Includes recipes from Chef Del Sroufe, author of the bestselling Forks Over Knives—The Cookbook and Better Than Vegan

Nearly half of Americans take at least one prescription medicine, with almost a quarter taking three or more, as diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and dementia grow more prevalent than ever. The problem with medicating common ailments, such as high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol, is that drugs treat symptoms—and may even improve test results—without addressing the cause: diet.

Overmedicated, overfed, and malnourished, most Americans fail to realize the answer to lower disease rates doesn’t lie in more pills but in the foods we eat. With so much misleading nutritional information regarded as common knowledge, from “everything in moderation” to “avoid carbs,” the average American is ill-equipped to recognize the deadly force of abundant, cheap, unhealthy food options that not only offer no nutritional benefits but actually bring on disease.

In Food Over Medicine, Pamela A. Popper, PhD, ND, and Glen Merzer invite the reader into a conversation about the dire state of American health—the result of poor nutrition choices stemming from food politics and medical misinformation. But, more important, they share the key to getting and staying healthy for life.

Backed by numerous scientific studies, Food Over Medicine details how dietary choices either build health or destroy it. Food Over Medicine reveals the power and practice of optimal nutrition in an accessible way.

Family Physician's Perspective: Eye-Opening, Impactful, and Timely!
By Patty Lawenda
As a family physician caring for patients with the typical and epidemic chronic conditions that plague America (e.g. high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, obesity), and as someone who himself until one year ago ate a fairly typical American diet, I have to say that learning about a whole foods, plant-based diet has had a most profound impact on both my personal and professional life. Learning about this way of eating approximately one year ago has helped me personally lose 80 pounds, reduce my own health risks for chronic conditions, while leading me to transform the way I practice medicine. I now view many, if not most chronic conditions as preventable and reversible through this lifestyle, and I have found tremendous satisfaction in helping my patients see the light and take this journey themselves.

With this new passion, I have a new yearning to learn as much as I can about this unfortunately missing piece of my medical training. When I first came across “Food Over Medicine” by Popper and Merzer, I was intrigued by both the message of the title and by the style of the book in the form of a conversation between the two authors. From the opening paragraphs, the book captivated me; I felt as if I was sitting on a sofa with the authors, listening to a most fascinating and important conversation about the food we eat and how it affects our health. There is a degree of candidness in this conversation that is very telling of the industries and politics involved. I found myself often wondering, “Why haven’t we been told all of this before?”

In addition to the conversation style of the book, which makes it quite enjoyable to read, there is a very logical flow and progression to the topics. Add to that the light humor of the talented interviewer, Merzer, along with the honest and often hard-hitting, eye-opening truth telling of Popper, and you have a book that is very difficult to put down. There is also a depth to the conversation that leaves the reader with a very profound, thought provoking understanding of this most important and timely topic which ultimately affects us all in so many ways. Why is it that we spend the most money on health care in the world yet our people are amongst the unhealthiest?

Excellent job, Merzer and Popper! Thanks for writing this – you have done a great deed for the health of our society at a time when this book is needed most!

Simple, detailed and complete
By David
Pam Popper, can we clone you and have you open up a bunch of Wellness Forum Centers throughout the country? It was my first thought after reading this book. The format of the book is a casual conversation between Pam and Glen from beginning to end. The conversational structure of the book makes it very easy to follow as the flow is natural and not too technical. I read the book in about three evenings which is fast for me. It's a great read and I recommend it to everyone. Several areas are covered: chronic disease prevention and reversal, success stories from the Wellness Institute, food politics, working with your doctor, etc.

I have read the vast majority of the health books on plant-based nutrition that have been written over the last 20 years (T Colin Campbell, John McDougall, Neal Barnard, Brenda Davis, Caldwell and Rip Esselstyn, Joel Fuhrman, Doug Lisle, Terry Shintani, John Robbins, etc.). This book belongs on the top 10 list because it really summarizes the most important things you need to know about nutrition and it's very easy to follow.

For those who don't know Pam Popper, she runs the Wellness Forum in Columbus, OH. I think this puts Pam in a totally different category vs. all the other plant-based experts listed above. Why? Because people can easily interact live with Pam and her team to learn what to eat, how to prepare the food, understand the science, and reverse their chronic conditions. The level of support provided at the Wellness Forum is much more hands-on, deeper and broader than what is typically offered by other experts. If you suffer from a chronic condition, you should not only read this book, you should also contact Pam Popper at the Wellness Forum.

CRUCIAL TO READ!
By Tina
This is the one book to read if you want to live a long and happy life! It was easy to understand and adapt to my own food sensibilities. We all wonder why we don't feel well or are packing on those extra pounds that mysteriously glued themselves to our bodies overnight. Was it Gremlins who were responsible for our weight gain or was it the consumption of too many candy bars and blobs of butter? Popper and Merzer explain everything you need to do to change your day-to-day lifestyle to ensure a higher quality existence on this planet. Merzer really makes the reading experience enjoyable with his fabulous sense of humor that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Popper is serious about her philosophy so the humor bits work well to make the dishing out of somewhat bland info were palatable. I shouldn't say bland - it's more the stuff we don't want to hear - you know, like the fact that we are needlessly killing ourselves by overeating fried foods and sugar and not paying attention to our bodies and basically poisoning ourselves because of bad habits and downright ignorance. I know this book has helped kicked me in my paunchy gut and is inspiring me to change my eating habits. We all deserve to live a healthy and fulfilling life and FOOD OVER MEDICINE gives you a strong foundation to do just that. The recipes are easy to prepare and are very tasty - and if I for one stick with this new way of looking at food I'm sure there will be far less trips to the doctor and my jeans will fit better. I highly recommend buying this book to anyone who values their life and values the lives of others they love. Buy many copies and pass them around. Your family and friends will thank you for it.
