Franco Bifo Berardi: Franco Berardi, better-known in the United States as "Bifo," is an Italian autonomist philosopher and media activist. One of the founders of the seminal Radio Alice, a notorious pirate radio station that became the voice of the student movement in Italy throughout the 1970s, Bifo is the author of multiple works of theory including the recently-published The Soul at Work (Semiotexte 2009) and "The Post-Futurist Manifesto."

Complex but instructive

I have to confess that reading "After the Future" is not what I expected. My expectations were to find a political and social statement about our future, a good argument against growth for our future, but at the end it is a comprehensive manual that analyzes with complexity the future values in different times of the XX century and in differend fields, especially in language and arts. Although I had to make an effort to finish of this book, I believe that some of the conclusions are well appreciated, especially one that changes the concept of past as something that we can change according to our interests, and future as something impossible to change because it's at the mercy of conditions impossible to predict or control.
"After the Future" draws a pessimistic picture, that even the most powerful states (G8) can't predict, but it proposes some individual actions that can open doors: actions to recover the femininity; actions that rebel against the oppression of the routine; acctions that allow to know ourselves better and avoid competition, the market, and to be productive and absurdly entrepreneurs.

Brilliant!

This brilliant book matches his dynamic personality and passionate view. Though not a 'techie', he sees the modern problem as a technological one but supports a realist view on change. As an autonomist Marxist, his view is very 'solution' oriented in the right context. Highly recommended for anyone interested in changing modern political systems to be more representative of the people, those in futurist arguments, or those in art-philosophy programs.
