Devouring Freedom: Can Big Government Ever Be Stopped, by W. James Antle

No matter who wins the presidential election, nor which party takes control of the House or the Senate, Americans across the country are increasingly convinced that Washington is the problem. Even when a candidate promises cost cutting, fidelity to the Constitution, fearless independence from crony capitalism, or term limits—somehow candidates always seem to turn into politicians when they get into office. And politicians can’t be trusted.

In Devouring Freedom, popular columnist Jim Antle voices the question millions of Americans have begun to ask: Can big government ever be stopped? Antle examines the addiction both parties have to bigger spending, bigger government programs, bigger intrusion in our lives and bigger dependency on the nanny state, as he exposes how an ever-expanding government inevitably leads to less prosperity, less independence, less ingenuity, less growth and far less liberty.

Pleasantly surprised by this even-handed prescription for what ails U.S.
By conservative_guy1974RR
I've read Jim Antle for a long time, ever since his early days as a columnist with Enter Stage Right. Excited as I was to read his first book, I approached it with uncharacteristic sobriety. After all, Antle is a realist, and we face very real problems. But not only does Antle do a superb job of pointing out our fiscal challenges, sparing no Republicans in his critique, he offers concrete solutions, including real world examples from recent and past history, of how we can turn our fiscal ship around. The book is an unintimidating 186 pages (not counting the notes and index), and I finished it in 3 sittings. Never have I highlighted a book so much, and I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a better understanding of where the GOP, and our nation, is headed, assuming we continue doing the same thing over and over again.

Good News and Bad News
By Mark Sutter
In James Antles’s book Devouring Freedom, I found both good news and bad news.

Here’s the good news: The author puts forth an unbiased analysis of the reasons for the tremendous growth in our government since its inception—especially since the progressive era of Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. The holier-than-thou Republicans won’t like this book because the author takes plenty of shots at Bush-43 and the Republicans in the House and Senate. Likewise, the lunatic Left will be offended when the author points out the damage (possibly fatal) to our nation as a result of FDR’s New Deal and Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. Libertarians will probably love this book.

And now for the bad news about this book: Even though the author tries to remain hopeful with a plan of attack that might allow us to reduce the size of government and save our nation, I personally don’t see any chance of that happening. The biggest drivers of our spending are Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid and I doubt that even 10 per cent of our elected officials are willing to tackle those programs.

Some points that Antle makes that are worth noting: 1) The feckless leadership of the Republican partly will never allow them to combat the power of the Democrats unless there is a wholesale change in that leadership. 2) On the issue of the power of a decidedly left-leaning media, “…media coverage does shape how millions of Americans perceive important public debates, and it does influence how political leaders actually behave.” And 3), “In standoffs between congressional Republicans and the White House, a pattern has developed. Republicans speak as if they are going to stand firm, leverage or no leverage, raising the ire of the liberals who oppose spending cuts and moderates who oppose perceived obstructionism and just want everyone to get along. Then at the last minute, the GOP caves in, angering conservatives. Everyone is upset with the Republicans and the government keeps getting bigger.”

One of the Very Best
By Seaotter
"Devouring Freedom" is a well written, thoroughly researched, informative look at our big government debt crisis. As one reviewer commented, the book is certainly well reasoned. He gives both the Republicans and Democrats their just due for their part in creating this crisis. Most interesting was the voting record of the Republican party's 2012 primary candidates, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and even VP nominee Paul Ryan. They are hardly small government spenders. Also, Romneycare was the forerunner for the president's health care plan. It has created a huge debt in the State of Massachusetts. The author, W. James Antle, not only details the problems and presents doable solutions to those problems, but also describes how to implement those solutions. In the last paragraph of his book Antle sums it all up in writing, "Big government never looked so invincible. Yet it pays to remember an old saying: the bigger they are, the harder they fall."
