Odessa: Poems (Lindquist & Vennum Prize for Poetry), by Patricia Kirkpatrick

A grim prognosis, brain cancer, leaves the speaker in Kirkpatrick’s Odessa fighting for her life. The tumor presses against her amygdalae, the “emotional core of the self,” and central to the process of memory. In poems endowed with this emotional charge but void of sentimentality, Kirkpatrick sets out to recreate what was lost by fashioning a dreamlike reality. Odessa, “roof of the underworld,” a refuge at once real and imagined, resembles simultaneously the Midwestern prairie and a mythical god-inhabited city. In image-packed lines bearing shades of Classical heroism, Kirkpatrick delivers a personal narrative of stunning dimension.

From Booklist
As this classically restrained, valiantly imagined, and profoundly affecting narrative sequence begins, Kirkpatrick brings us to a place of wind, birds, wheat, soybeans, and corn. “Some fields are so gold they seem to be singing,” but they “will be harvested with blades.” This ominous note signals the start of a journey into shock and loss, remedy and recovery. Body and mind are aligned with the small prairie town of Odessa and vast open landscapes as Kirkpatrick tracks the painful subtraction of an unsought divorce, stringent legal rituals, and rough redefinition of self, home, and purpose. But these traumas pale in comparison to the discovery of a brain tumor pressing on the very seat of emotion and memory and endangering the core of her narrator’s being. “The brain, like the earth, lies in layers,” she muses, and, as her medical odyssey unfolds, Odessa becomes an underworld of dreams and myth, quest and risk, metamorphosis and renewal. Kirkpatrick descends, returns, and reports with stunning lucidity, “Small fires burn faintly / but don’t go out.” Beautifully forthright and ringing. --Donna Seaman

LINDQUIST & VENNUM PRIZE FOR POETRY WINNER

MINNESOTA BOOK AWARD WINNER

Praise for Odessa

"In Odessa, a new collection of poems by Patricia Kirkpatrick, the self collides with the dismay of the actual. The speaker’s diagnosed with brain cancer, faces divorce, and watches her children leave. The good news is that Kirkpatrick’s precise use of language, humor, and philosophical insight transform such experiences into a sustained and sustaining beauty—impeccably crafted poems that warrant reading and rereading.... Reading Odessa calls to mind Audre Lorde’s 'Poems Are Not Luxuries,' an essay that examines how self-scrutiny feeds the imagination and the work of poetry.... Though written in a different time and context, Lorde’s understanding of what good poems can and should do applies precisely to what Kirkpatrick achieves—fearless poems that have been written out of necessity and that are thus vitally important."
—Jim Zukowski, The Rumpus

“Among the many talents that contemporary American poetry offers, Patricia Kirkpatrick’s Odessa shines a fierce white light. This book provides a fusion of unsentimental, realist fidelity
to the subject and intense, metaphorical imagination. The speaker of these poems tells the story of her suffering from a brain tumor, and her survival, with a precise and steely focus. At the same time, she leads the reader into a landscape that’s both identifiable as the contemporary Midwest and also enchanting, ghostly—the terrain of a lucid dream. The emotional power of Kirkpatrick’s poetic narrative corresponds here with her mastery of craft. In nervy sentences and phrases, in sinuous and firm lines, all of which show the imprint of deeply lived experience, this poet proves Robert Frost’s claim, ‘No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise for the writer, no surprise for the reader.’ I am convinced that Odessa will move its readers for many, many years to come.”
—Peter Campion, author of The Lions and Other People, 2012 Lindquist & Vennum Prize Judge

“One of the speakers in these compelling poems declares, ‘I am writing to say I have been opened and closed.’ That is the truth of this book, its small map and enormous journey. With those and other simple words we are led—powerfully—into the difficult but calm reverie of discovery no matter the condition or circumstance of the treasure. As the poems show, we make this sojourn together even as the details make news of us all.”
—Alberto Ríos, author of Dangerous Shirt and The Smallest Muscle in the Human Body

“The nearness of grief and illness haunt the deep currents of this book to the extent that the present moment cannot be verified. The world is familiar and strange at the same time. If what once was known appears to return, it comes back changed. Thus the consciousness of this grave book must be finely calibrated—and it is. The reader is brought into the presence of a mind learning itself for the second time. Most of us only experience such wonder once. I am moved and lifted by these stark poems.”
—Maurice Manning, author of The Common Man and Bucolics

“Patricia Kirkpatrick’s Odessa is an astonishing achievement. Like Tomas Tranströmer, Kirkpatrick understands what is rational but false; what is irrational but true. Supremely lyrical, brilliantly imagined—this is poetry of the highest order. In these pages, ‘Beauty and suffering/ keep making the world.’”
—Connie Wanek, author of On Speaking Terms and Hartley Field

“As you read them, the poems in Patricia Kirkpatrick's Odessa ache in your hands. They will ache in your mind and memory, too, for a long while after you close the book. They ache with the inescapable beauty of landscapes that remind us of human loneliness—you can hear the grasslands sighing in these pages, hear birds great and tiny calling to each other as they try to find their way home. And they ache with longing for a self strong enough to survive the physical and psychic wounds that have confined it to rooms where flowers cannot grow and the wind cannot scour the soul clean of pain. This is a remarkably honest and deeply loving collection of poems. I haven't read anything quite so moving in a very long time.”
—Eleanor Lerman, author of Our Post-Soviet History Unfolds and The Sensual World Re-Emerges

Praise for Century’s Road

“The voice in these poems is too troubling to be called meditative (unless meditative means to be reconciled with trouble), yet too compassionate and deeply patient to be called troubled (unless we mean unseated by beauty or bewildered by transience and eternity). These poems own all of these characteristics. I’m sure they will find space in many hearts.”
—Li-Young Lee

“Earthy, intensely womanly, these poems vividly portray birth, family issues, and postulate a threnody of sorrow. The language is powerful.”
—Maxine Kumin

“Patricia Kirkpatrick’s poems bring a deep inquiry to her experience and a rich and expansive imagination into the world of the senses and things. They range through many aspects of human life, probing old age and midlife as well as pre-birth, raising questions of presence as well as absence. I find myself taken by their unsentimental tenderness—a mark, I believe, of all good lyric poetry.”
—Jane Hirshfield

“Century’s Road is a beautiful and generous book. Here is the world as we need it to be in poems: full of large, unavoidable terrors and the seemingly small but necessary moments of joy that allow these poems to become acts of love. Patricia Kirkpatrick’s poems give us the world as it truly is.”
—Jim Moore

"Among the many talents that contemporary American poetry offers, Patricia Kirkpatrick's Odessa shines a fierce white light." — Peter Campion, author of The Lions and Other People, 2012 Lindquist and Vennum Prize Judge

Near Odessa

Near the end of summer.
Wheatfield with lark. With swift,
longspur, and sparrow. I see the birds
opening tails and wings
above grasses
and hidden nests.
Soybeans with bells, yellowing, green
tassels of corn, geese
again and again.
I see the birds
but wind takes all the sound.
Small towns are reduced to chains or storefronts,
boarded-up.
Almost to the river called a lake, gray stones of water,
dammed, white-capped, hinge
between states.
Some fields are so gold they seem to be singing.
The gold fields lie down, flat but not empty,
and will be harvested later with blades.
Near Odessa
I come to a place where the end is beginning.
Where the light is absolute, it rises.

The Lease, by Mathew Henderson

Inspired largely by the poet's experiences as a young man working in the Saskatchewan oilfields, Mathew Henderson's The Lease explores masculinity and the roles morality, violence, and hard labor play in it. Equal parts character study, cultural documentary, and coming-of-age narrative, Henderson's poems make it clear that however we may try to stay apart from them, the stubborn and often unflattering realities of masculine culture persist, not just in isolated, dangerous environments like this, but in our very idea of what work is.

No mark survives this place: you too will yield
to unmemory. Give everything you are
in three-day pieces. Watch the gypsy iron
move, follow its commands.
Tend the rusted steel like a shepherd.

Mathew Henderson lives in Toronto, Ontario, writes about the prairies, and teaches at Humber College. The Lease is his first collection of poetry.

Review
'The Lease cuts into its primary subjects -- grease, technology, physical labor, alienated sex, mud, fear, profoundloneliness -- like a welder's oxyacetylene flame. [...] I've read moreadept books of poetry than The Lease in the past six months, with more self-conscious chaos and precision wordplay. But I've readnone that I was more eager to run through again in my mind.'

Stunning debut
By Robert Weir Barrett
I read the NYTimes review, and I thought, OK, I'll give it a try.

This is a brilliant first book. The poems are centered around working the oil and gas "leases" in Western Canada. This is fascinating in itself, as it is rare to read about real work and workers in poetry (or novels for that matter.) What is even more impressive and interesting is Henderson's mastery of language, of poetic form. In no way do his anti-prosaic prosaic works resemble prose. His poetic senses are fully alert; he is so closely attuned to the voices and lives he describes that this reader felt encompassed emotionally and linguistically by his accurate, sad, observant, yet loving words and worlds.

I am the worst poetry snob you can imagine. I have read thousands of poems; I love poetry. But of the modern poets, the only ones I continually return to are Bishop, Larkin, Merrill, Schuyler, and O'Hara. Of writers working today...hmmm.... some Mark Doty, some August Kleinzahler, not much else.

And happily, Mathew Henderson resembles none of these poets. He opens new ground in his first book. I wonder what he will do next?

Stellar!
By Sion Hampton
Having worked all over the oilpatch for over a decade, I came into this assuming it was going to be written with a condescending tone, or be the whining of some academic who spent a few months on a coil tubing unit and assumes he "knows" the patch. I was very pleasantly surprised. The author sums up a newcomers feelings in the oil field in a very relatable way. I frequently found myself thinking back to my first few days on a drilling rig, or in a gas plant. This guy truly gets it, and I look forward to his future writings.

By IT Project Manager
Great poetry, got a terrific review in the New York Times. Why am I the first to review? Bought it via Kindle and liked it so much I then bought it at a bookstore as well. Observant poetry about real life doing isolated oil field work.

    From the Publisher
With Krakatoa proving to be a volcanic event in publishing, interest in Pacific Ocean maps is higher than ever before. But while current maps are useful, the antique maps truly fascinate. Ancient maps of Oceania hold mysteries as old as time - were these early guides molded as much by fantasy as fact? Why did mapmakers take liberties with some of their subjects? Early Mapping of the Pacific bravely delves into these questions.

Opening European eyes on the Pacific
    By Harry Eagar
"The European mapping of the Pacific was at times a mapping of the European psyche," writes Thomas Suarez.

The mere fact that the Europeans did it, at such cost, was an aspect of a unique psychological outlook. The people who lived in and around the Pacific never bothered.

There were a variety of reasons, some merely technical, for that. For whatever reasons, the indigenes were content with local maps. The drive to know the whole world did not inspire them.

The Europeans had crass motivations as well. After 300 years of effort, there were still a few spots unknown to them in 1800 -- and even as a big a place as Hawaii had been found barely two decades earlier. But in the 19th century the quest for "sandalwood, trepang, seals, whales and furs" exposed every last scrap of land to purchasers of European maps.

"Early Mapping of the Pacific" follows on Suarez's gorgeous "Early Mapping of Southeast Asia" and will have even more interest for Hawaii readers. Hawaii gets more detailed attention than anyplace else, and it is easy to see that Suarez has spent plenty of time here.

He writes that "often the mapping and exploration of the Pacific seems the stuff of novels," and his own late entry into the field was, if not novelistic, distinctly unusual.

A classical violinist, Suarez was giving concerts way off Broadway -- places like Moen island in Chuuk in Micronesia -- when he became interested in the places, the people, the stories and the maps.

For a generation, he's been an authority and consultant on old maps.

Even without the detailed text, it is easy and curious to follow the progress -- sometimes regress -- of European knowledge of the Pacific over time.

When the Pacific was completely unknown to Europe, the best maps Europe had already showed close correspondence with the shapes and locations of the Caribbean and Africa, though the Caribbean had been unknown 20 years earlier.

Often -- not always, by any means -- the Europeans in their restless inquisition acquired accurate maps almost overnight. Even in fairly early maps, some parts of the Pacific begin to look quite familiar, though others remain seriously confused. It took a long time, for example, to learn that Australia and New Guinea are not connected.

Even by the time of James Cook, a buyer of maps in Amsterdam or London had to choose between very different opinions about what lay in the Pacific.

One topic that Suarez devotes considerable attention to is whether the Spaniards found Hawaii before Cook did in 1779.

There are early maps that show islands about where Hawaii is.

Suarez is not persuaded that they represent anything more than the other fugitive islands that cartographers in Europe were led and misled to draw on maps even into the 19th century.

There is an even stronger argument against Spanish discovery.

The maps that show "Hawaii" show other islands to the east and to the west that we know do not exist, and the accuracy of these maps for the west coast of America is poor also.

If "Hawaii" on those maps is genuine, it is the only part that is.

Excellent introduction to the topic suitable for map collectors
    By gehghis
The author does an excellent job of describing and illustrating key milestones in the mapping of the Pacific region. He integrates the history of exploration and of cartography in an effective manner that adds life to the plentiful and abundant maps that illustrate the text. The book is an excellent introduction for the serious collector of antique maps of the Pacific. Its a beautiful book and informative book, however, it could be a difficult read at times for those less interested in maps or history.

This book is for all contemplating marriage, partnership, divorce, becoming an item, living together or whatever!
It is also a must read for any endeavouring to guide and counsel others. It is also for the rest of us.
It is light-hearted but gives sound Biblical teaching on true romance. It provides a clear and reasoned presentation together with vast experience of the authors of the steps leading up to a successful marriage.
The book takes account of the fact that God appeared on the scene of human history as a matchmaker - an intimacy revealed first between God and man and then between man and woman - a pattern He has ordained to stand unchanged until the end of human history.
The miracle Jesus performed, changing water into wine showed how much He cared about marriage and how much He aligned Himself with His Father.
There is an area of holy mystery about this book that is revealed for the reader.

    Sharing the Wealth: My Story
    By A Customer
In my opinion, Sharing The Wealth: My Story by Alex Spanos is a must read, a gift to people across-the-board, no matter their station in life. I feel this book can be an inspiration to those just starting out in life, as well as a wake-up call to those millions of us who need to re-evaluate our lives, our values and our goals. A real Horatio Alger character, Alex possessed a spirit that could not be shot down by the lack of money, connections, education, or background to realize success beyond his wildest dreams. His father and mother had the same kind of spirit when they chose to leave their native Greece and to raise their family in America. His love of family, his devotion to his beautiful and soul-sustaining wife, Faye, his heritage, and his business adventures never wavered in the face of adversity. Very early on, Alex mustered up the courage to step outside the box by walking out the basement door of his father's bakery, with no job, no money and a wife with child. What Alex did have was faith, and an unshakable confidence in self, and right or wrong, he trusted his own decisions. Alex took full responsibility for his actions, taking risks and creating his own opportunities and never looked back.

    By John McCormick
Wow, how refreshing to read a bio on someone so smart, straight forward and real...A great true story of rags to riches. Amazing how he started out and busted his butt for everything he has today. And with all of his money and power, he still lives in the town he grew up in, has helped his hometown alot and has all of his family working with him. Very inspiring and a true all american success story that I enjoyed reading alot.

This book is about one man's success. It's about the key events in his life and his response to them based on the best of his religious, family, and cultural values. It's a true rags to riches story and a timely reminder that there is just no substitute for the American Dream- a dream that is still alive and well for anyone with more of an eye towards opportunity rather than simply "security".

The original Shelby Cobra left an indelible imprint on the automotive landscape. This nimble English roadster, powered by a raucous Ford V-8, set new performance standards, won countless races, and became an iconic supercar. The Shelby Cobra was only in production for six short years and only about 1,000 cars were made, but Cobra aficionados yearned for and revered these cars. As a result, companies have manufactured and sold Cobra replica kit cars from the 1970s to today. Author D. Brian Smith, former editor-in-chief of Kit Car magazine, shows you each crucial step in assembling a modern Cobra replica, and in particular, he profiles the most popular Cobra kit car―the Factory Five Cobra Mk4. In fact, assembling other Cobra replicas is similar to assembling the Mk4. He guides you through selecting the right Cobra kit car for a particular budget and performance goals, and then shows how to plan, organize, and acquire the necessary tools. An authoritative buyers guide helps you choose the ideal kit. In addition, selecting the best engine and transmission according to performance goals and budget is explained in detail. Most importantly, detailed step-by-step captions and photos show you how to put together each major component group of the car so you assemble a strong-running, reliable, and safe Cobra replica. An easy-to-follow method for buying a pre-owned Cobra replica shows you how to inspect, evaluate, and test drive a particular car because some want to own and drive a Cobra replica, but don’t want to assemble one. Excellent Book
    By Jim F.
Excellent book covers everything you need to know about building a factory 5 roadster, I'm in the process of building one right now and although the manual has a lot of information there are certain areas of the build that are not clear, this book has clarified most of my problems that I have encountered, I highly recommend this book for anyone that has bought a roadster or even if your thinking about buying one it will give you a lot of insight on what is required for the build.

    Good Book
    By Daniel G Burrill
This is an excellent book for anyone that has an interest in building a kit Cobra or any other kit car, for that matter. The build principles are all very similar. D. Brian Smith has done a great job walking us through the various stages of build-up that are required to complete a car that is somewhat complex and requires a fair amount of ability, knowledge, and money. Brian has covered all aspects of the build which makes this a good book for anyone thinking about doing one of these cars. Brian used a Factory Five car for his build, which is a good car to use because the kits are well made. There are many Cobra kits on the market today, so there are a lot of choices. The photography is good and the process is logical and easy to follow. I would like to have seen more manufacturers mentioned, but I realize there are only so many pages, and there is a lot of material to cover. So overall, I think this is a well thought out book and if you just want to know about what is required, or if you really want to build one of these cars, then you will find this book to be a valuable resource.

Penelope Doyle todavía tenía que encontrar a un hombre que no se convirtiera en rana al primer beso y, cuando el peor ejemplo de la especie humana le robó el corazón y sus ahorros, juró no volver a creer en cuentos de hadas.

Abhidhamma Studies: Buddhist Explorations of Consciousness and Time, by Nyanaponika

The Abhidhamma, the third great division of early Buddhist teaching, expounds a revolutionary system of philosophical psychology rooted in the twin Buddhist insights of selflessness and dependent origination. In keeping with the liberative thrust of early Buddhism, this system organizes the entire spectrum of human consciousness around the two poles of Buddhist doctrine - bondage and liberation, Samsara and Nirvana - the starting point and the final goal. It thereby maps out, with remarkable rigour and precision, the inner landscape of the mind to be crossed through the practical work of Buddhist meditation.

In this book of groundbreaking essays, Venerable Nyanaponika Thera, one of our age's foremost exponents of Theravada Buddhism, attempts to penetrate beneath the formidable face of the Abhidhamma and to make its principles intelligible to the thoughtful reader of today. His point of focus is the Consciousness Chapter of the Dhammasangani, the first treatise of the Abhidhamma Pitaka. Basing his interpretation on the detailed list of mental factors that the Abhidhamma uses as a guide to psychological analysis, he launches into bold explorations in the multiple dimensions of conditionality, the nature of consciousness, the temporality of experience, and the psychological springs of spiritual transformation. Innovative and rich in insights, this book does not merely open up new avenues in the academic study of early Buddhism. By treating the Abhidhamma as a fountainhead of inspiration for philosophical and psychological inquiry, it demonstrates the continuing relevance of Buddhist thought to our most astute contemporary efforts to understand the elusive yet so intimate nature of the mind.

    EXCERPT

Chapter 1: The Abhidhamma Philosophy: Its Estimation in the Past, Its Value for the Present

The High Esteem for the Abhidhamma in Buddhist Tradition

The Abhidhamma Pitaka, or the Philosophical Collection, forms the third great section of the Buddhist Pali Canon (Tipitaka). In its most characteristic parts it is a system of classifications, analytical enumerations, and definitions, with no discursive treatment of the subject matter. In particular its two most important books, the Dhammasangani and the Patthana, have the appearance of huge collections of systematically arranged tabulations, accompanied by definitions of the terms used in the tables. This, one would expect, is a type of literature scarcely likely to gain much popular appreciation. Yet the fact remains that the Abhidhamma has always been highly esteemed and even venerated in the countries of Theravada Buddhism.

Two examples taken from the chronicles of Sri Lanka illustrate this high regard for the Abhidhamma. In the tenth century C.E., on the order of King Kassapa V, the whole Abhidhamma Pitaka was inscribed on gold plates, and the first of these books, the Dhammasangani, was set with jewels. When the work was completed, the precious manuscripts were taken in a huge procession to a beautiful monastery and deposited there. Another king of Lanka, Vijayabahu (eleventh century), used to study the Dhammasangani in the early morning before he took up his royal duties, and he prepared a translation of it into Sinhala, which however has not been preserved.

What were the reasons for such an extraordinary esteem for material that appears at first glance to consist of no more than dry and unattractive textbooks? And what actual importance do the two basic works of the Abhidhamma in particular, the Dhammasangani and the Patthana, still have today? These are the questions that we shall attempt to answer here.

In considering the reasons for this high esteem and regard for the Abhidhamma, we may leave aside any manifestation of faith, more or less unquestioning, that evokes in the devotee a certain awe owing to the very abstruseness and bulk of these books. That apart, we may find a first explanation in the immediate impression on susceptible minds that they are faced here by a gigantic edifice of penetrative insight, which in its foundations and its layout cannot well be ascribed to a lesser mind than that of a Buddha; and this first impression will find growing confirmation in the gradual process of comprehending these teachings.

According to the Theravada tradition the Abhidhamma is the domain proper of the Buddhas (buddhavisaya), and its initial conception in the Master's mind (manasa desana) is traced to the time immediately after the Great Enlightenment. It was in the fourth of the seven weeks spent by the Master in the vicinity of the Bodhi Tree that the Abhidhamma was conceived. These seven days were called by the teachers of old "the Week of the House of Gems" (ratanaghara-sattaha). "The House of Gems" is indeed a very befitting expression for the crystal-clear edifice of Abhidhamma thought in which the Buddha dwelt during that period.

The Abhidhamma as System and Method

Those who have an eye for the ingenious and the significant in the architecture of great edifices of thought will probably be impressed first by the Abhidhamma's structural qualities, its wide compass, its inner consistency, and its far-reaching implications. The Abhidhamma offers an impressive systematization of the whole of reality as far as it is of concern to the final goal of the Buddha's teaching--liberation from craving and suffering; for it deals with actuality from an exclusively ethical and psychological viewpoint and with a definite practical purpose.

A strikingly impressive feature of the Abhidhamma is its analysis of the entire realm of consciousness. The Abhidhamma is the first historical attempt to map the possibilities of the human mind in a thorough and realistic way, without admixture of metaphysics and mythology. This system provides a method by which the enormous welter of facts included or implied in it can be subordinated to, and be utilized by, the liberating function of knowledge, which in the Buddha's teaching is the essential task and the greatest value of true understanding. This organizing and mustering of knowledge for such a purpose cannot fail to appeal to the practical thinker.

The Abhidhamma may also be regarded as a systematization of the doctrines contained, or implicit, in the Sutta Pitaka, the Collection of Discourses. It formulates these doctrines in strictly philosophical (paramattha) or truly realistic (yathabhuta) language that as far as possible employs terms descriptive of functions and processes without any of the conventional (vohara) and unrealistic concepts that assume a personality, an agent (as different from the act), a soul, or a substance.

These remarks about the systematizing import of the Abhidhamma may perhaps create the impression in the reader that the Abhidhamma is no more than "a mere method with only a formalistic function." Leaving aside the fact that this is not so, as we shall see later, let us first quote, against this somewhat belittling attitude, a word of Friedrich Nietzsche, himself certainly no friend of rigid systematization: "Scientific spirit rests upon insight into the method."

For the preeminently practical needs of the Buddhist the Abhidhamma fulfills the requirements stated by Bertrand Russell: "A complete description of the existing world would require not only a catalogue of the things, but also a mention of all their qualities and relations." A systematic "catalogue of things" together with their qualities, or better "functions," is given in the first book of the Abhidhamma, the Dhammasangani, a title that could well be rendered "A Catalogue (or Compendium) of Things"; and the relations, or the conditionality, of these things are treated in the Patthana.

Some who consider themselves "strong-minded" have called systems "a refuge of feeble minds." While it must be admitted that the conceptual labels supplied by systems (including the Abhidhamma) have often been misused as a surrogate for correct comprehension of reality, this does not mean that the fault lies in systematic thought itself. The fault lies, rather, in the attitude with which a system is developed and the use to which it is put. If systematic thought is cautiously and critically applied, it can fulfill a valuable function, providing "weapons of defense" against the overwhelming assault of innumerable internal and external impressions on the human mind. This unceasing influx of impressions, by sheer weight of number and diversity alone, can be either overpowering and fascinating or else confusing, intimidating, distracting, even dissolving. The only means by which the human mind can assimilate this vast world of plurality (papanca), at least partly, is with the aid of systematic and methodical thought. But systems may also be "aggressive weapons" when wielded by a mind that through its power of understanding tries to control and master the numerous experiences, actions, and reactions occurring in our inner and outer world, subordinating them to its own purposes.

The Abhidhamma system, however, is not concerned with an artificial, abstract world of "objects in themselves." Insofar as it deals with external facts at all, the respective concepts relate those "external facts" to the bondage or liberation of the human mind; or they are terms auxiliary to the tasks of the understanding and mental training connected with the work of liberation.

The basically dynamic character of the Abhidhamma system, and of the concepts it employs, goes far in preventing both rigidity and any artificial simplification of a complex and ever-changing world--the faults that those inimical to them find in all "systems." System and method bring order, coherence, and meaning into what often appears to be a world of isolated facts, which becomes amenable to our purposes only by a methodical approach. This holds true for the system of the Abhidhamma, too, in regard to the highest purpose: mind's liberation from ignorance and suffering.

    Excellent, surprisingly enjoyable and practical.

Although my own practice centers around the Mahayana teachings of Tibetan Buddhism, recently I have found it very helpful to spend some time studying and practicing the older, more original approaches from the early days of the Buddhist tradition. In that regard, this small gem of a book has been quite a find! It deals, as the subtitle says, with "Buddhist explorations of consciousness and time" through a historical and philosophical account of the third set of the Buddha's teachings, the "basket" of wisdom. Although the subject matter is rigorously discussed from a philosophical standpoint, the book is anything but dry philosophy. Here, in enjoyable and fairly straightforward language, the author brings alive the fundamental Buddhist analytical and synthetical approaches for understanding of the nature of reality, and yet makes this potentially academic study reverberate wonderfully into such practical areas as the need for pure moral discipline, as well as pointing the way to more effective training in meditative tranquility and insight. I think this is one to keep on the bookshelf and re-read and study again from time to time as one's practice deepens, and it will also serve undoubtedly for me as a starting off point for a wealth of further studies, contemplations and meditations.

    A philosophical gem
    By Tom Corsus
In Abhidhamma Studies, the Ven. Nyanaponika Thera has done something truly unique. For many of those who have a cursory acquaintance with its contents, the Abhidhamma is an impenetrable thicket of terms and tables. It is seen either as the dense high philosophy of monks who succeeded the Buddha, or the loftiest teachings of the Buddha, meant for gods and enlightened monks.

In this book, Nyanaponika Thera brings the Abhidhamma down to Earth and gives us just a glimpse of the insights it yet waits to unfold. In his introduction, Nyanaponika Thera argues that the Abhidhamma is only relevant as an organic, growing discipline engaging the minds of courageous and insightful souls. This work is not a dry summary of the contents of the seven books of the Abhidhamma, but an introduction to the method of the Abhidhamma.

The book begins with a brief contextualization of the Abhidhamma. The Abhidhamma is the third "basket" of the Pali Canon, the canonical scriptures of Theravada Buddhism. It consists of seven books, and these seven books are largely composed of lists of terms, definitions, and classification schemata. The origin of these books, however, is a subject of dispute.

One of Nyanaponika Thera's primary aims in this book is to show the profundity of these books. The degree of rigor, consistency, depth, breadth, and purpose one finds in the Abhidhamma cannot help but suggest the presence of a sublime mind. As the author unpacks a small fragment of this teaching, one becomes mesmerized by the subtlety of this system. More importantly, the practical application of the system becomes readily apparent.

The purpose of the Abhidhamma is not to systematize and classify all of reality as an intellectual curiosity. Its true aim is to systematize the reality experienced by the mind relative to the goal of liberation. Without this focal point, the system of Abhidhamma would be left chasing its own tail, attempting to prove its own suppositions. However, because liberation provides both the ground and the aim of this system, many of the questions which plague metaphysical systems become moot. For instance, the question "what is a phenomenon?" is replaced by the question, "what are the characteristics of phenomena?" In the view of liberation, it is very important to realize that phenomena are impermanent, impersonal, and unsatisfactory. Beyond this, it is not relevant to attempt to define phenomena in terms of something else.

The Abhidhamma is a great boon for anyone attempting to understand causality at a deeper level. Nyanaponika Thera gives a beautiful exposition of the system's two-fold method of analysis and synthesis. Through analysis, the Abhidhamma dissolves the solidified reality of "I" and personality into a multitude of mental factors. Through synthesis, the Abhidhamma shows the relations which exist between these factors, and how they challenge or support one another.

Nyanaponika Thera's insights will mirror the experience of all those who have taken some time to witness the mechanics of their own mind. More importantly, his writing offers a tool to refine our own observations. A critical insight offered by the author is that the way we observe can affect the course of what we are observing. For instance, we might find that our mind is see-sawing between agitation and tranquility. If we focus unwisely on the agitation, we may very well increase the agitation to the point where tranquility leaves the scene altogether. Similarly, if we focus wisely on the tranquility, the agitation may very well subside. The author offers many examples of how mental factors engage and balance one another, and for those who are devoted to maintaining continuous mindfulness, these observations are invaluable.

Abhidhamma Studies succeeds on multiple levels. As an introduction to the system and method of Abhidhamma, it reveals this branch of the Pali Canon to be a perennial philosophy, a body of thought which not only provides timeless philosophical, psychological, and ethical insights, but also opens myriad channels of exploration and exposition. As applied Abhidhamma, it demonstrates the power of both the system and the method, delivering practical insights for anyone engaged in serious meditation. Most importantly, this work demonstrates the value of a clear and focused mind directed toward understanding the subtlest mechanics of reality. It invites us to establish a continuous awareness of the causal mechanics of our mind, destabilizing the ego and paving the way to wisdom.

For those with a philosophical inclination, this book is a nourishing gourmet meal. Enjoy!

Best book on Early Buddhist notions of self and mind.
    By James Ryan
Nyanaponika introduces Early Buddhist philosophical psychology in detail. He shows that the common and superficial understanding of the Buddhist theory of self - according to which the theory is a mere list of the parts of a self - is wrong and overlooks the Abhidhamma (probably because it is an abstruse section of the Buddhist canon). The theory includes an often overlooked but sophisticated and plausible description of functional relations amongst the parts of a self, and Nyanaponika shows this with astonishing vivacity. This shows that the Early Buddhist theory was an early scientific psychology of a functionalist sort: a monumental acheivement in human intellectual history. All the while, he skilfully shows how the theory is logically connected with the Buddhist notion of psychological self-refinement and nirvana. Still, Nyanaponika and the Abhidhamma ideas he explains seem at times to rely on a dubious empirical method: the introspections of ancient Buddhist masters (which may have included the Buddha himself) who wrote the Abhidhamma texts. As a consequence, some of the descriptions of the parts of the self and their functions seem vague or implausible. Also, although Nyanaponika is good at explaining the philosophical as well as the psychological, one might have liked a bit more discussion of the structure of what appears to be an underlying Buddhist argument that there is no self. The book is of interest to philosophers and psychologists.
