang’s Wild Swans in its outspokenness, this book offers a frightening reminder of China’s human rights abuses. Liao has succeeded in writing a sensitive and lyrical account focusing on both the cruelty and the heartwarming experiences of his prison years." —Library Journal

"This vivid and lyrical memoir, a future classic, should have wide appeal as a consummate insider account of Chinese state terror." —Publishers Weekly, starred review

"At once brutal and brutally funny. Liao's meticulous portrait of the societal microcosm between cell walls—replete with its cast of foreign ministers, chairmen, scholars, and counter-revolutionaries—reads like a hybrid of Swift and Orwell." —Slate

"Chinese poet and musician Liao Yiwu recounts the unflinching tale of his impassioned dissidence. An incendiary exposé and fitting follow-up to God Is Red." —Booklist

"Wenguang Huang's translation of For a Song and a Hundred Songs brings a new voice and story to a larger tradition. The prose moves between straightforward, no-nonsense accounting of fact and event, which makes for a quick, page-turning reading, and a neat, keen attention to all details." —Three Percent, University of Rochester

"One of the most important documents of political imprisonment and torture about China ever written." —The Daily Beast

"For a Song and a Hundred Songs documents how a poet’s soul descends into the body of a dissident…The book abounds with tender moments of unfailing empathy. China could take a lesson from Liao Yiwu, if it at all understands or cares about the meaning of dignity." —Beijing Cream

"Courageous and powerful. Unforgettable." —Jung Chang, author of Wild Swans and co-author of Mao: the Unknown Story

"For a Song and a Hundred Songs opens our eyes….[it is] a book of tremendous literary force. The author’s linguistic prowess renders it disturbingly cold and invitingly warm, angry and charismatic at once." —Herta Muller, recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature and author of The Hunger Angel

"One of the most original and remarkable Chinese writers of our time." —Philip Gourevitch, author of The Ballad of Abu Ghraib

"Reading Liao Yiwu's memoir transported me to his world, in a very visceral way. Liao guides us through harrowing scenes, but the narrative is frequently punctuated by poetic moments when art and truth transcend the horrors." —Alison Klayman, director of Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry

Couldn't put it down!!!
By William C. Robinson
this is a great story about a very closed society and the harsh abuse done to the citizens....these insights are truly remarkable and Liao story a must read for anyone interested in world affairs....dealing with the Chinese government requires us to know the human rights violations which are beyond any standard of decency. I recently read of lawyers being sentenced to jail while fighting for freedom...this book shows how similiar all societies are to those incarcerated justifiably and as political prisoners...I am glad he got out of China and I recommend everyone read this book...quite an eye opener...totalitarianism and authoritarian regimes are just as bad as DASH theocracies...great story and clearly a great man to live through this sad experience...

A Fascinating and Disturbing Look at life in China for a Dissident
By Geoffrey B
I came to this with some expectations that missed the mark. First of all, I expected more poetry. Second of all, I expected a more heroic author. However, in this case life has forced bravery and passion out of a man who, when younger, was sort of a drifting poet. Indeed, he missed the demonstrations in Beijing because he'd gone back to his home province after failing to win enough acclaim at a poetry contest. And even as the riots started, those around him were more interested in what was going on than he was. But finally, the news got to him and the poem, Massacre, came tumbling out in response.

After copies of the poem, Massacre, began circulating the poet found himself pulled into the life of a Chinese dissident without his really intending it. Soon, he was part of a movie project to commemorate those who died at Tienanmen Square but also all victims of oppression throughout history. And then, one day, as he left the place where they were editing the film, the police greeted him and a new life began, as a political prisoner.

The horrors of the Chinese prison, notably the "menu" of tortures, are awful. But the falling in and out of favor with prison officials, and the struggles with other prisoners, are pretty familiar stuff. The rivalry between cell blocks 2 and 3 and the author's sneaking away to hang out with pals from cell block 3 is at times faintly reminiscent of Hogan's Heroes - the life of the prisoner running his own prison experience.

What shocks me, reading this memoir, is the energy the Chinese state manages to find for dealing with these dissidents. The prison tortures, for example, were horrible, but not nearly so chilling as contemplating the idea that when this one man and a few friends got identified, the government was suddenly able to lay hands on everyone they had talked with and round up their group, interrogate friends and family and, in effect, make being a dissident a risk not just to oneself, but to the entire social microcosm one inhabits. One wonders where China could be if they could take the energy used to keep a lid on things and direct it toward something more productive.

Our poet/author is no heroic figure. He did all he could to stay away from politics till the government's outrages became too much to bear. Which makes all the more dramatic the steps the Chinese government took to deal with him. In the U.S., a guy like this would be shouting on a street corner somewhere. Which makes you wonder why he's such a threat in China. This book is a must read, not for its shocking details, but for the realization that the buzzing, humming China we keep hearing about has something like this going on in the background. It exposes the underbelly of a system that tries to have economic freedom without political freedom and therefore trying to harness the energy of the people for an economy and society that views the individuals who form it not as an asset but as a threat.

It tolls for us...
By NyiNya
Hard to believe its been almost a quarter of a century since the world watched events unfold in Tiananmen Square. 100,000 students gathered to honor the memory of Hu Yaobang, a political reformer, critic of China's autocratic government and its entrenched corruption who believed in democratic process. To us in the West, it seemed naïve and innocent: A bunch of kids pushing the envelope, doing what kids should do, which is protest the status quo, annoy the grownups and shake things up. After all, the climate in China had changed. Deng Xiaoping was running the show, and Deng...as we all knew, was a sensible man, forward thinking, even. But when 100,000 students turned into one million demonstrators demanding reform, it smacked of revolution. Deng gave the order and on June 4, The Protest became The Massacre.

Liao Yiwu was never a hero. He worked hard at being a badass, drinking and getting into fights. His interest in politics was nil but he needed a job and he could write, so he signed on with the some minor public relations division of the Chinese government, churning out laudatory stories, articles and poetry about China, its government and leaders. Still, he couldn't keep his mouth shut, and despite being a paid propogandist, occasionally penned a poem or two criticizing his employers. Deng was not Mao, right. The government welcomed free thinking, right? After Tianamen, Liao realized it was New Boss Same as The Old Boss and he went with his conscience, not his employers, writing an incendiary poem dedicated to those who were killed on June 4. He called it "Massacre." And his bosses did not approve.

To show him the error of his ways, to reform his thinking, and perhaps even restore this poor strayed lamb to the herd, they arrested him and sentenced him to four years in hell.

All prisons are bad (except, I understand, for those in Sweden and Denmark where reason and reform, not righteous retribution, are the basis of the penal code), but there are certain spots in the world where you know they are going to be really, really bad. Really. China is definitely one of them. Words like "brutality" are barely adequate to describe the experience. Going from one prison to another, subjected to starvation, physical and psychological torture, Liao tried to kill himself on several occasions, suffered any number of mental breakdowns, and survived only by eventually attaining an incredible self-discipline. Cold, sick, hungry and battered, he shared cramped cells with ordinary crooks, white collar criminals, street thugs, political prisoners, men who were insane or mentally challenged, gangsters and the merely unlucky. His fellow prisoners preyed on one another, occasionally helped one another and sometimes formed bonds, complex relationships, and even became friends. It's through their stories, through hearing about their lives and circumstances, that Liao is able to reclaim his sanity, reconnect with the world and find ways to survive from one day to the next.

When he finished his sentence, Liao learned that his wife and daughter decided life would be better without him and refuse any contact. His friends aren't returning his calls either. He is completely alone in the world and blackballed by the government...which meant no job, no way to get one, and no place to live. Nobody will hire a man with political prisoner stink all over him, nor will they rent him a room. He was a cipher, a nonbeing, with no hope. Liao slept on the streets of Chengdu and earned pennies by begging and playing the flute for passersby...a skill he picked up from one of his fellow prisoners. As a non-person in his own country, he asked his government for an exit visa sixteen times. He got sixteen turndowns. And by the way, he did not learn his lesson and was still writing critical poetry. When it looked like he was going to become a guest of the government again, he opted out via the back door, slipping across the Vietnamese border and eventually ending up in Berlin.

This is an exceptionally moving book, similar to and almost on a par with Nien Cheng's "Life and Death in Shanghai" about her experiences as a political prisoner two decades earier. I think it's important for Americans to read both. Like the song says, You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone. When we welcome the so-called protection promised by a government that wants us to trade our liberty for more security, we've already got one foot on the banana peel. And it's not like it can't happen here. Pointing a finger at China is easy...but let's not forget Kent State. The only difference is in the body count...it could easily have been a Tianaman Massacre, given more protestors and more armed kids dressed up in National Guard uniforms. Reading this book gives us some important food for thought. So does Liao's poem. I've included some excerpts in the comments section if you'd like to take a look.

Thanks for your patience.

Review
"The book contains all the info you'll ever need to know and is an essential title for you to become an expert on fuel injection." (TotalKitCar Mag (UK) 2010-03-01)

From the Back Cover
So you’ve decided that fuel injection is for you, but want to know more. Many questions surround what appears to many as more of a black art than science. Engine tuning used to be the hallowed ground of vehicle engineers and cutting-edge hot rodders. For years, the carburetor filled the needs of enthusiasts and provided simple adjustments at the end of a flat-bladed screwdriver. But today, electronic controls for engines are the norm. Even the casual enthusiast, who actually drives his favorite hot rod on the streets, can easily see the benefit of increased precision when he fires the car up for the first time each spring. A properly tuned EFI system rarely needs anything more than the turn of the key to come to life. Following up his best-selling title, Engine Management: Advanced Tuning, author Greg Banish goes in-depth on the combustion basics of fuel injection as well as benefits and limitations of standalones. Learn useful formulas, VE equation and airflow estimation, and more. Also covered are setups and calibration, creating VE tables, creating timing maps, auxiliary output controls, and a start-to- finish calibration example with screen shots to document the process. Useful appendixes include glossary, tuning example, and conversion charts.

About the Author
Greg Banish is a powertrain calibration engineer for one of the world's largest auto manufacturers where his daily routine includes reviewing engine performance and emissions data using the latest in industry technologies. He also operates Calibrated Success, Inc. (http://www.calibratedsuccess.com), a consulting and training firm where he works with some of the top names in the performance industry and teaches classes across the country.

Buy this book!
By Pontisteve
Greg is an OEM calibrator who actually went to college for this stuff. He's worked at Ford and GM, in the tuning department. He's had his own tuning shop. He teaches tuning. He teaches SCT's Advanced Tuning class. This is his second book. I've read them both, and attended his SCT class. I can guarantee that they don't come any sharper than him, when it comes to tuning.

As an added bonus, he seems to know how to write in way that's easy to understand, no matter what your experience level. I've read lots of other tuning books, been to EFI University and read Ben Straders book as well, and in my opinion none of them are near as good as this book. So go buy it.

This book covers speed density computers more specifically, such as FAST, Big Stuff, Accel, etc. But the details in it still apply to all tuning. His other book, Engine Management: Advanced Tuning covers the Mass Air cars (most OEM EFI systems) a little more closely. Either way, if you're trying to learn to tune, or want to know more about how EFI works, buy both books. Unfortunately, I can't say very good things about any of the other tuning books I've read. Most are poorly written, way to short and simple, or just don't help much.

Get the Paperback instead of the Kindle Edition!
By Rebecca of Amazon
As a Christian I found the combination of psychology and biblical stories to be very enlightening. David Stoop really has a command of the "talk yourself to sanity" idea. This book seems to have been written in the 80s so some of the information is a little outdated. However his take on "The Secret" before it was popular is interesting. Apparently people were trying to manifest material things way back then with disappointing results.

The only thing I think I disagreed with the author about is anger. I'm much happier now that I get angry far less often. I don't think anger is a healthy emotion if you are getting angry all the time. Some self-talk may help you in this case. In fact this book claims that anger and fear are responsible for major illnesses.

I feel this book will appeal mostly to a Christian audience, however it will also appeal to those patient enough to deal with the Kindle book which has a outdated font. At least it looks like the book was scanned into a computer after being typed with a faulty typewriter. All the "e's" are especially annoying. Yes I had to talk my way through this book to keep reading. I'd suggest the paperback instead of the Kindle version.

However, despite this the book has some value even 32 years later. It has a lot of wisdom and focuses on how attitude makes or breaks us. This book will also help those who are prone to worry or who are very stressed out by their thoughts.

Practical - Easy to Follow - Read it when things aren't going well
By D. jones
This is the most practical book on controlling thoughts I've ever read.

Being made over again in His image requires active participation in controlling our thoughts or as Paul says "...taking every thought captive..."

This is the best practical book out there on how to get more control of thoughts and take them captive. Buy it.

Practical Korean: Your Guide to Speaking Korean Quickly and Effortlessly in a Few Hours, by Samuel E. Martin

A handy introduction to the Korean language that is concise, simple, and useful.

This book has been written to fill a specific need: that of the hundreds of thousand of people now visiting Korea for business or holidays or even living there for a year or two, who wish to learn something of the spoken Korean language around them. The grammatical structure of Korean is particularly complex, and difficulties plague foreign students learning Korean. Samuel E. Martin, renowned Asian language expert and professor emeritus at Yale University has simplified some of the common problems to acquaint the reader with the most useful way to say a lot of everyday things, without having to memorize long lists of grammatical rules. The compact size makes it ideal for traveling to Korea or reading on a plane, train or bus.

The student will quickly make progress learning to comprehend and speak Korean. The material is presented using the romanization method of written Korean that is officially authorized by the Korean government as well as the native Korean script (Hangeul). Practical Korean is grouped into 47 lessons that cover all the common topics of conversation, grammar and vocabulary.

Review
"I have been studying this book for the last few weeks, and while I am not, by any means, fluent in Korean, I feel as if I have gained more understanding. Will you be speaking Korean quickly and effortlessly in a few hours? It depends on how well you can speak Korean before picking this gem up. If you have never uttered a word outside of 'Annyeonghaseyo', then probably not. Don't let that discourage you though! Pick up this book and see how far you can go with it." —Beyond Hallyu blog

Don't buy or even look at this book
By Amazon Customer
Wow! I bought this book at Barnes and Noble a few months ago for my trip to Korea to brush up and learn some proper spelling / expand vocabulary.

Background: I am Korean, born in Korea - Korean was my first language. I moved to America at 4 years old and kind of lost my Korean (mom still speaks to me in Korean, and I use it if I have to). Korean has a simple alphabet with set rules for pronounciation with some acceptions. As I could read, write, and speak Korean as a child, I have the basics of the basics down and am familiar with how things should sound. I need to work on expanding vocab, proper spelling for words, and improve on sentence structure.

Getting back to the book, as soon as I went to the first lesson there was a pronounciation error. It says "ae" (ㅐ) is pronounced like "a" in "cap," "sack," or "ham." WHOA, red flag. This is basic: "ae" or "애" pretty much sounds the same as what he used as "e" (ㅔ) pronounced like Spanish e (eh) or e in "met". It should have explained this way that ㅐ and ㅔ have the same pronounciation. I just saw that and my mind was blown because people are buying this and learning incorrectly how to pronounce a vowel that is so commonly used. I have attached an image of this (the first and second page of Lesson 1, pg 8 and 9). If you look at my image, it says to pronounce "새" as "sae". Yes, this is how you would write sae in English, but "ae" should be pronounced as "eh" (just like "ㅐ" or like the "e" in "leg"). If the reader tried to pronounce 새 (sae) the way the book describes with sound of "a" in "cap" or "ham", the reader would develop bad habit of pronouncing "ㅐ" completely incorrectly. Korean does not even have a vowel sound like "a" in "cap" or "sack". This "a" sound is actually a sound Koreans have a hard time pronouncing when speaking English AS they would use ㅐ or ㅔ (eh sound) when writing "cap" or "sack" and end up pronouncing it as "cehp" or "sehk".

I have no idea who this Samuel learned Korean from. If he learned from a Korean or Koreans, there must of been a huge misunderstanding, and the Koreans must have just got what he was saying so he thought how to pronounce things was correct when he is so wrong... and he wrote an effing book about it WOWW. Did no Korean person proof it though? There are so many Korean people everywhere to ask.... I mean.... before a book is published.... shouldn't... a Korean look at the book and edit it?Safe assumption... going by his name, Samuel Martin and his incorrect teaching for pronounciation, he is not a native speaker. I just can't believe this guy wrote and published a book that is teaching how to pronounce Korean incorrectly to I don't know how many people - how awful. Samuel E. Martin, I am sure he has a huge Korean vocabulary (as he wrote this awful book) and can communicate in Korean, but he's got the basics - the M effing basics - wrong, and he is not the guy to learn Korean from. He also wrote 최 as "choe" - this is actually a really popular Korean last name, but he should have wrote it like "choi" - the common way. He DID get the pronounciation on this right though (he described "oe" sounds like "e" in wet in this case - so it would be pronounced as "cheh") - not quite exactly how natives would pronounce 최 (choi), but very similar and good for a new learner to be understood.

Bottom line, don't do it. Don't get this sorry book. I am mad that I paid $13 for this. I don't trust it, and I wouldn't even want to give it away for someone to incorrectly learn. How sad.

Compact and useful
By Mountain Climber
As another reviewer said, the title is deceptive . . . you can't learn any foreign language "quickly and effortlessly in a few hours," as the subtitle of this book promises. But this book is a compact and exceptionally useful handbook of the most essential aspects of Korean. It has 47 "lessons" that are very short (short enough to digest one in about 15-20 minutes of study each) and cover individual topics such as "where things are" (inside, outside, left side, behind, etc.) or "honorifics" or "what the weather looks like." These individual lessons allow a reader to dip into a particular topic of interest and get quick answers without being forced to read all the prior lessons. The biggest downside of this book is that it has no audio (no CD, no online audio recordings). But if you are using Rosetta Stone to learn Korean, this book is an excellent accompaniment--and that is why I give the book 5 stars. If you use it together with Rosetta Stone Korean, you will indeed learn Korean very quickly and logically, as I did.

A couple of misnomers in the title, but ok...
By Muzzifer
If I were to learn Korean I might start with this book. The misnomers in the title, of course, are references to speaking Korean quickly and effortlessly in a few hours...I don't think anyone can do that with any language, even an easier-to-learn (for English speakers) language like Spanish! Still, the author is Samuel E. Martin, a name I've known since graduate school studies in Japanese - his name was on much of what we learned. So I see he's brought his meticulousness and compassionate approach to Korean as well; this is a strong selling point for me.

The pronunciation guide comes at the front, though, and after that you are on your own. Even though all entries are written in Hangul and abcs's, Korean pronunciation requires a little review before getting started...thus, this is not a speak on the run travel book; it is a bit more of a textbook. But probably a great place to begin your Korean studies! I was sent a free copy of this for my review.

Completely misleading
By Lanie C
Even though I purchased this book at an introductory price, I feel it was $8.35 wasted. It falls far short of my expectations. If I could give it zero stars, I would.

One: The book is called "Meals in a Jar," and yet the preferred technique to prepare this food for long term storage uses something called a "retort pouch." So it's not about storing dry food in a container packed with an oxygen absorber; it's a book about pressure canning wet/cooked foods. Even the cover photo features dry ingredients stored in JARS. This book should have been entitled, "Meals in a Retort Pouch." Of course, if it had been, I never would've purchased it.

Two: There's no resources section in the front or back of the book for finding the products mentioned, like the retort pouches. The one link that appears in the book doesn't carry them (I checked this last night. They have mylar bags, but they don't have retort pouches of any size.). So good luck even finding them anywhere, since Amazon doesn't currently have them available.

Three: Her method makes MASSIVE amounts of food. I mean, putting together recipes with ingredient lists involving 16 cups of rice. If you're preparing for a small family or couple, the recipes are less than useless, since many of them make enough food for eight meals that feed six or eight EACH.

Four: Pressure canning is not "quick and easy," as this method is described on the cover. As one reviewer here said, "If you are a beginner and want to use this book, please be aware that you should learn to pressure can, and gather up the proper equipment." Guess how many hundreds of dollars and many hours you'll spend learning all that, before you can even BEGIN to use this book. Like I said, this option is neither quick, easy, nor cheap. I've made meals in jars using dry food and that process is very simple AND quick to prepare the food when needed. This process is very convoluted and difficult in contrast. And I don't know that the end-result is worth all the extra cost and work when dry food and an O2 absorber in a mason jar works far better and can make very tasty food.

Five: The brief how-to section on "canning" with a retort pouch didn't give much information. She makes it seem like you can use a household iron to seal the pouches and then pressure can them. This doesn't seem like an effective or safe way of sealing the pouches. The industry-standard equipment to process these retort pouches -- chamber vacuum sealers -- cost hundreds or even THOUSANDS of dollars. Do you really think your consumer iron and pressure canner will be sufficient to safely process your food? I don't.

Six: There's no information in the recipes giving shelf-life of the processed meals. "How long will this be good or safe to eat" is a pretty important piece of information which is completely overlooked. How can I know how long these meals will be good for, when she doesn't include that information? I'm not risking my family's safety on this, thanks.

I should have been wary when in the blurb about the author, it mentions she has a "dinner planning website," but the URL isn't given. When I did a web search on the author's name, I couldn't even find this alleged website. Why wouldn't she provide a URL in her bio? She hiding something?

Don't waste your time or money on this book; it isn't what you want. There's plenty of good and free information and recipes available on the web for storing meals in jars or mylar bags; this isn't a good resource for such information. Chef Tess the Bakeresse is far more helpful. I have her book, too, and even though some of it is disappointing, it's far more useful than this one will ever be.

Dangerous directions
By Julie Cascio
This book, Meals in a Jar, has inaccurate information. There is NO properly tested process times for retort pouches of food at home. If this author has paid for thermal process authority development, then fine, but she does not indicate that anywhere in this book. Instead she lists USDA processing times to be used with retort pouches and this is NOT SAFE. USDA process times are intended only for use in the jars or cans listed on the National Center for Home Food Preservation website, recent Cooperative Extension Service publications and in the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning.
The process time is an issue as a cold spot (slowest heating spot) would have to be determined to measure adequate heating during the process time. In a jar or can, in a "still" canning situation like a home canner, the container sits still inside the heating medium of water or steam. Heat penetrates throughout the container in a predictable pattern.
The size and shape of a container and then placement inside a water bath or pressure canner makes a difference to the heating pattern and ultimately the process time for a food. You cannot just transfer a canning process from a jar to a pouch of similar size.
Certainly the product dimensions would suggest that retort pouches could be processed in home canners, but in order for heat transfer to be effective specialized equipment is needed to maintain package integrity. Additionally, the pressure in this type of pressurized canner is higher than in a home canner; thus the temperature used for processing is higher. to process a retort pouch without overpressure you risk significant seal failure and product safety concerns
Other factors that influence process time include the quantity (or fill weight) of food in the container and initial temperature as it goes in the canner. High quality food also relies on exhausting air out of the jars as much as possible. In jars, venting is expected to happen while in the canner, before the lid seals to the jar. In metal cans, there is usually a preheating process before cans are sealed or a complete enough fill there is little residual air before the can is sealed up. Exhausting air out of the pouch before sealing is not addressed in this book.
In addition, specialized equipment is needed to seal a reportable pouch, not the method suggested by the author.

Absolutely Brilliant Food Storage Ideas.
By J.C. Keller
I have been canning for more than 30 years. So, I have water bath canners, pressure canners, and a food dehydrator and a vacuum sealer already. I am already familiar with the correct USDA methods for canning meats, which is required for many of the main dishes. So I was thrilled with this book which takes things a step further and combines canned meats with other ingredients which you get ready ahead of time and combine in a meal kit. Essentially, you are making ready-to-eat meals at home that are shelf stable. It's a good way to stock a pantry, prepare for emergencies, or have home-made convenience food on hand. However, you don't have to be an expert to use this book. The basics are right there, and the author does remind people to check the USDA guidelines as well. That statement made me trust the recipes all the more. If you are a beginner and want to use this book, please be aware that you should learn to pressure can, and gather up the proper equipment.

This book is not for the type of person who wants to toss a few ingredients in a jar and call it a meal. This book is for those who want to truly create meals ready to eat, from scratch, at home, and are willing to put in the work it takes to do that. These will be convenience foods later, but you do have to prepare them first. The thing is, you are often making 16 meals at once with these recipes. It's going to take some work in the kitchen--but on the day-to-day basis when you come home late from work and don't have time or energy to mess--you have it all done and food prep will just take minutes. So put in the time at the beginning, have short work of it later.

If you already are the kind of person who stores food for emergencies, like I do, then you may already have a lot of the ingredients needed for some recipes on hand. For example, I have things such as dehydrated asparagus and carrots and onions in my pantry already. I also have a food dehydrator and can make my own. But people not used to using these things may be put off by the recipes in this book. Those who store dried foods, however, will find this book a treasure trove of ways to use and rotate their food storage. This is not just book a for "preppers," though. It's designed for people who like to do a lot of food preparation at once so they don't have to do it later. That you can also stock your pantry is a huge side benefit.

There are dozens of recipes that appeal to me and that I plan to try. I will update my review later when I try some of them. I am in the process of getting together some ingredients I need first. My only disappointment with this marvelous new book is that there are no gluten-free alternatives. However, that's a minor complaint because I am capable of converting recipes and plan to do so with some of them. For example, instead of wheat pasta, I will use rice pasta. Instead of regular flour, I will use gluten-free flour and xanthan gum.

There are recipes for everything from omelets made from dried eggs and canned or dried sausage to beef jerky, and some potential favorites look like the turkey pot pie and the pulled pork. The book includes advice about ingredients, and suggestions on where to begin if you are overwhelmed. If your goal is stocking your pantry, it is suggested that you start with vacuum sealing some sides such as noodles, rice or polenta first, then when you have canned your meats, these are ready to add to your meal kit. Recipes for beverages and desserts are included, too.

My family enjoys camping and I can see that having meal kits already prepared that we could just take with us would make the whole trip more fun for me, the cook. While I don't anticipate having to flee my home because of a flood or tornado, I do live in New Hampshire and ice storms have knocked out our power for up to two weeks at a time. The recipes in this book will fill my shelves with meals that can be heated up on my wood stove if I had to.

I feel that the title of the book might make people think it's simply a matter of tossing dry ingredients in a quart jar to create a meal, but it truly is more than that. You must be able to store the jars properly, and be able to seal them so ingredients don't spoil. This is the basic premise of any kind of food preservation, which is what canning, dehydrating, and vacuum sealing is all about. I think that when some see the title "Meals in a Jar" they are remembering that fad awhile back for gifts in a jar where you just layer ingredients and stick on a bow with instructions. This is more involved, but as a seasoned canner, this book excites me, inspires me, and I can't wait to get started. THANK YOU Julie Languille for this concise, clever book. I am absolutely thrilled with it. (and if you've read my reviews, you will see I am not easily impressed)

The Shape of the Journey: New & Collected Poems, by Jim Harrison

Here is the definitive collection of poetry from one of America’s best-loved writers—now available in paperback. With the publication of this book, eight volumes of poetry were brought back into print, including the early nature-based lyrics of Plain Song, the explosive Outlyer & Ghazals, and the startling "correspondence" with a dead Russian poet in Letters to Yesenin. Also included is an introduction by Harrison, several previously uncollected poems, and "Geo-Bestiary," a 34-part paean to earthly passions. The Shape of the Journey confirms Jim Harrison’s place among the most brilliant and essential poets writing today.

"Behind the words one always feels the presence of a passionate, exuberant man who is at the same time possessed of a quick, subtle intelligence and a deeply questioning attitude toward life. Harrison writes so winningly that one is simply content to be in the presence of a writer this vital, this large-spirited."--The New York Times Book Review

"(An) untrammelled renegade genius… here’s a poet talking to you instead of around himself, while doing absolutely brilliant and outrageous things with language."—Publishers Weekly

"Readers can wander the woods of this collection for a lifetime and still be amazed at what they find."—Booklist (starred review.)

When first published, this book immediately became one of Copper Canyon Press’s all-time bestsellers. It was featured on Garrison Keillor’s Writer’s Almanac, became a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and was selected as one of the "Top-Ten Books of 1998" by Booklist.

Jim Harrison is the author of twenty books, including Legends of the Fall and The Road Home. He has also written numerous screenplays and served as the food columnist for Esquire magazine. He lives in Michigan and Arizona.

From Publishers Weekly
Known for his fiction (Legends of the Fall; The Road Home; Wolf) and for his essays (Just Before Dark), Harrison has also been a prolific, ambitious poet. This expansive "new & collected" volume restores to print all his verse, from the lyrics and protest-poems of Plainsong (1965), through the effusive Letters to Yesenin (1973), the Zen-inspired After Ikkyu (1996), and the new miscellany of nature-verse and prose-poems Harrison calls "Geo-Bestiary." Harrison's works share a self-confident ease, a desire for simple lyricism and an unbuttoned, slouching, at-home feel; he conceives of poems as hikes, rambles, tours of his mind and his lands: "walking to Savage's Lake where I ate my bread/ and cheese, drank cool lake water and slept for a while." (The landscapes are often those of Northern Michigan, where Harrison lives.) In a sheaf of ghazals from 1971, Harrison's lyricism turns brilliantly campy, with distichs leaping and leaping like cats: "Yes yes yes it was the year of the tall ships/ and the sea owned more and larger fish." Later poems, reminiscent by turns of Gary Snyder, Robert Bly and Raymond Carver, specialize in diaristic noticing?of trees, of drinking, of sex ("She offers a flex of butt, belly button, breasts")?or else in quotable wisdom: "Even our hearts don't beat/ the way we want them to." But even these retain saving moments of flannel-clad, pine-forest camp: "I have to kill the rooster tomorrow. He's being an asshole,/ having seriously wounded one of our two hens with his insistent banging."

From Booklist
Harrison is most readily identified with his fiction, including Legends of the Fall, Wolf, and, just out, The Road Home , but, as he explains in the striking introduction to this superb collection, it is his poetry that means the most to him. He equates writing poetry with creating cave paintings or petroglyphs, so intrinsically human is the urge to express the life of the soul, and his poems do make the temporal timeless. Beginning with spare and lovely poems from Plain Song (1965), Harrison offers the best of seven subsequent collections, including the heart-revving howl of Letters to Yesenin (1973) and the Zen-influenced After Ikkyu (1996), followed by a set of new poems that go off, like fireworks, with a bang followed by a radiant bloom. A man temperamentally unsuited to cities and academia, Harrison is drawn to the endlessly enlightening beauty of nature and sustained by the awareness of mind kindled by the practices of writing, Zen Buddhism, and walking the earth. Readers can wander the woods of this collection for a lifetime and still be amazed at what they find. Donna Seaman

Jim Harrison has shaped my life as a writer
By A Customer
I first read Jim Harrison's poems almost thirty years ago in the Crawford County library in Grayling when I was at the beginning of a long teaching trail. Harrison saved my life that day and he has almost every day since. I return, almost daily, to his work which serves as a "shock tippet" against the "stuff" of the world. I don't think anyone comes close to his ability to chronicle the spirit of the natural world...the language he speaks comes from the most secret of places.

Cabin Poem
By Keith Moore
"I have decided to make up my mind about nothing, to assume the water mask, to finish my life disguised as a creek,.."-from Cabin Poem. I met Jim Harrison once in New York. He and Russell Chatham signed the books I had collected by Harrison. My first thought was how could this gruff large loud man with one glass eye write such moving literature and poetry? How could he write with such realism and romance and with such deep spirituality and beauty? How does he know these things? I realised in the same moment that others must have felt the same about Hemingway. We have genius among us.

LIKE WALKING THROUGH A BEAUTIFUL FOREST
By Dorothy Weiss
Author Jim Harrison says, "this book is the portion of my life that means the most to me". His poems vividly reflect the truth of his words. He writes about himself, his journey through life in outrageous and brilliant language weaving images of nature and earthly passions. Pause, and wander through the forests of this collection. It is lovely, lyrical and passionately beautiful.
