The story of how it all began and how it leads into the future in the world of the Silo

The second book in the silo trilogy carefully weaves the mitt of the story at large. Connecting the first two books into the larger narrative of the world that Howey drew us all in. In the the second book, Howey introduces us to (spoilers ahead) the times before the "seeding" of the silo(s). He does it in a convincing way and his prose flows like a river that you know will eventually pour into the familiar waters. His character work is much better here in the second book, even though I'm setting the first two stories of "wool" aside (those two will remain as some of the best short fiction that I've ever read In the science fiction genre). But if you cared about the characters in the first book (especially Juliette and Lukas), there's an ample amount of sympathy to yearn for in each main character of each of the three chapters of the second book. As you read through the journey of each character, you also anticipate that their story ties into the characters of the first book. That's the feeling you get with the second book; in each page you know more (on top of what you knew already from the first book); and even though there are no such surprises as the first two original short stories that turned into the first novel, there is a certain satisfaction to see the narrative cumulate into the peak moment of the original novel. I'm certainty looking forward to reading the final act of the trilogy. As a matter of fact, I'm buying the kindle edition of it right now, just after finishing the second book. I can certainly recommend the second book of the trilogy to anyone who had a good time reading the first one, and curious about what happens next. Howey is a great world builder and a master of pacing, certainly among the ranks of Stephen King and Justin Cronin. The one missing star is for the fact that towards the end of the book, you know where it's heading, albeit satisfyingly so. And of course this is inevitable considering it's a back story.

A dissapointing detour in the Silo series

The fantastical post apocalyptic world that Hugh Howey paints in this edition of the Silo series seemed so far flung that I had an painfully hard time reading the book. The explanations for how the world came to its current state of destruction seemed forced and ultimately unbelievable. The characters leave little to no room for emotional connection as they are at best whiny and at worst infuriatingly one dimensional. Howey's writing style is jarring to say the least as chapters jump wildly from one character to the next over hundreds of years with seemingly minuscule connections. I was not able to finish reading this book.

Slowest book of the series but still a good read.

Of the three silo books this was my least favorite but it was still a great read. This book actually suffers because of the cliffhanger of the previous book. The first half felt like it dragged on forever because I wanted to know about the silo world. This book goes back and explains the introduction of the silos and how they were designed. It does so in somewhat excruciating detail. The whole of the first half of this book could probably have been summed up in 30 pages but despite the dragging speed it is a testiment to the writing that I was still engaged in the story.
