Thomas Jefferson, a self-taught architect, is profiled for designing the iconic Virginia State Capitol. Taking its inspiration from ancient Rome, America's first major public building forged a philosophical link between America and the world's earliest democracies. Similarly, Henry Ford employed Albert Kahn to design a state-of-the-art, innovative factory for Ford's groundbreaking assembly line. Reinforced concrete supported massive, open rooms without any interior dividing walls, which yields the uninterrupted space that was essential for Ford's sprawling continuous production setups. What's more, Kahn considered the needs of workers by including astonishingly modern large windows and louvers for fresh air.
The design of each of these ten buildings was completely monumental and prodigious in its time because of the architect’s stylistic or functional innovations. Each was also highly influential, inspiring a generation or more of architects, who in turn made a lasting impact on the American landscape. Geoffrey Baer is the award-winning host and writer of WTTW's popular feature-length TV specials about Chicago architecture and history, as well as a regular contributor to WTTW's flagship nightly public affairs program Chicago Tonight. He has written and produced numerous documentaries and cultural and entertainment specials for local and national television. He lives in Chicago.
Dan Protess has been a critically acclaimed producer and writer for television programs at WTTW for more than a decade. He wrote and produced the Emmy-winning, James Beard-nominated The Foods of Chicago: A Delicious History. He lives in Chicago.

Fascinating take on American History

As the title of my review says, I found this book fascinating. I am not a student of architecture, but have been a life long lover of history. Yet, before reading this book, I had never thought about how the design of buildings has an influence on our life and culture.
Reading about the influences on the architects, and how those architects in turn influenced others, made for a very satisfying read. There are also intriguing tidbits about each of the buildings and their designers. Who knew that the first suburban mall was built by a socialist? Or that the architect for Henry Ford's first assembly line factory would design 1000 more factories for him, resulting in his own office adopting a sort of assembly line for architectural work? Okay, perhaps students of architecture knew that. But this book was very accessible to someone like me, who has only a slight knowledge of architecture.
The photos, of course, are beautiful. I will definitely be visiting these buildings when I get the chance.

Better than a canon

Dan Protess and Geoffrey Baer have not created a canonical list of ten, and only ten, buildings that changed America. They have accomplished something much more difficult and much more useful than that. Drawing on their own hands-on experience with architecture in their home town of Chicago, they use ten chosen buildings as springboards for understanding architectural ideas and trends. They begin with a particular building and a particular architect in a particular setting, but the commentary and the visual montage rapidly take off in many directions. Photos that appear on the screen only for brief moments nicely drive home the point that all kinds of buildings in your own home town that lack the breathtaking lines of Robie House were influenced by Wright and his ideas. Saying so much, so briefly, is the real trick, the real genius of this work. The TV special, the companion book, and the interactive website with all are valuable.

Great buildings--excellent photos

Looking forward to seeing the program this week. I just received the book and the pictures are beautiful. I was especially drawn to the photos of Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House. The details are gorgeous!
