Probably indispensable

"The Ecology of Kalimantan" is an 800-page reference work on the status of the environment in Indonesian Borneo, otherwise known as Kalimantan. It's also the third volume in the series "The ecology of Indonesia".

I only skimmed this volume, but it does look promising.

There is a general introduction to Borneo, and more specific chapters on various habitats. Coastal habitats include rocky shores, beaches and beach forests, coral reefs, mangrove etc. The section on fresh water habitats deal with rivers, lakes and swamp forests. Further chapters cover lowland rain forests, cliffs and caves, or Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak on the island. There is also a chapter on man-made lakes. In short, we are dealing with a competent, encyclopaedic reference work!

The chapters on resources and conservation have "deep green" and ZPG overtones, although not as extreme as in the book on Oman I reviewed earlier. How readers react to this part of the book, will no doubt be a function of their political convictions.

Nevertheless, "The ecology of Kalimantan" is probably indispensable for scientists and others dealing with ecological problems in this particular part of Indonesia, and therefore I give it four stars.

Excellent binding and organization

I enjoyed the quality and feel of the binding, and the pages held up well over countless hours of reading. Webber provides a corrective

In this volume, Robert Webber, Myers Professor of Ministry at Northern Baptist Seminary continues the "ancient-future" theme from previous works, the Ancient-Future Worship website, Ancient-Future Faith, and anticipates the soon-to-be-released Ancient-Future Time. In this book Webber presents a model for evangelism and discipleship-and therein lies his worthy contribution to the subject of churches and evangelism: the authentic reclamation of evangelism as a vital part of what the church does as part of its disciple-making mission. Specifically, he reminds his readers that the Great Commission is "not only to evangelize, but to make disciples" (p. 13). Part 1 provides a historical survey of evangelism in the church, and then reclaims the early church traditions for the contemporary church. He identifies four distinct stages of evangelism-conversion, discipleship, spiritual formation, and Christian vocation-and suggests three accompanying "ancient-future" rites of passage that can be adapted to any church tradition.

In chapter 1 Webber provides a survey of how Christians have been evangelized and formed as disciples throughout the centuries. In chapter 2 he looks at the development of the process of Christian formation in the ancient church, while in chapter 3 he shows how the church may evangelize in today's world. Here Webber contributes significantly to the conversation on evangelism by stressing how evangelism happens by way of a community of faith.

The final three chapters in Part 1 explicate the process of discipleship formation (one he claims can happen within a six-month period) that comes after initial evangelism and conversion: initial discipleship, introduction to the spiritual life, and Christian vocation. Webber argues that this approach is universally applicable in churches, regardless of culture or denomination.

In Part 2 Webber argues that the contemporary church exists in a culture that is very much like that of the first three centuries-a secular, non-Christian, narcissistic culture where an individualistic and ego-centric milieu has given rise to an eclectic spirituality. In this context, Christianity is perceived as just one kind of "spirituality" among many. Weber demonstrates how the four-fold process of faith formation is interwoven with three informing theological principles: (1) Christ is victor over evil, (2) the church is a witness to God's salvation, and (3) worship is a witness to God's mission as accomplished in Jesus Christ.

Webber is intentional in the organization of the book, putting his description of the practice of making disciples first, before talking about matters theological. This is in keeping with his concept that "experience precedes reflection-an ancient principle that was reversed by modernity" (p. 16). Webber challenges churches to stop "reinventing" themselves in ways that accommodate the culture, and instead return to the countercultural vision of the community of faith as modeled by the early church. His prophetic challenge that the future of evangelism and Christian formation will take place in community (in contrast to traditionally individually-focused understandings of evangelism and conversion), alone is a message worth the price of the book. This is a worthy addition to the dialogue on evangelism, discipleship, and Christian faith formation.

Nothing particulary new...

I read Ancient Future Faith and was really blown away at Webbers insightfulness. Most authors have one book in them and then they continue to write other books that are spin offs of the main idea. This book is attempting to deal with evengelism in the postmodern world, but unfortunately it left me wanting. I didnt feel like I left the book with any practical way of implementing his ideas. In fact, I would have been just as well off with just reading Ancient Future Faith and leaving it at that. Chapter 3 was a good chapter on Evangelism and he has a great bibliography in the back of the book, but I would just read that chapter and not buy the book.

Evangelistic Discipleship: Back to the Future

I have thoroughly enjoyed Robert Webber's Ancient-Future series, and I recently completed Ancient-Future Evangelism. Webber was an evangelical theologian that urged the church to look backwards as it looked forward; to find strategies for reaching the post-Christian world in the faith formation strategies of the pre-Christian world of the early church. As the book flap states, the book presents "A model of evangelism and discipleship firmly rooted in Scripture, attested to in the history of the church, and authentic to the postmodern world in which we live.

Webber's tone is gracious, and his style is academic but easily accessible to all readers. He seemlessly weaves in quotes from ancient church leaders from Athanasius, Tertullian, and Augustine to modern authors such as Robert Clinton, Rick Warren, and Marvin Olasky.

Ancient-Future Evangelism focuses on the topics of faith formation, spiritual growth, and discipleship. It is both a primer in church history and a practical manual for implementing discipleship in our churches today. Webber begins by demonstrating that evangelism and discipleship are not two separate activities, but two parts of the same process of spiritual growth.

I'm particularly fascinated by Webber's encouragement to use rites of passage to help people define and mark their spiritual journeys. In most evangelical churches, the only two such rites are baptism and communion. At National Community Church, we are very intentional and strategic about trying to draw out the rich symbolism and to make them meaningful for participants. But I believe there are other rites of passage that the evangelical church could implement to help their people mark their steps. How can we help people cross the line of faith? How can we help them progress through different stages of spiritual development?

Webber uses the last section of the book to remind us of the story of our theology and how that story can be communicated to post-modern ears. His thesis is that we do not need new methods; we simply need to communicate the ancient truths of Scripture in a way that is understandable in a postmodern and post-Christian context.

I'm not quick to jump out and implement everything Webber advised, but his books always stretch me outside my current thinking, and they help me think critically and theologically about why we do what we do. If you are new to the Ancient-Future series, I would recommend reading Ancient-Future Faith first and then Ancient-Future Time.

He is also head teacher and spiritual director at the Greater Boston Zen Center, and one of the guiding teachers of Boundless Way Zen. He is a full member of the Soto Zen Buddhist Association and the American Zen Teachers Association, and is a friend of the Lay Zen Teachers Association. Josh has served on the Board of Directors for the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies, and on the planning committee of the first-ever Next-Generation Dharma Teachers event, part of the Mahasangha Gathering that took place at Garrison Institute in July of 2011.

Josh graduated from Vassar College in 1993 with a degree in cognitive science. Recreationally, Josh is an amateur photographer who shows locally and regionally. I love this daily wisdom book. I also purchased one for a dear friend, who also loves it. It is packed with great quotes to help you reflect on life. I read each morning, and it starts my day in a positive, contemplative way. I would highly recommend this book.

Fatally Flawed

This book was first published in 1906 and has an amazing number of phrases (and terms). Hundreds and hundreds of phrases with their English translations, but this book has a fatal flaw that is common to early Hawaiian language publications. This book neglects two essential elements of the Hawaiian language, the 'okina and kahako.

The 'okina is a consonant in the Hawaiian language. It represents what is known as a glottal stop and is correctly depicted as an upside down apostrophe. It is often stated that the Hawaiian language has 12 letters, but that is incorrect. There are 13 letters; a, e, i, o, u, h, k, l, m, n, p, w and the 'okina. The 'okina is sporadically used in this book and on the rare occasion it is shown, it is depicted as an apostrophe, not an upside down apostrophe.

The kahako goes missing altogether in this book. The kahako known in English as a macron is a diacritic mark that indicates that a vowel is a long vowel. The kahako is depicted as a straight line over a vowel.

Because the 'okina and kahako were excluded for many years or decades and even today they are often omitted; many people believe that both symbols are inauthentic and illegitimate characters, when nothing could be further from the truth. There might also be a fallacious belief that they are optional characters. The 'okina and kahako give a more accurate written representation of the spoken Hawaiian language and they should be regarded as being as essential as any other letter.

The spelling of many Hawaiian words in this book are incomplete and incorrect. This book should be revised and edited so that the 'okina and kahako are include in the spelling of the words that have them. Using this book is awfully troublesome, for one must realize what is missing and make the revision in their mind. It might be like reading a book in English where a couple letters, say the "s" the "r", are never used and maybe the letters "t" and "p" are shown only half of the time. You might be able to understand what is being written, but it sure would make for challenging reading and I don't think any English language instructor would be tolerant of such omissions. I do not recommend this book, nor should anyone even glance at this book if they do not have a vast and solid grasp of Hawaiian vocabulary and grammar.

I wish I could recommend a book that is similar, but much better than the "Hawaiian Phrase Book", but I don't know of any. If you are a beginner to the Hawaiian language, there are a few good primer-like booklets I would recommend. I list many in my review for Let's Learn a Little Hawaiian. "Let's Learn a Little Hawaiian" has the same spelling problems as the "Hawaiian Phrase Book" and it is not one of my recommendations. The booklet I recommend most as a beginning to learning Hawaiian is All About Hawaiian (Kolowalu Books). Read my review of All About Hawaiian (Kolowalu Books).

The book contains phrases that can be applied in many instances: work related (mostly rural), family related, business/negotiations (of old times), food, grocery items, covering several aspects of daily life situations, but the way it is organized it makes it hard to find a subject or a phrase to use in certain occasion/situation for instance greetings, salutations, health issues, making friends, etc....the only way to learn some hawaiian is reading the book from beggining to end (not very practical to use as a glossary of terms)

Very unique and full of useful phrases.

Thought I agree with one of the reviewers regarding the absence of the ʻokina and kahakō, I find this to ne quite a unique book with tons of useful phrases. I'm new to learning Hawaiian and really find this book very useful. As part of my learning, I plan to mark up the book with the necessary diacritical marks with the aid of a dictionary. What better way to learn.
So for the vast amount of phrases this book provides, substantially more than I've been able to find un any of the other books on Hawaiian language I've purchased, I give it four stars. It is quite a unique book and gives helpful insight to the times in which it was written.

I expected too much from the book, and I was not fully satisfied.

I was attracted by the title and the introduction, and then I bought the book. Since I am interested the business issues, I thought the book would provide a different view point, and well, it did, but not quite as much as I expected. Also, the opinions are not strongly supported by real life examples, so they are so not very convincing. From a cultural perspective, I assume the author is not very familiar with Chinese, and the explanation of some Chinese phrases is somehow misleading. For example, the Budan XIn, which the author regards it as an expression of sincerity, is not well understood, at least to me as a native Chinese speaker.

Thus, I may recommend this book to the non-Chinese, who show interest in Chinese business way and its culture. Not a recommended book for native Chinese.

About the Author
Marty Gervais is an award-winning journalist, photographer, poet, playwright, historian, editor and teacher. In 1998, he won the prestigious Toronto's Harbourfront Festival Prize for his contributions to Canadian letters and to emerging writers. In 1996, he was awarded the Milton Acorn People's Poetry Award for his book, Tearing Into A Summer Day. He has twice won the City of Windsor Mayor's Award for literature, and has been the recipient of nearly two dozen Ontario Newspaper Awards for journalism.
