About the Author
Frank Smith was born in Canada and went to England at the age of six. At the age of 16 he went to work in Bletchley Park, the wartime station where enemy communications were being decoded with the aid of the famous Enigma machine. He began writing in the 1960s. The theme of the first five books, beginning with CORPSE IN HANDCUFFS, was espionage in the Cold War years, but when that came to an end he moved on to police procedurals featuring DCI Neil Paget and DS John Tregalles.

I used the Cantonese one when I lived in Hong Kong, and it was my favorite dictionary by far. So much so that I also bought this Japanese one and Latin American Phrasebook.

I lived in Japan before moving to Hong Kong, and was always aggravated when I would look up a word and my dictionary (ies) would give me 5, 10, 20 results. The worst part is, with my android and iphone dictionaries (such as imi wa), the results will also list many possible meanings for that word itself.

Now, this is a much better dictionary than most, however; after only just skimming through it for a few minutes I have already noticed some issues:

1. I looked up 'Nightmare' and there were no results. Now, the reason for this is that Japanese simply say "Warui Yumei" aka bad dream. Unfortunately, the book did not include the word 'Nightmare'. For a Native English speaker, it would have been nice for them to have at least included an entry for this word such that it would read: Nightmare Warui Yumei 悪い夢 and vice-versa.

2. I looked up 'Otosu' to test out the dictionary, and the word wasn't even listed! Of course, when I looked up 'To drop' in Japanese, guess what the first word that showed up was...Yep, 'Otosu'.

3. Lack of Hiragana. I understand that this book is made especially for beginners, and I appreciate the Kanji, however, it is a bit difficult to get used to the English phonetics.

Anyway, I would still say that this is a high-quality book and that it is much better than most dictionaries out there. If Periplus would revise it, it would be even better. Thanks!

I read the first edition and I have had the priviledge of looking over the newest edition that is owned by a collegue of mine. This book is current and relevant to the field of child care. Bravo to the author for compiling such an important and informative reference!!!

Excellent book!

This book provides many great strategies for directors to use when it comes to mentoring and how to become a more effective leader. The importance of staff development is also discussed, which I believe is an extremely important element to include in all childcare programs. Training and Curriculum Productions is an excellent resource for staff training ideas. They have PowerPoint presentations, small group activities, and other resources to help save tons of time for those of us who teach these kinds of classes. I hope this helps somebody in planning for their next class. It definitely has helped me!

ABOUT THE PHYSICAL BOOK NOT THE KINDLE VERSION: This book is great for classical book collectors and is affordable for those with little money. The cover is soft leather with the quotes and main characters stamped INTO the leather. the back is a large quote from the book. The book is very well putt together and is just all around beautiful. I recommend and get compliments on these books all the time. I dont know about the kindle versios that people seem to complain about alot, but the physical book is AMAZING and i highly recommend you buy this, and any others. Plus I have amazon prime, so i got free 2 day shipping on all of the ones i ordered. who can beat that??

Classy, minimalist, modern edition

I loved the feel of this book, from the thin leathery binding to the smooth yet substantial pages--it made reading the novel & carrying it various places all the more pleasurable. I also had fun looking at the quotes on the cover & thinking about which part of the story they were from. Excellent--Dickens' work, of course, speaks for itself!

About the Author
Jane Dobisz (Zen Master Bon Yeon) is a Guiding Teacher of the Cambridge Zen Center, where she was Abbot for four years and where she lived for ten years. A student of Zen Master Seung Sahn since 1982, she has practiced extensively in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. An advisor in the financial services industry, she lives in the Boston area with her husband and daughter.

Zen student, Jane Dobisz decides to deepen her practice by spending one hundred days in solitude in a tiny 150 square foot cabin in the deep woods during a New England winter. She takes along the most basic of items -an ax, barley tea, rice, miso, beans, and one hundred pieces of dried fruit, one piece for each day of her retreat. The cabin is heated with a wood stove and has no plumbing or electricity. She must chop wood for heat each day, as well as drag water from a well a half mile away. She sets before herself a stringent Zen regimen. Up at 3:15 am every morning to spend the rest of the day at meditative practices - bowing, sitting, walking, chanting, work period, on and on until sleep at 9:3opm.

Through her days alone she experiences despair, desire, day dreaming, exhiliration,loneliness and hunger. She experiences the joy of feeding a chickadee from her fingers and experiences wisdom from a tiny mouse who decides to camp out in the excrement in her chamber pot. Practicing mindfulness - fully focused moment by moment awareness brings an aliveness to every moment of life.

Dobisz' book is wise, refreshing and most of all inspiring.

Inspiring, humorous, uplifiting

If you have ever imagined taking a solitary retreat, this book is an opportunity to live it vicariously. The author is engaging, honest, and inspiring -- she makes you feel as though you are experiencing the retreat directly rather than just reading about it. Be forewarned, however, that this is a reissue of her prior book published under the title "The Wisdom of Solitude." So, if you already own that one, there is no need to purchase this one.

Understanding the inside of a zen retreat

Why would you wantto spend 100 days by yourself in the woods? I couldn't imagine doing such a thing, but as a spiritual seeker I was curious what someone would get out of it. Jane Dobisz has written a book with such clarity, honesty, humility and humor that I understood not only the challenges of making a retreat but also the benefits. I was (almost) convinced to try it myself. I particularly appreciate the metaphors she uses to explain zen principles. For example, when she compares being on a zen retreat to boiling a pot of water it becomes clear why she is there.

If you want to read a great book that helps you understand what a real 100 day zen retreat would be like to the body, mind and soul of an American - read Jane Dobisz's book.

This book is one of those "useless facts" books, but the useless things are so interesting and unlike other "useless facts" books, it actually held my attention because the things they talk about are interesting and relevant.

I have been reading Uncle John's Bathroom Readers for 25 years and never get tired of them. I'd already read Plunges into New York but didn't expect to read about Texas. Then, a very good friend moved there so I bought one for him and, of course, had to buy one for me as well. He loved it and I did too. But that's no surprise since I've enjoyed so many Bathroom Readers. And I expect to continue reading them for many years.

Although Morris Childs (1902-1991) was treated as a friend by Soviet rulers Khrushchev, Brezhnev and Andropov, this Chicago communist and onetime editor of the Daily Worker, the U.S. Communist Party newspaper, was an American spy working for the FBI. Barron (FBI Today) interviewed his wife, Eva Lieb Childs, and numerous FBI operatives to produce this remarkable true-life espionage story, which often reads like a spy thriller. According to Barron, Operation Solo (as the Childses' group was called) yielded intelligence that enabled Washington to exploit the Soviet Union's widening rift with China in the 1960s; their spying also helped Nixon and Kissinger forge ahead with diplomatic ties to Beijing. Born Moishe Chilovsky, near Kiev (he emigrated to America when he was nine), Childs also befriended Castro, Mao Tse-tung, East Germany's Walter Ulbricht and other Communist leaders. Traditionally, it is the Central Intelligence Agency that carries out foreign espionage for the United States, but attention to the American Communist Party gave the FBI an opportunity to infiltrate communism's highest international levels. It is amazing that the FBI apparently managed to keep it a secret all these years. Morris Childs (1902-91) trained in Moscow as a Comintern agent and became a labor agitator in the Midwest during the Depression. He became the editor of the Communist Daily Worker in 1946 but fell out of favor with the American party next year. Suffering a heart attack, he became disillusioned at what communism had become and thus was willling, along with his brother, to cooperate with the FBI when approached in the mid-1950s. Childs was rehabilitated to become the American party's foreign minister and the main funnel for funds from abroad. He advised the Soviets on America and reported to Washington what the Communists were thinking. Childs received the Order of Lenin from the grateful Russians, and Leonid Brezhnev even hosted a banquet for his 75th birthday. It is interesting to read about the role of Childs in some of the great international events of the time. Perhaps most disturbing is the account of the aged and isolated Soviet leadership hysterically seeking signs that the entire world was going to attack in the mid-1980s. Barron (The KGB Today, Reader's Digest, 1983) was able to interview Childs and other principals in the case. Suitable for public and academic libraries.

A story of Courage and Devotion

Operation Solo tells the story of Morris Childs, a spy for the American government for almost thirty years. He was a dedicated communist in the 1930's. He even visited to the Soviet Union and was taught revolutionary tactics to be used in the violent overthrow of the United States government. By the late 1940's he began to understand the monster he was serving in Stalin and feeling extremely guilty about his activities. While still in the hospital recovering from heart problems, he was visited by two FBI agents who asked straight out if would like to be a spy. He agreed. As luck was have it, he was still a member in good standing with the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) so he was able to resume his activities in the Party with no problems. He eventually rose to second in command of the CPUSA.
Mr. Childs knew and was completely trusted by all the Post-Stalin leadership. One story shows how much he was trusted. On one trip to the Soviet Union, he was injured and had to have a finger amputated. He refused anesthetics because he was afraid he would blurt out he was a spy while under. Khrushchev thought he did this so he would not tell Soviet states secrets while under. Khrushchev made a speech in the Politburo congratulating Childs for his courage and had his finger buried Kremlin wall. From this position of trust, he was able Childs was able to obtain top-secret information for almost 30 years. This is only one of numerous improbable but true stories from the book, many of them life-threatening. An unparalleled story of courage and devotion.

A story of ordinary people performing incredible feats.

As one who knew both Eva and Morris Childs prior to their deaths, I was pleased to see John Barron's published, for it finally provided exposure to one of the great spy stories of all times. I was the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Miami FBI office when I met the Childs in 1986, and maintained contact with them for the remainder of their lives. In particular, after the death of Morris, the FBI became the defacto family of Eva, and even, was at her bedside at the time of her death. The interesting thing about the Childs was they did not cooperate with the FBI for money, but due to a sense of betrayal by the Communists after they had devoted considerable time and energy to the utopian idea of the perfect Soviet society. But Morris went to great lengths one day to explain how his early conversion to communism did not mean he was anti USA. But after he saw the hypocrisy of world communism from an intimate insiders view, he then showed the same zeal in working for the FBI as he did for the early communists. I can attest to the fact Barron is accurate with his account, and even, has shown restraint at times. Operation Solo was the single greatest source of human source reporting available to the US during the time of the Cold War, and Barron's account of this incredible story is not only worthy reading for those with an interest in espionage, etc, but is a great reference source for historians with an interest in the Cole War.

This book details the history of a little known FBI espionage operation that may have changed world history. It tells the story of Morris Childs, his wife Eva, and brother Jack and how they came to be secret agents working for the FBI while aiding the highest echelons of the US Communist Party and serving as advisors to the Kremlin throughout the Cold War. Barron begins with a description of Morris Childs' early life, how he immigrated with his family to the US from Russia at the age of 5, how he became a Communist Party activist in the early part of the 20th century, attended training school in the Soviet Union, and was eventually abandoned by the party when stricken by heart disease in his 40s. During the McCarthy era, the FBI approached his brother Jack to see if he might be interested in providing information about US Communist Party operations, and Jack got them in touch with Morris. Subsequently, Morris rose to become the number 2 man in the US Communist Party while Jack served the role of supplying cash from the KGB to the US Communist Party leaders, all under the auspices of the FBI. According to Barron's account, Morris was so trusted by Kremlin leaders, that they hardly dared make a foreign policy decision without consulting him. Brezhnev even sought his advice on what clothes to wear while meeting with Nixon. As a result of Morris' consultations with the Kremlin and his later debriefings with the FBI, US leaders were aware of what the Soviets were thinking as they entered into negotiations with them and with Chinese leaders. Barron suggests that world history during the Cold War would have been much different if it hadn't been for Morris Childs helping to calm Soviet fears and letting US presidents know how far the Soviets were willing to go.
Throughout the book, Barron stresses that Operation SOLO had been a very secret FBI operation, and very few people in the FBI, let alone others outside the FBI, such as CIA operatives knew about the project. This secrecy was what enabled Operation SOLO to continue for decades undiscovered. But with so few people aware of its existence, it's hard now to develop an objective measure of how important Childs' information really was. A few weeks ago, I asked a former CIA operative, who had been a Soviet specialist very high up in the Agency during the Cold War, about Operation SOLO- -was he aware of it? How significant was it? The CIA operative told me that he had never heard of Operation SOLO, and doubted that it amounted to much at all since it was connected with FBI. Such a reaction is just what one would expect, given Barron's description of the secrecy of the project. But it still leaves me with the nagging question, just how significant were Childs' efforts after all? Is there any way to get an answer to this beyond taking Barron's word?

As real as the Cretaceous gets

An irritating flaw of much science fiction and even historical fiction is that authors assume that if the reader is willing to suspend disbelief about one thing (say, time travel), then the author has unlimited license to change what is known about the setting of the narrative and even human nature itself. The result is too often a silly fairy tale of distorted human actions and emotions that misses the chance to explore the time and place in which the story ostensibly takes place. Not so with this well written and fast-paced book.
I enjoyed Cretaceous Dawn so much, I think, because it does not twist its subject matter to fit the mold of a Hollywood dinosaur movie. Just because we live in the age of mammals today does not mean that tigers and bears crouch behind every tree. So it was also in the age of dinosaurs; then, as now, it was more truly the age of plants and insects, so it makes sense that the main characters, transported back in time, take quite a while to understand fully where and when they have arrived. This adventure tale is therefore also, in several ways, a mystery, but it is scientists who do most of the 'detective' work. Small, bright moments of discovery illuminate the larger quest just to stay alive. The authors, both scientists themselves, cleverly but delicately use this device to make sense for us of a world that is in many ways similar to our own, but differs in important aspects. One is exemplified by the acute loneliness - felt by the transplanted protagonists - of 65 million years of separation from the rest of the human race. Even an explorer on the far side of the moon is closer to home than this. Refreshingly and heart-rendingly, time travel here is much more than just a literary device to bring humans back to the cretaceous. The other distinguishing aspect of the cretaceous, of course, is dinosaurs. Oh yes, there are dinosaurs: lurking, heard, seen, smelled, and eaten, all, deliciously, realistically, in their natural habitat.

Clever and Enjoyable

This is a very entertaining book to read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The authors come up with some new twists in time travel, sending a group of people back to the days of Tyrannosaurus Rex. Meanwhile, back in the present, where we have different terrors, there are the missing people, as well as various bodies and body parts, that require a police investigation. And what is science fiction without a few evil geniuses creeping about, all full of hidden motives behind innocent smiles? It’s all lots of fun to read, and quite suspenseful. The main characters are intriguing and the action is exciting. It’s all clever and well written. Just a great read from first page to last.

Interesting Time Travel story

This was a fun read and a pretty good science fiction novel. The pacing was very good and many of the science in the story was technically sound & fit the narrative without being too technical. I would have liked this book a little more if the theory of the Time Travel had a few more details. Again, if I wanted to learn the theoretical Physics of time travel, I would look for a college Graduate (post - Bac.) level Advanced Physics text book. I wouldn't be reading a science fiction. All in all, I liked this story a lot.
