Southern California in the late 1950s has the look and feel of a midsummer morning—bright and still. For two young brothers, the wide world is full of promise. Together they set out to explore it as one, ever alert to the sound of their mother’s whistle calling them home. But by late afternoon, dark clouds gather on the horizon and the storm soon breaks.

Then, in a bookstore on Hollywood Boulevard, the eldest son happens upon a novel by Kazantzakis that entices him to Greece. There, he learns the language, and in that ancient land that has seen it all, heard it all, and done it all, he encounters militant Cretan students and the woman who will become his life partner in exile.
But for the younger brother there will be no escape. Trapped by failed marriages, smothered by parental guidance and an education system exposed as the state’s recruiting agent, he is dispatched to Vietnam. Fifteen years later he lies buried on a lonely hillside in New Zealand, dead of the wounds he sustained in that war.
Shocked by the death of his younger brother, Fred Reed sets out on a series of journeys of discovery and understanding. By way of Iran in the aftermath of the Islamic Revolution; the Anatolian highlands of the mystic Bediuzzaman Said Nursi; in pursuit of ancient and modern iconoclasts in Syria and Lebanon; he comes under the spell of Islam. In its embrace he finds a renewed brotherhood; in its discipline, liberation.

About the Author
International journalist and award-winning literary translator Fred A. Reed is also a respected specialist on politics and religion in the Middle East. Anatolia Junction, his acclaimed work on the unacknowledged wars of the Ottoman succession, has been translated in Turkey, where it enjoys a wide following. Shattered Images, which explores the origins of contemporary fundamentalist movements in Islam, has also been translated into Turkish, and into French as Images brisées (VLB éditeur, Montréal).
After several years as a librarian and trade union activist at the Montreal Gazette, Reed began reporting from Islamic Iran in 1984, visiting the Islamic Republic thirty times since then. He has also reported extensively on Middle Eastern affairs for La Presse, CBC Radio-Canada and Le Devoir.
A three-time winner of the Governor General’s Award for translation, plus a nomination in 2009 for his translation of Thierry Hentsch’s Le temps aboli, Empire of Desire. Reed has translated works by many of Québec’s leading authors, several in collaboration with novelist David Homel, as well as by Nikos Kazantzakis and other modern Greek writers.
Reed worked with documentarist Jean-Daniel Lafond on two documentary films: Salam Iran, a Persian Letter and American Fugitive. The two later collaborated on Conversations in Tehran (Talonbooks, 2006). He is currently working on a memoir. Fred A. Reed resides in Montréal.

The book recounts the journey of two brothers, Fred and Jim, born in conservative Southern California in the early 40s, in Pasadena, "city of orange groves, mountain vistas, high concentrations of wealthy widows and eccentrics and a climate of semi-perpetual spring." The author takes us back and forth between the past and the present. But what is really the past? Isn't it a recollection of some special moments that happened in our lives? Reed revisits these childhood and adulthood moments, as well as his present life. He does this with a very deep and elliptical style. He shares with us these moments with intense words and high emotions.
Raised in a traditional and conservative Catholic family, Reed describes to us his fading childhood along with his little brother, Jim, under California's burning sun. As two little brothers they were discovering the world, growing up as close brothers, almost inseparable, until the day they would be pulled apart by the things adults do: love and war. The fate of Jim is tragic. He enters the whirlwind of marriage and fatherhood early on in his life but he feels the bitterness of separation as quickly as he enters it. This episode will haunt him forever. His life seems to be a succession of disappointment and separation. Separation from loved ones, from the quiet and deep America of his childhood to the violence of the Vietnam War and perpetual loneliness until his death.
Reed attempts to understand what really happened to his brother Jim and to his own family. But this family is no more than a microcosm that replicates what happened to our world. Reed challenged the conformist vision of his parents and their bourgeois expectations. He didn't fall into the dangerous mirage of the American Dream. Instead, he chose to read and to travel.
Nikos Kazantzakis is one of the Greek authors that would "enchant" Reed and plays a key role in his decision to live in Greece for few years. But Reed's long voyage does not end with Greek culture or at the gates of the island of Crete, but goes far beyond--in search of new horizons. Reed later decides to live in Quebec with his wife where he would eventually raise his family. There, a new culture, a Quiet Revolution and boiling political ideas are waiting him.
Wherever he goes, Reed sympathizes with the cause of the vulnerable and the "oppressed." He goes to them and learns from them. He transports us to exotic places but digs deeper down and is never content in presenting a simple postcard or a pleasant souvenir. He discovers through several encounters ancient civilizations, and more stimulus in his quest for the Truth.
Reed alternates between hope and despair, between life and death, and between light and darkness. His writing can be joyful and humorous at moments but very serious and depressing at others. After all, isn't that a common feature of our lives?
Reed's memoir is an excellent witness-bearing about the chaotic world we live in. In these terrible times, Reed finds some pockets of relief to learn, to understand, to love, to appreciate, and ... to begin anew.
