About the Author
The Revd Dr Paul Badham is Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Wales Lampeter, where for the past twenty-five years he has directed an MA programme in Death and Immortality. He is a Vice-President of the Modern Churchpeople's Union and a Patron of Dignity in Dying (formerly the Voluntary Euthanasia Society).

The Most Laudable and Compassionate Fruits of Christianity

Paul Badham is no stranger to death or the dying process. Having seen several members of his close family die in agony (including his grandmother, who was forcibly resuscitated against her wishes), he believes in a strong Christian case to allow people a real choice at the end of their lives.
Doctors not only arrange euthanasia between themselves and trusted physicians, but also with their close friends and relatives. It is unfair that everyday men and women are denied the ultimate act of compassion.
With well-researched and carefully documented studies and empirical evidence, Paul reveals the failings of palliative care, which, while certainly an improvement on how things were done at the bedside before the advent of modern analgesia, still falls far short of perfection. In Britain, the only "choice" available is to starve and dehydrate oneself (as in the tragic death of Tony Nicklinson) and hope that pneumonia will come along and hasten the job. Few people can see any significant difference, morally or otherwise, with being sedated into a coma for weeks before death, and receiving a single dose that helps deliver the patient to oblivion in thirty seconds.
Paul rightly and incisively points out that the Hippocratic Oath is outdated and adds little to assist humanity (especially doctors) with the myriad and complicated delineations that often attend end-of-life issues. Surely it does more harm, from the patient's perspective, to force them to die from natural causes than it would to give them the means to end their own suffering swiftly. He also does not shy away from the hypocritical and barbarically hideous exceptions to the sixth commandment in the OT (death for adultery, picking up sticks on Saturdays, disobeying one's parents etc.), which is a profoundly laudable sentiment in Christian ministers.
The penultimate chapter is undeniably the most persuasive and extensively researched. In it, Badham takes us on a tour of the Netherlands, Belgium and Oregon, three jurisdictions that have legalised end-of-life compassion. With hard data, he shows that there is a far HIGHER incidence of non-voluntary euthanasia in Australia, England and other locations without compassionate laws that allow for choice. Patients trust their doctors and nurses far more when they can discuss sensitive and personally crucial issues such as assisted suicide openly. This is hardly surprising, since Australian doctors must act cloaked in shadow and semantics, saying "I was only treating the pain. I had no idea they would die as a result of the gradual morphine escalation." It is simply too dangerous to keep voluntary euthanasia illegal and unregulated.

Paul Badham makes a reasonably persuasive case that support for assisted dying is not contrary to Christian teachings. He accepts that the Christian should avert suicide due to a depressed state of mind, but he argues that a considered decision to end life is not the same thing. He refers to Nigel Biggar who writes against assisted dying because that is against the Christian faith, but Badham points out that in Biggar's book 'Aiming to Kill', there was hardly any reference to Christian principles.
For himself, Badham relies on several Christian teachings, including the 'Golden Rule' from which he fashions out arguments that support a considered decision to terminate one's life. He quotes St Ambrose's poetry:
'Grant to life's day a calm unclouded ending,
An eve untouched by shadows of decay,
The brightness of a holy death-bed blending
With dawning glories of the eternal day.'
And he asks 'If this is the kind of death a Christian can legitimately ask for from God, should it not also be the kind of death the same person could request from his doctor as an agent of God's love in helping the realization of this prayer?'
