Theologians and self-avowed music lovers Marsh and Roberts posit that popular music is “a significant frame for holding whatever people come to call religious or spiritual,” and as such should be an integral part of any relevant theological discussion. What follows is a well-reasoned examination of how music affects people and how people engage that music within a theological framework. Both authors are familiar with analyzing various aspects of pop culture from a critical theological perspective, and it shows in their sure-footed approach to subjects, like finding transcendence in popular music and the ritualization of listening to music. The authors claim to have done their best to use a multidisciplinary approach in their analysis, and for the most part they succeed, with the caveat that their first and strongest frame of reference is theology. About the Author
Clive Marsh (DPhil, University of Oxford) is senior lecturer at and director of the Institute of Lifelong Learning, University of Leicester, in Leicester, England. He is the author of many books, including Cinema and Sentiment: Film's Challenge to Theology and Theology Goes to the Movies: An Introduction to Critical Christian Thinking. Vaughan S. Roberts (PhD, University of Bath) is rector at the Collegiate Church of St. Mary in Warwick, England, and an active writer on topics of religion and contemporary culture.

Not Personal

The subject matter of "Personal Jesus: How Popular Music Shapes Our Souls" is fascinating, and the research is exhaustive. In a remarkably real sense, pop music has become the soundtrack for the lives of citizens of the west. From their families, to work, to entertainment, to sports it is shaping the environment, setting the tone, deciding the mood. Nowhere is this more so than in the area of our spiritual lives. That music has a spiritual component comes as a surprise to few; however, there has been perhaps no time in history that popular music has had as large of an impact upon our spiritual lives than it does today. "Personal Jesus" looks at that influence through the lens of Christianity.
Before you rush out to buy the book you need to know that this is an academic and theological treatment of the subject. If you are looking for an overview that is an easy read this is not it. I have dedicated all my adult life to theological study and enjoy engaging with these types of text and studies. However, "Personal Jesus" was a difficult read for even me. Unnecessarily laborious would be my best description. If you are writing for your small niche group of academics within your field, then market the book there. However, if you want to start a discussion within the culture as a whole and engage wider society then you need to write for understanding not academic grandstanding. This was particularly frustrating considering the subject matter of "Personal Jesus". The artistic and spiritual, by their precise nature, are not conducive to technical explanations. Throughout the book, the reader has the uncomfortable feeling that the authors are trying to shove the right brain into the left. It doesn't work.
"Personal Jesus" will make the perfect academic resource for the individual who decides to write the book on the intersection of pop music and Christianity that this book should have been but is not.

How Music Shapes Us, and How We Shape Music

Can music really shape our souls? This fascinating academic inquiry tries to do just that. In doing so, we encounter pages after pages of how music is able to provide a common interface where ideas, hopes, dreams, emotions, spirituality, and all manner of human expressions can interact. The authors also bring in a host of other academic disciplines like sociology, psychology, cultural studies, anthropology, media, musicology, philosophy, communications, theology, and many more. All of these show the far reaching influence of music. Music is able to help express the human being's personal, social identity, and relationship that is not mere religious or non-religious, but helps to express a deeply authentic experience. In fact, the authors claim that the place of music as a medium of human expression is becoming more and more crucial as religions and traditions take a back seat in modern Western society. Music expresses us well through "spaces of meaning." Some of the questions being asked in the book are:
- Why do people choose certain music?
- Why do they prefer certain ways to listen to them?
- What is the meaning behind the choices?
- What messages or societal themes are communicated in the music?
- How do we understand the messages in music?
- How do we think Christianly about music?
The title of the book is a fascinating inquiry into the big idea of the book. What is "Personal Jesus?" It connects human and the divine nature into one person of Christ. This is used in a way to help us appreciate that music is not only an integrated device, it integrates both matter and persons. It combines the physical with the spiritual, the emotional with the intellectual, the highs and the lows of life. With such an understanding, it is not possible to separate music into Christian or non-Christian music, secular or sacred music. Any attempt to use such division will be unhelpful. The better is to compare good music and bad music. The ones that are good are those that create not only the ecstatic or aesthetic appeal, but able to capture the essence of the human experience, hope, transcendence, and spirituality. This is truth. When the theological truth is embraced by the beauty of music, we have an impressive work of art that is insightful, meaningful, and inspiring.
One more thing. Even though religions are generally pushed to the sidelines or background in many parts of society, that does not mean people are less religious. Music making is not a matter of religiosity or not, but very much a part of being human. Overall, this is quite a comprehensive work and it requires a fair bit of patient reading in order to get a hang of it. For those of us music lovers and are keen to engage music a little more philosophically or theologically, this book is a feast.

Helpful, Scholarly, but Not Assertive Enough

Marsh and Roberts examine pop music and the modern person’s listening habits in an attempt to discover how our experience with pop music shapes us. The subject matter is fascinating, and Marsh and Roberts incorporate theology, psychology, and a wonderful knowledge of pop music into their text. I will say, however, that I found this book to be a bit disappointing, mostly because the writing style was so technical and every point so carefully nuanced that I felt an absence of firm conviction (this book is also in Baker’s Engaging Culture series). The scholarly approach gives the book lasting value, and many writers will want to build on what the authors have put together here, but when an author is working so hard to avoid making assertions beyond what their research will allow, the book often becomes tedious. For me personally, the scholarly strength of the book made it fall flat, aside from a few wonderful insights that I took away. I hope other readers will disagree.
