The Lease, by Mathew Henderson

Inspired largely by the poet's experiences as a young man working in the Saskatchewan oilfields, Mathew Henderson's The Lease explores masculinity and the roles morality, violence, and hard labor play in it. Equal parts character study, cultural documentary, and coming-of-age narrative, Henderson's poems make it clear that however we may try to stay apart from them, the stubborn and often unflattering realities of masculine culture persist, not just in isolated, dangerous environments like this, but in our very idea of what work is.

No mark survives this place: you too will yield
to unmemory. Give everything you are
in three-day pieces. Watch the gypsy iron
move, follow its commands.
Tend the rusted steel like a shepherd.

Mathew Henderson lives in Toronto, Ontario, writes about the prairies, and teaches at Humber College. The Lease is his first collection of poetry.

Review
'The Lease cuts into its primary subjects -- grease, technology, physical labor, alienated sex, mud, fear, profoundloneliness -- like a welder's oxyacetylene flame. [...] I've read moreadept books of poetry than The Lease in the past six months, with more self-conscious chaos and precision wordplay. But I've readnone that I was more eager to run through again in my mind.'
- Dwight Garner, The New York Times

'A sneakily brilliant, beautiful work ... Writing that's meant to beread, like light through ice, hard and clear and true. Try not to shield your eyes.' - The Millions

Stunning debut
By Robert Weir Barrett
I read the NYTimes review, and I thought, OK, I'll give it a try.

This is a brilliant first book. The poems are centered around working the oil and gas "leases" in Western Canada. This is fascinating in itself, as it is rare to read about real work and workers in poetry (or novels for that matter.) What is even more impressive and interesting is Henderson's mastery of language, of poetic form. In no way do his anti-prosaic prosaic works resemble prose. His poetic senses are fully alert; he is so closely attuned to the voices and lives he describes that this reader felt encompassed emotionally and linguistically by his accurate, sad, observant, yet loving words and worlds.

I am the worst poetry snob you can imagine. I have read thousands of poems; I love poetry. But of the modern poets, the only ones I continually return to are Bishop, Larkin, Merrill, Schuyler, and O'Hara. Of writers working today...hmmm.... some Mark Doty, some August Kleinzahler, not much else.

And happily, Mathew Henderson resembles none of these poets. He opens new ground in his first book. I wonder what he will do next?

Stellar!
By Sion Hampton
Having worked all over the oilpatch for over a decade, I came into this assuming it was going to be written with a condescending tone, or be the whining of some academic who spent a few months on a coil tubing unit and assumes he "knows" the patch. I was very pleasantly surprised. The author sums up a newcomers feelings in the oil field in a very relatable way. I frequently found myself thinking back to my first few days on a drilling rig, or in a gas plant. This guy truly gets it, and I look forward to his future writings.

I wish there were more
By IT Project Manager
Great poetry, got a terrific review in the New York Times. Why am I the first to review? Bought it via Kindle and liked it so much I then bought it at a bookstore as well. Observant poetry about real life doing isolated oil field work.
