Quinn Andrews-Lee feels anything but mighty, and faces a dismal school year. Set in the author’s hometown of Hillsboro, Oregon, this first novel could have benefited from a bit of streamlining. The main characters—fifth-grader Quinn and new girl Neally—are generally thoughtful and appealing, but the story is made cumbersome by drab dialogue and action. The central conflict has dramatic potential: Quinn and Neally try to figure out how to deal with Matt, a bully who may be his father’s victim. Parnell also raises provocative questions about religion and judgment (the apparently abusive father is the head of a local church). But instead of focusing on Quinn, Neally, and Matt, Parnell also devotes attention to characters like Mickey, Quinn’s second-grade sister, and Mr. Standers, Neally’s father. Just as the second-grader often comes up with too-cute phrases like “Look on the brighted side,” Mr. Standers seems unnecessarily highlighted with his do-good projects and quirky remarks. About the Author
Robyn Parnell's country/western-flavored song, "If You Can't Live Without Me Then Why Aren't You Dead?" mercifully remains unpublished and unrecorded; nevertheless, her fiction, essays and poems have appeared in ninety books, magazines, anthologies and journals. Publishing credits include her book of short fiction, This Here and Now, a children's picture book, My Closet Threw a Party, and now the middle-grade novel, The Mighty Quinn.
Parnell is the second of four children and the middle daughter, which means she is destined for either ground-breaking gender role usurpations or middle management in Tupperware® sales. She lives and writes in Hillsboro, Oregon, (city motto: "Yeah, we're not Portland, but at least we're not Oxnard."), sharing her life with one husband, two children, four cats, one bearded dragon, one corn snake, one ball python, one goldfish and innumerable dust bunnies.
Katie and Aaron DeYoe met while studying graphic design at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Though they are both full-time graphic designers, they spend most of their free time drawing, doodling, painting and printing. They also enjoy riding their serendipitously matching red Schwinns around Minneapolis.

A good resource for children related to recognizing child abuse

These days, it’s difficult to find good young adult fiction with happy, intact families. Fortunately for Quinn Andrews-Lee, his family is exactly that. In fact, writer Robyn Parnell creates two happy families in The Mighty Quinn. Not only is 5th grader Quinn from a loving two-parent household, but so is new girl Neally Ray Standwell. What really makes Neally special, though, is that she exudes power and calm. Her confidence and cool are so rooted that she’ll even play foursquare with second graders like Quinn’s little sister, Mickey. It’s not surprising, then, that Quinn is drawn to Neally, and the two become fast friends. However, all is not perfect at Turner Creek Elementary School. Matt Barker is the obligatory school bully, and he also happens to be the son of the very conservative local minister. Though Matt is a predictable villain, Matt’s taunts are often centered on his father’s conservative teachings, making Quinn and Neally think about what it means to spiritual, which is certainly unusual for a book directed at this age group.
Parnell intersperses the book’s more serious moments with plenty of classroom and playground shenanigans that will ring true to tween readers. The ever-vigilant playground supervisor Ms. Barnes and her trusty playground whistle will strike fear and annoyance in the hearts of young readers. Quinn’s little sister, Mickey, is also very realistically written. She parrots her older brother’s words, always seems to show up at the wrong time, and yet she is likeable because of her earnest positivity. Parnell also adds little quirks that will interest readers living in different locales. As the book is set in a particularly rainy part of Oregon, students always eat lunch in their classrooms, providing readers with a sense of cabin fever during some of the danker days at school. Throughout, Parnell writes in a voice truly appealing to young readers. She captures the essence of being very young with phrases like, “It had been the longest day of infinity,” and “Yummers!”
What really elevates the book to the tween must-read list, however, is the books treatment of bullying and child abuse. Though Quinn and Neally are frequent targets of Matt’s bullying, they are sensible and measured in their reactions. They talk relatively openly with their parents about what is going on at school, and Neally’s father in particular gives them wise counsel. Everything goes along as smoothly as it can until Quinn and Neally get caught up in Matt’s plot to hide his own bruises, which unfortunately involves beating up on Quinn. While Parnell doesn’t stray far from the after-school-special patter that so many of us grew up with, she does deliver the message to a new generation in a way they can truly relate to. When it comes to bullying and child abuse, the message of what to do bears repeating.

Bullies Beware

Overview: Fifth graders Quinn and Neally have to find the right way to stop a bully without making themselves bullies too.
My favorite part was the style of writing because they used unusual words like infinity often.
My favorite character was Kelsey King, because of her favorite tone of voice, yelling.
This is a great book for boys and girls who are getting bullied and want a way out of it.
Can't wait for the next book in the series to come out!

Bullies are a big issue for kids, and they can use all the help they can get to deal with bullying behavior AND avoid being the bully. Positive role models for kids are always a good thing! I'm excited to see more books from this publisher!)

Clever and funny MG -- great for freethinking parents and kids

Full disclosure: I received an ARC from Scarletta Press. Moreover, I'm friends with the author and she bought me sushi yesterday. (It was really good sushi.)
I should start by saying what THE MIGHTY QUINN is not. It's not for every middle grade reader, nor is it a book for a bright younger kid whose parents read MG books out loud before bed. (I tried.)
THE MIGHTY QUINN is a smart book, and it's going to appeal to brighter MG readers. (Yeah, I went there.) It's a clever and funny book about the Borgia-like scheming simmering below the surface of elementary school social life.
It's about what it's like to be raised progressively when peers are, well, not.
It's about what it's like to be raised in a free-thinking and non-religious home, when peers are, well, not.
It's about what it's like to be a clever and funny kid when peers are, well, not.
What's more, it's the rare book for smart MG readers and their parents to read together. A smart MG reader is doing most reading without parents. This is, in some ways, a last hurrah for those bedtime reading rituals that parents miss more than kids--although it never seems to feel like that when you're reading Mike Mulligan for the hundredth time.
Bonus: there's plenty that will make parents laugh.
I got a huge kick out of all the local touches, especially Noble Woods park. Also fun was seeing bits of the author's clever and funny kids in the main characters.
My only quibble is minor: it might have been deliberate (like calling OMSI "OMSA," which made me laugh), but in Oregon it's DHS instead of CPS.
