Mahoney’s daughter has been arrested and charged with insider trading. An engineer with a high-flying technology firm, she allegedly placed a half-million dollar bet on one of the firm’s clients. DeMarco’s job is to clear her name and keep his boss clean. But how did she get her hands on so much money to invest in the first place? From Booklist
When House Minority Leader John Patrick Mahoneys daughter, Molly, is arrested for insider trading, Joe DeMarco, Mahoney’s personal troubleshooter, is pulled from his dentist’s chair to investigate. Joe, as cynical as Mahoney is Machiavellian, knows Molly and is convinced that the quiet young engineer is an innocent victim of identity theft, but he also suspects that the real target may be Mahoney himself. In short order, DeMarco winds up in a bubbling cauldron of crime, political knavery, and ne’er-do-wells, including a Philly mobster, his Atlantic City casino manager, their thugs, a crazy Manhattan financial wheeler-dealer, and two former college football teammates. Hovering over it all is the never-ending guerrilla war that is partisan politics in a gridlocked House of Representatives, a conflict less popular with citizens than head lice. Lawson has written another fine installment in his DeMarco series, filled with vividly drawn characters, a plot with more bends than the Mississippi River, a brisk pace, and a fine sense of inside-the-Beltway verisimilitude. --Thomas Gaughan

Review
''House Odds gives you a look at the sordid underbelly of Washington politics where you will meet crooked politicians, evil gangsters, and violent fixers mixed into a clever, original, fast-moving, and unpredictable plot. Enjoy.'' --Phillip Margolin, New York Times bestselling author

''Lawson rivets in House Odds, throwing Joe DeMarco - that engaging charmer you want to have your back - right into the rear corridors of Capitol Hill, the power deals, and yes, the mob gets involved. Like Joe, we wonder, as he raises the question - who really are the bad guys?'' --Cara Black, New York Times bestselling author of Murder below Montparnasse

''House Odds held my attention from start to finish. It has all the essential elements of a crackling good thriller: a great character (political fixer Joe DeMarco), a spellbinding plot, and clean crisp prose.'' --William Bernhardt, author of Capitol Conspiracy

''Outstanding . . . As usual, the characters - notably an interesting mix of gangsters, who range from deadly to hilarious - matter more than the plot.'' --Publishers Weekly (starred review)

The eighth Joe DeMarco novel
By TChris
John Mahoney is the minority leader in the House of Representatives. His daughter Molly has been arrested for insider trading. Mahoney turns to his fixer, Joe DeMarco, to get Molly out of trouble. Is Molly guilty? Is someone trying to frame her to put the squeeze on her father? The fast-moving plot involves a lobbyist, a shady investment manager, a crooked casino manager and the mob boss who employs him, a former NFL linebacker, assorted thugs, devious politicians, a hyper-aggressive SEC lawyer, and an unsolved murder that occurred while some of the characters were still in their college years.

Politics is a dirty game and Mahoney is a dirty player, which means his go-to-guy DeMarco isn't your usual squeaky clean thriller hero. In the Washington of House Odds, bribery and blackmail are business-as-usual. Apart from the creative wrongdoing that keeps the plot moving, Mike Lawson peppers the story with the everyday shenanigans of congressional politics: the tricks pulled by the out-of-power political party to become the in-power political party; the use defense appropriations bills to fund projects that have nothing to do with defense. Lawson has fun with the nonsensical babbling that substitutes for political discourse in the House of Representatives, as well as the scuzzy nature of politically motivated federal prosecutions. If you're cynical about politicians (and who isn't?), this is the book to read.

Fortunately, Lawson writes with a light touch, avoiding the overbearing attitudes that too often mar novels set within a political milieu. Politicians of both parties are dirty in House Odds; this isn't a partisan rant. The scheme that Mahoney cooks up and that DeMarco executes to get Molly out of trouble would make Machiavelli proud. Some of the novel's events are just a little too convenient for the real world, but given the novel's tone, I was willing to accept the unlikely for the sake of amusement. House Odds is the sort of novel you can read while giving your brain a rest, the literary equivalent of junk food: not particularly nutritious, but satisfying.

My Hero
By B. Ansbro
What's not to like about Joe DeMarco and his cranky, demanding boss. Although I find his job an improbable one, it is an excellent vehicle for exposing what we all feel about Washington political functioning - make that malfunctioning.
Keep the DeMarco books coming Mr. Lawson.

Joe DeMarco Faces His Greatest Challenges in 'House Odds'
By David Kinchen
In the latest thriller by Mike Lawson featuring Washington, DC fixer Joe DeMarco, "House Odds" we learn that -- although he's employed by Massachusetts Congressman (and former Speaker of the House) John Fitzgerald Mahoney, DeMarco doesn't have an office in Mahoney's elaborate suite.

On Page 77 we learn that DeMarco's office is in the subbasement of the Capitol, adjacent to janitors rooms and the emergency Diesel generator for the building. His hideaway, really hidden, is not much bigger than a walk-in closet, but its door has a faded inscription: "Counsel Pro Tem for Liaison Affairs." And DeMarco is an attorney, although his work is closer to that of his neighbors, the janitors, in that they both take out the garbage.

This is my first Joe DeMarco thriller, but I wasn't handicapped because Lawson treats each book as a standalone, providing all the background we need to understand what's going on -- most of the time, at least!

In "House Odds," the work becomes personal, when Mahoney's daughter, Molly, is arrested and charged with insider trading by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). (This has to be a first, given that very few people have been prosecuted by the current administration in the wake of the 2008 financial meltdown). An engineer with a Reston Technologies -- part of the Military-Industrial Complex and a high-flying technology firm -- she allegedly placed a half-million dollar bet on one of the firm's clients. She's in the gunsights of SEC investigator Kay Kiser (no relation to Kay KYSER, 1905-1985, the Swing Era bandleader and Dean of Kay Kyser's Kollege of Musical Knowledge; Kay KISER is a tall, attractive black woman).

DeMarco's job -- and this is no "Mission Impossible" task where he can decline to accept the task -- is to clear Molly's name and keep his boss clean. First question: how did Molly get her hands on so much money to invest in the first place? This is the part when the parents, all too often in a state of denial or ignorance, learn what's really going on with their daughter.

And it's also where the chapters about the Atlantic Palace Casino in Atlantic City come in. These chapter alternate with the doings of DeMarco, Mahoney, Molly and Joe's friend Emma, a retired DIA spy who has invaluable connections and is an obsessive lawn care devotee. We learn a lot about casino operations and the inevitable links to the Mob, reminding me of the excellent (if shockingly brutal at times) 1995 Martin Scorsese-helmed film "Casino", starring Robert DeNiro, Sharon Stone, and Joe Pesci.

I won't continue along these lines, other than to state that Joe DeMarco soon will be involved with the world of his late, mobbed-up father. Before long, DeMarco uncovers that there's far more to Molly's case than meets the eye, and the risk to Mahoney is more than just a little political embarrassment. Featuring an extensive cast of mobsters and politicians, "House Odds" is a gripping tale of high stakes scheming from one of today's best political thriller writers.

I don't know if all members of Congress have a Joe DeMarco type on staff, but it sounds like a good idea. People who long for writing by the late great Donald E. Westlake, and Lawrence Block, Carl Hiassen and other masters of the caper novel, will enjoy Lawson's novel.
